I saw ROC twice in concert. It was a thrill. During those wildest parts I counted SEVEN people playing electric guitar including Lyle Mays! By the way this song won a Grammy for Rock Instrumental.
I saw the Metheny Group perform this entire album, start-to-finish with no interruptions (at the start, he said, "OK, I'll see you on the other side"), at the Universal Amphitheater in L.A. Then, at the conclusion of "Imaginary Day," Pat put his guitar down and gave his thoughts about each song, from the last to the first, in a continuous stream of thought. 'What a mind. And then, the show continued.
HARD TO BELIEVE HE IS 67..I HAVE LISTENED TO HIM FOR 45 YEARS AND HE NEVER HAS LOST HIS TOUCH..WHAT A GIANT HE IS..ALWAYS GREAT TO SEE YOU REACT TO HIM...ALL MY BEST...KENT.
im subscribed now...thank you. and please realize that the two of you wanting to say the exact thing the other has only proves the perfection of your relationship...the both of you are of like minds and are so much a great part of each other and that is why you say the same things. Keep it up. Excelente sin duda.
The first part of the piece seems to be mainly a Metheny composition and the second part (orchestral sounds primarily on the synth) seems to be Mays's writing. Initially the Jazz/rock versus the orchestral and ambient sounds may seem incongrous but it works really well. The whole album is beautifully produced so you can hear every nuance of the instruments comparing and contrasting. The "chorus" reminds me of Nirvana.
When I get mad and need a release, I put this song in my car, turn the volume up to 100 and scream to the top of my lungs on the "wildest parts" as was coined by Scooter. It works, try it sometime. I called this my screaming song.
This song is just AMAZING!!! I love both parts, the loud and the quiet one... Its just like yin yang, beauty and the beast that complements each other! A pure perfection! ❤❤❤❤
Memories that come to mind.is Pat Matheny in his Berklee days, when he was 19-20?, csitting in with the Gary Burton quartet. He would also play duets at coffee house venues with the Burtons main guitarist. Once the duet was playing in Somerville and the table I was at was knee jerk close to them. I've been a fan ever since. This CD I play all the time. Thank you for your review.
Pat Metheny "Are We There Yet" is another one of those, unless you heard it, you wouldn't ever in a million years hear something so abstract yet so beautiful.....!!! Peace
In the live performance the light blasts full spectrum onto Paul Wertigo’s drum kit when they bust into that hard jam. What a show. Its difficult to have a favorite PMG album, but this one is def one of my top five.
One of the most powerful pieces of music I have ever heard. The Grammy award for best rock instrumental was well deserved. I think Pat has won 20 Grammy awards in 10 different categories.
Pat won a Grammy for this one - in the Rock Instrumental category. Pat has the record for grammy awards in more categories than any other human being. I can never get enough Pat Metheny. I could listen 24 hours a day and I would want MORE and MORE.

I was hoping you'd get to this. The real secret sauce to this tune is Lyle Mays's orchestrations in the final half. Any time you hear anything that is unabashedly cinematic - that's Lyle. Pat is astounding, but his PMG work with Lyle is on another plane altogether. I've seen ROC live 8 times - 5 on the ID tour, two for SoN, and once on TWU. Each time was just pure thunder and beauty. Metheny is not afraid to really experiment and even alienate his audience in the process. Which shows he's making music for himself....whether anyone else likes it or not.....which is a musical artist in complete creative control of what they produce.
In a radio interview once, Metheny was asked how he compares his earliest music to his latest. After a somewhat long pause, he replied that he felt all his music is "really just one long song." I liked that.
Great reaction guys. I heard this live it’s a wal of sound that drops down so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Their dynamic range was unbelievable.

Had the pleasure of seeing this tour. It's the one where Pat played an acoustic guitar which had 20 strings or so displaced all over the guitar. This is also the only Metheny song where he played a guitar which sounded distorted and the speaker stack on the stage actually shook like a Van Halen gig. And please tell the dude who makes these requests to request Facing West for you won't understand the man that is Pat Metheny unless you delve into this song.
Fun part of this tour was the fact that pretty everone on stage at some point was playing guitar on this song except for the drummer :-)... Yes even Lyle Mays was playing guitar in the heavy section and was even standing up playing one.
It sounds like he combined many of his styles and moods into this piece. I have this album, somewhere in my disorganized CD collection. I remembered part of it, but, like many times before, you reintroduced me to many artists that I had forgotten, Muchas gracias.

have always thought PMG was the most accessible version of all his groups. You're getting closer to The Truth Will Always Be! :). Pat is not afriad to experiment. Hope you someday encounter his Pickcasso, a 42-string guitar. . BTW, the two of you are such a team! So much fun to watch you riff off of each other. Seems like Nick's strength/contribution is in getting and explainging the musical skill, techniqu and composition, and Lex's strengh/contribution is discussiong the context/feeling, what the piece is doing/saying. LIke Lex is trying to share what she thinks the musicians are trying to say, and Nick is telling you how he thinks the musicians are trying to say it. Good catch on the Hans Zimmer likeness. ZImmer has just finished the sountrack for the upcoming Denis Villeneuve Dune movie, he created 3 albums worth for it. Really going to be something
That is a remarkable tune! Great that you acknowledged how different this is. Pat said in the 1970's that he never wanted to get into the 'rut' of having to make new music that sounded like previous stuff. His scope of improvisation includes that he considers all of his (now huge) catalog of music to be one long "track" and the journey from the beginning is one soundtrack. He wants the "journey" to be as interesting and often surprising as possible. You should check out two versions of the same title, "Question and Answer". One from the Pat Metheny Trio studio record, and another from Trio -> Live. Both are great, the latter (especially how it ends) is amazing!! Yes, for Imaginary Day he came up with symbols as alphabet. The code of the symbols to letters was on the original CD. Guess he likes an audience with functional brain cells! Always great to watch your first impressions. Keep exploring!!
It’s too bad you don’t have the CD with its brilliant packaging - the disk in its tray actually serves as a circular codex for the icon language used in all parts of the release, when turned the right way to line up with colored squares in the packaging. Great stuff. 🤩
Yesterday I just bought a ticket to see him at The Theater at the Ace Hotel, Downtown LA on Oct 2nd Excited! (He'll be hitting Bolder/Steamboat Springs/Denver Oct 7, 8, 9th respectively! Get your tickets!!)
Con los años, ha tocado con artistas tan diversos como Antonio Carlos Jobim, Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Jim Hall, Michael Brecker, Milton Nascimento, Pedro Aznar, Toots Thielemans, Enrique Morente, David Bowie y Carlos Santana.
Sounds like Pat and Squarepusher had a baby. Very different and amazing sound from a musical chameleon and true genius. Still waiting on your Stanley Clark (bassist with RTF) "School Days" from 1977 listen/reaction. You will be astonished.
I'm telling you two, the lp As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls is THE best jazz/rock fusion ever recorded. And, pure beauty! This song is a pale reflection of that album IMO. Quote: "As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls is a collaborative album by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, released in 1981. The title makes reference to Wichita Kansas, and Wichita Falls, Texas. The title tune is just under 21 minutes." Saw Pat Metheny in solo performance at McCabes (in Sta Monica, Cali) back in the day, and he was truly amazing!
Hey Guys, great reaction, like you both loved the song the moment I heard it way back then, the preceding slow song "Across the Sky" which is utterly beautiful and haunting segway's into "Roots of Coincidence", what you missed was the build up before the synth bass intro. The album "Imaginary Day" is one of my favorites and was very innovative for the group, a lot of new musical and technical ideas, beautifully produced, other recommendations from the album are "Follow me" and "A story within the story", Best Wishes.
@@mikes8149 This is so true like the last song for example The Awakening takes us to Scotland with the wonderful bagpipes all the songs are great on this album!
Not Pat, but thanks as it's my day too... 65 and Metheny has never disappointed me in all those years. Wow.... The "heaviest" I have heard from him in a long time. Happy birthday to all us aging Leos.
I was wondering if and when you guys would listen to this track. I wanted to see your minds blown again by Pat Metheny and I was not disappointed. Thanks.
'oh my god I was just going to say that', you gotta let her win sometimes brother. Also, it's easy to recommend Pat Metheny songs, because he has so many great songs.
What a coincidence! At its roots, this song reminds me so much of Yes’s “And You and I” because, you know, they’re both by musicians, and the titles both have four words, well, almost. Yeah, you really need to do “And You and I” next. Because then you are one step closer to being able to listen to the entire Close to the Edge album in between Pat Methenay and Steely Dan. 😎
I'm hoping for some of his first big hits from the very first Pat Metheny Group album, which established their sound, with Lyle Mays being a big part of it. And then the "80/81" album, with 2 saxes.
@@mauriciodelarosa2449 I especially liked "Open" and "Pretty Scattered", which were on side 3 of the album, but for some reason didn't make it on the CD. They are on Spotify though. Also - if you Google "Pat Metheny : News : The Stories Behind 80/81 " there are interviews in podcast form there.
The amount of rich ideas strung together in this one song is equivalent to a double album by other mortal musicians. Best Insutrmental of the 1990s. prove me wrong
Great reaction to PMG! You should definitely check out "Follow Me" from this album!! It's definitely probably more in line with the traditional PMG you are accustomed to!!!
Que tema tan increíble! Por favor, por favor escuchen September 15th del PMG. Es una melodía dedicada al gran pianista de jazz, Bill Evans. El solo de piano de Lyle Mays es de otro mundo. Me encantan sus videos!
One of the best things by Metheny in recent times is the recording "Tap - Book of Angels No. 20" where he interprets compositions by John Zorn and makes use of all his musical colors... check it out, you won't regret it. Promise!
Sounds like a collage of soundtrack songs from a movie that I'd like to see that hasn't been made yet. A much shorter song that would also work in a movie nicely is Goldfrapp's song "Lovely Head" which I would highly recommend you do.
Thanks for bringing up Goldfrapp. Love most of their albums. Would be great to see them react to the beautiful/sensual "Hairy Trees" (though it's filled with sexual allusions).
Love the channel. Have you guys listened to any early Queen - the first album or Queen II? If not, give it a try, particularly Queen II. Queen at their proggiest and hard rockiest.
I'm getting a bit of a Kraftwerk vibe in parts, excellent and interesting music. Loving y'all's reactions, the attention to details, really trying to sort through the lryics, pointing out the drops & transitions, and your own interpretations of what the song conveyed to you. Might I suggest; "Cat Stevens" - a prolific singer/songwriter with a unique and iconic voice that touches the soul. His catalog of greatest is filled with many wonderful heart felt gems, I recommend 1st; Father & Son, about a conversation betwen a somber father and his teenage son that is full of anger wanting to break out on his own. Others to consider Hard Headed Women, Peace Train, Wild World, If You want to Sing Out, Moonshadow. You're sure loved him, I guarantee or your money back.
This is what happens when jazzmen get bored listening to this horde of rock /hard rock bands who play 98% of their career on 4 chords pro piece. And that reaction of them got an emmy for ... Rock instrumental. Their last reaction, was a reaction, "kind of a protest record. About how everything is getting shorter and shorter and smaller and smaller and less ambitious and less detailed and less nuanced, and how the world is just crumbing in its aesthetic ambitions". That reaction is named «The Way Up». The last album for the Pat Metheny Group.
This is a really great song from P. Metheny.. you can see him play this, here (with the late and regretted Lyle Mays !!) : ua-cam.com/video/if-1aFsV450/v-deo.html

It’s too bad you don’t have the CD with its brilliant packaging - the disk in its tray actually serves as a circular codex for the icon language used in all parts of the release, when turned the right way to line up with colored squares in the packaging.
Great stuff. 🤩
Listen to Pat & Lyle's score on the movie Fandango. You'll love it!
Clearly the finest guitarist in the world…and beyond.
Well, let’s put him in the same league as Al Di Meola and Steve Morse. Now THAT would be an amazing trio concert
WOW!!!
Bond. James Bond. Very nice selection, Mauricio. Great reaction. Happy Birthday, Pat 🥳🎂✨🤪
Con los años, ha tocado con artistas tan diversos como Antonio Carlos Jobim, Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Jim Hall, Michael Brecker, Milton Nascimento, Pedro Aznar, Toots Thielemans, Enrique Morente, David Bowie y Carlos Santana.
Huge PM fan, especially his work with Lyle Mays. Please experience Are You Going With Me. OMG you will love it.
✅
Sounds like Pat and Squarepusher had a baby. Very different and amazing sound from a musical chameleon and true genius. Still waiting on your Stanley Clark (bassist with RTF) "School Days" from 1977 listen/reaction. You will be astonished.
Lisa and Theme From Boyz N The Hood ✅✅ it’s Clarke with an e 🙏🏽✌🏽❤️
Life is just a game would be a perfect follow-up to this
I'm telling you two, the lp As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls is THE best jazz/rock fusion ever recorded.
The title tune is just under 21 minutes."
Saw Pat Metheny in solo performance at McCabes (in Sta Monica, Cali) back in the day, and he was truly amazing!
Across The Sky and A Story Within The Story ✅✅
@@mauriciodelarosa2449 Hey Mauricio, tks for the endorsement man, Metheny forever!!
@@gazza8127 Yes most definitely! 👍🏽
Love the musical journey Pat takes us on!!
ID was a very innovative set. Every track took the listener someplace different.
@@mikes8149 This is so true like the last song for example The Awakening takes us to Scotland with the wonderful bagpipes all the songs are great on this album!
This is one of my favorites. Probably heard this a thousand times. I also love "Follow Me" From the same album. Pat's amazingly creative.
Could have been offered up for the movie the Avengers of the 60s BBC TV Series that came out in 1997
Not Pat, but thanks as it's my day too... 65 and Metheny has never disappointed me in all those years.
Wow.... The "heaviest" I have heard from him in a long time.
Happy birthday to all us aging Leos.
Happy Belated Birthday David 🎂
I was wondering if and when you guys would listen to this track. I wanted to see your minds blown again by Pat Metheny and I was not disappointed. Thanks.
'oh my god I was just going to say that', you gotta let her win sometimes brother. Also, it's easy to recommend Pat Metheny songs, because he has so many great songs.
Wow!!!! Sounded so amazing!!! Like a raging battle at first! Then a full blown war!! The end sounded like peace began afterwards
¡Creo que esta pieza es el espacio más rockero de Pat! La vi en el festival de Montreal interpretando esta pieza y fue mágico. The best
A personal favorite.
Yes!
I'm hoping for some of his first big hits from the very first Pat Metheny Group album, which established their sound, with Lyle Mays being a big part of it. And then the "80/81" album, with 2 saxes.
80/81 with the late and great saxophonists Dewey Redman and Michael Brecker 👍🏽👍🏽
@@-R.Gray- There is not one bad track on that album and thanks for the info I will definitely check it out 👍🏽
You,re right - this is unique
The amount of rich ideas strung together in this one song is equivalent to a double album by other mortal musicians. Best Insutrmental of the 1990s. prove me wrong
She looks like she is trying to figure this song out and he looks like he's given up and is just enjoying it
I actually figured out the chords 😅
Great reaction to PMG! You should definitely check out "Follow Me" from this album!! It's definitely probably more in line with the traditional PMG you are accustomed to!!!
Que tema tan increíble! Por favor, por favor escuchen September 15th del PMG. Es una melodía dedicada al gran pianista de jazz, Bill Evans. El solo de piano de Lyle Mays es de otro mundo. Me encantan sus videos!
September 15th, Bill Evans and Lyle Mays ✅✅✅
One of the best things by Metheny in recent times is the recording "Tap - Book of Angels No. 20" where he interprets compositions by John Zorn and makes use of all his musical colors... check it out, you won't regret it. Promise!
Phanuel ✅
@@mauriciodelarosa2449 yes, this is a great one.
Es como escuchar el mecanismo de un reloj.
THE song from that album is...Follow Me.
Love their song "Drew!"
Love the channel. Have you guys listened to any early Queen - the first album or Queen II? If not, give it a try, particularly Queen II. Queen at their proggiest and hard rockiest.
Tiny inner, stubborn, disorders (roots) adiding to each other and culminating to bigger and often violent disorder (only apparently coincidence).
You should explore YES, in the presence. Heartfelt
Cat Stevens ✅
This is what happens when jazzmen get bored listening to this horde of rock /hard rock bands who play 98% of their career on 4 chords pro piece. And that reaction of them got an emmy for ... Rock instrumental.
Their last reaction, was a reaction, "kind of a protest record. About how everything is getting shorter and shorter and smaller and smaller and less ambitious and less detailed and less nuanced, and how the world is just crumbing in its aesthetic ambitions".
That reaction is named «The Way Up». The last album for the Pat Metheny Group.
ECSTACY?!? Well, then you need to react to ARE YOU GOING WITH ME?
If you ever start a band, "So Many Crickets" is an awesome band name.
Billy Cobham Stratus
This is a really great song from P. Metheny.. you can see him play this, here (with the late and regretted Lyle Mays !!) : ua-cam.com/video/if-1aFsV450/v-deo.html
Hey there NicknLex hope you're doing well I know I'm on the wrong reaction but I just saw your take a pebble reaction and I have to say Nick your face says volumes about your appreciation in music you almost cried dude LOL but truth be told that man is the best keyboardist I've ever heard or ever seen I literally saw him play a classical piece of music and without missing a note went from sitting at the his bench to Standing On Top of the piano and playing it backwards that is no s*** and it wasn't some simple piece of music either I can appreciate your appreciation of that last year just plain enjoyed this wonderful peace Nick you have to admit even you were impressed by his ability nobody else played that way enjoy watching you two please consider playing Eric Clapton the core or Joe Walsh and the James gang Stop.. or Queen Great king rat. No one has done these songs and they are all killer last but not least you should try out Wishbone Ash still playing music 50 years later discovered by Deep Purple twin guitar heaven originals along with the Allman Brothers try lifeline they're still touring thanks for the consideration guys love it yes again let me know if you need any jewelry
Hey if I get any say try hoedown by Emerson Lake and Palmer fun and upbeat or if you really want to go somewhere try pictures at an exhibition that's what I grew up on
My birthday too... ( mi cumpleanos tambien )
Happy birthday!!! Feliz cumpleaños!!! ❤️❤️
Feliz cumpleaños AJ 🎂
Dream theater - this dying soul could be a great reaction
If you don't listen to Last Train Home you don't really understand Pat Metheny.
Last Train Home ✅
True, but at the same time you could clearly state the same thing about dozens of his works of art and be spot on each and every time..
@@mauriciodelarosa2449 Do not forget "Facing West" and "Dream of the Return."
@@biskygiver Facing West ✅ Dream OF The Return✅
@@biskygiver You are right. Others such as Stranger in Town, It's For You, and Sueno Con Mexico are amazing. But to me, Last Train Home defines Pat Metheny.
Como suena esa viola che!!!
