I wore box braids, but in between, I would wear my natural in twist or something similar for a few months, then put the braids back in. I think you can wear them but you have to take care of your hair while wearing them and also let your hair breathe.
This recently happened to be unfortunately. I had my sister do my hair as I wasn’t able to do it myself because of my busy schedule with college. She told me not to put anything in my hair, which I didn’t think twice about it beforehand. I kept my faux locs in for two months and when I went to detangle my hair, it was so try that even with water and leave in, my hair still felt extremely dry. I had an immense amount of tangling. Even two of the tangles I undid weren’t shedded hair. It was 6-8 inches of curly hair that looked as if I had just cut my own hair. Never again.
That is one of the reasons I stopped getting braids. I’m post menopausal and I suspect that my hair can’t withstand the tension of a braided style for even a short period of time. HOWEVER, my natural short hair when washed, conditioned combed through with a hydrating leave in and sprayed with olive oil sheen, my hair looks fabulous.
Same, coily and thin. grows steady but after 5 years I’m a few inches past my neck. I just keep doing flat twist the past 2-3 years different ways. It breaks off so some of its just 3 inches 😂
U might be interested in washing with the style in w a no suds shampoo to avoid matting then maybe try styling every 4 wks, that's wat I've been doing❤
@maryjflanagan1922 sounded like you’ve learned to love your natural hair. Great! A lot of us don’t. Nor do we realize that coily-kinky hair is very fragile compared to other less curly hair shafts. Most everyday “wear and tear” is high in tear for our fragile shafts so while our hair grows continually the ends further from the scalp break easily. Silk pillow cases and scarves are worth the investment. Besides not snagging our hair, the fabric breathes. Learn how to retain moisture which also inhibits breakage. Like Narada says focus on health first. The hair is continuously growing so length will take care of itself if we properly take care of our hair.
Braids are perfectly fine. The problem is. We tend to think that the hair is protected from the braid it's self and fail to use oil and spray conditioners to protect the hair and seal in moisture. I swear by oil and spray conditioner particularly braid sprays. If you don't it will break and fall out.
Same thing happened to me. My twa started going through the awkward stage so I decided to get braids/twists with added hair. I would use a leave in spray to moisturize my hair and also did a weekly shampoo and condition. I still ended up with severely dry ends. Got a cut and now I’m back at my twa but I love short hair 😊. I’m definitely done with extensions.
@@Theylovveslim There’s no way I could only shampoo once or even twice a month. I work out 5-6x a week and sweat a lot in my scalp. Also, I stick with moisturizing shampoos. Synthetic hair is more drying than shampoo could ever be.

Yes I've been speaking on this on the channel for some months now. It's too much to break down in text but chances are if you suffer from it, you will know
Before hair comes out of the follicle and goes through chemical changes is it a liquid eventually when the hair is too dry and brittle you can’t restore it to its original state anymore it will break off and split up if you don’t chop it off first
It’s the synthetic plastic that people are putting in their hair. The braids of back in the day (the 1900’s) was not the same plastic as it is now, it seems like they cheapened every thing so much that it’s changing peoples body and massively drying out your hair. When I was little I would only use human hair, but the human hair costs are outrageous now. So I n true American fashion they lower the costs and cheapen the product. I have been saying all these girls claiming “protective hair” styles and not one of them I can say I have seen with hair past their shoulders. My grew my hair waist length no problem back in the day. I tried doing braids one time a few years ago cuz I never had issues with growing and maintaining my hair but was forced to use the fake hair due to the unreasonable costs of braiding human hair and it messed up my hair. I had to cut my ends off and lost all the new length I gained. The I tried to do a half sew in half cornrow in the front this Jan and it was a disaster. The lady insisted I couldn’t use human hair that it must be the fake hair in the front and she also snuck in the fake hair to braid up my hair for the sew in and I only had it for 3 weeks and it ruined my hair. I had to cut so much off. To me it’s not a big deal cuz I know how to grow my hair and fast but it made me see why I do not see many girls with long hair. The plastic is terrible for your system ladies. We have surrounded ourselves in plastic and the plastic for the hair is NOT the same as back in the day (80’s) this stuff is DANGEROUS . So many more balding ladies and a lot of short hair girls wearing “protective styles” for YEARS. The plastic will mess with your fertility ladies.. Not to mention how many women have dry trashy hair when I see it. There is no benefit to these styles. I’ve been telling people to stop wearing their hair in the plastic. If your hair is thinning do not put fake hair on it just fix your thyroid and regulate your hormones and fix your system . Stay away from the plastic ! EDIT: forgot to add not only is the synthetic hair drying out the hair but it’s also allowing the parasitic overgrowth in the scalp. USE APPLE CIDER VINEGAR to kill the fungus aka dry scalp/dandruff cuz THAT is what it is. The plastic allows for the parasitic overgrowth in your entire body another reason why so many women are loosing their hair cuz it’s weakening your defenses along with the food you eat. Parasites are NO JOKE. You THINK it’s endometriosis/fibroids/ ovarian cysts but really it’s a parasitic over growth and you are using EVERY THING against yourselves. Make silk amino acids trend again the proteins will grow back your hair once you start to work on killing the parasites. They eat yours, it’s their favorite food along with the sugar and your B Vitamins.. WAKE UP LADIES!!
You are totally correct!!! I got my thyroid corrected (a process, but not that hard, just takes effort knowlege dedication but it's life or death + HAIR! mine grew back lush and thick at 68 using grass fed beef GELETIN 2x's daily in my coffee tea pluc 1500 mgs C plus handfuls of other supps but the Geletin is massive game changer, more so than collagen et al, more glycine. Ivermectin is a Gift from God for everything parasite virus including Cancer, with Dog wormer Fenbendazole. Total Cures. Who knew? THEY DID.
Braids? No, but wash and go's did grow out my hair. It's not gonna work for everyone, but it did for me. However, you need to set them properly. I wash my hair at night and use a leave in, twist my hair in 4 sections and go to bed (I like to split my wash days) and the next day I take down each twist and use that piece as my section for the wash and go (8 sections in total) I re wet, smooth with a brush and apply a non drying gel, enough to make a gel cast. I'll air dry or apply a heat protectant and diffuse, and I don't break the gel cast I just protect it at night with a scard and bonnet and let it soften throughout the week. I get my quarterly trims (I blow out then trim) and my ends have never looked better. But any braids with synthetic hair is bound to cause some damage, and human hair is an exploitative business that I will not support.
I don’t think he said wash n gos don’t grow out hair. They do. But what’s the health of this grown out hair? Is it healthy? Or just long? I think that’s what he means.
Let's be clear. It wasn't the braids that did this to her hair. It was the fact that she thought box braids was a get up and go style. She neglected her hair. Had she still been moisturizing her hair and doing at least a weekly braid routine her hair would not look like this.
I’m guilty of not taking good care of my hair when I’m wearing braids. I have found that if I wash my hair or wet my hair when I have braids in, my hair frizzes up in my braids and then my braids look old and sloppy. I pay so much to get my hair braided that I want to get as much wear as the style will allow me. My hair is a decent length but I haven’t tried to blow dry my hair super straight in years nor have I had a trim in a while. I’m sure I have inches that need to be chopped off. I just find slicking my hair into a ponytail when I don’t have braids in to be super convenient. I would love to rock a twa but it’s not my best look as my hairline is not the best plus I have a big ol’ forehead. 😂😅
The day I realised that synthetic extension dry hair out was when I had a kinky twist installed. Despite the fact that I washed and moistured more than 5 times, my hair still dried out completely and I was so scared that I had to remove it within two weeks.
Use rebundle banana fiber hair , yes it’s 45$ a pack but no itching when it’s in and hair is moistures that knekalon hair is plastic and will tear your hair out and disrupt your hormones

This is so true. My daughter's low porosity hair kept breaking off and retained no moisture everytime she came out of braids. We deep conditioned in between installs, and moisturized well before a new set. We couldn't understand what the issue was, because we thought the braids were truly a protective style, and we did very little maintenance while in the braids. Because we could really treat the strand while I'm the braids , the weave was sucking the life out of her hair. Fast forward, she had to start wearing protective styles WITHOUT the extensions. We were able to repair her hair, but she lost a lot of length. From about 48-50 inches down to 28-30 inches. Now we grow responsibly!
Its not everything, I just chilled on the box braids and scalp braids with weave. I got tired of seeing styles that look like they were painted on my head anyway.
Ideally yes, but at this point it's probably just better for her to live with it. I'm hoping we can transition it off but that requires consistency and diligence. That's not realistic for most people. I know what her hair could and should be like but you can't miss what you never had.

But if I ever cut my locs off and wear braids I know now what to do. Nothing is worse than growing out your hair and having to cut it off
@rondas7772 you have an interesting opinion. What are you seeing? I see dull lifeless, faded hair, lacking the lustrous quality of natural healthy hair. I don’t understand how applying heat to damaged hair is an improvement. not a solution for unhealthy hair. And from Narada’s description the hair has irreparably lost the ability to retain moisture. Please tell me how applying heat to hair in that condition is an improvement in the health.
@deborahpollitt7533 I think she, like many people (stylists included) like to flat iron the hair because it allows their eyes to see the inconsistencies in the hair that shows where the split ends reside because split ends won't smooth out with a flat iron no matter how much heat you use. The problem is that doing a silk press on her hair is pointless because it's just going to puff up within minutes because of how damaged her hair is and she still wouldn't see inconsistencies because most of her hair is consistently damaged. People are not used to seeing damage on textured hair without straightening it.
What messes folks up are the braiders with those stupid ssa rules such as no leave in conditioner, grease or oil-if so, I won't service you. Smh! Thank you for speaking out, Sir. ❤

A fiber with no regenerative properties to it can be revived? Basic cosmetology theory would say otherwise.... Why would people have to get their ends cut then?
@AfrikanHairGod hair at the follicile and scalp are the main players in growth and absorption because after hair is grown from follicile, it is still prone to damage and needing trim. I am only speaking from my experience with mine and my daughters hair. We use very little moisturizering products for our hair and my youngest, almost 30 yrs. old, use no products for moisture retention, but our hair continues to grow very thick and long. Our protective styles consist of big braids under wigs or gelled down ponytails. We do have split ends when we go get trims, but very little is trimmed off due to split ends. I'm not debating because you have the knowledge, but her length retention seems to be for the styles she wants to achieve, meaning it doesn't have to be great or perfect for braided styles but a problem for heat requiring styles.
This message does not apply to all. Ladies don’t be discouraged long hair or short hair is everything. it is your crown.
Damage doesn't apply to all???
Braids are perfectly fine. The problem is. We tend to think that the hair is protected from the braid it's self and fail to use oil and spray conditioners to protect the hair and seal in moisture. I swear by oil and spray conditioner particularly braid sprays. If you don't it will break and fall out.
Come on you have take care of your hair. along with box braids.
Thanks for sharing!!❤️
Shampoo is drying you’re apparently only supposed to do it like once a month maybe twice and co wash in between
@@Theylovveslim There’s no way I could only shampoo once or even twice a month. I work out 5-6x a week and sweat a lot in my scalp. Also, I stick with moisturizing shampoos. Synthetic hair is more drying than shampoo could ever be.
@@ajaimaniI would have to strongly disagree, plenty of times my hair felt velvety & soft after braids depending on the products I used. Shampoo is harsh in nature no matter what you do, even a moisturizing one is still stripping your hair in some way because that's what shampoo does.
@@fin4008 hair feeling soft does not mean it’s moisturized. My hair has also felt soft after taking it down due to the build up of oil and dirt. Regardless, I’ll take using shampoo and “drying” out my hair than a stinky scalp.

I did the back to back box braids myself for about 2 years while in school, but for the first week, I used scalp spray and oil everyday. After the first week, I'd spray and oil once or twice a week until take down and that worked out great for my hair. Those dry extensions will truly damage ur hair if ur not careful.
Usually a few protein treatments would help nurse my hair back to health when in a similar state
Protein won’t help the dryness - might make it worse. Maybe 1x but her hair needs moisture

Wait you cant add Moisture? Drying out to the point of no return? 😮 your hair can dry out this much? How do I know if my hair is so dry to the point of no return?
Does your hair ever feel moisturized? If not your hair is permanently dry
Yes I've been speaking on this on the channel for some months now. It's too much to break down in text but chances are if you suffer from it, you will know
@@AfrikanHairGodthank you for responding ❤❤❤
If the cuticle of the hair has been compromised, it won't hold moisture properly anymore. So yes, it looks dry and it will stay dry

This hair still had hope. My hair has been fried and then corrected over time. This hair is not as bad as mine. This is fixable.
Narada! I was just trying to explain this to someone who swears by box braids!!
Yeah, we tend to forget that hair, nails, and skin needs time to BREATHE!!!
Let's be clear. It wasn't the braids that did this to her hair. It was the fact that she thought box braids was a get up and go style. She neglected her hair. Had she still been moisturizing her hair and doing at least a weekly braid routine her hair would not look like this.
Braid extensions causes hair damage too... But they both compiled in her case.
I refuse to put braids in anymore for whatever they use to produce that Tak it sucks all the moisture out of my hair and takes my edges out.
@@helena3631 Thanks, sis. However, $45 converted in my currency is like half of my 1 month salary. I'll continue braiding my natural hair alone without extensions. Currently, it's at my bra strap at the back and almost at my nipple in the front.
I found that kinky synthetic hair MESSED up my hair when I was a loose natural. That was the first and last time I ever used that texture.
@@GizelleQuant Extremely drying. My hair was so dry that it felt like a dry leaf!
That's because kinky twist hair has a natural rough drying agent
Never wear braids, weaves back to black . I give my hair 2-3months rest
I think if she stops the braids and starts keeping a solid hair care routine it’ll bounce back!
Its not everything, I just chilled on the box braids and scalp braids with weave. I got tired of seeing styles that look like they were painted on my head anyway.
Wow, what does this mean? Does she have to shave it off and start all over? 🙁
Ideally yes, but at this point it's probably just better for her to live with it. I'm hoping we can transition it off but that requires consistency and diligence. That's not realistic for most people. I know what her hair could and should be like but you can't miss what you never had.
@@AfrikanHairGod Hi afrikan hair god I have a question? I am kind of going through the same situation with my hair, in your experience I wanted to ask is it possible that if you still have length but your hair is just so dried out that possibly maybe taking hair vitamins or some type of biotin could possibly help restore or improve the integrity of your hair?

The idea that this is irreparable damage doesn’t even make sense. The top of her head should look drastically different if that was the case, since it’s much newer and hasn’t had time to be as damaged as her ends yet but it looks the same.

Thanks for speaking the truth. Braids are a lazy style, and it's not great if you don't care for hair with treatment and trims.
I disagree that it is a lazy style. That is going a bit far. Braids are beautiful. She did not take care of her hair while she was wearing her braids. People are lazy…, braids are not
I’m having that problem now, but mine is because I bleached it and didn’t take care of it! Regardless of what I do it’s just always dry feeling and NEVER stays detangled . I’m starting over and transitioning. It’s not worth keeping on my head but I can’t big chip bc I look crazy with short hair 😂. Remove the damage....
I been through this! I use to think back to back box braids and sew ins was healthy. Now I only may do them for vacation ( like in my profile). Though my hair grew long, back to back braids had completely shredded my hair.
Her hair can be revived. It takes time and routine. This is not a point of no return, respectfully.
I am possibly wrong, but I am here to learn and take in what information you give.
@AfrikanHairGod So what are your recommendations on how to moisturize and care for your hair while in braids? Please and Thank You!
