Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. We are expressive by nature and are truly very quirky in every sense of the word. This is who we are and this is what we’ve got to offer. We understand it may not be for everyone, but here's to hoping you all enjoy and we absolutely love positive comments and feedback.
RE: LIVE VERSIONS vs STUDIO:

The reharmonization at the end is absolutely stunning. One of the best pieces of the PMG
Pat Metheny is so fantastic. His live album Travels is absolutely gorgeous.
Travels ✅
Yes, sem dúvida, Travels is absolutamente gorgeous. Muito bom demais!!! Amazing!!!
Paul Wertico on drums. Excellent drummer. Played on First Circle thru Quartet.
Why this transports me to another dimension, the AMAZING!! Pat Metheny and Group... Appreciate Pat's Compositions one of the kind!! a living legend , Lyle's Piano playing 2 Legends !! Music that out live many life tines!!
This song did not grab me on the first listen. But after listening a few times I fell in love with it. It is so powerful, and the level of musicianship is extraordinary. When I finally heard it played live at the Greek Theater in Berkeley It was incredible.
I was there with you!
Magical moment, magical times!
When Pat and solo their solo’s are so unique, that it’s hard to imagine anyone playing hipper solo’s … these two are truly once in a lifetime artists
I live just outside of Kansas City, MO, so Pat Metheny is old news around these parts - he's originally from Lee's Summit, MO, a suburb in the same metro area. I don't remember how many times I've seen him, but I know I've been a fan since 1978. If you EVER have a chance to go see him live, GO! Pat is a treasure and legend in his own time, he really is!
Experts at building atmosphere in a live setting.
You two tickle me and it’s a wonderful thing that you’ve discovered PMG. First time I ever heard him he played Joni Mitchell, another favorite, Amelia on Joni’s Shadow and Light tour in the late 70’s and have been hooked every since. Enjoy the Ride! It never gets old but I miss Lyly Mays like crazy!!
I have been a lifelong fan of Pat since discovering him in the early 90s as a budding guitarist. He's truly got a unique voice for phrasing and tone within jazz and just in general. If I had to rate a top 5 guitarists that have been most important in my life, he would certainly be in there in any possible combination.
This is one my favorite performances of his, too. Just incredible.
It deserves a listen, just for the name of the tune! Turn the lights off when you listen. You will go on a journey! Pat is remarkable - Lyle is the multiplier here.
Thanks a lot! The live album "The Road to you" is one of my all time favourites incl. The first circle and a lot of other great songs.
I had the honor of seeing Pat at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in 83, on a warm clear night with a full moon outdoors it was the most enjoyable night ever.
This album is like a book of stories. Half Life of Absolution and To the End of the World build to crescendos and you can’t help but laugh in amazement. ❤️
Another comment. You mention how versatile Pat is and he is not all “Jazz”…
First, he holds the record for Grammys won in different categories, at 10. Also, Charlie Haden (R.I.P), Pasts best friend, was quoted as saying that Pats music can best be categorized as “Contemporary Impressionistic Americana". I’d say that was a pretty good description.
Always loved this piece. You should check out the interview Rick Biatto did with Pat about a week ago. Pat is so articulate and informative.
Beato's best interview imo. And that's saying something. Knew it would be gold as soon as I saw he'd interviewed Metheney. PM is a genius. A label bandied around too often these days but definitely fitting for Metheney
Been listening to his music for about 20 years 25 years maybe a little bit more than that but something that he does and is his signature when he's live it's warm up so you got the A1 warm up of musicians making sure everything is a one the classic warm up sounds good they're great musicians we always have a gym when he comes to Detroit we value him so much we value the group so much we value any concert he brings to Detroit he treats us with so much respect and he feels like he's at home. I actually met him with my family it was so awesome yeah that's how lame I was awesome
Love ❤Your reactions … Great Music!
Guys…
Been meaning to write you forever. So glad you found Metheny. You have just nibbled a taste of what awaits you.
The Rick Interview was the best. If you have time, here’s an interview I did with Pat nearly 20 years ago:
ua-cam.com/video/czrHAyvdz5o/v-deo.html
Now on to the important stuff. These are MUST HEAR tracks:
You from Speaking of Now
Rise Up from Kin
Heat of the Day from
Imaginary Day
Third Wind from Road To You
Awakening from Imaginary Day (some of Lyles best work)
Now I know you love the epics… Yes, Genesis, Tull…
The epic of all epics is The Way Up From Pat.
64 minutes of the most thrilling ride you will ever go on. You will need a week to recover from. Many more titles to name, but this will get you started.
I’ve known Pat for 40 years. Recorded with Lyle and Steve Rodby. Perhaps next time I’ll turn you on to some songs I wrote for Jon Anderson.
Love your work… but the above titles need your attention.
Mark
Such an amazing soundscape. The only time I saw them was in the late '90's at an outdoor summer jazz fest in Toronto. What a beautiful summer day laying in the grass... 😎👍🍁🦋🌿
Nick and Lex, thank you for playing and sharing your reactions to this PMG song. To me, it is the first song where PMG and Pat show there Rock and Roll souls. Great Rock instrumental song. Sine you like this one, listen to “The Roots of Coincidence” on the album “Imaginary Day”. PMG won the Grammy Award for that song for “Best Rock Instrumental”. It is a great head banging Rock and Roll song! 😊
Oops. I just scrolled down and saw that you did review “The Roots of Coincidence”. I’ll listen and hear what you have to say.
I knew Nick especially was going to love this but I’m so glad Lex was on the same page too. If you guys want to see the group play this song here is the link ua-cam.com/video/6lU1uJ0eGGk/v-deo.html oh and even though First Circle was most definitely on my list someone else beat me to it as far as requesting it I can’t recall who it was now. 🙏🏽✌🏽❤️
The very pinnacle of composition fused with a level of skill in execution that inspires and bewilders as to how that level of talent can reside in a few people…and moreover…how did they come together to grace us with their presence.
I love this tune and album! This was the first album I ever got from PMG my friends mom was throwing out a bunch of cds and this was in there - blew my mind!
Always great to hear Lyle Mays amazing keyboard 🎹 work! ✌🏽
GOTTA GET YOU SOME AMERICAN GARAGE….PMG rock and roll
Being primarily a Metalhead, but like many types of music is why I like your channel. You bring such a variety of music, including this great piece of music. This had a wide variety within the song. The very begining reminded me of what you hear during a suspenseful horror movie.
Great reaction guys to another phenomenal PMG piece. I remember how brilliant this live album, and DVD (which was titled "More Travels" and was different to the CD in that it was live on set without audience) was when it was released in the early 90's, I couldn't stop playing them. This and the live version of First Circle totally blew me away. They were at the height of their powers, probably my favorite PMG line-up. Paul Wertico's subtle cymbal work and delicate touch on the kit is so memorable. Nick, I know you've heard the studio version and I know you don't like watching the video when you're trying to concentrate on the music but I recommend you make an exception and listen to the More Travels DVD version of "First Circle" by far my favorite version, the artistry in both audio and visual and the overall intensity is utterly breathtaking ua-cam.com/video/PVBoDx_1dTc/v-deo.html Best Wishes
If you ever saw the original official music video for PMG “Are you going with me?” you see the group playing in an empty room, and when Lyle plays a certain “distorted” chord on his keyboard, he is rotating some kind of dial on it that distorts the tone. It’s really cool! 🎶🎵
cymbals work in Pat music is always stratospheric, can't help listening to that only,sometimes.. love your channel
There actually isn't a studio recording of this track, or if there is it hasn't been released yet for some weird reason.
This piece was a combination of two separate pieces performed live on the 85 and 87 tours: the main melody was performed as a much shorter tune in 85 (as can be heard on a Japanese bootleg), and the ambient / atmospheric beginning was done in 87 (as I saw in Berkeley), much longer - maybe 7 minutes or so, including Pat triggering some phone ringing from his Synclavier.
Actually it’s funny because with this song there is no studio version only the live version.
The guitar/ horn sound comes from Pedro Aznar playing saxophone in unison with Pat.
I've been a fan of the PMG since 1980, and I hope you don't mind if I shed some light on a few things about this tune, which has been a favorite of mine since I first heard it 28 years ago. 1), Pat uses the Synclavier guitar to trigger the percussive sounds in the beginning. 2), Lyle uses the MIDI interface on his piano to play synth sounds in unison with the piano. 3), Pedro plays the tenor sax in unison with Pat's main melody lines.
There is also a video of (a different version of) this tune from the More Travels VHS(I don't think it's on DVD yet); ua-cam.com/video/6lU1uJ0eGGk/v-deo.html
When you watch the video, it may make more sense.
I have to say I agree… It’s one on my favorites, out of a couple dozen “favorite” Pat performances.
Once again - Love your reactions. 😁
Still love your reaction faces. Beautiful. So happy to see a new generation appreciate these tunes.
6:04 Your little dog likes the vibes! 🥰 There is an awesome live version , too! Saw them live in Germany, around 1985,they had special magic, playing over 2 hours with that Latin singers and percussionists, it was overwhelming! On my 18th birthday we did a group meditation listening to As falls Whichita.., all the people laying on the floor feeling connected ready for something else... I can't tell here, just beauty...
PAT M..ONE OF THE GREATEST BRINGERS OF JOY,HAPPINESS AND LOVE IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC..A TOP 6 GUITARIST FOR ME...KEEP EM' COMIN' MY ROCKY MOUNTAIN FRIENDS! ALL MY BEST...KENT. {THE OPENING MINUTES REMINDED ME OF WEATHER REPORT}
Numero Uno 👍🏽
Hey Kent thanks for the heads up on the release of Eberhard a truly wonderful song by the great Lyle Mays R.I.P. 🙏🏽❤️
Another great Metheny song. Like the nick and lex audio cassette tape poster on the wall. Cool.
One Of My Main Guitar Dudes ! You Bring It To The Masses ! It Is Really Special " World Music " as Nik Said !
God Love You Both !! 💞
Hi NicknLex. This song never gets old. 👍💗🔆🌺💗
I Love Pat but this was MY first time hearing this also! Superb
Before the bass kicked in, it sounded like a dungeon music from a video game! The whole song was good.
The people who saw the PMG in those days will never forget it! I’ve seen him twice, in ‘78, and 2018. Amazing artist. Mauricio is taking you, and us, on a wonderful journey through all the flavors of Pat! 😃
Yum Yum 😋
Powerful composition by Pat and Lyle! My personal favorite. It’s spiritual and conveys a deep introspective moment. I like how you compared it to “First Circle”. “Half Life…”is the yin to that song.
When I heard it the first time I felt like I was experiencing a spiritual meditation.💛🎶👏🏽Great review💯
Guys... from the very same album you need to do a reaction to first circle live version. Try to do the "easy" clapping intro and dive into how technical the universe of Metheny/Mays really is.
Ah....thé Root of coïncidence extraordinaire ...phhhhhhhhhhhhh...
"San Lorenzo" my favorite by the Pat Matheny Group! 🌻 just too good!
San Lorenzo ✅
Are we there yet? No?! That's okay, because this was GOLDEN! (Not the town...that would be weird.) Thanks Guys (including Mauricio)!
We are in different quadrants of the US, but I hope this causes you to seek out live Pat performances and I hope we meet at a performance someday - I will buy you a drink!
I've listened to this album a zillion times and love it. I unfortunately never got to hear the group perform this song live. Another album where Pat goes off in an experimental direction is Quartet. Check it out!
Quartet ✅
Me too. Fabulous live album. Wish it had been two cd set. Mays was a genius too.
Try "God Bless The Child" by Blood Sweat And Tears. I think Lex will love it. If not, try "Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day" by Jethro Tull. Their not just some little songs.
Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day ✅
That´s Pedro Aznar on saxophone doubling the melody.
It took me years to realize that what makes the guitar sound so special on this track that for quite a while it is shadowed by Pedro playing soprano saxophone.
BTW, Pat Metheny (in any form, group etc.) is fantastic for road trips! 🚗💨🎶🎵
So True 👍🏽
If you want to go down the mother of all rabbit holes you need to explore all the music on the ECM label. By the nineties when Metheny hit I had been listening to the music on this label for 20 years already. Pat Metheny came late to that label but they were launching careers as far back as 1970. Kieth Jarrett, Chick Corea, Gary Burton, are just a few of the greats who came into their own on ECM. Check out the entire catalog. If your dad lived in Germany in the 1970 to 1990 time period he probably knows about ECM since they were based in Germany (Munich I believe but don't quote me on that). This is music that demands your full attention. It sucks you in and doesn't let go of your ears and that's what I love about it.

Gracias y saludos
PMG is like a religion to me. Changed my life. Meaning, I can associate time periods/events of my life with their songs.
Met pat twice!
In oregon and in puerto rico.
Veeeeery polite and signed my stuff.
My favorite PMG song, and the best version is only on this live album.. this song takes You on a journey..
You guys could do NOTHING but review Pat’s music for the rest of your time here…and (1) Never get to an end, (2) Create a unique niche, and (3) Acquaint new listeners to what music can be when propagated by the genius of Pat Metheny. Oh…and RIP Lyle Mays.
really heavy music in the Pat Metheny Universe - but I like it
You still need to react to Chick Corea/Gary Burton “Senor Mouse or Crystal Silence or Falling Grace or Song to Gayle” from the album In Concert, Zurich October 1979, pure harmonics
Look at them---they're just lost in Metheney! Pretty good place to be.... PS was so happy for Rick Beato when he scored the interview with his heroine Joni Mitchell! Interviewing Pat was his logical next step!
Tell me about it.
@@mauriciodelarosa2449 the day they hit Truth Will Always Be ( which I'm guessing you've requested) will probably be my favorite reaction video ever...
@@alanparsonsfan Of course it is on my list although now that it’s going to be only one request per person monthly 😢 it won’t be tomorrow.
que bueno poder contar con subtitulos !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ESPECTACULAR!!!
Nice shout out to Rick Beato at the ending commentary. Noice!
hey guys I would like you guys react to the song "To the end of the world" there is a live version... it is so great! ohh.. it's PMG.
excelente !!!!! chicos.
There are basically four movements to this. And there's only this one version of it.
Excelente...!!! No conocía PM.
On one of the three occasions I'd been to a Metheny Group show, during a silence between songs, I heard a woman in the audience seated near me, apparently unfamiliar with Metheny, say, "Oh, I get it: this is like a movie soundtrack." Yes, a movie soundtrack for an imaginary movie in your mind.
I agree with TheColdrush22 regarding PMG's live album, TRAVELS. I've played that album hundreds of times I'm sure. You two should check out my favorite track, "Goodbye." As for "Half Life of Absolution," it's the stand-out track from THE ROAD TO YOU. Rest in Peace, Mr. Lyle Mays. Thanks again for your channel! #nicknlexrequest

I've scoured UA-cam to find a live performance video of this, can't find it. If anyone knows of one, please post a link. Amazing song, I am almost certain he is playing the Roland synth guitar "just" as a guitar.
Hi, dear friends. Absolution takes place in the confession. Confession may be a real tour de force, painful because of all the problems and weights we carry in our hearts. During the confession our wounds gradually get healed and without loosing our innate charakter we van spread our wings again.
As far as “style”, Pat has the record for number of Grammys won in different categories… Look it up.
Yes I believe it’s like 20 and counting! 👍🏽
In 10 categories!
I enjoy your reaction videos. But like most of PMG's songs, this was composed not by Pat Metheny, but by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays. Lyle wasn't just an amazing pianist and improviser, he was an incredible composer. He should receive equal billing.
100% agree. its should say under composer all people involved in writing the music.
Me gusta mucho su canal
Esse álbum realmente é muito bom
This another DVD you should watch …
Greatest live ensemble...
Hey guys!!!
If you want something amazing new stuff to react to, how about checking out Norway’s finest: LEPROUS?
Pretty sure you’ll love both the music and the vocals👍
This singer could be a younger, better version of Morten Harket from 80’s pop sensation A-HA (you know those Take On Me guys) and the musicianship of the band is top notch as well.
The albums Bilateral and Malina have insanely great songs and they have a wide variety of styles, so if you don’t find at least one track you absolutely love on those albums there’s something seriously wrong with you😀
Cheers from the middle of Norway, live long and prosper🖖
Please do a reaction to Are you going with me from His Offramp record :)
