This whole live concert album is flawless. Have to play Sultans of Swing and Tunnel of Love from Alchemy Concert to complete 3 of the greatest guitar solos, drumming performances and keyboard contributions ever produced by a band. Romeo and Juliet is beautiful but different to those 3 then there’s Two Young Lovers and Twisting by the Pool as super fun old fashioned rock.
Underrated but less energetic songs but still great musically are Private Investigations, Love over Gold, Theme from
Local Hero and Once Upon a time in the West. And that’s just this live album ( Dire Straits live is without peer musically ) without even getting into Brothers in Arms. Easily a week.

I’m a huge Dire Straits fan but I prefer their studio albums to their live performances because Mark changes up the music so much when playing live. They were never a “fashion” band. They played their music the way they (Mark) wanted it. I’m discovering that most of us didn’t realize just how great the music was that we grew up with. Dire Straits is one of the best selling SACD format bands if not the best!

You mustn't forget this was 1983, 40 years ago.
Mr Knopfler as you probably know, wrote the words, music for all instruments, and he always gave them time at the fore, especially the piano players, arranged it sang it and played his guitar as only he can, all of this masterpiece is the genius called Mark Knopfler.
I never get tired of this track. I'm 76 and can remember when they were popular many many many years ago.
I can't comprehend how he managed it, thats why he's a genius.....

Absolutely loved this song when it came out, but because of radio being the media of the day, it was rarely played - because of its length. Somehow, kind of forgot about it, didn’t hear it again for about 25 years - life happened, shit happened. Can’t remember where it popped up again, probably in a UA-cam suggestion. Put it on the home stereo one night for the kids to hear - then discovered my wife also loved it too and also hadn’t heard it for decades. Will never forget about it again!
Without a doubt, one of the greatest rock songs ever!

I would classify DS music as rock fusion. Aside from MK’s lyrics, vocals and guitar, this and many DS tracks are distinguished for composition, musicality and creativity, and while MK deserves all the credit accruing to him, you don’t pull this off without tremendous collaboration of all the performers. Consider fast forwarding 2+ decades to sample MK A Night in London, “Cannibals.” Still got it!

  • @brianshickey

This is a complete masterpiece and is quite possibly the best live performance I’ve ever seen, period. Absolutely every musician formed a cohesive unit that fed off of one another to create this flawless masterpiece. Mark is definitely a guitar god however the stars of this track are the drums and especially the keyboards. I teared up a couple of times due to how beautiful the transitions were (along with Mark’s storytelling).
It’s a shame we don’t have this caliber of music anymore and I would sell my soul to attend this concert. Truly.

The story of Detroit in a way, what more can you ask for in a song?

    Don't forget the organ.
That was the warm blanket underneath al.
So it was not only Alan Clark on the piano.
So Alan Clark is sitting on the right of the drummer. (drummers perspective) And on the left was Tommy Mandel on the Organ (not a permanent band member).
Later came Guy Fletcher for organs and synthezer in the band besides Alan Clark on the piano and keyboards.

    Massive track, isn’t it?
They were uncool from the rock crowd, unhip for the new wave fans, they just didn’t fit anywhere into the landscape and yet they still managed to become one of the biggest bands ever in spite of so much of their ‘shortcomings’.
The arc of their albums is also really interesting to analyse and see how they developed in sound and matured in the writing.

Alex asked everyone to put down their favorite tracks, here goes: "Sultans of Swing," "Lady Writer," "Once Upon a Time in the West," "Tunnel of Love," "Skateaway," "Expresso Love," "Private Investigations", (would've said "Telegraph Road"), "Twisting by the Pool," "So Far Away," "Money for Nothing" . . . ok, I'll stop there, lol!

I hope so too, MM’s a great album. There’s a lot of ground to cover from their humble beginnings to massive successes, so it’ll be tricky to find the right balance.
They could easily have two weeks devoted to them, maaaaybe even three if it got into very deep cuts.
I played their albums incessantly for a couple of decades. Got a little weary of them after a while but we got a decent record player a while back and I dug out my old vinyl. They’ve been getting healthy amounts of rotation ever since. :D

In a live performance the crowd are part of the experience. And bands feed off it. You might as well be watching a movie of the concert without the audience.

This must rank as one of the all time best live performances or concerts, or just a great show! #markknopfler is - in my opinion - one of the top 5 greatest guitarists ever. This was my 1st live album purchased and remains #1

Dire straits truly went on just before Queen, during live Aid, and was sooooo happy they stayed true to most of the movie!!! Mark was always amazing!!
Telegraph road and Lorax by Dr.suess were staple songs and books in my house to my children for the stories!!! 😊

Fabulous, always. May I suggest Sultans of Swing and Tunnel of Love, from both Alchemy Live concert and the 1985 live performance, "Wembley Does The Walk, as well as Telegraph Road. For a bit of fun, toss in "Walk of Life" from either or both, and add another live gem, the 'Walk' with Paul Franklin's fabulous pedal steel guitar outro, recorded live in Basel, Switzerland in 1992. Mark and Dire Straits made music I never get tired of, and Mark is still "masterworking" classics like, "Sailing to Philadelphia," and "Speedway At Nazareth," - two more incredible creations. Thanks, guys.

There are great song writers, guitarists, story tellers, and singers in the world. But Mark is one of the few that is all of them together in one fantastic package. Check out “Tunnel of Love” live at Wembley Arena 1985 “Private Investigations” live on Alchemy. “Speedway at Nazareth” live Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris version. “Brothers in Arms” live A Night in London, And of course “Sultans of Swing” live Alchemy.

ALCHEMY is without a doubt a Masterpiece of an album, for a Live album the quality of sound is brilliant. The entire album is back to back brilliance I have the Album still on Vinyl as well as CD but I always go for the vinyl first just something about that sound as the needle drops. Thanks guys what a great way to start off 2024 with you, the only thing that could have made it better was you showcasing an Aussie classic 😁😁😁😁😮😮🤔🤔😁😁

Easily my favourite Dire Straits track - and I love some much of their stuff.
From the album 'love over gold' this was the opening track of 2 songs on the A side (5 in total on the album) and at 14.30 mins still wasn't long enough.
    Just a masterpiece.

I saw them 2 nights in a row back in early 90's. They were great , however I could have got near the same if I put one of their CDs on my stereo system in a dark room and crank the volume up.

19:30 - yup I lived in the UK in the mid 80s, loved their music but never got stirred to go watch them live. You think life goes on forever and the bands of your youth would be around forever too - but it doesnt happen. Thank goodness for this music album video that captures arguably the greatest rock live performance of all time by any band. And this song was the encore - after 2 hours of playing!

Gents, seems to me this is the first time you heard Telegraph Road. Written by Mark during a road trip in the US. Forget the location of the Telegraph Road.
dIRE sTRAITS are on my Car Play list for 40 years now and really soothing to listen to the whole Program including Private Investigations, Tunnel of Love etc...
Thanks for the Review today, I love seeing the effortless Guitar picking style of Mark.

It was about Telegraph Road in Michigan, which runs about 70 miles North/South. It was also partly inspired by him reading Growth Of The Soil at the same time as he was going down that road in a tour bus.

This song was written about the actual Telegraph Road (US 23) that runs along the Detroit border in Michigan. While it was referencing the state of Detroit, it could be a out the rise and fall of any large city.

@sean-the-other-one, I used to have to travel Telegraph Road to and from work everyday. That commute was more stressful than my job. I am so glad I don't have to go there now. I have not been near Telegraph Road or Detroit for more than twenty years. I am less than 45 minutes away from downtown.

As good as the Love Over Gold studio version is, I will ALWAYS prefer the ALCHEMY version. They were firing that night. Check out Terry Williams! Looks so much more engaged than he did in Rockpile, and I'll put money that it is not drugs! When I was 15 I Hobbytexed (sort of pens for drawing permanently on fabric) the Brett Whitely arrows onto a white T-shirt because of this VHS. I got shitted on and had to explain it even after BITA came out. Didn't care. Wore the Tshirt to holes.
The sound quality with the overloading of the PA was apologised for on the album cover.
I have used wrist bands to protect my wrist from bits on the bass that wear holes in your arm, and even powerlifting wrist wraps to do the same and support my weakness when shredding with a pick on a bass guitar. These days I wrap a bandanna around my right wrist when slapping double bass, and it helps support on long sets too. If it's good enough for Steve Earle, it's good enough for me.

    This is peak Dire Straits…
The rhythm guitarist is a guy called Hal Lindes, who ended up playing lead for Fergal Sharkey…
He obviously had to defer to Mr Knopfler, but he got one song at every concert to show his chops…
Check out “Two Young Lovers” from the same gig…

Money for Nothing - Concert For Monserrat. Featuring Sting, Phil Collins and Eric Clapton
Also, Rockpalast LIVE 1979 it’s almost a pick-em but I prefer Wild West End.
Really enjoy watching guys, keep up the great work.

I was at this gig and sort of thought it may be a bit boring, it wasn't!
This was the encore and they played like this for over 2 hours
Sultans of Swing is also awesome!
The whole band were utterly brilliant!
We thought, at the time, that they weren't going to play Telegraph Road, its so complicated.
The star for me, was Terry Williams on the drums, superb, even better on Sultans
40 years later its still possibly the best gig, musically, and I've seen Genesis, Pink Floyd and The Stones

i played this album more than 1000 times as a teenager growing in peru later on I became a Newcastle united fan because one of my favorite peruvian players played for club and was so excited and happy to learn that Mark Knopfler was also a fan and newcastle native, the concert ends with the song going home that also became the club’s anthem .
