I can’t agree enough. This movie left me floored. I was into the story and the characters from the jump. Driving home I said aloud to myself “that was AWESOME.” And the fact that the budget was only 15 million?! Best THEATRICAL experience in my adult life.

I didn't see as many movies in the theater as I'd have liked to this year, but I saw:
      1. Smile
      2. The Whale
      3. Past Lives
      4. 65
      5. Sound of Freedom
      6. No Hard Feelings
      7. Oppenheimer
      8. Dead Reckoning pt. I
      9. The Holdovers
      10. Killers of the Flower Moon
      11. Godzilla Minus One
and Godzilla is the best I've seen all year. Idk about my adult life, but nothing else is coming to mind.

I may or may not ride the high seas, and I didn't for this. That dun, dun of the classic soundtrack was worth a million tickets and word of mouth praise. I cried each time the little girl hit a banger delivery. "Mommy," and, "Daddy," had me tearing up.

I took my dad out to see this the other day. Usually we see a movie and after he will be like, yeah that was okay. With Godzilla Minus One he actually clapped at the end, turned to me and said, "Wow, that was awesome!" This movie resonates and hits hard.

Godzilla Minus One is a groundbreaking, emotional journey. It's not only a fantastic Godzilla movie; it's a marvelous motion picture overall. The ensemble cast is unforgettable. They're flawed, relatable, endearing, and worthy of our respect and love. Koichi and Noriko are, simply put, incredible characters. What these two achieved within a 2-hour film is inspiring. Godzilla has never been scarier. Unlike every other King of the Monster variant, -1.0 Godzilla is a ruthless killer. I'm a lifelong Godzilla fan, and I have always been fearless of the Big G until now. Director Takashi Yamazaki, Music Composer Naoki Sato, the entire cast and crew, along with so many incredibly talented VFX artists, deserve nothing but praise for delivering what might be the most excellent Godzilla film ever made. Godzilla Minus One is more than just a giant monster movie; it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience you have to see for yourself in theaters.

My thoughts exactly. A Godzilla film receiving this degree of attention and praise, especially from outside the fandom, has been a long time coming for us fans. The film and franchise as a whole were left in good hands with this film, and to receive it not only at the end of a year as chaotic as 2023, but right before the 70th anniversary of the series, is honestly cathartic.

I've had a week to digest it, and listen to everyone's opinion, and it's an amazing phenomenon that this "little Japanese movie" has resonated so far and wide with audiences. I also saw it in IMAX, and it's just an experience that can't be beat. The sound (and feeling) of his roar in surround sound is what I've wanted since I was 5 years old. The theater shook like you were standing there in front of this massive monster. I'm going to see it in 4DX this weekend, and I hope it's as good.

    • @crcurran
      @crcurran 6 місяців тому +5

I saw it in 4DX on Dec 1. If you are used to 4DX your experience might be better. For me it was my first time and most of the 4DX was distracting. There were a few scenes were it added but most was distracting. To be vague, the scene in the trailer in which she is in the train car that G-1 is chomping on that definitely felt like I was in that train car with her, airplane near the end felt more real, the boat rolling the sea. There is a button to turn off the water spray so I would turn that on only if I suspected something worthwhile was coming like the aircraft near the end.
For me, I dont think I will do 4DX again since the Director/Producers didn't program it so its only trying to add something the creators didn't intend.

I got goosebumps, the scenes with Godzilla had me astonished, especially that atomic breath scene, felt like watching an actual atom bomb going off, it was just fucking insane, never have I seen Godzilla this menacing with literal nuclear breath since GMK. Most movies are good and sometimes they are forgettable. This movie is fantastic. I’m not even a Godzilla fan and seeing this made me a Godzilla fan. For 15 million dollars for a budget, to have stellar writing and acting and special effects that hold up, it’s unheard of nowadays. Later, one of my first jobs was as a projectionist at movie theater through much of the 90's. So I've had some very satisfying theater experiences, where a movie concluded, and I just had an over-whelming feeling that imprinted that movie in my memory, to where I couldn't shake it. I can recount a list of maybe 10-15 movies that have impacted me this way.

I have seen it twice and am seeing it again. Each time I watch it I notice something else. This film has so much meaning to be examined. The more I think about it the more I find. The last time I was struck with the idea that our main guy was rewarded when he finally made the choice to live. Up until the point he ejected from the plane he was never sure if he would try to live or try and find redemption by killing himself. Once he has firmly, finally decided to live he is rewarded with the return of Noriko, who he thought was lost.
Maybe I’m adding meaning where it isn’t, but there seems to be so much more beneath the surface. When I first saw it I thought it was kind of a cop out to have her alive, but examining it from an allegorical point of view his redemption warranted a reward for deciding to live for others instead of wallowing in doubt. After 70 years I didn’t know if they would keep coming up with new ways of looking at the story but this film did it.
Side note: I cried the first time, I cried the second time, I’m pretty sure it will get me the third time too

SPOILER ALERT : you make a very good point. In the beginning people berate him & he beats himself up for not dying. And he goes on this journey to where he *willingly* goes on a kamikaze mission and is ready to die & in the end he doesn't have to. The whole community comes together + finds purpose in battling Godzilla. That's what the movie is about to some degree. Oddly placed in a Godzilla movie.

@@Rum-for-all-and-all-for-rum odd maybe for legendary Godzilla movies or the sillier films in the franchise. I think this was a natural progression from the message in the 1954 original. That one was more of a general warning to mankind, whereas Minus One was a look at the individual people that make up communities. The lesson in this film seems to be that there is nothing honorable about sending your own people to their deaths, using them as meat shields basically. During the war, death was almost seen as a reward particularly for the Japanese whose society values honor so strongly (honestly it’s a problem most countries have when it comes to war). Koichi had to learn that there is more honor in life, fighting to protect but not by valuing life so little that it is thrown away.
Man, I could talk about this film for days.

5:00 The thing about this movie is that most of the story is about REAL STUFF that ACTUALLY HAPPENED to real living people in history. No other Godzilla movie has made Godzilla's symbolism for war and human suffering such a front and center focus as Minus One. So, when we see the people in this movie we genuinely recognize them as real people. For American audiences just as much as Japanese this story is about our shared history and impacts that we had on each other. It's far more than just a monster movie because of that. It's a story about us as human beings and our shared struggles against nature and ourselves

I just got back from viewing it for the second time. Like you, I had to settle for just a 2D showing earlier last Friday. I was so compelled with it. Basically, it's a war-time drama, mixed in with a monster movie. I get chills thinking about the music played throughout it. This time I went to a much larger theater with RPX sound and with a better picture than before. It was MUCH better experience. Two moments in it still made me tear up. I like how it plays it downright serious toned, with a few instances of action. The director steers it on its own course. He does what Toho wants. Does some things Americans want. Rolls it all up and created this movie. I think this is one of the highlights of the year. Just a phenomenal film.

I think one of the biggest reasons this film was so good was the story. It was just perfectly executed. It was about shame and redemption. It was about love and regret. It was about a nation in mourning and rebuilding a better future. It was about a giant monster and little makeshift family. Everything felt epic, yet intimate. It’s crazy that we haven’t seen a movie like this from Hollywood for years and I think that’s partly why this film is getting so much attention, and deservedly so. It’s just a breath of fresh air from all the mainstream garbage we’ve just been seeing the last few years.

I’ve been a maaaaassive Godzilla fan for most of my 30 some years of life. While I have my personal favorites, there’s never been a Godzilla film that I could just show anyone and guarantee they’d like it. There’s always some weird moment or low polish VFX holding the film back. G14 and Shin are close, but they both make choices that might rub people the wrong way, and they get some mixed reviews because of it.
But not Minus One. It finally happened. They finally cracked the code and made a Godzilla film with an excellent script and acting, great VFX, and even a Godzilla who looks the way you’d imagine, with a healthy amount of screen time. It’s the highest reviewed Godzilla film ever, and one you could show to nerds, as well as your grandpa. Hell, you could even feel confident taking a date to this thing.
It’s all just so vindicating. Like finally, the masses are starting to see Godzilla the way I do and it makes me so happy. As a mega nerd I am still debating if it’s my personal favorite but it’s absolutely in the conversation.

The biggest strength of this film-in my top 3 of this year-is that it is set right after the war you see Japan and the characters trying to start their lives again after the atomic bombs. A lot of people have guilt over their actions and living when so many passed. Then, here comes this monster destroying their rebuilding, this time, the survivors or the people can get redemption
    That's what resonating

I mean it's Godzilla fer cryin out loud! But I now think it was the spirit of this movie. It is first and foremost a movie about the war, the two bombs, and the effect on Japan. I also saw scenes in it that reminded me of some of the Fukushima tsunami rampage in 2011. I also consider Japan my second home. So, understanding the historical context, the culture, the symbolism in the movie (Godzilla himself is symbolic) and then the exquisite accomplishment of the acting, direction, music and just everything came together in this masterpiece. I think it's a very important film, actually. Brilliantly done.

    • @chozochiefxiii3298
      @chozochiefxiii3298 6 місяців тому +3

@victorapolinario2766 Well it takes influences from a lot of Godzilla eras like heisei, some Mothra elements, minus one and minor influences from a jrpg I played and love. I left a synopsis on another comment on another video but I'll try my best to recap it here.
1000s of years ago there is a civilization that was superior to all others in terms of armies and science. The leader of this empire wanted to establish his dominance so they captured one of the most fearsome sea creatures (leviathan) and performed experiments on it to turn it into a tool of war and Conquest.
A young man from this civilization who was more pacifist and diplomatic thinking felt sorry for the poor tortured creature and hated his leaders for their warmongering beliefs. He let's the creature go and during its rampage it and the young man are killed by the army of this empire. Kindred spirits in both pain and hatred the young man's spirit enters the creature (similar to gmk) and the combined anger, pain and hatred revives the creature and it goes on another rampage this time laying waste to the civilization then disappearing into the sea.
1000s of years pass and the story picks up in the 1940s. Where the creature is awoken and mutated by the bikini atol nuclear test creating Godzilla. As this phenomenon happens a young woman begins having visions of a malevolent creature and of a place she has never been but seems familiar.
I wanted a few more mystical and spiritual elements like Mothra and gmk while trying something different and trying to remain true to Godzillas roots. In both periods of the story he is a hurt creature (and man) who lashes out at a world that causes nothing but suffering and destruction in the people's lust for war and Conquest.
I also want to make Godzilla truly formidable that the usual ingenuity won't be enough to stop him, other more spiritual methods may be required. The angrier he gets the stronger he gets. Where instead of more war and violence the only way to defeat Godzilla is to make peace with it. It is in part due to the people living on the planet that Godzilla is the way he is in the first place. Humanity must atone for their sins.
On paper it even sounds stupid which is why I didn't have as much confidence but I want to tell a story where Godzilla is the judge jury and executioner. Where he holds Humanity accountable for their sins both past and present. I've had some kind words said to pursue this idea but it's so daunting as I want to tell a human story like minus one but I don't think I'm up to the task.
I do have at least two endings in my head that I can choose from. One where Godzilla survives and returns to the sea. Or one where he dies and dissappears but he's at peace when he dies. It's hard for me to decide which direction to take as I love Godzilla too much to outright permanently kill him, but a different ending we usually don't see could be neat.
Dang sorry for the continued edits it's just really strange I got such positive messages. One person even said "we could be looking at the next person to direct and write a Godzilla film". As honorable and a dream come true as that would be. I'm not nearly talented enough I've never written a story in my life nor shot anything on a camera. I'm only doing this because I love Godzilla and I'm feeling somewhat bored with my other hobbies and I've wanted to try writing for some time now. Plus I'm not Japanese so no matter how much I love Godzilla, I won't be able to understand him as well as the Japanese directors who make the best Godzilla stories do. I don't have faith in my own work I want to go through with it with confidence but I'm my own worst critic, always thinking how bad it's going to be instead of constructive criticism.
