Slim 120mm Top Fans in the NR200: Cheap, Easy Mounting Solutions and Thermal impact

  • I'm not sure if Cooler Master knows it but they do provide slim fan mounting "hardware" right in the accessories box for the NR200. I'll show a couple ways and then do a quick discussion on the thermal impact of having that fan over the CPU cooler. SFX-L power supply users can also use this method to ensure proper circulation in the case.
    I've made a few recommendations down below- check out the idea list or individual product links:
    120mm slim fans: www.amazon.com...
    Chromax Noctua NF-A12x15mm: amzn.to/2JutR4t
    "Traditional" Noctua NF-A12x15mm: amzn.to/33G8mo2
    Scythe Kaze Flex Slim: amzn.to/2JyzwGB
    ID Cooling NO-12015 RGB: amzn.to/2IakZQY
    The Case: amzn.to/2VvGUVS
    The 120mm fans in the case: amzn.to/36yWkyT

    Bought a NR200 because of Machines & More. ALL the information you need, and then some, is right here. I was able to mount my system in a few hours despite NOT touching a PC in over a decade, never done AIO before either... Everytime I have a search, something in mind I need an answer to... lo and behold, what's the first search result with highest relevancy? Machines & More!

    I had to use the hack for my Arctic P12 Slim fans to be mounted on the bottom as when mounted via just screws, the fan was hitting the bottom of the case. I slid those rubber grommets through the bottom of the case and threaded the zip ties through that and fastened them there. It worked perfectly. Thank you for all of these informative NR200 videos.

    I had a clearance issues as well. Mugen 5 with MSI B550i gaming edge WiFi in the NR200 with 25mm Arctic P12s on top. In my case, removing the fan grills from the mounting pegs (they unscrew), and bending the catch on the Mugen fan clip so it was flush got me just enough clearance. Nevertheless, this is a great guide for someone who may not have selected their top fans yet.

    So I'm thinking I messed up. I purchased the NR200 based on your great reviews. But, I also bought a be quiet dark rock tf cooler. My plan was to have 2x120mm fans at the top and a 92mm fan on the side. It looks like that's not at all possible with my current setup. Running an asus z370i mb.

    • @MachinesMore
      @MachinesMore  3 роки тому +1

      The big top down coolers often prevent the top fan and rear exhaust 92mm from working. However the direction of airflow from top down coolers is already utilizing those two paths as exhausts, especially if you have rad panel fans and bottom intakes. So, it would be nice to have those fans but it’s not the worst setup to not have them.

      I have a friend printing me some ATX psu brackets to go in my NR200 that just arrived yesterday. Which PSU did you all choose? I went with the Seasonic PX850. I think it's the best 140mm choice. I'll be using the Noctua C14S in my build. Hoping the ATX PSU will allow me to easily do Push Pull Noctua A14s. It's a bit cramped with the SFX psu mount. I was wondering if I should go with a top fan in the CPU area. With the upper ATX bracket I'm pretty sure I won't be able to get a fan in the Top fan slot over the PSU. I guess we will find out soon.

    Get some automotive acrylic double sided tape and slap that on anywhere you want something to get mounted. It might feel like it will comes off in the beginning, but with time and some moderate heat generated by the system, pulling the fan from the tape will prove to be a challenge. And the thick double sided tape also acts as vibration dampener.

    I bought a prebuilt PC from ebay and although it was a really good deal the surprise came when I started to upgrade the prebuilt PC.First of all I never knew that I could learn to hate small cases,the case that the prebuilt PC came in is terrible in that it is very hard to get in and out of the case.Small cases have their place and purpose but for the life of me I cannot understand why anyone building a high end PC would opt to use a small PC case.Even the mid tower cases are difficult for me to navigate in because I have big thick hands and what's more small and mid tower cases have a nasty tendency to obstruct air flow on top of being very difficult to get in and out of.Even owning a blower to dust out the PC case is no guarantee of cleaning small and mid PC cases properly because sooner or later it will get to a point where it will become necessary to take the cooling fans out and clean the cooling fans and the inside of the PC case thoroughly in order to get the cooling fans and the inside of the PC case as clean as the inside of the PC case should be.Dust filters are a great help in keeping dust out of PCs but even with the dust filters it is often necessary to clean out the cooling fans and the PC case at some point in time.Call me a snob but I will not ever again bother with any small or mid size PC case.The PC case in the above video looks to me like it's being choked of the necessary air needed to keep the PC components cool,I could be wrong but I doubt it and what's more it should never be necessary to bend any part of a PC case or alter any PC component to make things fit.If you're going to spend so much money on quality PC parts it seems foolish to use a small or mid PC case where you will need to force things to fit.Thank you for the video,God bless you and your family.I'm a licensed firearms owner and I get annoyed hearing people talk about this or that part makes a firearm heavier,hell,in the middle of an emergency where a person is forced to use his/her firearm do you think it's going to make any difference if a firearm part is a bit heavier when the person's adrenaline level is so high and the person is so worked up having to face one or several home invaders?"Oh,I don't like this/I don't like that.",what in the hell have we as Americans become,a bunch of limp wrist pansies?Do you think criminals or home invaders are going to stop in their tracks and admire your firearm being lighter than their firearm?I understand about space constraints but if you can make space for your big screen TV there is no reason why you can't make space for a PC case that will properly accomodate and fit the PC components without denying the PC components adequate airflow.If spending $500.00,$600.00 or more on a graphics card just to cram the graphics card into a tiny PC case where the graphics card will be denied the airflow that the graphics card needs in order to function properly isn't the epitome of stupidity then I don't know what is.Look at how extremely cramped that graphics card and the other PC components are in that tiny ass PC case,are you kidding me?You're joking,right?"Oh,my tiny PC case looks so cool." when the reality is that your tiny ass PC case is on the verge of catching fire and burning your house down because that tiny ass PC case is forcing the PC components to run much hotter than the PC components should be running from lack of proper air ventilation.You can abuse and berate me all you want but you will never catch me spending so much money on a graphics card or on any high dollar PC component just to cram it into a tiny ass PC case like that and risk losing my money.From what I have read PC components are designed to work andinstalled a certain way.Unlike many people I do not suffer from the bad habit of not reading instructions and I have yet to read instructions where PC component manufacturers say that it's okay to cram PC components into tiny cases where the PC components will never get enough air flow.I registered my new Gigabyte aorus b550 ac wifi motherboard for the warranty and I was asked all kinds of questions including the product number of my amd ryzen 3600x cpu,which cpu cooler I am using,the brand and output wattage of my new power supply,the brand and amount of memory that I am using and yes,even the brand and model number of the PC case that I am using,coincidence?I seriously doubt it.

      @MachinesMore  3 роки тому

      Nelson, thank you for taking the time to write a very thoughtful comment. I can appreciate that argument and I don't think you should ever build in a case you don't feel comfortable with. This channel features many products that are designed around small form factor computing. I do think there is a point where things are too small for their own good, but popular small form factor cases generally don't hit that point yet. In fact because of the way the case airflow can be designed in SFF, they allow for the builder to selectively place fans to really take advance of direct airflow. The best example for this is case fans close to a graphics card. It might not seem that way- and it does take some experimentation to see what works- but SFF cases can work very very well. Just an observation- one attribute of consumer behavior, in general there are people that choose products based on the 99% of the time they use them, and some people choose based on the 1% of the time they use them. So, to use your own example, some folks buy a firearm for self-defense and never bother to train with it (not good), in that scenario they hopefully never use it. Then all the features in the world might never matter to them. Perhaps all that matters in the most critical scenario is if that first round fires when that trigger is pulled, never mind how it cycles, right? The criteria for purchasing in that scenario is very different than someone who plans to run it all the time. Some folks treat it as a hobby or recreation, for the majority of the time they are operating it out on the range they would much rather have the lighter weight and better user experience. I will also point out that generally it's not recommended to keep a modded firearm for self-defense purposes, both from a legal and reliability standpoint. Most folks that do mod do keep something else stock for that specific purpose.
      For PC components you often see the same argument. Some folks like AIOs because when they work they give really good performance, even though there is a bigger possibility or failure. Some folks like air coolers perhaps because of their simplicity and reliability. Whatever it is, everyone has their reason to make their purchasing decision and it's not necessarily wrong or right, it's just a different way to evaluate a product. If you like a large case because it satisfies your computing needs and you feel comfortable with it 100% of the time, that's great. You'll also find many folks that are extremely happy with their SFF case, and while you might hear occasional reports of components overheating in a sub-optimal case, the internet isn't exactly littered with stories of melting components either. To each their own, thanks for sharing and whatever it is that you build, happy computing.

      That is a very good idea... I'll put together a parts list for that and explore. For 1080 gaming, unless competitive titles, what you have right there will still work for a long time. Thanks a lot for all these extensive testing with the nr200, you're saving us a lot of time :)
    I would like to ask, did you (or anyone esle) tried to mount a CPU tower cooler horizontally (fans up/down instead of left/right) in order to follow the bottom to top airflow ? I'm curious about the performances but it's always annoying to remove thermal paste so if anyone already has a conclusion about it that would be awesome :)

    • @MachinesMore
      @MachinesMore  3 роки тому +1

      Fans up and down have a unique set of challenges. If air moves bottom to top, then you're bringing in GPU exhaust almost directly through the heatfins. If your air moves top to bottom, then you're placing that into the GPU's vicinity and also feeding the fans. So in a combined scenario I typically think that's a sub-optimal setup. If you only have a CPU, by all means, I think having a bottom to top airflow setup that way would be ideal.

      Definitely would be interesting to see if there actually is a big enough difference. Would also love to see the same fan setup with 4x noctua vs 4x artic fans to compare noise/temp levels. One noctua fan costs as much as a 5x pack of arctic p12 fans.

    • @MachinesMore
      @MachinesMore  3 роки тому +1

      Slim fans vs 25mm fans? The only difference would be how high you can run the slims at the same noise level, since the A12x15s move as much air as something like an NF-F12x25 at the same RPMs. The A12x25s are dead quiet at 1200 RPM while the slims are very audible. At 1000 RPM? Noise difference is marginal. Will it matter for system thermals for 1200 RPM vs 1000 RPM? To an extent but it might not be worth the cost of the additional cost of the 25mm fans. The fit with your GPU and your other components is what would really drive that decision, I think.

      @@MachinesMore When the AIO's pump is using 1 fan header, the AIO's fans (with Y splitter) are using 1 other fan header, and there is only 1 fan header left for the 4 case fans would you recommend using x4 A12x15s or x2 A12x15s + x2 A12x25s? And how would you connect them (daisy chain with 3 Y splitters, fan hub...)?

Was thinking of buying them for my GPU deshroud mod as the current fans I have is the previous iteration of ID-cooling's slim fan, but without the RGB. I'm just thinking if the new fans are worth getting as I wanted to add some flair to my system.

    Liked & Subbed - top video, brilliant mods, i bought an NR200P from the states as there were none available in the UK but it was well worth it! created my own AIO inside with a 45mm 240 Rad with 2x Rajintek Aeolus Beta's (RGB) and will add the GPU to the loop later so i can have the gpu mounted vertically with the glass panel on. I'm unavailable to do so at the moment as with an open air cooled GPU it just creates a heat trap.

      It's a really interesting tower design- I might check that one in the future but thermals with high TDP chips are my main concern due to the limited CPU cooling options. 120mm AIOs aren't exactly sufficient for some higher TDP chips and for air the best choice might be something like a Noctua L-12S or Scythe Big Shuriken 3, which would be fine for Ryzen 5 or 7, non-K intel.

    • @MachinesMore
      @MachinesMore  3 роки тому

      J C, with the vented panel you have many many choices, too many to count. The out of the box pick for best thermals would be the Liquid Freezer 240, although it is a pretty tight fit. Any Asetek based unit is generally a good bet too, Corsair H100i or NZXT Kraken X units are quite popular. Personally if I were to run an AIO, my choice would be to use my old NZXT X52 with upgraded fans to Noctua NF-A12x25 (I know, strange to pick an older model right). It's a bit of a strange pick but the X52 has a built in fan controller and since the unit monitors coolant temp... you have the unique ability to index rad fans to coolant temp, something you can usually only do with a custom loop.

    Thank you so much for all the information and scenarios when building up with this Nr200 case... However I have a doubt, since the case supports both SFX and SFX-L psu, when you use the larger one, is there enough space for a normal top fan, or with this SFX-L you have to use a slim fan??

    • @Mcfa
      @Mcfa 3 роки тому +2

      Hello Stephan. When using a SFX-L PSU the space between upper fan and PSU cable will be too small. On the Cooler Master Website there is a notification abou it. I tried a 15mm fan as shown in the video and it just fits. But I had to push the lid hard to get it closed. So I changed my SFX-L to a SFX in order to have an optimal cooling with a regular 25mm fan. But if u try the slim fan you definitely don't have the space for the fan grid.

    • @MachinesMore
      @MachinesMore  3 роки тому +1

      Correct- the red is a 4 pin which gives the readout. If you’re using the same fans on the splitter then any one will do, in general you’ll get a very close estimate for the others. If they’re dissimilar, then that’s when you have to pick and choose. If the RPM ranges of the fans are vastly different and you don’t intend on the RPM being very different then I would not recommend having them on the same header anyway. If the RPM range is close enough then I personally don’t think it matters, just pick one fan so you can get an idea of the speed.

    Do you have a review of the 4 slim fans you recommended? I couldn't find one on your channel. If you do not, which fan would you recommend in terms of noise, airflow, static pressure etc? Which fan is your favourite and how would you rank the rest? Thank you!

    • @MachinesMore
      @MachinesMore  3 роки тому +1

      Performance wise, the Noctua slim is the best, but they are also the most expensive, As a case fan though, any of these will do well, but I think the only reason to go for the ID cooling one is if you want RGB. If you can get the Kaze Flex Slims those would be the best balance of cost and performance.

    • @MachinesMore
      @MachinesMore  3 роки тому

      The hardware is too long, also it has a larger diameter in certain segments that hold a 25mm fan in place, they won’t line up for a 15mm fan. I was looking at the hardware and if you cut it down it would likely work, but you can’t go back to 25mm fans.

    hey bro, i've got 2 question. Can one of these small fan fit on the other side of your Sycthe Mugen 5 cooler? If it does, does it make the scythe mugen 5 perform better as it is now in a push pull config. Another question is, why is the scythe fan facing inwards? is it because thers no way the hot air can go away if it is set as exhaust?
