The effect is called a "talk box." A talk box is an effects unit that allows musicians to modify the sound of a musical instrument by shaping the frequency content of the sound and to apply speech sounds (in the same way as singing) onto the sounds of the instrument. Typically, a talk box directs sound from the instrument into the musician's mouth by means of a plastic tube adjacent to a vocal microphone. The musician controls the modification of the instrument's sound by changing the shape of the mouth, "vocalizing" the instrument's output into a microphone.

Good news❗ Peter Frampton is now on tour. March 16th 2024 he performs in Windsor Ontario Canada and after that throughout the USA. He is in a seventies now so this may be your last opportunity.... please don't miss it❗ He's incredible incredible incredible. I saw him in Denver back in 2011 and it was definitely the highlight of my 5 years living in the usa.
I was 16 years old when I went to a Peter Frampton concert at Bobby Maduro Baseball Stadium in Miami in 1976. It was a great show, and it was my concert. The talking effect during Frampton's guitar solo was a pedal connected to a wire that ran up to a mouthpiece connected to the microphone. Frampton would use the mouthpiece and varying weight on the pedal to create a talking effect via his guitar. It was really interesting and great to see and hear. Unforgettable.

Gentlemen...I have heard this song hundreds of times in my life and I still get goosebumps, especially when I see this being new to someone who's never heard it. This was the greatest era of music, without question. 1976 was the greatest single year in all genres.
I am 62 years old. When I was a sophomore in high school, this song was on the radio every half hour. Peter Frampton became a massive rock star in no time.
Guys this was awesome. You said, I want to see it. Watch him play the guitar in tune with his voice. It’s very difficult. Peter was a great guy. Watch him smile and have a great time. He was loved for always giving a great show and being just a great person. Also one of the top ten guitarist in my opinion. When SRV compliments you in your guitar playing you must be good. Play the song again please with the concert live on the Saturday night special. Just put Peter Frampton do you feel like I do Saturday night special. And watch it. I would love to watch it with you
Absolutely!! The 70's was THE BEST ERA OF MUSIC!! It was an absolute joy to grow up during that time listening to ALL different genres...it doesn't get better!!! Check out Al Green!
You guys are right 💯%!! You say this performance was off the charts, and you couldn't be more right! Yes, there are other versions of this song live, but they don't hold a candle to THIS performance. There was definitely magic in the air that night. Every note was perfect, and perfectly executed!! One of the very best live performances ever, no doubt! I was 8 years old when this record came out, and yes, thank goodness for my older siblings in the house, they got it!!! This along with The Eagles Hotel California, Boston, Fleetwood Mac Rumors, that also came out that year...come on man!! 🤘🤘
The '70s!!! 1970.. I was 13 starting High School; "Stairway to Heaven" was our 8th-grade float theme. 1976 I graduated from High School= Frampton Comes Alive!! Imagine all of the MUSIC in between. I got to live the 60s as a child and hear these songs on the radio, watched the Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan w/my sisters and my mother. Rocked the '70s as a teen, and in the '80s started my 20s. Concerts I attended: Elton John, Diana Ross, Styx, Heart, the original Lynrd Skynrd (twice), Chicago, Neil Diamond, Bob Seeger (2x), Blue Oyster Cult, and more. I had no idea how singularly special that time in music was.
Fantastic reaction to a legendary guitarist and musician. Please react to the video of the live performance. It’s worth watching Frampton live! His enthusiasm and passion is infectious. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The wife and kids dread this song coming on Sirius on road trips - the volume in the family SUV goes to about 18 to accommodate my rock 'n' roll and artillery ears. This and "Hush" drive the family nuts...
Saw Frampton during the '70s at 17 years old at those famous Day on the Green Concerts in Oakland CA. The music was the best. I'll never forget the 70's music. I may be old but I saw a lot of good bands 😁
In the 50's the seeds were planted for Rock And Roll Music. In the 60's it grew stronger and became the mature music it was and in the 70's it blossomed and turned into the beautiful flower it was back then. I was born in April 1954, the same year as R&R, we grew up together, lucky me.
this was their best performance of this song. A friend brought this live version to my house in the 70,s said you got here this to believe it. midnight special was good but i think this performance was the best had just the right atmosphere.
I forget the year this came out, but it was #1 on the chart all summer long. I must have heard it a thousand times, literally! It takes me back to one of the best times of my Life.
I'm pretty sure up to this point it was the biggest selling live album ever recorded. If you were a boomer into rock in the 70s this *WAS* in your record collection. It wasn't even a question. And although it had been used before, it really introduced a lot of people to the voice box guitar effect. That sound blew people out of the water. I was lucky enough to see him perform this in the early 2000s in Grant Park Chicago and it was every bit as historic as you can imagine. We in the audience played our parts well LOL, and I was suddenly 18 all over again.
I'm glad you're doing this version as a first listen instead of the Midnight Special video; this is soooo much better. This one makes you feel like you're at the concert, you can really get lost in the sauce! Now you can go watch the video and compare. I was a junior in high School when this came out - yeah, we had it pretty good with our music.
@@dmCurator I think that was me. I made that statement under another comment. The midnight special version is rather boring compared to the link I posted. Plus the msv is an 8 entire mins shorter!!! I've posted this link all thru the comments hoping the dudes see it.
I agree 70's was the top of rock music. When I first heard this Frampton song I had heard of but never heard Frampton perform and I was just as blown away as you two. Definitely one of all time favorites! Thanks a entertaining reaction.
I saw Peter do this song at the L.A. Forum in 1977. Frampton played a guitar solo, then a piano solo, then a drum solo in the same song… a 30 minute version of this song….AMAZING
This was some 45 years ago, think about that! Frampton, as far as I know, is still playing / touring, there's a great interview with him on the Rick Beato channel, as well as a 'what makes this song great' reaction which goes into the nuts and bolts of the chords, production, etc. - both are worth a listen, Peter is so humble, and is a top quality person and musician.
just so you guys know, I got to experience this live and in person at a place called Sun Tan lake near Riverdale New Jersey in 1992. It was a perfect summer day and I laid on a picnic table and listen to this live. It was the most peaceful restful memorable moment of my life. I could’ve died there and it would not have been a waste. What a performer and what show. I was about 22 then and now I’m 52. I got a real kick out of your reaction. It brought back memories for me. And I’m sure if you were their life you would’ve even enjoyed it more. But you guys are right there’s something about the song that’s just awesome.
he has a live video...saw him twice in LA. the crowd of 50,000 would make your ears and eyes bleed. yeah talk box through his gibson les paul black beauty guitar ...quite a thing to experience
I've seen Frampton do this song live several times and he always put on a great show! I have seen a good percentage of the bands you react to live and I always feel blessed to have been able have actually seen them. It is a real shame that there is nothing out there for guys like you to be able to experience this kinda thing live! Back in the 70's there were no Db limits so you could actually feel the kick drum and bass guitar thumping your body! Your ears would also be ringing for a few days but you really didn't care!
"Bob Mayo, on keyboards!" Damn right. Rest in peace, Bob. I was 15 when this came out in 1975, and we had never heard anything like it before. The band was spot-on. Listen to the studio version of the song and you'll think "It's OK". But the live version was mind blowing. The first time I heard it was when the album was released and a local rock station played it end to end sides 1,2,3 and 4 (2-record set). I got it all recorded on cassette, and later bought the album (more than once, LP and later CD). #1 selling album on the charts for years!
My 18yr son and I went on a road trip bout a year ago and got to see Frampton at Red Rocks in Colorado. (Most awesome venue) It was JUST LIKE Framton comes alive. AND suprise opening act: Jason Bonham. It rained like hell for 30 min and we hid in the rocks. Then saw fantastic show with lightning and the Denver skyline in the distance and the most beautiful girl I have ever seen sitting beside me. Magical!
I was one of the lucky ones to see this tour in Dayton (or Cincy?) Ohio. We were all blown away! I knew of Peter from Humble Pie and Framptons Camel, but this was one of the greatest live albums of my generation. Yes, that is a guitar through a talk-box. The guitar notes come up through a tube into Peter’s mouth and he makes words/sounds by moving his throat/mouth/lips! As you can imagine….we were all blown away!
Love this album - everyone had this playing all summer long on the hot beaches of Galveston. Saw him in Houston in 78’ doing acoustic w Doobie Brothers. What a concert. Frampton is the best. Thanks for playing !
I just wrote about the same thing before I read your comment. Hey, I'm in Houston. So we already know. Lol. Can you believe we are using words like "lol" to communicate? We didn't have cellphones or computers, but we were happy (and stoned), as hell. They'll never know : )
I was there! Right after it hit all of the FM radio stations. It was everywhere. 30 seconds after he starts this song you could hardly see the stage through the smoke! Do You Feel Like We Do? Yes you did, you didn't have a choice. Great show, great album
Peter Frampton had a UK Top Ten single as a member of the Herd - he was 16 and was voted "The Face of 68" by a teen magazine. He chose not to go down the pop route but joined forces with Steve Marriot, of the Small Faces, who was a big star at the time. They formed Humble Pie but were not the huge success they might have expected. Peter then formed his own band Frampton but they were only moderately popular. Then out of nowhere, Frampton Comes Alive was released in 1975 and became a worldwide sensation...it was like a child movie star who could only get bit parts had suddenly won an Oscar. There was definitely a video of this concert but it doesn't seem to be available...it was the ultimate chilled-out good-time rock gig. Peter had a goofy smile and the look of a guy who was just having a blast and the guitar/voice box was innovative back then...this song still sounds great nearly 50 years on.
The talk box is hooked up to the guitar and the two make a sound together by the guitar player simultaneously talking into the box while operating the electric guitar. I THINK(?) David Gilmore used it sometimes but I’m not 100% sure. Peter Frampton is still alive with us today and seems like a very nice guy not that I know him-lol. I remember in the 70’s when I was a little girl I had an older teenager friend/neighbor who called me over to her house one day and brought me into her bedroom, slapped some head phones on me and said”LOOK AT HIM!!😍” It was his “I’m In You” album and I never was the same.Sexxxxyyyyy🥵 😁J in Tx
Actually, the Talk-Box ( back then) was run off of a separate guitar amp with the speakers disconnected and the signal from the guitar going to the box instead. The box had a driver that fed the guitar signal into a long plastic tube and out into the player's mouth, who could mouth the words or just make sounds. The tube usually was mounted on the mic stand, so the guitar sounds ( altered) could be picked up by the vocal mic and sent to the big P.A speakers. The player doesn't sing, the guitar does that, replacing the voice. The first one I heard of in 1970 was made by Kustom Electronics and was enclosed in a psychedelic bag that the player wore strapped to their back. It was called " The Bag" ,but while looking really cool was somewhat awkward to actually use. I first heard it on Iron Butterfly and Steppenwolf's albums around that time. I didn't have one, but held one in the store when nobody was looking. It had a paisley cloth pattern with 3 inch long white fringe around the bottom. Looked a lot like a ladies purse, which probably explains why it wasn't a success until later when somebody else made it into a floor unit, like Frampton used a little later on in the 70s. Today's fx boxes imitate this by plugging a mic and guitar into a circuit that replicates the effect, but you do have to sing into the mic to get any sound, which comes out of the regular guitar amp. It sounds really complicated, but is actually quite simple. At the end of the Talk-Box section you can hear Peter Frampton sing along with the guitar ( voice and Talk-Box ) on the last " Whoa!" . Don't doubt me .
So glad you reacted to Frampton! He is a LEGEND. That album is especially well-known in the U.S. as one of the top selling albums of all times. Really enjoyed the reaction guys. Thank you!

I would love to watch it with you
We had the best musicians ever back then . Visionaries . Freaken amazing !!!
Absolutely!! The 70's was THE BEST ERA OF MUSIC!! It was an absolute joy to grow up during that time listening to ALL different genres...it doesn't get better!!! Check out Al Green!
Child of the 70's and 80's class of 85. What a time to be alive! Great memories! 😎
I saw him back in the 70's at an outdoor stadium concert in Philadelphia, WOW is all I can say, I remember every minute, what a great musician!!❤❤
In the 50's the seeds were planted for Rock And Roll Music. In the 60's it grew stronger and became the mature music it was and in the 70's it blossomed and turned into the beautiful flower it was back then. I was born in April 1954, the same year as R&R, we grew up together, lucky me.
Yes! Singing this song is fun! The 70s were great!🥰😎😁❤️🇺🇸🇺🇦🇬🇪🇺🇸❤️
It may not get better when it comes to music but have faith. True story. And everyone should get to “feel like I do”. This song is a part of history.
This Album was issued in the mail, if you were a teenager, in the 70’s. Everyone had this album!!!! 🎸🔥🤘
Absolutely!!🎸 🔥
Peter Frampton is one of the Best !!!
@ modmary: I was, and I did 😉
U r very right , this is art 😉😎💯🔥🎵🎼🎶💯🔥😉😎 this is pure unadulterated rock & roll at finest 🎵🎼🎶💯🔥😉😎
this was their best performance of this song. A friend brought this live version to my house in the 70,s said you got here this to believe it. midnight special was good but i think this performance was the best had just the right atmosphere.
His father was David Bowie's art instructor in secondary school and he used to listen to Buddy Holly songs with David on lunch breaks. Cool guy
Yes the 70's was definitely the best era of music
HOW TERRIFIC!🥰
Proud younger boomer here. 60 and so blessed I had all this great music in my teenage years 😁
Actually it WAS the largest selling record ever, at the time. ☮️
One of the best live songs ever...
Yes the waves of audience reaction are a totally essential element of what makes this so great.
Here's the vid of that performance .. check it out .. not midnight special ..
ua-cam.com/video/w01WBM8e0tw/v-deo.html
Totally agree. And as someone else said, the audience ambience is an essential element.
@@dmCurator I think that was me. I made that statement under another comment. The midnight special version is rather boring compared to the link I posted. Plus the msv is an 8 entire mins shorter!!! I've posted this link all thru the comments hoping the dudes see it.
I was 11 when this came out. Best era of music. Growing up in the South Lynyrd Skynyrd was my favorite
You guys should have been born back in the late 50s early 60s you appreciate the rock n roll man! Brilliant! I love watching you react! ☝️👌
A talk box mixes guitar sound with voice. It is a tube in the mouth/throat. Frampton is a master at it...
Bob Mayo on the keyboards, Bob Mayo.
I love watching people's mind being blown by great music! 🤯
I'm so glad you did this version and not the live version. Great reaction. 🙂
Me too!
"Bob Mayo, on keyboards!"
Damn right.
I. Love. This. Song. It is my last summer in high school before I quit and went into the military. This. Yes!
This song came out when I was 15. My friends and I would jam to this driving to the beach in Southern California!
Saw Peter play this in the mid 70s, in Henrietta NY. BEST CONCERT EVER!!!
Magical!
Playlist worthy.$uperSeventies!!!
You just got Framptoned!!
Haha!
YAY - in 1976 my Father took me to mall to buy my first album & I chose this;)
Frampton Comes Alive.... Kiss Alive......Made in Japan....Seconds Out......Yessongs....Song Remains The Same....all great live albums
Love this album - everyone had this playing all summer long on the hot beaches of Galveston. Saw him in Houston in 78’ doing acoustic w Doobie Brothers. What a concert. Frampton is the best. Thanks for playing !
WOWWW.. You’re not lying that was a concert!😍
It was a huge album here in Australia too
I just wrote about the same thing before I read your comment.
Eddie Van Halen once said that Peter was in his mind a phenomenal guitarist.
I remember in the 70’s when I was a little girl I had an older teenager friend/neighbor who called me over to her house one day and brought me into her bedroom, slapped some head phones on me and said”LOOK AT HIM!!😍” It was his
“I’m In You” album and I never was the same.Sexxxxyyyyy🥵
😁J in Tx
David Gilmore does use the talk box on the track "Pigs" ...and is seen on live performances using it.
Joe Walsh used the talk box too in Rocky mountain way
@@jimled50jl49 yes , he also used it in the track " keep talking" from Division Bell.
@@QuadRippler Yes - Such a great track with Stephen Hawking lending a hand with the lyrics. Brilliant !
Thank you!
