The Evil Within was good. I feel like a lot of the issues with it was the fact that it was their first game and they didn't have Capcom throwing money at Mikami. I mean, look at all the changes that RE4 went through during development. We had, what, 4 different versions of that until we got the classic one we all love. Mikami didn't have that luxury with his own studio.
felman87 Idk about Storywise, Mikami has been very against Story in games, thinks it takes players out of the Gameplay. He originally had RE1 with just Cyborgs fighting ghosts and ghouls in a mansion with no plot
Dgaf Srh they got someone else to write RE1s Script, Mikami hadn't had a script written for the game, was called into meetings about it, said that story takes the players out of the game, so he thought why should there be a story at all. So Iowa (can't remember the rest of his name) was brought in and wrote the story of RE1. Which was a basic story, yes. But I always saw RE as a B-Movie style, took many notes from films like Dawn of the Dead, and some Italian zombie mock-offs of George Romero's Living Dead series. Also explains the pretty basic characters, like Chris Redfield being your Steryotypical B-Movie action hero spitting out one liners. So the silly basic story fits perfectly
Well, Behtesda own the studio, and is not like Bethesda is minor company. But I get that Resident Evil is and was more important for Capcom than The Evil Within for Bethesda.

While playing the game, I felt like the developers were told to 'make a survival horror game', and without further direction, they were like '.... alright, then lets make a game that is the definition of survival horror', and the result is a very solid, resource management horror game that really hearkens back to old school survival horror. I forgive it for not scaring me, because I haven't been scared by a game or movie in quite some time, but seeing footage of the sequel gives me hope for some scares. "very solid, resource management horror game that really hearkens back to old school survival horror" I just can't agree with this unless by "old school survival horror" you meant "Resident Evil 4" specifically... Many fans of the genre were left disappointed because when Mikami said he wanted to go back to the roots of the genre, he didn't mean to bring back a modernized take on RE1, but instead recycle a lot of the successful concepts of RE4, which is a game considered to be by many the beginning of the end of the (old school) survival horror genre. After surviving the horrors of STEM and Ruvik, he moved to Hollywood and become a famous actor...they didn't reveal his last name in the actual game, but it turns out it was "Nielson". He went on to star in Pink Panther and other famous movies. He even has the same white/grey hair!
I only recently played this after doing a Resident Evil binge and deciding to finally check it out, and I have to say it started rough but by the end it became one of my favorite Survival Horror games ever. My only real complaint was the bosses being very trial and error with a ton of them having 1 hit death attacks, but other than that I'd say it's at least on par with RE4 if not in some respects better. It's significantly more difficult than any Resident Evil to me, and in a good way. I'm not a fan of soulslikes and I hate people constantly drawing comparisons, but I imagine that it's the same sort of feeling those give you: super draining to fail, but you keep coming back for more and when you finally win it feels AMAZING and earned. Also, as weird as it may be, I didn't struggle to understand the plot at all and actually think it's one of the better ways to justify such a varied horror environment having it all be a mix of a bunch of people's memories and fears. Like how enemies and bosses are all vulnerable to fire because of what happened to Ruben as a child, or the church being the monstrous occult area because of Kidman and Ruben's negative memories of their parents forcing their religion on them. It's a cool idea that may not seem obvious without hindsight, but is executed really well imo. Very Silent Hill/David Cronenberg. In fact the whole game reminds me of Scanners, Videodrome, and Existenz, which knowing Mikami and co.'s fondness for western horror films/directors was probably the case. ESPECIALLY with sheer amount of body horror in the game.
The plot is what threw off people from this game? Yeah, like Resident Evil had a plot that made sense. And no one is saying shit about those games, aside from RE 5 and 6.
It was turn your brain off, over the top, zombie killing mayhem that i had no problem getting the platinum for...maybe I'm too accepting of how RE had changed at that time but something about how you felt like a complete badass no matter what campaign you chose was its main draw for me
Survival Horror games didnt interest me until I saw The Evil Within trailer. I thought it was survival horror in a Victorian Setting but its actually a mix of Inception meeting Silent Hill! You summarized the story right. I mean, a mystery stroy's got to start with a mystery and thats what they did. It's really not that confusing to me tho especially when Joseph comments that the locations are like "jumbled memories". The Evil Within really defines survival horror to me because of the number of ways you can chuck off enemies: traps, bottles, sneak kills to save ammo, fire and even your bare fist to buy yourself some time. As you've said, improvisation and I love that aspect of it.
Dude, I'll be honest with you? I snatched up The Evil Within on one of those Humble Bundle sales, where it was dirt-cheap... (see also, why my Steam library is stuffed full of games that I wanted to try out, bought on a whim, and just... look, I work full-time, and I'm a student, and I take care of family, and I CAN DREAM, DAMMIT), but I rather enjoyed your 'alternate take' on what I saw as a lot of people really not enjoying this game. I wanted to get the perspective from somebody that actually liked it, either because of, or in spite of its faults. So thank you for that, mate.
I have a unpopular opinion ...... "The Keeper" is honestly more scary and tense boss than "The Judgment" AKA "Pyramid Head" Even as a kid I laugh at pyramid head, but I fucking lost my balls when I fight The Keeper, especially the first time I fought him. Now to sit here and get the hate I deserve because Pyramid head is the best thing ever and is flawless in design and will always be the scariest thing ever in the history of forever.
I do reckon part of the reason Silent Hill can be a good horror is that, in supplying you with weapons, it makes you, the player, expectant of having to actually face the nightmare creatures, and what they represent...
Glad you like The Evil Within so much! Everything about it is so fun, freaky, and interesting. It does have some tedious and frustrating parts, but I’ve always found it great. The sequel is even better!
I loved this game, it is one of the best horror games. I cannot wait for The Evil Within 2. I've been avoiding all the gameplay so i go in as blind as possible.
I agree 100% one of the best, and my curiosity and extreme urge to completely scour the internet for any and all tidbits definitely has spoiled it a little for me. That being said the recent video by downward thrust was some serious spoiler material in my opinion and immediately cut the video short before getting too far...the game just needs to hurry and release lol
@@mayonnaise3959 No it doesn't. The first game is leagues ahead of the second one in terms of story, horror and originality. Also characters. Sebastian was just more likable and interesting in the first one. The only thing the second one has over the first is graphics and gameplay. Which by default it should have since it's the sequel. But art style goes to the first one too, way creepier looking.
7:34 So the crafting is made simpler and less annoying by just having a generic “crafting material” rather than specific required components? That’s so much better! The only real annoyance with crafting is the need to search for the necessary materials.
I got to say I'm glad I checked out your channel after a friend recommended it to me. I'm a huge old head for a lot of survival horror so seeing we have the polar opposite opinions on many games has been an interesting experience for me. I really like and respect your opinions and you're making me look at certain games from a new perspective. Keep up the good work my dude.
I would like to hear your take on Parasite Eve. The first 2 are on PS1 and the 3rd is on PSP. I love them and think you might too, if you have not played them already. great video.
On my PC the frame rate was constant 60 for me after latest patches (on release it was awful). No issues with textures either, but that is a common problem with the engine they were using. I think Evil Within 2 changed engines so both issues should be fixed (I hope).
Persons I didn't like a lot design choices with The Evil Within and how it was paced but it's cool to hear how positive Nitro is with that game. Survival horror is just an astounding genre
Holy shit, I've beat this game three times and I never, ever knew about that shoot the kneecap match trick. I always went for head shots to save ammo but this looks like a way better method. Getting so much out of your videos - feeling like I can finally tackle this at a higher difficulty now.
I loved Evil Within, warts and all…. but I was never low on ammo. Maybe I was just a crack shot but I always had enough fire power to take on the baddies.
One of my favorite games! I've completed it four times, cosplayed two characters (Joseph and Tatiana) and bought basically every piece of merch I could. I don't get all the hate, it's a game I am always able to go back to and in my opinion is really refreshing in a game industry where every horror game that comes out seems to be another Outlast.
Honestly I really like The Evil Within, and I think the sequel built on the gameplay from the first one in a good way. The Keeper is one of my favorite enemy designs in a horror game, and I love when it starts using it's own respawn mechanic as a way to get to you. Like it will just kill itself without a second thought just to come after you.
People need remember what survival horror was originally and use that tense decision making (AND NOT IN FUCKING QUICK TIME EVENTS) in if you need to melee, shoot or run.
I agree I just think people rather not admit when something scares them. On that point though I can't say I was "scared" but when Laura chased me and all those near misses where she'd almost catch me it definitely got my heart racing, and blood pumping
Nick Delancy or you know,,, maybe people have differ fears than you..? This game didn’t scare me once and i found it kinda boring but multiple scenes in DDLC were absolutely terrifying. Some people dont find monsters scary.
Arrogant Anarchist it’s not monsters that are scary. I don’t find many games scary in fact. Only other game that has ever had me as nervous is soma. For the same reason. It’s the chasing, the urgency to duck and dodge out of the way and attack at the same time. Facing Laura (the spider lady) had me so tense. Don’t see why you try to patronise those who find something jumpy. I didn’t find the dlc scary so clearly we differ.
I would also say this is one of my favorite games ever. Personally, I think the plot is brilliant. Sure it's a bit hard to follow, but you play the game from the perspective of someone who has absolutely no idea what is happening. Sebastian is a depressed, alcoholic smokestack of a cop; it makes sense to me that he's closed off and kind of a dick, also the short sprint time (though maybe not that short). I can forgive the sub par writing and dialog when the story did such a good job capturing my imagination, and the visuals were so interesting. This is one of those games where subsequent playthroughs made me like the game more and more each time. Also, you kinda discounted the story of the Executioner DLC, but I think that the connotations of that substory will be very important if Seb wants to get Lilly free from STEM in the sequel.
Evil Within has a great mechanic that is the match burning which was a unique way to kill enemy's which would of been scary if the enemies only died by fire.
It's my favorite genre but I don't think it even exists anymore. Even the remakes of re2 and re3 are pretty much action games now. They are great games but they just aren't "survival horror" anymore.
I got the PC version a couple months after it came out and the that version actually does run really well. Even on my aged GTX 660 card the game ran at a smooth 60 FPS the whole time, and it didn't have the texture pop in issue the console release has. As someone who enjoys both survival horror and adventure horror (I enjoyed Outlast and RE7 about the same for different reasons) I really enjoyed Evil Within and the DLCs following Kidman. I never really understood the story complaints personally as I actually found it rather intriguing and more interesting than I was expecting. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel. Also interesting factoid, the reason why a lot of characters in the game have Spanish sounding names is because originally the game was supposed to be set in Spain like RE4, but the devs decided to change the setting to the US but didn't really want to change the names.
The game will run like garbage if you have a monitor with 100 or Hz of refresh rate. I have a 144 Hz monitor ans I have to enable 60 Hz mode to play this poor excuse for a game
@@yunix2396 damn i hate how many developers just use usa for their settings We have a lot of countries with different building styles culture and fauna but i guess people love seeing the usa for the 1000 time Hell the usa itself has some interesting places but people always go to the generic us city style
Speaking of survival horror, I was wondering if you're going to check out "Agony" when it comes out. It's supposed to be a survival horror about escaping Hell. If you haven't heard of it, I'd suggest looking at the trailers.

It was definitely very memorable, and how many games can you really say that about? I’ve been looking forward to its sequel since it was announced.
Most of the things mentioned here that were seen as "bad" were things I didn't really care too much about at all. lol As I said in the previous comment, the worst part of this game, the thing that ruined it to the point where I'll probably never touch it again after beating it once, is the cheap, BS, instant kill garbage almost every boss has. It doesn't add difficulty to the game at all. The only thing it did was make me hate a game I should have loved. Mikami, you need to work on your ideas a little more. I do wanna play 2, though. I've heard it's better.

Halloween Special! Give us Resident Evil now! Btw you're on the roll right now, keep it up
I've got a lot on my plate for Halloween this year already, but I might do the RE series next year.
Nitro Rad cool! Will be waiting for it!!
The plot is what threw off people from this game? Yeah, like Resident Evil had a plot that made sense. And no one is saying shit about those games, aside from RE 5 and 6.
Some people love RE 6
Seriously?
It was turn your brain off, over the top, zombie killing mayhem that i had no problem getting the platinum for...maybe I'm too accepting of how RE had changed at that time but something about how you felt like a complete badass no matter what campaign you chose was its main draw for me
Asylum117 Yes
Yes actually. It's not hard to understand at all
Survival Horror games didnt interest me until I saw The Evil Within trailer.
"the calming sound of clair de lune in the distance" .... kaede this is for u
Well it's been 2 years and no, hate... so FUCK YOU. There, everything is right in the world again... Oh wait... the world is still on fire. Fuck...
@@Darkwolfpocco I love you
I do reckon part of the reason Silent Hill can be a good horror is that, in supplying you with weapons, it makes you, the player, expectant of having to actually face the nightmare creatures, and what they represent...
Glad you like The Evil Within so much! Everything about it is so fun, freaky, and interesting. It does have some tedious and frustrating parts, but I’ve always found it great. The sequel is even better!
i love how after this the genra made a comback
I loved this game, it is one of the best horror games. I cannot wait for The Evil Within 2. I've been avoiding all the gameplay so i go in as blind as possible.
I agree 100% one of the best, and my curiosity and extreme urge to completely scour the internet for any and all tidbits definitely has spoiled it a little for me. That being said the recent video by downward thrust was some serious spoiler material in my opinion and immediately cut the video short before getting too far...the game just needs to hurry and release lol
11:26 Ah yes, Pyramid Head's brother, Safe Head/ Square Head
This game was MUCH better than the second game. Especially in terms for story.
Objectively wrong TEW has a awful story
@@mayonnaise3959
No it doesn't.
I don’t agree the gameplay yes but the story no
@@TinkerGrape TEW2 story was literal trash compared to the first game.
7:34 So the crafting is made simpler and less annoying by just having a generic “crafting material” rather than specific required components? That’s so much better! The only real annoyance with crafting is the need to search for the necessary materials.
Ey! Your shirt is broken o3o
The collar came undone months back but my yanking on it prolly didn't help lol
Nitro Rad Another great video as always man! Keep it up :)
Love your content man keeps getting better. Subbed since 4k and its amazing to see how far you've come
On my PC the frame rate was constant 60 for me after latest patches (on release it was awful). No issues with textures either, but that is a common problem with the engine they were using. I think Evil Within 2 changed engines so both issues should be fixed (I hope).
I know this comment is old but, if I remember correctly, the second one looked amazing. I played it on the Xbox one S by the way.
Persons I didn't like a lot design choices with The Evil Within and how it was paced but it's cool to hear how positive Nitro is with that game. Survival horror is just an astounding genre
Anybody else here kill the Keeper so many times during chapter 7 that he stops spawning??????
I'd personally love the low sprint time. Ever try to sprint in a nightmare? Yeah.
Very underrated game. I enjoy it more than Resident Evil 4 and The Last of Us.
I love the last of us, i havent played re4 in years so i cant remember much about it and yes the evil within underrated i love the game.
that's because you have no taste in games. this game is piece of shit but sequel is good
@@easthastings6919 Sequel is a downgrade dude, just because it has an open world and shinier graphics doesn't mean it's better.
@@ML-tr1hz No but it is better.
@@ML-tr1hz I like both games but the 2nd game is basically the first one but better in every way. Especially the gameplay and story.
I think it's nice that you used the E.Gad Luigi's mansion theme when describing the upgrade system
Anybody know the name of the song at 23:36?
I just want to say that you are the ultimate under rated UA-camr. You bring me quality content that I look forward every year
Very important question:
Was your shirt ripped the whole time?
I only noticed at 15:59
It was
15:56 Nitro Rad has a mini Phoenix Wright breakdown
people didn't like evil within????.............Man, are humans bogus as hell.
It didn't really help that the game didn't work when it first came out
I loved both of them. Great games.
It’s great. It just runs like the premium version of google slides.
Sorry
People who liked this barely playable mess, that's who I'm afraid of
I’m so addicted to your horror reviews dude .
You finished Akumu!? Props to you, pal!
the killer 7 ost as background music is a perfect fit
"You're no _match_ for me!"
Lol
Also, great review sir. Looking forward to see more content like this!
Holy shit, I've beat this game three times and I never, ever knew about that shoot the kneecap match trick. I always went for head shots to save ammo but this looks like a way better method. Getting so much out of your videos - feeling like I can finally tackle this at a higher difficulty now.
This review reminds me that you haven’t reviewed a single Resident Evil game. Saving that for a Halloween special this year or something?
Love this game, it was better than the sequel.
Wrong.
@@mayonnaise3959 You are wrong:)
@@mayonnaise3959💯
People need remember what survival horror was originally and use that tense decision making (AND NOT IN FUCKING QUICK TIME EVENTS) in if you need to melee, shoot or run.
How in the fuck is this not scary, I had to pause when encountering Laura for the first time.
I agree I just think people rather not admit when something scares them. On that point though I can't say I was "scared" but when Laura chased me and all those near misses where she'd almost catch me it definitely got my heart racing, and blood pumping
Hands down the most tense gameplay I’ve ever experienced never have I been so fucking jumpy
Bruh, same.
That Joseph's quote burned into my mind. Every time I'm in high place and look down to crowded street, his voice echoes.
Even thought this is a
Halloween special it feels like Christmas when you upload...
The scariest thing in this video is that your shirt has separated from the collar and when you're talking it moves and opens up like a second mouth.
Nitro rad is the kind of guy that uploads his Halloween special in early September
Xmas starts on October 31, so they moved Halloween to September :p
The Evil Within 1 ran on Id Tech 5, a game engine (like Id Tech 6) that was notorious for texture pop-in.
Some people celebrate Christmas a month early, but only the top percentage of humans celebrate Halloween, the best holiday, a month early.
Wait. It's not October.
You know what they say, October starts in September.
...."Mobius"!? (Makes happy Archie Sonic comic noises)
Puttin' enemies to the inferno to get that limeade
Evil Within has a great mechanic that is the match burning which was a unique way to kill enemy's which would of been scary if the enemies only died by fire.
Haha! How about that? The "Survival Horror" genre is "slowly dying."
@@GreenEyedDazzler yo'ure
Fuck no
It's my favorite genre but I don't think it even exists anymore. Even the remakes of re2 and re3 are pretty much action games now. They are great games but they just aren't "survival horror" anymore.
The joke is that Survival Horror games are games about slowly dying, y'all.
Just say it's texas and it works
Would've liked a Spain setting than Generic City in Dipshit Nowhere USA. Although Krimson is a good city name. So pass on name department.
The game will run like garbage if you have a monitor with 100 or Hz of refresh rate. I have a 144 Hz monitor ans I have to enable 60 Hz mode to play this poor excuse for a game
@@yunix2396 damn i hate how many developers just use usa for their settings
We have a lot of countries with different building styles culture and fauna but i guess people love seeing the usa for the 1000 time
Hell the usa itself has some interesting places but people always go to the generic us city style
how do you not get the story complaints ?
Speaking of survival horror, I was wondering if you're going to check out "Agony" when it comes out. It's supposed to be a survival horror about escaping Hell. If you haven't heard of it, I'd suggest looking at the trailers.
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I, have to find~
i bought the game yesterday for my ps3 , after i finished metro last ight im gonna play that one.. i recently re discoverd gaming after 13 years . so i play ps3 ( never played ps3 before 6 months ago ) and love those survival / action / horror genre.. i own uncharted 1,2,3 , last of us , tomb raiders , metro last light , resident evil 5, and this 1 . so if anybody knows more titles like that for the ps3 im happy to hear them. all the best from the netherlands
I'm glad I'm not the only one that really enjoyed this game. It really felt like a return to home like how it felt playing re4. Great review dude!
Wish that I'd known about the upgraded harpoon bolt. That would have been helpful. Oh, well. On to Evil Within 2!
"Light them up"

I love this game.
How can you like trash?
Ironic coming from someone with an anime profile pic
I fully, %100 endorse starting Halloween in September. I didn’t realize people didn’t like The Evil Within very much. That’s too bad, I thought it was a very creative game.
I always thought that the sprint is so limited in the beginning to force the player to fight and not run away
YEAH! NEW HALLOWEEN SPECIAL! GIVE ME MORE HORROR!
Maybe the reason Seb can't sprint for very long is because his ankle gets wrecked by a chainsaw early in the game. Best excuse I can think of.
You can turn the black bar aspect ratio off and just play normally but it's better with it on
I disagree
That's ok
They could've expanded this idea by let's say; You can use guns because that's Seb's contribution to STEM then the puzzles are that glass dude's contribution and so on...
