This is the most famous cabbage recipe in china. Baocai (包菜) is cabbage, Shousi (手撕) means torn by hand. This is literally just stir fry cabbage but it is so basic and popular that if you ask any Chinese, they will know about this dish, period.
🥢PRINTABLE RECIPE - soupeduprecipes.com/stir-fry-...
INGREDIENTS
- 1.4 lb (640 grams) of cabbage, torn by hand
- 1.5 tbsp of Chinese black vinegar (Amazon Link - geni.us/LbEO)
- 8-10 pieces of dry chilies, seeded and cut in half (Amazon Link - geni.us/coMV)
- 4 cloves of garlic, sliced thinly
- 1 tsp of salt or to taste
- 2 tsp of soy sauce (Amazon Link - geni.us/sTa6Ep)
- 2-3 tbsp of vegetable oil to stir fry
INSTRUCTIONS
Heat up your wok and add the vegetable oil. Toss in the cabbage along with the garlic and dried chilies. Stir over high heat for a few minutes to get some nice char. It will taste like roasted cabbage.
Add soy sauce, salt, and 1 tbsp of the Chinese black vinegar. Stir for a minute. Turn off the heat. Before serving, add the remaining black vinegar and mix thoroughly. This will stabilize the flavor Because the vinegar we add before evaporated a little bit during cooking. - Навчання та стиль
Your tone of voice, pace, and mannerisms make this so inspiring to watch! I'm trying to get motivated to cook and bake today.
Mandy, it doesn't really matter to me what you are featuring in your videos. I think that I can omit ingredients that I may not care for, but I absolutely love watching you prepare every dish you present🤗. You are just so comforting, and pleasing to watch🤗. Thank you Mandy!!!
Dear Mandy,
Thank you for this recipe. We love cabbage and discovered this lovely stir fry cabbage dish during a holiday trip to China. It was so delicious, we ordered it in every city, almost every meal. The one we ate in Chengdu was the best🥰. I wondered what made it taste so special, and now i know, thank you ❤️!
I love cabbage, it becomes sweeter when it's braised or boiled.
I would go to Chinese restaurants with my friends from Shanghai. They would order all sorts of stuff off-menu, but, by far, the best thing they ordered imo was stir fry cabbage. I would ask for them to order it every time.
I suggest you learn how to order it yourself to impress your friends
@@nataliet129 them ordering food was like a whirlwind. You don't order individually, you order all the food for the table at once and then each get a bowl of rice.
cabbage is delicious! We often had fried cabbage growing up. When we fry it with sausage, we call it bubble and squeak :)
leftover taters and brussels sprouts fried up till it gets a brown crust, that’s what we called bubble and squeak, with fried eggs flopped on top
@@CrimeVid yeah, i've seen a lot of versions. in the UK its generally roast beef leftovers, which involves potatoes. but fried cabbage and meat as far as I can tell is where the term originated. As a matter of fact, if you do fry just cabbage and sausage (I think originally it was beef or any type of minced meat), you get that distinct bubble and squeak sound. The dish was named for the sound it makes while making it. You will not get that with potatoes added. What you have is delicious, but if it doesn't make the sound while cooking, its not bubble and squeak.
You can make a vegetarian version with minced mushrooms standing in for the sausage, but these days plant-based sausages are so good I use them now. You just can’t cook the cabbage and potatoes in lard if you are serving vegetarians, which is unfortunate since it adds so much flavor and gives the vegetables nice crispy and brown edges.

One of my favorite things about China is walking into a 'buffet style' restraunt at about 11 oclock am.The windows are steamy, food is fresh, and you beat the lunch crowd. This dish is a must.

I love fried cabbage, haven't tried frying it this way, I lived in China for many years and cook it with chillis, sichuan pepper, garlic and pieces of flank pork on high heat, then add all the cabbage teared exactly the same way as you did, then after about a minute add oyster sauce and serve it in same texture as you did, also very nice, love it!

I love cabbage, too! I have only used standard American round cabbage, cut in wedges and steamed in about 2" of water (with a little nutmeg grated over the top) until tender when pierced with a knife. So sweet and nutty, just delicious. I'll try this way soon with your special Asian cabbage. Love your videos!
Looks so yummy!
I grew up with a fried cabbage dish, too, even though it was German, not Chinese. I understand the nostalgia❤
Cabbage well prepared is delicious. Your dish looks delicious.
My mom made cabbage when I was a child too. I love it and this looks delicious!

I did this last friday. My lovely missus & I loved it. I yielded to the temptation to add carrot shavings onion and sauteed mushrooms. I used a big Napa from our garden
We all have special foods that remind us of our families; thank you for sharing this special dish! As you said, it isn't so special because it's extravagant, exotic, or complex, but because to you, it's a bit of home you give yourself wherever you are.
Thank you, I’ll try it.
Thanks for another great video Mandy
This was my go to meal while living in China! Thanks for sharing

oh wow, this looks so good, I love cabbage. I grow a Savoy type in my garden, but I've used it all up, so excited to make this tonight with just the standard grocery cabbage! Also, I love all types of vinegars and black vinegar is my main go to for cooking but for salads, it's either champagne or Moscato wine vinegar. Thank you for your channel, it's my go to for authentic Chinese recipes!
Just start watching your channel like 5days ago. I like all your recipes. Love from malaysia ❤️
I love fried cabbage, with or without meat and/or potatoes, fried in bacon grease! So good! Sometimes I add sliced onion and make it all together to make a meal! 💕

I love cabbage from the time I was a child (my mom always gave me the raw "hearts" = stem). I look forward to giving this a try.

Cooking this soon! I love cabbage, and I've been looking for different ways to make it so my husband would like it.
Wow! What a surprise to see a new video from you today. The explanation and comparison between the two-body shape were enlightening for me, because I've seen the "flat" type cabbage in Chinatown before and thought they were "rejects" from the cabbage patch! LOL! Thanks again, Mandy for this Famous Cabbage Recipe.
Wow, looks yummy.
Merci pour les explications
It looks Delicious I have to try it.
Oh I need to try this! I am like this with taboulleh salad, it’s just a simple blend of stuff but man I could eat it for every meal if necessary. With the right components, a single vegetable can be a fantastic dish. This looks absolutely like one of them!

Definitely trying this recipe.
❤❣🙏❣❤
This sounds fantastic. Would Napa cabbage work well or nor the right consistency??
Stir fried cabbage is so easy, flavorful and pairs well with other vegetables or proteins. I love Napa with its more crinkled leaves with dried or fresh shrimp or occasionally will pair with smoked sausage pieces nor friend shrimp. I often have raw cabbage with heavier dishes since it serves as a sweet digestive and cleansing compliment. Cabbage and all its versatility for fine dishes is highly underrated in US.
This looks so damn tasty! Thank you!
used to love stir fried lettuce when I lived in Tianjin China. Soy sauce, Oyster sauce, ginger and garlic. this looks similar.
Love it! What protein source would you have with this?
I love flat cabbage, and all cabbage in general. But flat cabbage is sweeter and more delicate! I make stir fry cabbage all the time using shaoxing wine, ginger and garlic, and toban Djan. SO GOOOOOD!!!!

All right, that looks delicious-and straightforward enough that I might actually try it! Also, what is the burner you are using? I’ve been trying to choose a good one for wok cooking, since I only have electric burners. Thank you.
I always liked cabbage and I am enjoying my wok.
Thanks!
I can't emphasize enough how many delightful recipes I've made because of your videos! Thanks!
