    My favorite touch about Luigi's humming is that the lower his health gets the shakier it actually is.
    He goes from reasonably composed to "Sounds like the slightest noise is going to give him a heart attack."

    I remember playing this game as a kid, and legit being freaked out by some things like the butler. As a kid, I thought it was chasing me down, and I left that hallway and hid upstairs as fast as I could. I also being creeped out by all the bosses, and mashing the call Mario button. The thing that I realized about dark moon is it doesn't have nearly as much of a creepy vibe, but more of a cartoony feeling.

    Luigi's mansion dark moon was fun, but honestly the fact that they cut down the ghost variety and replaced with those generic ghosts that possess objects (its a good concept and they did some good things with it, but having ALL bosses be them isn't very interesting). It does have a lot of cool puzzles and new mechanics, and the idea of going to various mansions is really cool too, but it feels like overall it lost some of its character and atmosphere in exchange of more polished gameplay. I do like king boo's new design, really sets him apart from the pack.
    Overall, dark moon's gameplay is sharper, but i'd still say that the original luigi's mansion is more fun to play. Though i'd buy a luigi's mansion 3 in a goddamn heartbeat if they made one. They could easily mix the 'big open-ish mansion' from 1 with dark moon's multiple mansions, like, make the new area be a whole neighborhood, or a small town, even!
    I do hold a whole lot of nostalgia for luigi's mansion 1 (after all, it was my first gamecube game), and one weird but very funny memory i have of it is that my grandmother always found the way you could make luigi keep calling for mario very funny.

      Cool! I got mine quite some time after the game launched, after i won a discount coupon for a store in a raffle. Do you plan on reviewing it at some point? (i mean, you don't usually make videos of handheld titles)
      Despite the downgrades in some sections, i still feel dark moon is worth a shot if you enjoyed the first one. Nintendo certainly managed to make a REALLY smooth transition from the gamecube to the 3ds, in therms of controls. I do miss the original yanking mechanic to capture ghosts, but it really wouldn't work with the 3ds' analog stick (at least not without damaging it).

    • @UGKickflip
      @UGKickflip 7 років тому +4

      I think the main issue with Dark Moon is that it was made for a handheld. Handheld games are just inherently designed to be played in short bursts, hence why there are missions that constantly take you out of the mansion and back to the lab after you finish each one. It's good for a handheld, but Luigi's Mansion just didn't deserve to be ON a handheld. It's Gamecube counterpart is just better because of this.

    With Luigi's Mansion and Survival Horror: I would actually argue it essentially is a survival horror game, just a very defanged one. It has the basic features of one, and even the tone is somewhat spooky.
    Actually, one thing I'd praise the game for is getting just the right amount of spooky for kids (at least, saying it from my experience playing the game when I was young). It has a gloomy and kind of creepy atmosphere, but not enough to be truly uncomfortable. One thing I wanna give credit to in particular is the ghost's appearance and the sounds they make. They're kind of cute, but there is in fact something vaguely predatory-even sadistic-about them. The sounds they make also reinforce this, sounding both otherworldly and, again, predatory.

  • @TatsTopVideos
    @TatsTopVideos 5 років тому +29

    This was a great review =)
    One thing I don't think you mentioned though, was that the Hidden Mansion on the PAL Version, was incredibly difficult. It was much darker almost pitch black, you take twice as much damage, hearts are rarer to find, and they put much more difficult ghosts and more of them in each room. Not to mention the entire mansion is mirrored, but you can get more money and cash. Also getting Rank A on normal mansion was impossible on the PAL version because they increased Rank A to 150,000,000G, so the only way to get A Rank was to play Hidden Mansion.

    • @NitroRad
      @NitroRad  7 років тому +52

      I was thinking that too, but the Paper Mario games were written and created by other people. It was also confirmed canon that it's a separate universe from the main Mario universe in Paper Jam, so the Luigi in Paper Mario isn't the same Luigi in the main series.
      But even still, he seemed like.... kinda just a dude in Paper Mario. It was funny that he was really egotistical and never told the story how it really happened (Thousand Year Door), but Luigi's Mansion was the first game to really give him wilder characteristics, and to create the running character motifs they would use for the rest of the series.

    I love the fact that he did this game, I love his input and critique on it. I truly hope you keep progressing in your UA-cam career Mr. Rad. I always eagerly await your next video and I always get giddy when you upload. I can't wait for Biohazard (Resident Evil for the westerners) and Clocktower. Also am I the only one that gets Hotline Miami vibes from the intro and outro?
    But until then, happy Halloween everyone!
    But seriously, Anyone else get those vibes? It's not a bad thing, just an observation.

    As far as spooky Nintendo games go, I _really_ hope you check out the Metroid Prime trilogy. Two, specifically. It's hands down one of the scariest Nintendo games to date, and it beats Eternal Darkness by miles. It feels a lot like a Survival Horror game, at times. To be honest, Metroidvania games and Survival Horror games have always had a lot of overlap in terms of gameplay elements. The two key differences being this: Survival horror makes you explore places you don't want to, take you out of your element and try and scare you more. Metroidvania makes you want to explore, and discover, and collect new items. Survival Horror also usually has literal keys that open doors and let you explore more areas, whereas keys in a Metroidvania usually double as a weapon or movement upgrade and function as more than just a key. Metroid Prime 2 combines these genres, and it's actually genius. You want to explore to find more items and upgrades, either optional things like health expansions to make the game easier or necessary things like a double jump to progress further. At the same time though, you don't want to explore because you're afraid of what's around every corner and you're never sure if it's going to an enemy that you can take out in a couple of hits or one that can take you out in a couple of hits.
    Also on the button mashing thing, I find it ironic that one of the only Survival Horror games to do something similar and let you turn cranks faster by mashing the button faster or something along those lines is Resident Evil 4. A game that originated on the GameCube.
    EDIT: I forgot it was already Halloween... My city did literally nothing, and there were like 3 houses with decorations up in my neighborhood. It still feels like august...

    Holy shit, dude! I have so many memories with this game. This game was my childhood. I beat it like 13 times and it's probably the reason I like horror games. I found it to be kind of a "Survival Horror practice game". It has similar enough mechanics that when I started playing games like Resident Evil, I had the general idea of how to play them. This game had a HUGE impact on me.

    As a kid Luigi's Mansion was my favorite game because it was a game full of mystery to me. Every ghost, every room, key, puzzle, everything gave me that sense of discovery that as a kid I think few games can make you feel it up to that level. I remember shooting to the fake moon through the telescope was my favorite setpiece in a game as a kid. Luigi's Mansion made Luigi my favorite character until today.

    I wish in the seccond version there could be an area where you can just kinda talk to the portrait ghosts and learn a bit more about them. They talk to you in the game, but having more dialogue options and some backstories to how they became ghosts would be super interesting. As a kid, I always wanted to get to know them better, and especially to be able to pet spooky and give him love, poor doggo :'(.

    Tbh, my way of dealing with boos was constantly using the C-stick to move the vacuum on and off rapidly, sorta putting them into a constant "stun" where they don't move but panic, it tends to bring their hp down faster without them leaving the room. But eventually they break out of the "stun" and leave the room. But much less health than they normally do, making it faster to deal with them imo.
