We Rescued a Seized Honda Ruckus Moped from the Woods, Will it Run & Ride Again?

  • The Honda Ruckus is one of the most popular 50cc mopeds here in the United States. It is more expensive than a lot of the Chinese models, but it's a Honda! In our years of working on mini bikes, motorcycles, and ATVs, Hondas are the hardest to kill- so when we were given this seized Honda Ruckus, we knew there was a good chance that we could get the 50cc 4 stroke liquid cooled engine running again.

    Hi guys, just wanted to let you know how much you've helped me with my recent loss of my dad, we would work on motorcycles all through my childhood and get old rust buckets running again. Unfortunately the past few years of his life we couldn't do any of that and the passion eventually died out, but watching you guys and how much you all love what you do, really brought back a lot of great memories and I feel like it's reignited the passion for tinkering I once had. From the bottom of my heart I thank you for just being yourselves

  • @Lucas12v

    The shims aren't wear items, the valves and seats are. The shims are changed to account for this wear. If you don't have an appropriate feeler gauge, soda cans are usually 3-5 thou thick and can be used in a pinch to get a rough idea. At least in the intake which will probably be around that clearance. The exhaust is probably around double that but it varies by engine. If the valves weren't closing, carbon probably built up on the seat. After adjusting the valves and running it, the carbon may wear off requiring adjustment again quickly.

    Ah this brings back a ton of memories, I used to have a Ruckus just like that one, mine was a beast though, it easily cruised at 45mph.
    I'd say The clogged muffler is robbing you of a lot of power ATM. You definitely don't need a "hop up" engine!! Get a new muffler and rebuild the valve train and you'll have yourselves a badass cruiser easily capable of 40+ mph. 👍👍

    Lucky! Around here, even a clapped out Ruckus will go for $2k at least. The engine isn't a GY6 either, it's the GET2 which doesn't have much in common with the GY6. The GET is a great engine even though you can't increase displacement very easily. The Ruck shop's stage 1 performance kit wakes up the bike a lot and it's a simple bolt on the parts and go. I'd love to see more with this bike!

    Pro Tip for the youngsters: when testing fuel system use odorless mineral spirits instead of gasoline. Far less combustible and hardly any smell. You can work around it and not worry about catching the shop or yourself on fire. The specific gravity is just slightly higher than gasoline so pumps and flow rates will be very similar. It’s petroleum based so it won’t swell orings or attack gaskets in the fuel system.

    You ever have questions about gy6 motors I know all about them. I'd tear the jug off it stretch out those rings on the piston a little or replace them timing marks are on the cam sprocket but tear it down at top dead some of them don't wanna run with the breather box cause the stock carbs are junk also that thing should do 45 50 it's got to be governed down

  • @demonic477
    @demonic477 2 роки тому +2

    the Ruckus is the one moped I always wanted to get just because you can get 75 and 100 cc jug kits from Japan for the little Honda and a over sized belt drive kit for the 100 cc engine upgrade. back when they came out they were huge and a lot of manufactures made upgrades expecting it to blow up which it did in a small way just not as big as was expected and I never understood why there just cool. they even had an off road variant that was really nice and had the most aggressive tire in the line up

    It has stuck valves from sitting for a long time. especially the intake valve you need to free up the valves. the previous owners probably layed it on its side filled the air filter with oil. then picked it up rode it until it seized up. John is having to much fun on it no doubt. Charles is the first one to crash it. take that big clunky muffler off of it and it will probably run better. I was thinking it was going to be a three. for the first number on the lap time. after Ike was slogging through the mud.

    • @Lucas12v

    • @musicauthority3516
      @musicauthority3516 2 роки тому +3

      @@Lucas12v It didn't run until they started messing around with the valve train. and an engine will run with sticking valves. but it will run but poorly. skipping, and backfiring, ect.. it depends on how badly stuck the valves are. because the valves don't stick open on every revolution of the engine. but the longer it runs the more the valves will free up.

    As a proud owner of a '16 Ruckus this one really hit the spot, was wondering when you guys were going to get to us. Gutless pig sure, but still fun to ride? Absolutely. If you try to take this out of a town center, you will only know the agony of 10 cars behind you waiting for a chance to pass. It only goes 38 at best. I haven't found a modification that doesn't just barely tweek performance. I think it is reliable. Happy to see a series on the same ride in my garage. Oh, you didn't mention it's Street Legal and parks wherever bicycles do. I don't remember many of your projects that do that. A bag of ice and a pack of drinks sits on the floorboards perfectly. Also, put some pegs on it. Way more control, less squirrely, I probably should have made that point first... Pegs.

    You guys should road trip on MTBs with a Monster? 78.5cc 4 stroke, or if you want adventure, stuff a 212 Predator in them, although the 212 poses some challenges fitting the engine, and getting the sprockets to line up, after that, your only problem will be, keeping the front wheel on the ground. I stretched the frame, and added a top motor mount, between the cross tube and the gas tank ears. I lucked out on the front downtube, and replaced the straight tube with sced 80 aluminum with an 6" rad bend at the bottom.My Rock Shock adj front end just clears the new tube at full turns.I also added an LED 7" Harley headlight, and a taillight with turns and brake lights, and a 3 magnet flywheel, and battery, under the motor plate. Rides great, very reliable, and the weight of the headlight helps keep the front wheel on the ground. After 3 years of riding in the Calgary, and now Windsor area, (very flat here), the stainless 2mm spokes started snapping on the rear wheel, so I have just fitted a 6 spoke aluminum "mag" wheel on the back, and 2 rides in, works great. I use the throttle stop screw to keep me at 80 km. In case you're wondering, I was using a hub adaptor on the spoked wheel, and its the second spoked wheel I've had on the bike. The first one did not have stainless nipples in the rim, and failed pretty quickly.

    I had one of these over 20yrs ago. Definitely the best 50cc scooter I ever had. Put a 22mm carb and a big bore kit on it and it will rip pretty dang good. Mine would do around 60mph. Cool to see one again 🔥👍✌️

    It would be important to note the difference between a moped and a scooter as they are not the same thing. Y'all should definitely get a moped to make some moped content. I would settle for some more scooter content if you guys got more scooters.

    I regret getting rid of mine bought it brand new and I had such a blast on it, modified exhaust, different roller weights and jetted it was good for 30,32 mph after that took it off road just all around fun and yes the floorboard is one piece. Gotta get another

    My ruckus was very hard to start for the first time of the day and was low on power. I grinded down the shims with sandpaper and now the bike runs like a dream. I didn’t have a shim kit I did it like a backyard mechanic I’ve had no problems since

    The only thing with hopping up mopeds is that they are limited in speed by law. Go over that and you need a tag and title plus insurance.
    Now the fun part.
    Back in the early 70s a friend and I rode dirt bikes and he rode MX. He knew all the tricks to wring out horsepower out of a 2 stroke. I had been given a Puch moped in exchange for some work on a car. Fun as it was we were used to life in the fast lane.
    Bigger bore, bigger carb, move the ports some and fashion an expansion chamber exhaust.
    I took the thing up the three mile long road my friend lived on. As I went I dialed in the carb and turned to make the return run. The thing had a pretty optimistic 50mph speedo on it so I let it loose. His house was about 1/2 mile from a very busy US highway. I thought I would peg the throttle going past and get on the brakes to stop at the highway. I went screaming past his house with that speedo pegged tight. I let off the gas and hit the brakes at about 32mph the brakes stopped stopping. I blasted across that road and took another mile to get turned around. Luckily no traffic was on the only north - South major highway on the west coast of south Florida at that specific point in time. The two-stroke gods were looking out for me that day.
    The point is going fast is fine but just remember that at some point you are going to have to stop. Those cable operated drum brakes were fine until we started improving things.
    That little motor went on a go cart and raced the rest of it's days. That never bothered me a bit...... LOL!
    Be safe out there guys.
    Cheers
    Terry

    A little cvt (variator) tuning will help with heavier riders. I weigh 240lb and had a kymco agility 50. Got it where it would accelerate decently (faster than most people would leave when the light turned green). Top speed on flat ground was 37mph. Would climb these Tennessee hills at 20mph.

    Any time you see a carb with a 4 screw cap like that one, you NEED to install the airbox for the carb to work correctly. Low pressure must be present at the large hole near the top of the intake venturi. The curved rubber tube between the carb and airbox is ENGINEERED to maintain intake velocity throughout the operating range of the engine.
    The GY6/QMB139 is truly one of the worlds greatest accomplishments over 100 years of the internal dinosaur burning engine development.
    If you compare a 50cc QMB139 to a supercharged 80 liter postwar aircraft engine, or even 16V 92 Detroit Diesel you will notice they are almost all identical in design.
    That was hard to say with a straight face.
    Seriously, the GY6 is designed to do the very most with the very least.
    Both other engines were built to produce as much power as they could with the technology they had. The GY6 will destroy the other two, power to weight. The AWESOME 3.2 HP is then modified for practicality to produce speed.
    GY6 AWESOME!

      I wish this Ruckus and its GET50 motor wasn't dusted so they could have gotten an actual impression of it. That aside I have been waiting a long time for them to get into the whole GY6 scene, maybe they will go for that good old 230cc kit if those are still around. That would be quite nice for this Ruckus as it's a perfect candidate for a swap with that dusted motor.

    • @kevinsellsit5584
      @kevinsellsit5584 2 роки тому +1

      @@nap8187 Glad you mentioned that...It is safe to say that even the highest output version of a GY6 that came new in anything with a warranty IS MAKING LESS THAN HALF OF WHAT THE ENGINE IS CAPABLE OF.
      Double your power with aftermarket parts!
