Many generations of dominance the 2 door M car has had, and though it had some minor bumps along the way, BMW M have shown a consistent approach to the formula that makes the M3 and M4, particularly the 2 door: bringing their best motorsport learning and shoehorning it into their best road car. Despite the inconsistency of the design of our new car, the approach under the skin is still the same. But it comes in a generation where engine emotion is neutered by emission laws, M Lites like the M440i have almost 400 BHP, gorgeous things like the M8 exists, and the M2 rules supreme as the true successor to the M3 of old.
So where does that leave our new M4? Today we’ll recap some of the lead up to this car, see what makes it unique under the skin VS the M440i, then do a full drive review of the new BMW M4!
It’s a bit confusing talking about the history of the M4, is it’s only been called that for 1 generation. Truth is, the start of this car was 35 years ago with the BMW 3.0 CSL. The batmobile as it was known was an extremely successful race car that put BMW’s Motorsport division on the map, even with the origin of the famous three colour livery. It began the M story - a lighter, more driver focused, stripped out car. The clear predecessor to our new M4 today. Even with the grille.
But we aren’t focusing on the Grille history, more the general aggression of the two door M car, from E30 to now!
We will also take a look at everything under the skin, like the 3-litre straight-six - S58 engine. The twin turbo part 3d printed engine revs higher to 7250 RPM and produces 510 BHP, 650 NM, and 0 to 60 of 3.9 seconds.
ZF 8 speed Gearbox replaces the dual clutch, but the software is from scratch Vs M5/M8. Now shifts in 150ms vs those.
M Xdrive with 3 traction modes including RWD only, announced for summer 2021. This will of course have different performance figures and capability!
But competition within BMW is tough, with the brilliant M2 competition, M8 series and the M440i M lite: does this car do enough? Today we explore:

I bought your knob knicker. I hope you get your GT Black. Side note: I drove the M440i and M4 Comp back to back. They are equally quick with little difference from a dig to 80MPH. After that, the FAST comes in and the M4 just dusts it. As expected.

I don’t have a problem with the grille. It gives it an aggressive look. I think it takes time for people to become accustomed to a new bold design change. Similar to when Lexus came out with the large grille. The problem I have is the inconsistency among the other BMW models. A more consistent theme would IMO enhance the cohesive brand image.

I literally just put an order in for one of these. I dont love the grille, but almost every other angle looks fantastic in the flesh. The fact its a sensational drive made it the obvious choice.

I love that aggressive and frightenly brutal front end and it looks better than the alt versions you popped up, which was seamlessly done, and oh, I want one!

Excellent review and masterful editing. The car looks gorgeous in the rolling shots. I completely agree with you about the drive; I'm loving mine. I have a manual transmission base car, so not as fast, but still has every bit of those excellent driving dynamics. So good, it made my M2 Competition feel redundant.
For some reason I have no issues at all watching the paid promotions on this channel. Hell I’ve even bought the damn shaver and used the code. Channels been in my top 3 fav to watch for about 4 years now, love to see the growth 💪🏾

I had a 428 and then a 430 before buying my g82 (I know strange to go from the base model to the m4c but it’s always been my dream car)
The face was a shcok but in person I fell in love with it as much as I did the f82
I finished my break-in and gunned the throttle today, the performance is ludicrous...nothing short of it. The exhaust is eh

It would hardly look any different from the old M3’s. The new grille is sick and makes it look unique, bold and revolutionary not to mention super aggressive. A timeless design that will never get old. 20 years from now ppl will be losing their minds trying to get their hands on one. A future collectible for sure
@@moa-wg3bo All this hate means only one thing: greatness, which BMW has achieved with this model. The world is full of sheep like you. People that resist change and never really get out of the box society has placed their mindsets in. Plenty of people love it and I’ve been noticing a trend on Instagram and other social media platforms that the once haters are beginning to really like the big grilles. Any picture on Instagram of a BMW M4 even from random fan pages get a couple of thousand likes minimum. What BMW has done is nothing short of genius. It makes its competitors out there look outdated the new C63S ain’t even out yet, yet it looks outdated compared to this. This car will be in the history books it’s an absolute monster. Come back to me at the end of the year with sales figures I guarantee this and the M3 will outsell any car in their league

I purchased one in very similar spec and I am in total agreement with your review. There is an intangible with this car in addition to it's rigidity which was immediately apparent to me.

The new M3 and M4 are fantastic, but I’d still look for a new C63s while they’re available. Sure it’s slower, but my goodness the V8 and look is just better to me.
I personally think the grille looks ace, in fact it’s only spoilt by having a number plate across it.
@remove before race the car does pop quite a bit but you have to change the drive logic (on the shifter) to the third setting (three full arrows) the valve isnt actually fully open when you engage the exhaust button it’s kinda ridiculous
You need literally every setting maxed out for it to be at its most open setting

A little correction: the 3.0 CSL was the predecessor to the 6 and 8 series, the original M3 predecessor was actually the 2002 turbo.
But of course, in terms of size, you definitely can compare it to the new M4, although the whole 3 series derived from BMWs 4-cylinder range, whereas the CSL was from the luxury segment 6-cylinder models - it was something like a 7 series coupé in size and format

If you start the car in Sport Plus engine mode with the exhaust on you will get pops and bangs if you rev the engine but only when the car is in its warm up rev phase. Bit like the Mercedes emotional start

I'm personally not feeling the look of the M4, but even more the exhaust/engine sounds mediocre. Even my stock G37 sounds better IMHO, which is really sad.

C63 is the german muscle car. Still great car the m4, dont like the looks personally but maybe that will grow over the years.

At 7:08 you say the car is no wider then a m440i, this is simply not true. If you compare the g22 to the g82 from the rear side by side, you clearly see the g82 is much wider. Anyways, great video as always! 😁
As long as it’s in a dark Color and with number plate the grill is ok.
When are they going to get rid of the plastic bmw symbol on the steering wheel. A silver/steel milled detailed symbol would totally change the vibe of the whole interior IMO for such a minor easy piece to upgrade. Look at the Porsche crest on the newer models it is beautiful.

In my mind, the most beautiful modern bmw is the m4 cs followed by the m2 cs followed by the m8 and then the m4. And i like the m4 in general. Certainly i think the interior and the driving is better than the previous m4 specially with now the option of xdrive. And the m4 was always my fav bmw cause its small enough to be nimble and fun but big enough to be confy and practical. The m2 will always be the purer and moat fun for sure. Despite the face i d still buy the new m4 right away. The issue that i have with the design is not the face. Its the lack of the strong lines on the side and the lack of Hoffmeister kink. This is my biggest criticism of the car and it is because of these that the face kind of annoys me.

Anyone still complaining about the grille needs to grow up 😂 I know I didn’t like it at first but because I’m loyal to that round badge, I looked at it with an open mind, from BMW’s perspective, then I really liked it 👌 Anyway, those against the grille have had 7 months to get use to it, so they’re starting to seem pretty opinionated 🤷♂️
Need to grow up is not right way to put it ! If you spend hundreds of thousands why buy something you don’t like and “get used to it “. Most people who dislike this nee design only follow their hearts ! If you feel it is ugly , then it is .

Why bicker about it for several months as if you’ll get it to change? 😂 Why watch all these videos on the new G8Xs, commenting that you don’t like this or that when nobody has forced you to watch them? That is childish behaviour... Nobody is forcing anyone to buy the G8X and I’m pretty sure that nobody buys cars they don’t like, so if you’re not willing to look at the car with an open mind then go elsewhere, maybe Merc or Audi or wherever else that you don’t have to whine about something for months. Real BMW supporters either liked the G8Xs from the get-go or gave it a second chance. From what I’ve seen, those that gave it a second chance are mostly long-time BMW supporters and just needed a little bit of time to see the full picture.
I trust BMW so even if they come out with a “6 grilles design”, there would be a reason behind it, something that they saw that nobody else has yet 🤷♂️ so I’d definitely give them the chance that they deserve.
I’m not a mindless BMW supporter but I’m definitely not unreasonable. For example, I don’t like the new 1 series or the 2 series GC (and believe me when I say I’ve tried), hence why I don’t watch videos on them commenting “I hate this” or bla bla bla. Just quietly scratch it off your list 🙌

i simply called out the fact the front end looks bad and IMO a design failure. why would anyone just want to "get used to it"?
i do however, think that BMW has let down some of the BMW fans with this design. the kidney grilles were always the signiture and legacy of BMW.
i do feel that the legacy is kind of destroyed.
i would be feeling embarrassed to be sitting in one, when others look at the cars, i am unsure whether they are admiring the look of the car or they are just checking out how bad the front end looks.
