- The Toyota GR86 may not be the fastest, flashiest or most expensive sport coupe around; but it’s for those very reasons that we consider it near-perfect for folks like us that just want to get out there and drive! For 2024, Toyota is giving us even more to love while also celebrating the origins of the legendary “eighty-six,” with this TRUENO edition. #ToyotaGR86 #Trueno #GR86

Hearing John Davis throwing down all those Initial D references kinda broke my brain
The fugiwara zone through me for a loop
Bro yes! The "EuroBeat Playlist" did it for me 😂😂😂
Now I want to watch Initial D again
shits wild
Love the eurobeat reference.
Running in the 2020s.
eurocrap
same, LOL! IDK who wrote this review but they definitely know the audience for this car! (I suspected as much from one of the previous reviews, extremely amused how far they leaned into it for this one.)

Won't Fall Apart
John doing his job and research. Eurobeat and the Fujiwara reference 👌
I can tell the writers had fun with this. Mustve gotten their tofu orders in good time
The last of the analog, affordable sports cars. This and the Miata.
mustang too

@basshead. True. Except the Mustang is almost 4000 pounds, a bit over a thousand heavier than the GR. It's a GT car, or for long, high speed road courses. Not as much fun on any tight corners or smaller tracks like Roebling Road for example. I live in Savannah, so I can tell you I have posted faster times with my 2013 FRS, which is even slower. I have yet to take my s2000 out there, but anything light and nimble is more fun on that track.

5.9s to 60 is not slow.
Yes it is lol.
For 1990 standards yes but my 07 Camry V6 does that not really impressive anymore
@@FATmenDRIVEtrucks Is it tuned? Camry's have the 3.5 GR V6 thats found in the Lexus IS. it doesnt really surprise anyone that with 270+hp you get sub 6 second 0-60. At the end of the day, the 86 is supposed to be a RWD corolla. What did you expect? Lotus Elise type performance?
Slow? No. Fast? No.
@@kbdadriftking No, it's not. Not unless you drive an infinity
The references to Initial D ❤ Definitely car enthusiasts!
This video format makes me think I'm in 2010 watching youtube and I don't know why
yeah they didn't really change their format since they started doing this
Motor week wouldn’t be Motor week without John 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Always a great show 👍🏻
5:17 I am so glad Motorweek understands its audience for this one, LOL! Question of course is how much for the Fujiwara Tofu decal to complete the look?! can't legally drive but if I could, damned if this wouldn't be my dream car right here.
'24 Panda Trueno.... itsuki: "so cuuuuuuuuu!"
Iggy is my favorite ❤
0 - 60 in 5.9 and 22mpg. Peak automotive performance.
Just drove a new BRZ. Fun as hell. These are great cars, pick one up before there gone!
What? No tofu shop decal option?
Just Krauts
vegans will be unhappy
I would’ve loved this with 250hp and a higher rev range.
gets a like, just for the Eurobeat reference alone. 😁 👍
What an excellent car.
A Nicely balanced car
The style of the video reminds me of older times
So seeing a new car like the gr86 is super cool
Would love more content like this.
Basically time travel
Aint no way John Davis made a Eurobeat reference. GOAT
Wish Chevy still pumped out cobalt ss turbos standard with 280/320 power and brembo brakes (in a different body of course) . 24k USD loaded back then.
Weird to see American companies give up on sport Compacts and Korean companies embrace them.
@@sjhudon386 They don't make a huge profit off of them is why.
@@AthenaAutocross
They didn't, but you're also looking at the electrification of American cars , the loophole of electric equivalent MPGs, and the fact you don't have "tradesman vehicle" loopholes for EPA requirements as well.
this sounded like one of those late night infomercials ... 'for your very own Trueno Edition, call now~"
Here in Canada, GR86 Trueno is $8K more expensive than BRZ tS + ~8 extra months for delivery!!! Trueno and tS are basically the same cars... so, I opted for BRZ tS
Such a good looking car! I wish it had Toyota drivetrain though.
Y'all still the best at this❤
I wonder if John Davis got any of the references as he was reading the script, or if they all went over his head...
Of course he does. He was there when it was written ❤
Looks like a commercial from the late 90's love it
love the references sprinkled into this great overview
Trueno = Thunder
Love it!
Wasn't expecting an Initial D edition of the GR86 directly from factory. Love all the references scattered in the review.
$2k for upgraded wheels tires Brembos and Sachs is pretty amazing value for money if you’re adding it to a base car!
That's if u can get it at msrp. Everywhere was marking the prices up to 38k
Thank you Toyota! Thank you!
Would be a great little autocross car.
Assuming oil starvation issue is fixed...
@a_single_white_female I believe the oil starvation issue was due to excess rtv getting into oil pickup lines. So yes hopefully they fixed this issue.
@@tommieboi707 It is unlikely they fixed it IMO.
@ tommieboi707 I have read that this was a problem on the brz of 2013 but after this was fixed
NANI??!?? Jhon Davis Concept Driftooo
Owning a BRZ for 8 years now and it's a fact, it's "just 200HP" engine makes it the most misunderstood sports car.
Yes, if you are looking for a straight line drag strip getaway car, this car is not for you.
But if you are somebody who knows how to properly drive to the limit in corners, this is for you.
Take this car through the hills and mountains and you are going to fall in love with it's chassis.
Out of the factory it stands high on his wheels, lowering this car an inch or even more changes the look dramatically (much better).
I live next to the famous Nordschleife and I get more questions about my BRZ than all those guys driving a Porsche GT3.
Roebling Road! This track is local to me, and have driven it more than a few times! So cool to see it used in a @MotorWeek review or any review for that matter!
John is a true icon!
Can't wait for the LEVIN Edition!
As a long time member of the high horsepower club & a bit jaded, all I can say is these GR86's are so dam awesome. And if you don't find the pure enjoyment in these then you should be asking yourself am I really a true car lover???
mY muStaNg is FasTer
Slow car fast > fast car slow
I don't know if the Trueno Edition "is the one for me," because I watched this whole video and am not sure what sets the Trueno Edition apart from it's stable-mates. It's a graphics/paint package on top of the performance pack's brakes, wheels, suspension upgrades?
Well, that performance package is standard. Optional on the other trims. The Trueno black/red interior is one of a kind. It's not available on any other trim.
Brembo 4 piston brakes and different dampers
This paint scheme warms my heart!! ❤️
Made my down payment on a '22 today! Car show condition, babied by the owner, and has air suspension. It's magnetic gray and looks awesome.
Hopefully you didnt get shafted from the financing like did.
@MidnightV6 I got a little inheritance windfall, so I can pay it off. Also got a Silverado for hauling.
very Cool that they released this edition of the GR86.
Love the intial D references and love the GR86! What a great looking car, I just wish they did a little more correct with the "TRUENO" edition. Correct "GT-S Twin-Cam 16" adapted for the GR86, a more retro style pattern on the seats and the GR bodykit/exhaust. Otherwise the GR86 (and BRZ) will go down in history as a legend.
I'm not sold on the side graphics but otherwise nice!
The car looks better without the decals
Trueno=thunder
Great looking car decent power is ment for handling lightness i like
Again it’s not all about 0-60 time straight line speed.. it’s just one a 1000 things that makes a difference in how fun a car is to drive
The original AE86 was a corolla.
When are they going to give it some power ? 2028?
This review is that much more amusing to watch if you have Gas Gas Gas playing in the background.
When you need something, just a little bigger than the Miata. A pocket rocket 🚀 for sure, but I still like the interior of the Miata more.
If you can fit in it. Hard to pack a stick of gum in the Miata.
Nice look and style wish it was a little bit faster
My VW Golf MK7 1.8t with a stage one tune produces 241hp 273tq and does 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds. I'm not impressed Toyota, especially since my Golf cost (adjusted for inflation) less than 23k all in.
Watched initial D and love this modern rendition!
Honestly debating if I want to keep modding my 2019 86GT or sell it and put it towards a GR86. It seems everything about the new GR86 is better minus the steering feel. Apparently feels even more electronically assisted that you really don't feel anything when taking corners.
2:25 who is this guy …..and what high performance driving school taught him that hand position for track work
Better get a great theft deterrent system… trust.
John Davis is a LEGEND
I'd have to get a Miata, cuz topless.
Considering a mid model upgrade, and suspension an brakes being upgraded they really should have at least given a 15% bump in power. Its what everyone wants anyway
1. Buy a GR86
2. Buy a Supra 2.0 (Celica)
3. Take that Boxer engine out of the GR86
4. Take the B48 out of the Supra 2.0 (Celica)
5. Swap the B48 onto the GR86
6. Swap a Manual S58 engine onto the Supra 2.0 (Celica) chassis, upgrade suspension and brake, and there you have both, a fast GR86 and an even faster Supra!!
1. Buy a Supra 3.0 and be done with it.
@@bearclaw5115 I was just being extra!!

Great breakdown and analysis. I agree. Charles is too much for Arman. He will have his time, but not yet.
Nobody likes Arman 😢
Watanabe wheels, Fujiwara Tofu Shop decal from Amazon, paint the rest of the hood black. Done.
What's bizarre is that the 0-60 times and gas mileage are similar to the new Tacoma lol.
I got one :D mind was blown when I was one of the lucky ones to get it!
It’s such a pretty car in motion
Would kill the downhill mountain pass in Memphis while also dodging gunfire
I feel like John's just been in this place before talking about the engine
YOU GUYS NEED TO UPGRADE YOUR CAMERAS- I FEEL LIKE IM WATCHING AN AD FROM THE EARLY 2000S

How are the mpgs worse than my awd audi s3?
Takumi Fujiwara would appreciate this new version I guess...🤩
I can't believe you'd put the helmet on the hood like that bro, you're gonna scratch it
it would be better if the trueno edition comes with the pop-up headlights..that's one of the trueno identities tbh..this is a levin gr86..
Now let a young and capable fit driver out there to show you what it can do.
Why is the intro guy whispering? hahaha. Wish I could have one of these cars.
Wouldn't this be a Levin?
Yes 😢
TRUEeno.
How?
@@PliskinHK The Trueno has pop-up headlights. The Levin and the 2024 car does not.
@@krdjmtc The Trueno stopped having pop-up headlights since the 90s
Okay, are we gonna get a GR corolla levin?
The fact that there isn't a trim between the GR Corolla and XSE is criminal. But I don't think that'd be possible since Levin and Trueno are the same car. The GR Corolla and GR86 are much different cars. I'd rather have a XRS or legitimate Corolla GR Sport trim with 220 HP, manual, and FWD.
@@djhero0071 Wasn't that the Apex trim?
@@djhero0071 I sort of feel you on the GR Corolla though. Bought one in December (at MSRP!) and love it but man sometimes I feel like it's just a little too powerful. Thought about the 86 but I went with the 4 doors and hatch because I only have space for a single car and I'd like it to keep some practicality.
I need that
Thanks to subaru I remember this engine In the subaru 4 door sedan GL10
Gotta love that panda trueno 🥰
The driver will be pulled over by not turning on the headlights :)
Eurobeat intensifies
🔥🔥
New MR2????
Everyone who says this car is slow obviously sucks at driving and has rear ended, side swiped, and totaled at least 3 cars.
It's a Subaru platform with a Subaru motor that didn't want to snatch sales away from the WRX so they left off the most important thing everyone wants, considering it's the same goddamn motor. The least you could've done was to team up with Honda. You could've had a K series engine, and they could've made a new S2000. Instead you go with a car company that has zero pull. Way to go Toyota.
The car just needs wider tires to look right to me.
Tofu delivery boy 😂
At 1st, I thought Mr. Davis said Truanal? 🤔
No flat bottom wheel??? WTF?
No extra power is crazy.
You seem to have no understanding of how this car came to be
Clearly doesn't know the reason the AE86 got popular in the first place. Hint - it isn't big hp
@@Trades46 It doesn't need BIG HP, just adequate HP, 300 HP would be perfect for a car that size. People who buy sports cars don't care about safety technology, whatever money Toyota wasted putting that stuff on this new car should have gone to engine improvements.
@@Scorpio1075 It would have been great at 250hp, 300 gets to be a bit too crazy for the average person in a car this light.
@@AthenaAutocross As long as the torque isn't too high it's usually easy to control a naturally aspirated engine. If someone is a beginner, leave on electronic nannies that are there to keep people safe.
300 HP and 240 lb-ft of torque (NO turbos) would elevate this sports car to the next level. Save money by canning the new safety suite technology, and put the money plus a few extra thousand into a better engine. Even if the price climbed to $38K, Toyota would sell many more units because the performance would finally be on par with what enthusiasts are looking for.
Thank you internet expert!
So you just want the inline 4 Supra.
@@AthenaAutocross NO. First, the 4 Supra is a turbo engine. Second, the visibility out of the Supra is HORRIBLE in comparison to the GR86 and BRZ.
@Scorpio1075 how many modern N/A cars with the displacement of the GR86 do you know that can reliably put out 300 HP? More so than that, giving the 86 300 HP would step on the toes of the Corolla. It doesn't make much sense (I say as I still want a 220 HP manual GR Sport Corolla or SOMETHING in between the XSE and GR that I can drive in the winter... so not the 86)
@@djhero0071 A sporty base model Yaris/Mazda 2 with 200hp would be magical.
Can it do donuts ?
will sell like hotcakes
It should, but it won't.
