Australia is bloody lucky to have this bloke walking amongst us. Not only a brilliant songwriter, but also a thinking man. A man of moral integrity and good politics. He has most certainly left a mark in our hearts that will never fade.
I know it is not in our tradition, but PK has grown to become all our elder. He has lived a life and it is written all over his face and he can put into words in his simple songs how we feel.
How many cabs in New York City,
How many angels on a pin?
How many notes in a saxophone,
How many tears in a bottle of gin?
How many times did you call my name, knock at the door but you couldn't get in?
The brilliance of this writing.
I was givenas a gift, in a book the lyrics of Paul Kelly
What a phenomenal songwriter our Paul is! He’s made us laugh, cry, think, remember, dance, and above all go home happy after any of his performances. He and Don Walker (of Cold Chisel) are two of THE MOST talented and genuine songwriters of our era/lifetime in my opinion, and I’m so grateful for them both in my lifetime.
I got to see Paul and his nephew a few years ago doing an acoustic set at a small club in Atlanta. The room was full of fans who knew the words to all his songs and were not shy about joining in. Paul was clearly enjoying the intimate setting and interacted extensively with the audience. It was like a bunch of old friends getting together to celebrate his music.
Every chance I get... gotta see this man live. Thank God I live in Australia. The most amazing lyrical songwriter/storyteller/musician.. 😊
Great band on this one. A couple from the fabulous RockWizz line up.
Paul is a great story teller its a shame he is not better know around the world thank you for showcasing him this week. Peace out.
Oh today's selections are stellar. I'm so glad Chris chose these two. For me If I could Start Today Again is an absolute piece of perfection. My heart always breaks listening to it. Beautiful. Thank you
Got to love Paul. Every song he writes has a journey.
The man sure can tell a story. The man sure can make you feel the story.
Sometimes you just want to listen to words of wisdom put to great music. Paul always delivers.
Chris is a master. Dozens of songs he could have picked. These two were among the ones I’d have chosen too. Along with Little Things and Before too Long. Looking forward to the rest of the week
What a combination of songs. Both are brilliant in their own way. Interestingly enough in my own extended family, this song has become the go-to for when we remember the horrible days when we each have had some terrible trauma happen and the repercussions from the independent incidents that befell us all. Amazingly it wasn't till we had a family get-together that we all realised that we were drawn to this song independently. It's not even a well known PK song and in his mind it is about him doing wrong. The song has found us all and it has me in tears every time and I'm as wooden as a tree, normally. Thankyou.
How beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
such an honest performer.
Chris, you are doing a magnificent job! Trying to capture all that is Paul Kelly in one week, even with bonus tracks must be the most difficult job on the planet. I can't wait to see what's next. Undoubtedly, there will be some classics and personal favourites that get left out, but hey, look on the bright side... Paul Kelly week two and three and even more could very well be on the cards at this rate!
Both songs fantastic, paul is such a great lyricist, but performs so beautifully also. And ofc a mention to his nephew Dan, who's band Dan Kelly and The Alphamales is fantastic as well!
Paul Kelly is the main reason I wanted to become a musician and songwriter and he is the main reason why I became a telecommunications technician. 😂
"Everything's Turning to White" is one of his top shelf songs, great story telling.
My favourite - what a concept to even contemplate writing a song like this from the point of view of the wife - just amazing.
@@mals4125 There's so much water so close to home. Brilliant.
Breaks my heart every time though.
It is interesting that quite often it is the less well-known songs that resonate so beautifully with us all. "If I could turn" is a perfect example along with Turning to white always makes me reflect deeply. "My winter coat'' is another example. So simple but it always takes me to a different place as if by magic.
You two are an absolute crackup. Love that sly UK humour. And thanks for reminding me of so much great Aussie music.
The other guitarist is Ash Naylor. He is one of Australia’s best guitarists. He has a few bands of his own (Even and the Ronson Hangup) but also plays for Paul as well as people like Dan Sultan.
Master songwriter. Tunesmith. Great guy
Can't wait for the next 2 days.
Yeah, I don't envy Chris's task here because it's not just choosing which songs, but then you have to choose which performance, impossible. If anyone can do it he can though, I trust 'the curator' to bring us the best of 'the bard'. Thank you all.
I'm 57 and every time I hear this beautiful thing it's like the first time. Thanks PK 🥰
Yep, Paul had some of the nation's best musos on stage with him in that Careless clip. Serious musicians; no pretensions to fame etc. I seem to remember Vika and Linda Bull singing the second track at some point. They often write songs with Paul. Can't remember if you've reacted to their material before? Amazing singers.
I feel the world missed the genius of Paul Kelly but Australian's didn't miss a chord of Paul whether the Dots, the Coloured Girls or the Messengers it's been decades of a ride.
Such a stunning songwriter - and an immaculate performer. If I could start today again is one of my favourite songs, not just favourite Paul Kelly songs.
Ash Naylor who also plays guitar in the background in Careless is an absolute genius and has his own band called Even. He has also done some solo stuff including recent instrumental LPs called Soundtracks 1 & 2. He has played with many bands and artists and was recently on tour with The Church in the US before coming home to release new music.
Love it!
Very nice, enjoyed these two tracks a lot.
As well as being a great singer songwriter Paul has also been generous enough to pass on some of his songs…. If I could start today again was also recorded by Vika & Linda Bull for one of their solo albums….
You gents are doing a wonderful job with PK.
Gotta do 'Everything Turning to White' - simply haunting.
While that first song was indeed amazing, I have to say that the second song is one of the most beautiful songs about being human I've ever heard. Paul Kelly is such a wonderful songwriter.
I used to live a block away from the house Paul Kelly grew up in, in Adelaide. He'd long moved out by the time I got there. It's not interesting but apparently it's true.
The original video for If I Could Start Today Again is worth a look. Good work guys.
On the subject of the quality of the band in Careless, the other guitarist is Ashley Naylor, now a full-time member of The Church. But he also keeps his own band, Even, going. They’ve been around since the mid 90s but the most recent album, Reverse Light Years, is a stunning achievement
On another. Note I was taking my dog outside to a forest for a day in the wood. Enjoying the ride I plugger int a Rory Gallagher and hit shuffle and was blown away with his guitar playing. Drove for a hour out and back. Nary a bad song. He was fantastic as a vocalist and especially good when playing guitar both acoustic and Electric
Definitely deserves a listen
Know his wonderful songs but that last one always gets me right here. Fantastic curating Chris!!!!
Think adding 'vegas' to the end of a place name is to denote tasteless, over cashed glitz & shallowness. My old hometown is often tagged Brisvegas & that does seem to be true of much of the newer development in the city
Nailed it! Yes, some parts of Bris are and deserve the Vegas tag others are still authentic.
Really worth you guys watching the stock-videoclip to the song 'If I Could Start Today Again' ........ is a perfect story-telling match.
Next level songwriting
Wow every song is so powerful. 😮😊 thanks boys thanks Chris . Keep em coming . Maybe the question of Paul Kelly week 2 is on the cards .
Definitely got enough great songs for 2 weeks👍
If you live long enough, there will be inevitably be something you have done to cause ‘If I could start today again’ to pierce your soul. It’s a humbling song.
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but Dan, who sings the high bit, is Paul's nephew.
Our Paul as you say is the most wonderful song writer.
His songs are amongst my most loved for meaning and feeling.
I’ve been lucky enough to see him live several times, his bands are always terrific.
.
We talk about PK’s songwriting ability, but he is also a fantastic musician, playing both the guitar and harmonica at the same time ❤
There’s not one song of his that doesn’t touch me in some way. ❤
Colin Hay is another excellent song writer you should check out.
Paul Kelly sure makes you think and pulls on your heartstrings
Counselling?? ...That is what the Pub's for !
That's a great band he has, you should check out Rockwiz, this is basically the house band: Ash Naylor, Pete Luscomb etc.
Enjoyed todays song by Paul Kelly
Two more terrific songs! Thank you, Chris!
Paul is simply amazing. How good is "start the day again". Explicit enough to tell the story. But also very vague, so the listener can make their own interpretation.... Maybe from their own mistakes or something they've seen.
Unbelievably difficult to do that. Love pk
Chris is on fire with his selections. Two brilliant songs.
You can’t beat PK, his swan song is easily - how to make gravy 👍
Phenomenal choices of performances Chris.
Paul is an incredible chameleon of a songwriter. Every song seems so personal regardless of the reality - he can sing from so many people's point of views, it's really quite astounding.
This genius is most evident when he sings from in a woman's POV.
'Everything's turning to White' is not only my favourite PK song (just) but a spine tingling tour de force of brilliant songwriting.
I wasn't expecting it to be in this initial week, but certainly hope it finds a place in future deep dives into the great man's extensive catalogue.
Doing a great job all - it is going all too quick.
Enjoying this week immensely. Great job so far, Chris. Paul is a superstar.
Look up PAUL Kelly Tram Session on YT. A fun version of this song.
Living National Treasure
Great stuff lads, The incredible Mr Kelly ! Y.N.W.A
Love, love, love that you guys get it.
Alex and George great job of presenting these tracks.
Chris, thank you for selecting these tracks and providing insight I have never had about Paul Kelly. When I saw the titles of the two songs here tonight, I thought I didn't know either of them. I was half right. I have heard Careless a bit before; I just didn't know the name of the song. However, 'If I Could Start Today Again' I don't think I have heard before; so, I am in new territory.
Both of these songs are wonderfully written but I was really moved by the second track. We all have said or done things we wish we could take back or have a do-over on. If I Could Start The Day Again was a perfect encapsulation of this sentiment. Simply beautiful.
Hey enjoy you time away you deserve some time to recharge.
You guys need to watch the official video for, "If I could start today again", but warning, it's challenging. And your words are ironic...
Thanks. It's different but "If I could Start Today Again" reminded me of Townes van Zandt, Maybe I shouldn't refer to a non-Aussie here but he is also a brilliant story-telling songwriter.
You can refer to whoever you like! Thanks for contributing
I acknowledge he’s a great song writer. If I was drinking a bottle of gin listening to him I’d be in a crying depressive state. Not my cup of tea at all is our PK. I don’t drink gin, by the way.
Fabulous
Thanks lads ❤
Careless is one of his best for me. I used to love singing it and would blend his and Renee Geyer's version of it. 💓
Anyway, that was one of the better versions I've heard, there's one that some young fellas did it with him and totally ruined it and I could see Paul was kinda gritting his teeth, it made the poor guy very uncomfortable.😅
Also, because I love pretty much everything Paul does, if I could start today again, is very relatable, but still lovely.
Nice choices Chris 😘🤌
One of my favs is Paul and Kasey Chambers (you reacted to her Lose Yourself cover previously) singing "When we are old and mad". They have had a few collabs over the years. Paul inducted Kasey into our Hall of Fame a few years back and his speech is brilliant (done in poetry). Well worth watching. ua-cam.com/video/4t_m9DSJ6yU/v-deo.htmlsi=xGGc7JcnqSv7kl0B
If I could start the day again reminded me of Vincent just a tiny bit, never heard it before and probably not quite as melodic as Vincent and nowhere near as good a song but I could hear that there just a bit. No doubt Paul Kelly is a bit of a Don Mclean fan as well.
I've done all the dumb things.
Haven’t we all!
careless is an OK song but not one of my favourites perhaps I could care less.
