Awesome! I've been a fly fisher for over 55 years, and have tied my own flies since the late 70's. Trust me... I'm not old LOL. Your channel is one of the few bait builders I've subscribed to. My intent is to use materials like balsa and foams to make crank style baits I can use with a fly rod. Ummm... no, I'm not using treble hooks; most likely a single hook on the tail. Great channel, glad I stumbled upon it.
@@benjieaston2447 Right now I'm focused on making these videos and so I don't currently sell lures. I will let you know if that changes. Thanks for your interest!

awesome little trout lures. i made a batch years ago i might have to go get some balsa and make another batch. Ur videos are very inspiring keep up the great work
Agreed! I caught an 18"ish rainbow on one of these over the summer. Got it on another video 'Testing Handmade Crankbaits on Trout' if you haven't seen it. Thanks for watching!
There sure are a lot out there, but right now I like True Coat the most. I have links to most of the products I use on my website: www.zimmtexlures.com/productlinks

Just found your channel. Amazing work! My favorite balsa bait for trout is the 3 1/2" rapala original floater. The biggest problem I found with them is they only have 2 hooks (wish they had 3). Do you ever make lures to sell?
Welcome to the channel! Maybe you should make your own lure; its pretty satisfying catching a fish on a lure you made. I currently have my hands full with work and this channel, so I don't produce lures for sale at this time. I appreciate your interest!
I have found that useing a paper finger nail file that you can buy at big box stores like 12 for about $1.50 they are the perfect size for thrue wire rigs. The best thing on balsa they last forever.
Great question; you can use any kind of wood you want. Different species have qualities that are better suited for particular lures. Balsa is commonly used because it is easy to carve and very buoyant. I mostly use poplar because it is durable, easy to carve, reasonably buoyant and readily available. A good all around wood to start with might be basswood. Thanks for watching!
I am definitely wanting to get a test pool so that I can do that. Great suggestion! Check out my newest video; I was able to test these small crankbaits in a clear water lake.
Well, I actually don't sell lures right now. I'm just concentrating on building this channel, but I will let you know if that changes. Thank your for your interest!
@@loralmaracle9001 Yes; in fact I can feel a difference between two identical lures I made. With handmade lures, each one is a little bit unique. I fish with lures I made as well as lures I bought. Both work, but I get more satisfaction catching fish with my lures.
Just wondering what the Name of the Pliers you used to bend the wire with are call and where can I buy a pair... love you video thank you for taking the time to put it all together for us to watch. Regards Rod
Baking soda is used as a filler. When you put cyanoarcylate (superglue) on it and let it harden, you can sand and shape it. Unlike putty, it is much harder and more waterproof.
Since I've never made these before, I wasn't sure how much lead I would need so I finished up the body first. Next time I make some more of these I will have a better idea of weight needed and can put the weight in with the wire. Thanks for watching!
This is a very good question and I will try to go a little bit more in depth on future videos. In a nutshell, a lip is just a control surface that water flows over. When water spills over the sides, the size and shape of the lip affects the lure in different ways. A wide lip has a wide wobble because as water spills off of one side, it has a farther distance to travel to spill off the other side. Length generally controls the depth of the dive, but the longer the lip, the more horizontal the angle needs to be to maintain stability.
Greetings from Brazil! Just found your channel, loved the video, awesome attention to details and just subbed as well You said it's boring to see clear coating but I'm really not familiar with mid coats like you do! Which kind of clear do you use?
Thanks for subscribing, I'm glad you like my content! Right now I'm using East Coast Resin for my clearcoats because it has a longer working time and seems to have fewer air bubbles than others I have tried.
@@zimmtex even though it's a bi component resin you are able to apply such thin layers? Very impressive! If I don't apply a generous layer I end up with spots where the resin just failed to cover
Sorry for multiple comments (although it's more exposure to your vid by YT standards) but I'm commenting as I'm watching. Same story with the waight hole, make it on the square body - even before the wire slot - and after you place the hardware you just drop there small led shot
Sorry, that was before I really started doing that. But I did a follow up video where I took those to Colorado and fished with them a little bit. Check out 'Fishing with Handmade Lures'.
