Subie Things
This is essentially a Subaru under the skin
Much like the way the Supra is a BMW under the skin
So there are several places there is still Subie stuff
On the engine
Door jambs on each side
The key
Trunk wiring harness (and more)
Aero
We mentioned the Supra a second ago and people get triggered by fake vents
They’re all real here
The date lists
Birthday lists
If you just can’t with facebook anymore, get an 86
Anniversary list
Does your wife hate you once a year cuz you forget?
Not if you own a 86
Roadside assist
Here’s something no one has ever cared about or asked to see
Hopefully you never need it
BUT the icon is different the deeper you go
Rear seats
Literally no legroom
But if you slide it forward you get food mats
Are these part of the $180 mat charge?!
Not much else to the back
Same materials
Isofix points
Exhaust
Speaking of things that are probably more than they’re worth
This has upgraded 1700$ exhaust
Sounds good, but lots of money
Says GR on each side of the pipes
Lord Doug didn’t even show you THAT
The engine
It’s a subaru engine that toyota has put their name on..literally
The old engine was 2.0, now 2.4 boxer
228 hp now (about 25 more than before)
185 lbft - but importantly fixed the massive torque hole in the middle
GR air filter….$75
Styling
Most different from the BRZ in frowny grille
Color: steel
Baby supra running lights
GR fender vent inserts
$160….skip
Black wing mirrors
Molded in rear wheel fang
Exaggerated ducktail for premium
Rear end details
Reverse camera in middle of trunklid
Kinda like miata, bit not as bad
Hidden trunk release in fake full width taillight
Rear bumper applique
$160
GR embossed…not subie
Trunk
Small opening
Decent size tho
Rear seats fold…really practical
No spare, but you can get one on eBay (topher)
Turn signal stalk
Stupid return to middle design
Steering wheel
I think this is the exact same wheel as last gen
But now with GR logo on bottom
SUUUUPER skinny #nogirth
Shift knob
Upgraded GR shift knob
$150
Wheels & tires
18 in gunmetal
Michelin PS4 tires (great grip, kinda loud)

Even headrest suede
Heated seats

Lap timer
Cupholders
Where tf are they?!
Hidden in the center cubby
So nowhere to put your phone
Start/Stop button
GR logos everywhere
But this one lights up
Doesn’t pulse like some tho
Rear view mirror
The most simple/basic rear view mirror i’ve seen in years
My 08 passat had a more robust mirror than this
Thb i kinda like it
Interior design
Pretty similar to last gen
A little ritzier but a lot of carry over
Price
29k to start
31k for premium

Or..MR2?? Muhuhahaa!
both are incredible pieces of art
In what world exactly is that a “skinny” steering wheel? If you want to know what a truly skinny steering wheel looks and feels like just drive a car from the 60’s or 70’s. They were not only skinny but the diameter was huge. Back then when fixing up a car for racing or even high performance street driving the very first thing we did was to replace the steering wheel. On modern cars however the steering wheels are about the optimum diameter and girth for high performance driving or even racing. And as someone who did a lot of racing and car modification in my youth I can tell you that I would not feel the slightest need to change out that steering wheel. Its just perfect as is.
If i could afford, both of them
The alcantara on the dash is to prevent sun glare. Ridiculous yes, but that’s it’s purpose
Innnnnteresting
It also feels good when I rub my nipples on it 😌
I drive across a sizeable bridge over a lake at about 8:45am ish on tuesdays and thursday, facing eastward. Let me tell you, the alcantara doesn't do shit lmao. Looks alright though, I guess.
Yup. Better than seeing the reflection of shiny plastic on your windshield.
@@future_phonk Yes. Seeing the dashboard reflection covering the windshield is very annoying and distracting to me.
Thanks for your review. The GR86 uses the Toyota D-4S injection, which is why the plastic cover has these things printed on it. Toyota didn't "pay for the privilege to be on it". Also, Toyota owns 20% of Subaru, so there's that.
That 20% didn’t come for free, did it?
@@RedBRZ23 Yeah it was free. A gift from Santa.
@@buntafujiwara3586exactly! 😂😂😂
Also Toyota developed almost the whole body for the twins and the supra uses bmw parts but Toyota turned indo a more reliable car and everything on both cars where co-developed, Toyota make things happen
(Im so sorry for my poor gramar, i not fluent in english)
@@lacostealmeidadasilva8529 that’s right. That’s why most parts on the GR86 say “Subaru”.
Yes, the small backseat carpets are included in the $180 cabin carpet package.
Toyota should've just make it a two-seater and give more leg room for the front. This is a fun car to drive. Definitely not a family type car. Make it lighter as well.
Its ok with the 2 small rear seats it drops insurance rates.
I could bring my daughter to school with those back seats, makes no sense to not have back seats if the car will fit them
@@inizilla_fk7 get a minivan, makes no sense to put your baby girl in back seat of a 86
@@badboy-gn8fumakes no sense to not and instead buy a minivan lol
There is an upgraded rear view mirror option as well, the auto dimming kind with programmable buttons for garage doors and the like.
WOW! what a great review. I thoroughly enjoyed everything that was said and covered in this video. Keep up the good work. Give us more please!! ahhhhhhhh.. Yes
i paid for the compass equipped upgraded autodimming mirror... it is a very nice upgrade for my brz and has programmable garagedoor clickers. Worth it!
I'm middle aged ... and LOVE this car. I just wonder if it's too small.
Great video! Thx for sharing.
The premium also gets steering reactive headlights
i think that's only in auto tho. honestly there are some features that are cut out of the manual premium that shouldn't be. adaptive cruise control is cut out of all the manuals, like sure of course the car won't switch gears for you in manual but it can still automatically adjust the throttle, instead they choose to cut it out. also parking sensors aren't in the manual, sure not need especially with a camera still included but still would be nice when paying for the "premium" edition.
@@fxncy2566Ita manual too. I have manual, and it has them. Doesn’t get eye sight stuff. Next year it will
I bought the 2023 BRZ charcoal black. I live in Canada and last winter it was cold and had ice accumulate on driver door. When you grab door handle the window quickly drops 1 inch to break the seal. But.. when it's frozen you can't get in your car.. door gets stuck with window gasket. The coffee holders are bother some.. I place napkins over the usb ports next to the holder to prevent and spilt coffee. The stock stereo is okay but I noticed even on low the door speakers vibrate the side mirror a lot. On a rainy day the reverse camera is near useless because rain drops on lens. Other then that.. The BRZ is very fun to drive and more.
I just purchased a '24 GR86 "Premium" trim in Steel yesterday after putting a down payment and signing up for a wait list on the GR Corolla.
This feels so good, am so excited for this spring and summer to truly use this platform.
Thanks for this upload!!
Hey man, what do your payments look like and down payment if you don’t mind me askign
@aymericolvera3372 I put a 10k down payment towards the 86, and it's a hair over 460/month. It's absolutely worth it!
I financed it through my own credit union, so they helped a lot with interest, and I'll refinance in a year
great video, keep grinding

Are the rear seats a split fold down?
Is there a setting that gives you a radial display option for your speed?
Is the rear spoiler adhered or bolted to the trunk?
8:56 On a scale of 1 to 11, how confident are you that those seats are *synthetic* leather? Thanks for the fun review! PS: The gopro headlamp POV was clutch/dope/awesome/rad/wonderful. (Choose your generation.)
Missed a couple things, Toyota let Subaru use toyota's direct injection for the engine, also the engine is tuned by Toyota, and the brz is tuned by Subaru, Toyota didn't pay to just put their name on it, it's mainly a Toyota project, Subaru just makes it. Also the "half fake" aero is blocked off because it supplied the engine and wheel bays with too much air. Also the left traction control button turns off everything except ABS after holding it for 5 seconds. The right traction control button only puts the car in track mode, which turns of stability control and tightens up the steering but that's it. Also not so fun fact the automatics come with Subaru eyesight and it sucks.
is subaru eyesight just the moving headlights?
@@fxncy2566 it's the auto stopping thing when the cameras detect an object in the road. The premium version comes with the adaptive headlights
Actually more of a Toyota insisted that D4-S be on the car. I read the backstory on it, and Subaru said it could not be done on the Boxer engine, and resisted the idea. Be glad it’s on both the BRZ , and the 86, as this system not only adds power, but you will not get carbon fouling like a normal DI engine, because the added port injection keeps the valves clean
@@boldcitycc@wheeze_86
how did y’all learn this? i want to learn more about this car and engine
Toyota owns 17% of Subaru, they've owned that stake since before the development of this car.
I imagine they found a way to work together in a way that was mutually beneficial
Honestly i learned a lot here and ive watched a ton if reviews
🙏
Haha Lord Demuro! Father Doug! 🤣
Papa Demuro 🤌
I just got a 2024 GR86 Premiumand its really interesting seeing the small changes, seeing what they decided to adjust and what they ignored.
love the anniversary record. does BRZ has it? It's gonna be a deal breaker for me
BEAUTIFUL machine! Love it
The engine isn't all Subaru. The dual injection system D4-S ( port and direct) is Toyota's.
just brought this car yesterday Toyota GR86 trendo blue any tips ? 😄
Is a trailer hitch option available for pulling stalled mazdas?
I find it weird that everyone complains about the turn signals. I have lived with them for over a year and prefer them over normal turn signal stalks. They are very easy to use, and I never have to manually turn off my turn signals because they do it automatically after completing a turn.
Do they self cancel for lane changes? My Honda Civic avoids the lane change cancel issue by only blinking 3 times, then self-canceling.
@@jfan4reva small nudge instead of full pushing to the indentation point will do the 3-blink signal just like any other car :)
@@jfan4reva yes they do

Great review lots of info. Only knock I have is shut up when doing performance driving and hard cornering at revs we want to hear the engine not your yapper. Thanks.
Omg you are hilarious! When you pointed out the hidden rear floormats and then said "Who is this for?" I just died 😂😂😂
Sound is so cool
I just test drove one yesterday and they added a weird square-shaped hole in front of the cup holder area. Not sure what it’s for…too small for a phone and too square for a cup. Why not just move the cup holders forward 4”
7:23 a bit nitpicky... you do the same motion for a regular control. and besides when you finish your turn, it does turn off
Would it be a good daily
Can you adjust the cruise control in 1 mph increments like some other Japanese cars?
Yes on the Auto
Really enjoyed the video. Thanks!
Thank you 🙏
I got the all weather floor mats and it came with the rear ones as well. Oh and the the GR shifter was $135 when I brought it (the auto version but I think Manual was the same price, must’ve went up.
Innnnnteresting
I could probably use this as a daily driver and take to the track on weekends.
Your missing a big one cup holder by itself in the middle of your chairs, and you forgot to mention the chargers between android and iphone and they gave it two parts of wires comes with it
Should you go this or base Camaro LT1 ( v8 )
Gr86
Love the rear floor mats
Yes BRZ does have it, too.
You can easily fit 2 (Small) passengers. Front seat a bit forward. Good to go.
Yeah, I really get tired of everyone saying that everyone knows that “nobody” will ever sit back there. My girlfriend is very petite and she would likely have no trouble sitting in the front seat with it way forward and her equally petite girlfriend could fit in the back seat right behind her. Now obviously this would not be ideal on a long trip but it would work quite well if we were all going out to dinner together or something like that. That back seat is only there for those extremely rare occasions when you might need to give a 3rd passenger a lift across town. Anyway, it would be more accurate for these car reviewers to say that the vast majority or adults will not be able to use the back seat.
I got the same pack and color👌
Don't forget that Subie oil filter!
if anyone bought the 2023 model, how long did it take for your car to come in? specifically in ontario canada. ik these cars take a few weeks-months depending on where u live but my dealer told me up to 6 months (ik its an estimate its not always accurate) and i called them not even a month ago and they told me they have no info on the car whatsoever (i ordered the basic auto in black but im not picky on the colour. i thought it would be a more common car so it would come in faster). i've already waited 6 months i want to know how much longer i could possibly have to wait. if anyone has a similar experience plz lmk!
7 months for my 6 speed
All depends sometimes you get lucky
@@lemmeknow5204 damn. hoping i can get mine at least before 2024 or right in the beginning of 2024.
@@Mr99Burns its been 7 months almost im getting so impatient but i dont want to cancel it bc ive already waited this long anyway
I just realizedthey have added an oil cooler to this engine whichthe 2.0 does not have.
$1700 is way too expensive for an exhaust option. When I got mine I got an MBRP Axle back, super easy install just 2 bolts and 2 rubber hangers, sounds very similar to this
Not OEM tho but ok .
@@BayBrimsta It does the job just aswell and costs less than 1/3rd the price, At $1700 one can buy aftermarket catbacks with a far superior build quality than the OEM one. Usually I do stick to oem when it concerns anything that would void the warranty or any kind of Sensor/computer part, But personally I got the car with the intent of customizing it as there is a lot of quality aftermarket support for the GR86.
Did you notice performance increase with axle black? Id buy it because of performance and not a different sound .
@@f4ke_nyex969 maybe a little but if its there its within the noise, a catback is obv the way to go for performance, I just got mine for the noise
I like the base more
i used to have a 2015 BRZ. now looking at this video, i realized how much 25 HP does to this car.. amazing
💪
I have a child's car seat in my BRZ lol
From Toyota's website, looking at the 2024 model, the specs for the "Premium" trim level show that it now starts at $34k - with an included automatic transmission. How do we feel about that?!!
they should have made the rear seat a straight bench instead of the hump, that would be better for what it gets used for-storage.
The hump is the driveshaft that connects to the rear differential. It's what makes the car go.
@@zacharywolter yeah i'm aware. i figured it was pointless after i posted it.
Would a 6’3 person be able to comfortably drive this car?
actually yeah i think so
Any news on the well documented subaru engine rtv problem? ..and engine oil starvation for gr86 ? Subaru is losing much respect for not owning and addressing these real problems.
Is automatic just as cool or manual the way to go?
have driven the auto, and it's not the way to go
With the car being as slow as it is an auto transmission just turns it into a regular commuter. If you want to have fun you need a stick to play with.
Driven both, auto is ho estly great still. If you just purely dont want a manual for personal reasons, the auto is still a fantastic daily driver

I just purchased the new BRZ and I’m in love with it. For some reason, this video popped up into my feed! 😂😂😂
I’m so on the fence I have option at the moment to get either at MsrP
how was the purchasing process? Were you able to get a manual easily?
@@reganmianI was able to get the 2023 that was available on the dealership’s floor. Luckily for me it’s my favorite color. Red with a six speed! Unfortunately now that I got injured at work, I don’t drive it as much and with only 1600 miles I’m on the fence on selling it.
@@reganmian easy. But unfortunately I’ve become disabled and 1600 miles later I’m debating on possibly putting it up for sale.
Is there an automatic option for this car
Yes there is!
As an old person I concur with your assessment of Facebook. 😏
It depends on your personal opinion if Toyota or Subaru looks and feels better. Both cars are very similar with some minor differences. I drive the 2023 BRZ and the outline for me looks better. Subaru in Germany is very rare and the STI parts are not necessary, but are looking great. It is a cool car concept, we are lucky to have these days. So enjoy every hour with your Toyota or Subaru. I think we will get not that much comparable stuff in the future. Other hypercars are nice, but they are not affordable for most of us.
Regarding the shift gear or automatic transmission: I have no chance to compare that for the BRZ, but for a normal car with actual safety features like automatic distance controls a automatic transmission is great. I think at this sport car a manual brings more fun and it’s easy to handle. Just my point o view. Better to have one with automatic than having none 😊
Nice review and good additional content at the comments. Thank you all for that.
everything is topnotch except the screen. not a big fan it, but nontheless, i would still buy it
Do you normally drive in 6th gear? Crazy seeing 6th gear at 45mph.
My GLI I'm usually in 6th gear by 40MPH and it's geared much taller than this
Dude you just called me old!!😜😀 (it’s true, I am)
Looks like you keep your seat leaned back pretty far
I canNOT decide between this and the BRZ 🤧🤧🤧 or saving 20k more for a RCF
I have this and consider trading for RC but probably won’t. RC very heavy
This car, MX5 and the much more exoensive GRC are 10/10 cars except this cars on flaw - the Subaru engine issues. It sucks coz otherwise this car is as good at it gets
everyday spirited driving wont blow up your engine
subaru boxer engines have a lot more issues than the trendy new exploding engine problem.… that’s just the icing on the cake lol when toyota allegedly redoes the drivetrain on this thing sign me up (at msrp)
My one and biggest reason for not buying one yet. That dam sSubaru boxer engine. Not to mention it sounds gawd awful 🫤
24 of the most common things you already knew about the 86
First of all, I really liked your video, the GR 86 us my favorite car ever and I enjoyed your video 💕
Then, I just wanna add that the alcantara on top of the instrument cluster is to reduce reflections on the windshield (See The Straight Pipes' review on the C8 Corvette for more info)
Also, Toyota did the fuel injection system in the Subaru engines because Toyota owns a part of Subaru and when they asked Subaru to give their engine direct injection they said it couldn't be done so Toyota engineers went in and made the injection system themselves, so yes, this is an engine co-developed by Toyota and Subaru.
This isn't a Supra situation where Toyota just redesigned, recalibrated and retuned a BMW M340i.
Also, the original idea was to only have the 86 and no BRZ but Subaru whete so happy with the prototype they wanted their own version and Toyota agreed because more sale is always good specially for this sort of cars :)
I'm so torn between getting a 86 or BRZ
@mrdilgames6546 what reason do you have for buying a BRZ over the 86?
I feel like I felt every bump and every noise. Other than that beautiful car
Those backseats are for 'legless passengers'.
Why does this kid sound like Doug DeMuro's son?
Wrong - Toyota hasn't paid Subaru to put on their logo on the engine... They have actually provided the Toyota D4S injection to use with the Subaru engine. So that's valid cooperation even if it's mainly a Subaru
For the same price & for driving alone, would you pick this or miata ?
This is a little more fun on a track I think so maybe this…but it’s close
@@dwnshft thanks.. i am considering these 2.
Why is this more fun than miata ? I thought the open air makes the miata more fun
@@goodlifebdg the Miata is probably a little more fun on public roads (especially if you prefer the drop-top experience) the 86 feels a little more disciplined and the rear slides a little more organically in my experience (more fun on track, also safer on track due to fixed roof)

like the gt86 more tbh
I still strongly believe that all the newer “cheap” rwd cars are overpriced. Got a 1st gen brz back in 2016 for 21k and that seemed reasonable at the time, ~35k for a facelift, alcantara, and a tune is just overly unreasonable.. but I’m still determined to get a 2nd gen (probably used tho… broke enthusiast stay broke 😅)

What else can you buy in a similar class for a similar price?
@@MeltingRubberZ28 there is no newer car that you can buy for that price, that is atleast as good as gr86

@prospect2664 so your gripe is more on any cars price vs average income compared to this car in specific
@@MeltingRubberZ28 no, its that 40k is no way a modest price tag... if it was under 27-30k, then yhea, it might be a modest price tag
So sad that Toyota themselves don't ha Pride on their brand anymore. If tjis would had been a 100% a toyota product im sure it would have sold 2X the amount they already have
Nice review. I feel like its overpriced. A couple add ons and you can buy a different driver focused car for the same price that has more standard options. They need to make it cheap again
What other driver focused car would you suggest with an msrp below $40k?
@korbynnull7666 if you're under 40k, you can get a lot. Elentra N is a good choice. GR corolla, mustang ecoboost, vw GTI. You could get a used BMW M2. Quite a bit to choose from
@@brandonp5592 already have a BRZ I just wonder what makes the 33?k MSRP of the twins overpriced/what else you think is a better buy in the price range. I wanted a GR Corolla but there was no shot of me getting a base under 42k in the timeframe I needed a car. Elantra/Veloster N is the only other “similar” car I actually considered. I did also look at Civic Si but that’s not really in the same class at all. I think Hyundai N models is the best counter to the value I see in the GR/BRZ.
Edit: the Elantra N is uglier than the Veloster to me, but you do get a lot of comfort features and some extra driving features over the GR86. Definitely a better sound system. But muh styling
@korbynnull7666 dont get me wrong. With the new engine, the BRZ/86 is a great car and its rwd. I just feel like 28k for a bare bones car that comes with no extras is a little much. Im currently shopping right now and I think the Civic SI is a better choice, its a honda and it comes with features that make everyday living better. Like the bose system. If you dont mind Kias, the Forte GT can be had with a manual and comforts. But if you get the forte GT automatic, you can get stuff like ventilated seats for even cheaper than the SI, and it still has 200hp.
@@brandonp5592 everything you listed has a base price higher than the premium GR86 with most being thousands over, and none are close to that same type of driving feel being hundreds of pounds heavier. The 86 is less Subaru than you are giving credit. Manufactured and engineered/developed are much different things. Magna Steyr manufacturers the supra in Austria.
