My favorite scene was him opening up to noriko about what happened on odo island. I think that’s when I started crying. I understood what he was going thru to feel that kind of shame. I’ve had anxiety about things that I failed on and I know what it’s like to feel helpless and useless. The scene really hit me hard especially when she said, “you’re alive, don’t you feel it?” And he couldn’t live with his guilt and forgive himself. I’ve had problems forgiving myself and seeing it displayed in a movie in a character that I like is such a powerful thing to see. Not a lot of movies can make good characters that are relatable.

Man, I'm crying just listening to you talk about it. I, being a Godzilla nut since childhood in the 60s, went for the time at the 1st showing on opening day and was just expecting a great word of mouth Godzilla movie, but hadnt read reviews, so I was blindsided by such a traumatic, beautiful film. My jaw was actually dropped several tmes and I was teary eyed(sobbing at the end)for much of the 2nd half. I left feeling like I did watching Parasite, just mind blown, but this was much, much deeper and emotional. I'm still in disbelief that this was real...FROM A GODZILLA MOVIE!!! I got to take my best friend yesterday for my 2nd time to the big BOEING IMAX in Seattle, and even though I'd already seen it, the emotions hit me even more as did the action scenes. It was cool to see other things I'd missed before, like subtle glances from the youngest guy on the boat crew towards our coward turned hero. He was in awe of him and eventually wanted to be him at the end. God, the whole thing was just beautiful! 😭 Thank you for doing a video on this. I cant believe it but it really should and deserves to lead the Oscar nominations! My friend said it was his favorite of all films this year too, and we see a lot(thank you AMC A-LIST)! He said don't get my hopes up with how Hollywood can be, but how cant I when talking about this film? If Yyunosuke Kamaki doesnt get nomination and win the best actor Oscar, that would be a huge tragedy of films! And Minami Hamabe deserves to at least be nominated, as do some of the supporting cast, as well as directing, screenplay, cinematography, VFX, sound, Etc. I could go on and on, but I'm too exhausted now. Lol

The redemption and forgiveness in this movie is amazing. The “Aunt” character seeing the note and giving it to him showed how much she had come to care about him and his new family. That part made me cry a bit. She had her own redemption arc really. Losing her kids but now helping take care of the little girl. (I struggle with these names so apologies lol).
This is reflected by everyone around him. When he flies into Godzilla’s mouth, everyone that knew him wanted him to live. Whereas in the beginning, everyone but his mother wanted him to die.

I love your analysis, brother. Imagine what we're going to learn years from now. Godzilla Minus One is such a finely tuned story with complex, relatable characters; I have no doubt we'll be watching this movie for many years to come and still learning something new every time. The juxtapositions between the characters and Godzilla are exceptional. According to Director Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla was depicted as the embodiment of death, which is why dead fish heralded his arrival. Godzilla being a death bringer served as a nice parallel to Koichi's motives and character arc. I can't wait to do more videos on this movie. I believe Godzilla Minus One has completely changed everything for the Godzilla franchise.

The way I see it, Godzilla is Shikishima's spirit animal -- and not the benevolent, cuddly kind that guides you along your path, but the sort of trial-by fire, demon-like ones, born of your failures and shortcomings that force you into the fight you'd rather not have, but would never engage in otherwise. In Minus One, I am reminded of the words of Nicholas Cage in Raising Arizona where he posits that he, himself, unleashed the fury that was the Lone Bike Rider of the Apocalypse by his own actions. Unsure if he's even real, HR McDunnough even asks other characters in the film if they can see him also. Here, Shikishima, after being personally attacked and tormented by his demon in Godzilla, even questions his own reality and ponders whether he may already have died. In prior incarnations, Godzilla has been described as the God-like embodiment of the ghosts of the war dead returning to Japan as its atonement. This is a spiritual quest that Shikishima cannot escape. This is why after the dangling train scene where Norieko is running from the train station, Skikishima finds her amongst a crowd of thousands. He is being targeted and tormented by his demon, in a personal way, until there is no option left but to fight. But through this fight, Shikishima discovers his true self, realizes at a profound level that his guilt was misplaced, and grows spiritually. Godzilla is demon/tormentor, but also his savior. @@tombeh

The mechanic Tachibana is so important because he is not really an independent character with a life of his own but just a projection of Koichi's soul towards the external worlds,. See how all what Tachibana does is just to exteriorize what Koichi feels, the self hatred, the sense of guilt, of humiliation, the despair then, finally, the will to fight and the recovery of his pride, resolve and self respect. That is why the best moment of the film from the POV of Koichi is when he is about to take off and Tachibana gives him full military honors, that is himself being himself again. That is why he absolutely needs Tachibana when he has finally decide to fight, he needs him because the mechanic is part of himself.

The script, the plot, the character development (as you so well point out), the set, costume, cinematography, soundtrack, acting, special effects/cgi, sound, and pure ENTERTAINMENT value alone!!!I wouldn't pull any punches -- for me, this is already in my top 20 movies ever made list. If this isn't a 10 out of 10, I'd be curious to know what is! Further, when you take into consideration that the director accomplished all of this within the giant monster movie genre, it is simply genius.

As a long time student of film production, the first thing I did when I saw this fantastic foreign movie was to go online and recommend it to my own students. I communicated that if they are serious about wanting to learn more about the power of excellent character development and visual storytelling, this is a MUST SEE movie in theaters. After the screening, I wound up speaking with a nice gentleman outside of the theater. We both loved the movie and we agreed that it is unfortunate that a movie like this will likely have little to no chance of being nominated for a prestigious award, at least here in the USA. I truly hope I am wrong about this assessment. It is a movie that deserves a lot more publicity, positive buzz, and credit for sure!

I love this discussion, but I do disagree on how "evil" Godzilla is. His attacks are framed as territorial disputes; the pre-mutation attack IS his territory (they know his name from the locals), and he logically expands after he's mutated and is himself much larger. But he is so ridiculously destructive (holy crap, that breath) that it doesn't really matter.
The most evil I have seen Godzilla is Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, where he bordered on downright demonic.
The genious of the "survivor's guilt" writing is that it's played from two different angles, which is I think what helps western audiences better identify with it. The neighbor criticizes backing out of the kamikaze attack. The mechanic actually SUPPORTS that, and instead criticizes freezing up at the pre-mutated Godzilla. The protagonist has to grapple with both.

I'm so tired of everyone focusing in on the ejection seat narrative that was factually incorrect in this movie. Ejection seats were developed in the jet age due to the higher speeds making it difficult to climb out of the cockpit of a damaged plane. NO prop-driven WWII fighters had ejection seats, though the Germans, who were the first to put jets into service late in the war, were developing the technology. AND Japan had bought some of them for use in the J7W Shinden (yes, it was a real airplane). Obviously, due to its rear engine and push prop, a pilot bailing out would likely end up hitting the propeller. So that was at least somewhat technically correct that it would have been so equipped. Other than that and a couple other technical errors, I loved this movie and everything it represented.

We gota stop giving movies with terrible characters arc but spectacle visuals a high rating. Good story telling should take 40 to 50 percent of that overall rating. I would give godzilla vs kong a deserved 6 out of 10.

This film reminds me of Train to Busan... I mean, Godzilla minus one does for Kaiju films what Train to Busan did for Zombie movies. No one expects to come out of Kaiju movie with tears on their eyes. Amazing...

I do not quite understand the overwhelming praise this film gets. Maybe the hype made me expect an amazing film by regular standards instead of an amazing film by "godzilla standards"? I thought the action was damn good (esp considering the budget of 15 million) but there are so many flaws, which I'm suprised even many film critics ignore.
For instance, the film felt quite "constructed" and made for people that haven't seen many movies or read books. I'll explain what I mean by that. E.g. plot conveniences like koichi instantly finding noriko in the city within a huge crowd, him being safe in that little alley, her surviving the blast and nobody knowing it until a letter shows up right after koichi leaves, shiro showing up just at the right moment to have the most tired trope (re-used to death in shounen manga/anime) of the side character showing up at the last minute to save the day. There are more, but these are the ones that I can think of rn. These are very basic things that can be easily fixed by better writing and it shows that yamazaki is a VFX artist and director, not a trained writer...
And speaking of tropes, the charactes felt really flat and also "constructed" at times. Noriko is basically only there to look pretty and help the main character, she didn't appear to have much of a character herself. Then you have akiko being used as easy bait for empathy and tears from the audience. I liked most of the actors/actresses but what they said, how it was said and the scenes themselves often (luckily not always) felt unnatural to me. There was a lot of telling and not much showing for the characters and the general plot as well, which certainly added to this feeling.
My biggest issue however, was the "anti-war" critique of the film. Instead of criticising the nationalistic, fascist and eugenic ideologies responsible for it, instead of condemning the atrocious war crimes, colonisation and horrendous experiments on civilians conducted by the japanese imperial army (google "Unit 731" or the "Nanking massacre") they instead complain how the government didn't provide well enough for its soldiers for the war that contained all these horrible events?!
Fair enough, the Kamikaze pilots and the bad equipment were horrible as well, but reducing the war to that felt extremely tone deaf to the harm the army caused for other people. I think it would bother me a bit less if they hadn't fetishised the prototype aircraft at the end, which basically makes me think the movie was trying to say "if the japanese government had given its soldiers safer and better weaponry the war could have been won, without so many japanese people dying". They do say "war is bad" a few times but it is always within the context of the characters/japanese themselves, sidestepping the issue of the non-japanese civilians that fell victims to the imperial army. It felt self-centered in that way. Imagine Germany making a movie like this, complaining the government hadn't provided safer equipment, stronger tanks or parachutes for the SS/Wehrmacht, haha.
Maybe I'm being a bit harsh and I likely missed some things. I'm willing to give it a rewatch at home without these high expectations but this is what I felt after the theater experience.
