- When you make your own fishing lures you often get requests from friends. In this video I make a fishing lure that a good friend thinks will be a killer for redfish in the shallow flats. I make a wake bait and paint it with Spaz Stix to get a bright golden shine.

The spray silver plating you used in a previous video looked amazing. A few years ago there were two McClarin F-1 cars that were done using the spray silver plating method for several years.
I know...I've seen a couple of sports cars done this way...I looks incredible but I'm not sure I would want to be driving a mirror.☺

Just wanted to add- it’s really helpful to see the physics and mechanics behind the lure designs. It makes a huge difference trying to make my own. I’m not just blindly copying a visual design; I can edit and troubleshoot to make the lure work with the inevitable variability in the build.

I want a BIG flat sided wake bait for surf casting, and throwing to northern pike in my lake, something around 6-7" and maybe 2 1/2-3oz. Something I can work a little faster than the metal lip swimmers most surf guys use. I can't find one anywhere, and while I don't have your skills or tools, I may attempt one this winter. I will use this video to follow along, so Thanks!

There are lots of videos of people using wake baits for redfish on UA-cam. The Strike King KVD model is popular along with similar ones. So I think it's a good idea to make your own. I'd like to see a jointed version. Did that one ever catch redfish?
Yes.. it's caught its share if reds. They don't always go for wake baits though.

Franco, another great video. I have done the same set up for a rattle on one of my lures. They do help to make it loud. I am actually using the technique you did to make to original lure for my own, I am planning on pouring the two halves independently to make the lure so that I do not have to drill through the entire body. Would that be easier than doing a one piece poor. Looking forward to your response. Ted

No good reason...but I do try to use hand tools where it's reasonable ...not everyone has power tools.

I would like to ask you what I have to do if I want to sink it just a little more while retrieved. If I put the lip on smaller angle , for example 75 degrees, will be ok ?
Yes that will work...you can also move the tie eye up away from the bib a tiny bit.

Great video I had a question. Im airbrushing foam bobbers for salt water use and I want to make a hard shell clear coat. What would you recommend? I would like to air brush the clear coat on also thanks
You can use UV epoxy resin and set them in the sun if you don't have UV lights. Just thin the resin with denatured alcohol. You can also try clear lacquer in a can.

No...camphor trees are an invasive species from China...camphor is the only name I know.
I like the technique. The rattle was extremely aggressive.
Like the lure but expected it to sink more then it did due t I the (almost) 90° bib and the position of the tie eye?
Nope full on wake maker.
Most of the cuts you make on your bandsaw are not straight. That said why not get a new blade that's smaller.. maybe even 1/8". It will run right around those curves without releifs
I agree 1/8 inch would be way better for this stuff. The truth is I use the bandsaw way more for other things that require clean straight cuts. But that said, I have already dulled the blade and it won't cut straight anyway.

You're the bait building channel that does the math. Otherwise it's an "it worked pretty good like this last time let's see if it will work again" sort of thing. Sometimes the how and why behind it is good to keep in mind even if we always don't do the math. It gives us pause to consider things and making it not so fl'y by the seat of your pants'. Thnx.
And that's exactly how I feel about it.. I don't always do the math either.

I have "made" three lures so far and none of them have eyes because I have never purchased any. How important do you think having eyes on a lure are?
I think that eyes are very important. Predators key in on the eyes. It lets them know where to attack. That is why many smaller fish have a spot (false eye) near the tail. You can just paint them in...
