Saw this tour in 1984 at Carnegie Mellon University. They didn't even have names for the track they just used numbers. The best show I ever saw and I've seen Rush 3 times. So glad you enjoyed it and much as I do. Bonus got Nick to cry. Thanks Nick N Lex. 😅

Saw them in Ann Arbor Michigan later in 1984. They were absolutely fantastic, and the crowd was really into it. My lasting memory of the evening was Lyle Mays acknowledging the ovation and mouthing "oh my god" over and over at the end of the show! Thanks and RIP, Lyle.

comparing RUSH and Pat is rather foolish.....I love Pat, saw him 4 times...it's always magical, yet the 78 John McLaughlin One Truth Band w/ Larry Coryell tour remains one of the very vest concerts I ever saw, but only because that's the day I decided to take guitar seriously...but i would never compare the two, I've seen way too many great shows to start trying to find the very best....sometimes they are all great

Here's my little story. I became aware of Pat and Lyle at a Joni Mitchell concert. Went out and bought Wichita Falls. Then they came to town at the Greek Theater in L.A. PMG had just released "First Circle." I thought it was an absolute masterpiece. I thought it represented the circle of life. I was determined to give it a standing ovation even if I was the only person to stand. It appeared as the 3rd song that night. I stood up at the conclusion, and so did EVERYONE ELSE. Just amazing. After that the next 3 or 4 times I saw the group, this played in the 3rd spot, and it always got a STANDING OVATION. Unheard of in the middle of a concert. Thank you Pat. Thank you Lyle.

I have seen the PMG 6(?) times (Los Angeles area) and "First Circle" got the standing O every time. For me, First Circle is a "perfect" piece of music. Even after hundreds of listenings, i can still become emotional. "Aja", Steely Dan and "In a Silent way, Miles Davis, are in that category as well. Absolutely beautiful musics.

This song has been my companion for the last ... 39 years. Every time I hear it, I must listen to it. One of the most challenging composition, and yet, it flows like a stream. It's the proof of the mastering of their instruments. They make challenging sound easy.

My first PMG purchase and still my favorite PMG album. Pat and brother Mike (flugelhornist) were born in Lee’s Summit, MO which is a suburb of Kansas City. I have met Mike at one of Pat’s shows and seen them both twice. Check out Mike Metheny’s “Day In, Night Out” and in my eyes Pat does no wrong. I saw them live a half dozen times in the 80’s in So Cal. You are correct when describing Lyle’s Piano solo. It evokes so much emotion, as does a great deal of PMG music. Pedro Aznar was a brilliant addition, and he brought a vibrant youthful energy to the live shows during his tenure.

I saw Pat Metheny in Miami during their First Circle tour in 1984. Listening to this is wonderful yet bittersweet for me. The beauty of this music is wonderful, but the nostalgic element is realizing that this period of my life will never return and is a distant but beautiful memory.

I've seen PMG four times, 1983, 1991, 1994, and about 1999. The bittersweetness you write about, Joe, is real for me, especially for this track. I first heard it on a "Jazz brunch" hour on a local rock station, back when individual stations could decide their own programming. The deejay just said "wow" when it was over, and I soon had my own copy of "First Circle." I would play it in my cassette Walkman wherever I went and felt freedom and exiliration. Having a song that could immediately elevate mood as a young adult was very special at a time where the world was "my oyster" and I was charged about the future. That's what nostalgia is, a happy/sad feeling about a point in the past that can't be repeated. Thanks for sharing.

The voice for the 1984 tour was Pedro Aznar. He recorded with the Pat Metheny Group a number of times. He eventually became a big star in his native Argentina. Needless to say, in 50 years, Pat has played with a ton of his musicians. The Pat Metheny Group in 1984 was Pat Metheny (guitars0, Lyle Mays (RIP) (keyboards), Steve Rodby (bass, electric and acoustic), Paul Wertico (Drums), and Pedro Aznar (vocals, percussion, backing guitars). All five of these folks were talented as heck, and most of them were the core of the band for over a decade.

Hola chicos!!!.

I saw Pat Metheney 7 times. He is such an amazingly talented musician. The First Circle is an incredible piece of music. The album “Letter From Home” is highly recommended. Also, check out the album “Secret Story”. With regards to First Circle, I wept like a baby the first time I heard it. Discovering his albums is a journey and great adventure. I lastly highly recommend the album “Question And Answer”.

Had the great fortune to see Pat Metheny live three times over the years in great venues: Radio City Music Hall, The Wiltern Theatre in L.A. and the Fox Theater in Atlanta over several tours. So privileged to have seen him all three times with Lyle Mays and Co. Sublime music! 🎶🎵 The double live “Travels” album is astounding - try “San Lorenzo” for one. And check out a video of Pat playing his custom 42-string Pikasso guitar on “Dream Within A Dream.” 🤯

Surely one of the most emotional & spectacular music performances of all time, and arguably PMG’s greatest moment. And besides Pat’s exquisite Baroque- esque section, he’s playing rhythm guitar exclusively. Extraordinary Rhythm playing! Considering his discography, unique in that regard and offering evidence of what a remarkably versatile player he is. Lyle’s greatest solo w/PMG, and his synth lines throughout a cornerstone of this historic recording. Not enough superlatives.

I've seen Pat Metheny more than any other musician, probably a dozen times , , and have come away from every performance with the same thought, the man is a genius. For those guitar players that haven't had the pleasure of seeing him live you have missed seeing a master of his instrument. His playing on some of Michael Brecker's albums is brilliant and shows how he can fit in many music styles.

Wow, I'd forgotten how superb this album is, how beautifully Pedro Aznar's vocals added to the Group; I'm so glad you did this one! I first saw the PMG back in June '78 in Austin, touring behind their first group album, with Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb on bass and drums. My friends and I knew him from his work with Gary Burton - there's a great set on UA-cam featuring that band, with 20-year-old Pat, you should check it out - and Pat's incredible "Bright Size Life" album with Jaco, and had been listening to the first PMG album nonstop, so we were super stoked to see them, and they did not disappoint in the slightest! It's been great to follow him through the years, and his openness to "outside" playing ("Zero Tolerance for Silence", "Song X" with Ornette Coleman), his sublime work as an accompanist (with Joni Mitchell, in her band with Jaco and Michael Brecker, for example), his exploration of new instruments, and his ongoing fertility as a melodic composer has been just remarkable. And damn yes, it sure was sad to lose Lyle Mays last year. Thanks again!

Kudos for posting this, N&L! I became captivated by PMG as soon as I heard them (in 1979). I share your emotional reaction to compositions like this--they reach out and grab your soul. (I was raised in a family shaped by music--my father (jazz) and both grandfathers (classical) were professional musicians of the highest level; mom was a weekend warrior jazz singer. When she said that she was mesmerized by Pat Metheny's music, that was the highest acclaim; she was extremely picky, and was always hovering around to offer advice when I practiced.)

Saw them perform this song at Cullen Auditorium/U of H campus in 1983 before First Circle came out and again at the Greek Theatre in 1985. Got caught up in your emotional reaction. Yes, Lyle Mays piano solo is SO dynamic! Great performance that rivals his "San Lorenzo" piano solo. Love Pedro Aznar's vocals on this track. I own all PMG albums. They are must buys!

I'm a huge Pat Metheny fan. We lost his keyboardist & partner, Lyle Mays, last year. Those who have seen them live can attest to their 'wall of sound' which is a lot like a rock concert fused with jazz. Not a wrong note when they play live, superb musicians. This is a complex piece of music, and almost impossible to play. One of their best.

There are no brushes in this. The drums are all sticks, and there are a few different kinds of shakers in the percussion plus some digitally sequenced percussion on the Synclavier.
Pedro Aznar is the singer (and percussionist and second guitar) on this. Richard Bona sung it on tour 18 years later, and I had the pleasure of seeing him sing this in person. He did it beautifully.

Yes guys, Pat Metheney Group is a very spiritual music. Pat Metheney in my view was Beethoven in a previous life where he composed the Anthem of joy talking about btotherhood and in this incarnation he achieved the goal of brotherhood by inviting to play with him to the most talented musicians from different parts of he World such as Pedro Aznar, Nando Lauría, Richard Bona, Gregoire Maret, for naming just some of them. And the keyboards and piano of Lyle Mays, an extraterrestrial musician was more than the 50% of the music of the group. I never saw a musician playing at the same time the piano, the synthethizer- orchestra and an organ. He was really a genious from the outer space who gave us the joy of his music for 30 years. I celebrate you appreciate such state of art in music.

I'm so glad you acknowledged Lyle Mays. I have been grieving this master/genius musician/pianist/composer like a close relative. First Circle always makes me feel like if I start running at certain parts in the piece, I can just jump up and start flying through the sky. It literally cuts gravity in half. The vocalist is Pedro Aznar. The thing that you thought was a brush was actually a type of percussion instrument/shaker. I've seen the group countless times since the early 80's up until the mid 2000's. They were very accessible after shows and willing to have conversations with members of the audience and there is/was nothing on earth like one of their live concerts. The group was actually lead by Pat & Lyle, very early on they were told to name the group under pressure and in the moment they just agreed to have Pat's name be the identifier and they just never officially changed it, which Lyle always stated was perfectly fine with him. And last, Pat always said that if it weren't for record company business reasons, he would never give any of their compositions a title, so often, you'd go to their concerts before they recorded and just hear music with no title at all so it did not influence your imagination with a title. You'd only find out the title AFTER the album was recorded. It was even more magical that way. RIP Lyle Mays.

The first time I have seen Pat Metheny live was in 1977. He was not well known then and was doing the first part of Jean-Luc Ponty (who played with Zappa among others). Before the show, I met some friends of my brother and they told me "I didn't know you where coming to see Jean-Luc Ponty". I told them "No, I come to se Pat Metheny, you may not know it yet, but so did you". I met them back at the end of the show and they told me "You where right, we saw Pat Metheny".
