I don't think people realize how much talent it took to pull off that performance, One thing about it I don't care what kind of mood you were in when they started to play you are laughing by the end and these days that is nothing but a good thing.
Southern hippie...I'm an old western hippie straight out of the 60's. Totally agree this video so cool. Brings back lots of memories. This totally cheered me up and made the rest of my day. PEACE OUT!!!
Two of the funniest comments I saw about this performance: “They are playing this song like their tour bus is double parked and a cop is writing them a ticket!” & “ If cocaine were a song it would sound like this.”
Absolutely. Guitarist Jan Akkerman was voted greatest guitarist in the world by Melody Maker Magazine in 1973, the year of this video. He's also a highly accomplished lutenist and classical guitarist... The vocal ability of Thjis van Leer is outstanding. He's also classically trained in piano, flute and organ from various musical conservatories in Europe.
Not only did they speed up the performance for Midnight Special. The song itself was written in a very roundabout way. The lead came in to the studio one day, sat down behind the organ and played that one riff. They all liked it so much, they wanted to build a song around it. Only issue is that they couldn't really think of anything, so people just started jamming. Then, when all the instrumentals were in place, with five solos, they couldn't really think of any lyrics, so he did what the others had done and just started jamming, using his vocals as an instrument, making any sound he could think of. And that's how we got one of the most unique listening experiences in history.
A few minutes of manic madness, I love it so much. Hope you all appreciated it. The audience at the end giving them a standing ovation gives me chills.
There was a rumor in 1972, that this 'fast' version of the song .... yes a slower one was recorded in Holland in 1971 ... due to time constraints Midnight Special Director told Thijs Van Leer (keyboardist, flautist, vocals) only part of the song could be performed, not wanting to leave out any of their music, the band decided to speed it up for their television performance ... when they went to Sire Records to record the US/Canadian version, the producer said "No No, like you performed it on Midnight Special." and supposedly that's how it happened.
Yes, the real/actual song is like 6+ minutes but I think they were only given about 3 1/2 to 4 minutes on the show. Forget about cutting, just play faster!
Richo Richards Apparently, it was neither. The story goes they were told to keep their performance around 3 minutes, but they didn’t want to cut anything! So...play it double speed! 🤣
I've watched reactions to this song as often as I can find them. The looks on people's faces are priceless. I know when I first heard this song back in the '70s it was a definite "WTF?" moment.
The guitarist, Jan Akkerman, was ahead of his time. Interestingly, if you've seen the Trolls World Tour movie, a couple of the characters do the yodeling part (or they used it from the original song recording.) My kid (6 yrs) laughed at the yodeling and I showed him this exact performance and he was rolling. I love this song from my childhood. Thanks for reviewing!
Hit here in Canada too. I loved this song, so I was shocked when it jumped into that coked up tempo. It's not too difficult to find the studio version on YT though.
These fabulous musicians are Dutch. Jan Akkerman is considered one of the best guitarists in the world. Did you see the crowd? A total standing ovation, they were very popular in the US.
@@santyrush Btw. Only english speaking countries call us Dutch. It's from Deutsch, who in english are called German. We call ourselves Nederlanders, like all other countries do. And Germans are called Deutschers or Duitsers in other countries.
They played the original version of this in that movie "Baby Driver" when he was getting chased on foot and it was badass! And yes this was the 70s! I like the original better!
I watched the original Journey to the center of the Earth on acid. This was on a Friday night, I knew it was coming on and scarfed the acid for the movie. About a half hour into the movie my phone rings and it was my job, i worked in a coal mine, they wanted me to work the next day. Be dressed and in the hole by 8 AM, without thinking i said yes. It worked out, i was still trippin' at 8 in the morning so it turned out to be one of my better shifts. I didn't start coming down till about noon anyway. Got to watch a cheap classic movie and make time and a half with an excellent buzzz. I was happy.
I saw the title, and could not click quick enough. This song is proof that lyrics do not always matter. FYI, Helloween does an excellent version of this song, off an album they did called "Metal Jukebox" that is all cover versions of classic rock songs. I used to give my mother in-law crap by making her read Dr. Seuss' "Fox in Sox" book to my daughter, because it is all tongue twisters. My daughter loved that book, because I could read it no problem. :D
