Making a New Wobbler Crankbait, Experimental Lure
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 жов 2024
- Making new lures always comes down to doing some experimentation. This lure is made from one piece of wood, including the dive lip. In this video I show you how I make the lure, how I tune the lure, and then I trouble shoot some very weird lure action.

“Oh my God it fixed it!”.....this is exactly what makes this channel so good!....an honest open discovery of both, what your past experiences and knowledge can teach us, and what you discover along the way!...perfect!
Wow, thank you!
Real inovative way to get a diving lure to wobble. Really like the way you give CLEAR understanding of what you are doing. Hemi Fox NEW ZEALAND.
Thanks cheers
I think I've taken more notes watching your videos than I ever did when I was in school LOL. Need that lure making class as an elective.
Well I hope you get to use your notes, thank you and cheers.
Very cool! At first, I was wondering if the buoyancy of the lip itself was contributing to the porposing, it is cool that you were able to fix it!
Was thinking the same thing. The buoyancy of the bib fighting the diving action.
This looks like the old Rush Tango lure from the early 1900's. I made several similar to this about 20 years ago inspired by the PK Lippy and Floyd Roman Nike. They swim a bit differently however. Nice job and interesting build as always.
Thank you.
I like the look and the action! Nicely done!
Its all about symmetry… totally agree!
The yellow spots on the older lure could be the interaction of the agent used to close the holes from the weights.
Thanks for sharing the process in your adorable mancave..
Could be...
Beautiful workpiece fishing 🎣 bait
Thanks 👍
Kick ass lure
My guess, just a guess, is that may be some sort of oil bleeding from the lead itself. Or perhaps, and oily residue leaching from inside the wood. Other then that, the fish won’t care. Great looking bait
This explains a lot about my own ill-designed "porpoising" lures. Too much material under the diving plane prevents the wobble.
On your question to us ...Its a chemical reaction between the lead and the paint. Lead comes in all kinds of different components, some soft, some harder ,gases released. Did you use different lead or paint than before? Doesn't matter you still did a great job and that metal scale is interesting. Yet meticulous to apply. Great colors ! Your are an inventor extraordinaire... thanks
Thank you
Great build and explanation of the finer details involved. I loved how you trouble shot the action and worked with the eye placement and lip design. Makes me feel better about my plug issue trials. As for the paint turning yellow... Some sort of reaction between the filler used and clear coat maybe? I had it happen in the past when the putty I had used wasn't cured fully.
If you wanna laugh and be entertained watch marling baits,if you wanna learn something and watch a pro this is the guy, the Adam savage of bait makers
super ; now must be some fish there !
Nice lure well worth the wait thank you
Amazing as always 🍻🎣
Thanks 👍
Nice work. You really make me want build some lures bu, !my garage is jam packed with junk. If I build a pole barn! I'll tell my wife Franco made me do it.
damn it, now i have to get a lathe. great ideas as usual👍
Good night friend, you helped me to find a problem and a bait I do some happen the same problem!!! thanks
Good to hear
Good seeing ya every week brother. Videos looking great with pro lures!!
Thank you...did a little fishing trip to the gulf...I send some photos.
@@EngineeredAngler looking forward to seeing the pics and to gather for some fishing, brah.
You never cease to amaze me!
Thanks.
I like I will be trying something like this in the future
Nice design, great finish, looks beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!

Thank you
I cut one of those out on the shopsmith lathe this morning, made mine out of bass wood, about 3 inches long.just gotta cut off the lip and sand it down..
Camphor is a pretty strong wood. Lead or what your sealing with may be causing a chemical oxidation action. Nice lure, inspired me to bust out my mini lathe!
Yes, I've seen lead hole bleed thrus on alot of wood lures , especially sappy woods like pine
Thank you for that...camphor retains a lot of it's oils.
I love those underwater shots, how are you capturing them?
GoPro on a long stick and the lure towed along side the boat.
I've had the problem with the yellow thing when I used stainless steel wieghts. I don't know what it is but it happened on 2 lures I made. So I just use my leadpot. I use old tire wieght the I melt on a camp stove to melt the clips off and all the dirt and just skim off the top with a old spoon then pour the rest into the small muffin pan then you can add the to lead pot as you need them. That what I do never had a problem with them.
Good to know! These were lead weights so I'm still in the dark. Thanks for input.
When I have worked with oily woods in the past such as teak it seems that oil will leak through the paint, but on the bottom where the lead is nothing leaks at all because there isn't any wood there. I wonder if you had just gotten an oily piece of wood?
great lure.
i have a design that i made, and it does a slight tail-pump, mixed in with it's wobble action. i kinda like it though, and, it catches. mine though, i think is caused by it's heavier nose.
in regards to the polycrylic. have you ever found that paint might not adhere to it? i did a batch, where i dipped them in polycrylic, to smoothen their overall surface. painted them, as normal, then kbs clearcoat. one of them dropped on the floor, very minor fall, really. and off popped a little piece, clearcoat and all the underlying paint, right down to the smooth polycrylic surface. no others have ever done that, and have taken worse hits or falls. only thing that made sense to me, was the paint did not 'bite' to the poly.
never had an issue but worth thinking about
Cool vid 🤙 I made a platypus with the same action lol.. the yellow dots are probably just gas off from the wood, did you use CA and baking soda or epoxy for holes?
I used UV epoxy resin...never happened before or since. Thanks for the input.
I like it i think ill try to make one just like it
Bel lavoro! Non è facile bilanciarlo ...bel movimento e bella livrea.
Grazie sono contento che il video ti sia piaciuto
Ottimo Italiano!! Buon lavoro!
I wonder could it be moisture turning your clear coat yellow, I've had something similar where I suspect my paint wasn't fully cured and turned the pearl white a yellow colour?
Okay, I have the same issue with porposing with the last two lures I made. One is a long billed walleye style lure the other is a copy of a 4 inch Flicker Shad. I have run into this issue before and don't know what to make of it. These are just Lexan lips so there is no issue with bulk under the lip. I have made similar type lures before without this issue. I wish I understood phenomenon better so I can learn to avoid it. Any other thoughts? Thanks. I also tried different lure tie positions - closer to the head and further down the lip - all to no avail.
I was going to suggest you move the tie eye closer to the head. Typically with a flat bib if you put the tie eye to low, past the center of fluid drag, the action can be anything from out of control to bobbing. keep experimenting...good luck.
@@EngineeredAngler Managed to salvage a couple of lures through experimentation. One was insufficient ballast and the other was the eye position. Still, I wish I understood the physics better. appreciate your channel. Thanks for the useful information.
@@EngineeredAngler I tried to mke a duplicate of the old St. Croix Snipe. Can't make it swim. Maybe you could give it a shot.
Hmmmm...maybe the porpoise effect might be productive???!!!
I was very temped to leave the porpoising alone...thinking the same thing. But it was more important to me to figure out, why?
I understand the curiosity...but I think it would be worthwhile making another lure that replicates the current lure but without the bill modification...seems like it would be a winner fish catcher !!!
Hi i made a lure similar but it turns over when pulled in fast. Your thoughts plz. Legend.
Your tow eye is probably misaligned. with this kind of lure most problems are with the tow eye.
What type of wood is that?
Camphor
@@EngineeredAngler Thanks. Do you think pine would work for turning fishing lures?
Would you duplicate a lure by another builde?
Duplicate? No. But I will use their design as a starting point for a different design.
@@EngineeredAngler Well, nothing is a duplicate in this game. I'm just saying, Can you make a squarebill that has a wide wobble? Or something like that, but better like it would swim wider? I'm not even talking company builders, just people without patents.
Where did you buy the scale?

Hi
It bothers me so much you don't recess your eyes.
