Great clip, loved hearing your honest thoughts instead of general praise.
Unfortunately after Shin Godzilla, Toho formed a Godzilla committee to establish a list of rules for future writers and directors to follow concerning the franchise - one of which is "Godzilla cannot die." So while the director of Minus One DOES have ideas for a sequel, the end was always going to feel sequel-baity no matter what just because of those rules.
Definitely watch Shin Godzilla if you're curious! Just be aware it's a critique of the Japanese government first and foremost, following their botched handling of the horrible tsunami incident a few years back.
As soon as you guys gave the spoiler warning I immediately paused the video and watched the movie. It was absolutely phenomenal and exceeded my expectations. You were right you build this connection with the characters and when they suffer you suffer etc that theme towards the end as he's approaching Godzilla was amazing too I need to find that OST
Game center CX! Seriously it's a great show!
I honestly wasn't going to watch Godzilla but you guys made a compelling argument to see it. I respect your honest takes on stuff. and always fun to see john. have a great day red cow family.
I almost cried at the ending, one of my fav movies now
1:59 Human condition trilogy. Great set of movies. Godzilla Minus one came off to me as a more optimistic and hopeful version of that. Just an overall fantastic movie.
There was a Second World War 🫢 when?
These clips featuring Junt finally pushed me to go and watch Box Mac... watched the WWF episode, great stuff.
I really enjoyed this wee film discussion. These sorta things are always some of my favourite clips from you guys, your film discussions are always really interesting.
You have to see this in black and white - it’s really next level.
Awesome Vid!
Thank You very much for Your Work! Greetings from Germany
Gunbuster shoutout! Amazing Anime Series.
Overall great movie. Felt like Jaws on that boat.
I agree, although I'm fine with a happy ending, Japan gave us Berserk. Also as cheesy as Godzilla 2000 was, as evident by your clip at the end; that movie was so refreshing after the disappointment of Godzilla 98.
Japan has not been in a happy place since the 2011 disaster. I don't think audiences want depressing stuff right now.
12:33 It feels like an older film because it’s a direct remake of the original Godzilla (1954), complete with entire scenes recreated and dialogue repeated.
I feel like this underreported-nobody’s mentioning this in their reviews.
It's not a remake though. Set in a different year, with completely different characters and scenarios, and an entirely different theme. Several scenes pay tribute to the original, but it's still a reboot like every other Godzilla reboot that came before.
Because it's not a direct remake. It's more of a reboot or soft reboot. 1. There's no love triangle. 2. There's no Emiko and Dr. Yumane. 3. There's no Dr. Serizawa or any other Oppenheimer-like character and the oxygen destroyer.
What I love is that they did give a refreshing take on the human element. Chinese and North Korean cinema has this obnoxious overly jingoistic attitude about that you should be proud that you got send to a meat grinder in order to die for nothing. This movie hit way different it's like "your life matters, life is hard, but you owe it the effort" so that background story of being gaslighted that "you should've died like a man, and now you can redeem yourself by dying fighting Godzilla" and then you see the parachute come down was my favorite part of the movie
Excellent timing. I just watched the movie on the weekend.
Unsurprisingly, your ree-view is much better than Bimmy’s
Not sure if you'd feel the same, but I loved Shin Godzilla. I found the stripped down scientific and political strategy of it thrilling, and Godzilla is frightening in a way that he hadn't been until the 1954 original in my opinion. The human drama is no-nonsense and engaging, and the visual storytelling is pretty brilliant in places. There's a shot of a pair of shoes in it that I can't get out of my head.
I liked the old school vibe with the score and design of Godzilla as well. It was very much the original 1954 look to the monster. And it was a proper "monster" and not some overgrown lizard.
Stand up in the face impossible odds for the people you love and let the people who love you help as well. I can't remember a movie that put me on the verge of tears like Godzilla Minus One did. I almost forgot that narrative entertainment could prompt such an emotional response.
For anyone unfamiliar with you guys, there would be something insufferably pretentious about EJ describing Minus One as "one of my favorite pieces of media last year."
We include television, video games, and movies in our top lists of the year. Not gonna call that “content” hahaha
I’m waiting to see it because I’m afraid I’ll be disappointed.
there's a hunger for godzilla inside each one of us
you cant be famous for not watching anime, frankie
It was ok.
Talk about Folding Idea epic James Rolfe essay soon
What is the folding idea essay?
@@kennymetz187 "I don't know James Rolfe" an analysis of James Rolfe as a failed filmmaker
It's not fair to make them sit through that bullshit for a podcast clip.
Slob news!!!
they won't
Please watch shingodzilla
While I enjoyed it ALOT. It’s not that deep movie like some people want to make it to be… well it’s a Godzilla movie so what can you expect. But all the characters act like overly childish cartoon characters from anime. Or maybe those are just super common Japanese archetypes in story telling.
Personally I had to stop the video. I thought this video was just talking about the movie in general, but found out movie spoilers would be discussed in the video. Love the channel but wish a Spoiler warning would have been in the title.
game of thrones killing off characters was done well enough cause those characters werent developed to be interesting, the son wife and mom all had a stock roll throughout the story.
I'm watching BoxMac over here bustin a gut😂😂😂😂😂😂
We love Jon! We love Jon! We love Jon! We love Jon! And Ej. And Frankie.
I love junt, but that bed groove in the background though. God i love him and his insights, would live to see him back ❤❤❤. You guest episodes are so awesome great job guys
WOW THAT BED IS DESTROYED! Did not notice until I read this comment.
LMAO so down bad 😂
There's a contract between Toho and Legendary Studios that determines when Godzilla movies can be released. I believe there was a stipulation that prioritized a north american release for Godzilla vs Kong, despite -1 releasing first in Japan. I think the world is big enough for both studios to exist and I'm grateful that we get to see Godzilla portrayed from these different angles. Godzilla fans are eating well right now, no matter what flavor you prefer.
Its because Minus 1 was never going to make as much money as a Hollywood movie. but its not favoring the hollywood movies. The deal is that no Godzilla movies can be release into theaters in the same year, which is why even though minus 1 was still in theaters making money, at the end of february, it was abruptly taken out of theaters because Godzilla x Kong was releasing the next month. Then Toho had to wait until that movie was out digitally and on physical media for them to release Minus one on digital in the rest of the world.
Only did Minus One is already did surpassed Godzilla x kong with Emotional and Traumatic
@@bradleyforney4520 what did you just say?
@@intothezombieapocalypse I just said godzilla minus one already did surpassed godzilla x kong new empire with an emotional and traumatic
at the end of the day, Legendary put a lot of money in Toho's pockets. Yeah, now that they're getting back in gear they have to play second fiddle, but it's not for nothing.
I saw it Minus Color (black and white) and that really sold the old movie style. But I saw it in 4D Max and that took me out of it in a lot of parts. I never want to watch a movie that way again. It was cool to have your seat rumble when Godzilla is stomping on the ground, or a breeze coming through when they're flying the plane. But it was a constant movement for the entire movie. Loved the movie though. Need to get it on 4k Blu ray.
It’s good. Shin is a better.
You should check out the 2000s reboot of Tetsujin 28. Also a very somber work about post-war Japan's reconstruction. Wings of Rean touches on it too, but its way more insane
Shin Godzilla is one of my favourite movies of all time! The score is just amazing and the director is same as Evangelion so the movie feels like a love letter to his fans. It’s an awesome film I would highly recommend:)
WHOOA spoiler alert much guys? Havent seen it yet but loved hearing your thoughts until I had to pause, will be back after i see the movie soon
A small reminder is a single episode of She-hulk and Star Wars Acolyte have higher budgets than all of Godzilla minus one.
Junt is so awesome
He’s the anti-slob if you will
You should watch more of the higher rated artsy Godzilla movies. Shusuke Kaneko's GMK, is an absolute must watch. Alongside the same directors Gamera films from the 90s
Godzilla? Eh
i finaly saw the engish vers of Godzilla Minus One and that movie still sucks
Personally, I STILL want to see a Godzilla movie that's JUST giant monsters beating the crap out of each other for the entire length with zero human b plot.
Oh man, these thumbnails are really embarrassing
Who’s embarrassed? Not me
@@RedCowArcade It's more like secondhand embarrassment
@@Nasser47 get over yourself
Stupid title. Lots of people saw it, big deal
Hope you grow out of your edgy teenage phase someday, champ!
@@HaloMasamune talking about Godzilla on youtube, so mature
Shin Godzilla (2016) is a clown show. It was directed by the Evangelion guy so is basically endless trolling with ridiculous easter eggs and anime tropes. It's not a serious movie. Minus One feels TV-ish in parts but what movie doesn't nowadays.
