I grew up on KX-80s. I still think they might be the most fun all around dirt bike for general around the home / shop ripping around for fun. It's plenty powerful and fast and the bigger bikes just weigh so much and are so much larger you dno't really need all that just to rip around the yard. It's the perfect balance. We had a pw80 too that was a lot of fun. Small bikes are fun.
Ripping around their yard, they should have at least a 125cc, well Ike anyways, not sure about the other two. I had a CR250 up til a few years ago and that was a fun bike but, I suppose a little CR80 would be kind fun just to mess around with.
Took you a minute to find the powerband! 👀🤣 Don't underestimate a 2smoker, but ride them gears out until it coughs and splutters. You will have a lot of fun with more engines like these!
Love the 2 stroke content. And i just have to say: it is so much fun watching you guys so excited over a tiny 80cc engine. But i see why, that old crusty 80cc engine has more power then the most over built predator type engines you guys use on everything.. I am really hoping you do a go kart build with one of those engines. You could race a stock kx 80 engine against a stock predator engine, or even a fully built predator engine and see how they stock up against each other.
And according to my experience a 2 stroke is much more reliable I have a 250 ktm sx 2007 model that has never given me problems it always starts on demand even if it sat more than a year. I cant say the same of my 100cc crf honda that is a 2012 model, that bike has always been a struggle to get going if I didnt take it for a ride in a while.

My very good friend was pretty much expert on 250's, had his own track with pretty scary jumps. A kid shows up with one of these, He does a couple laps gets comfortable then does the biggest jump and broke his leg. The bike was fine though.
Nothing like the "Braaaappppp" of a two smoke dirt bike! Well done, guys! I agree with the other comments about a nice set of reed valves. Do that and get the fuel mix right, replace the clutch, and that little thing will scare the daylights out of you!
As soon as I seen the silver kx frame and the plastics for it I called it was 87. I had one when I was a kid that was passed down from my brother. The really awesome thing about the 87's was kawasaki offered a 105cc big bore kit as an optional add on, mine had it and it was a ripper!!!!
This video brings memories of fully restoring my 86 kx80 at 10-11 years old with my dad. That was my real in depth learning experience on how engines and suspension works. We did a top end, split the cases and did crank bearings and seals but it was my dads first time ever opening up a bottom end so we ended up rolling the seals at first, then we ordered the wrong size seals and realized after we had already opened it, then rolled new seals again, then we finally got it after using a press. My dad taught me how to strip, prime, and paint, we painted the frame because some guy painted it this weird blue color. We rebuilt the clutch on it and the water pump. Also cleaned up the carb and put a new intake boot. We put new handlebars, grips, levers, and kill switch. That gas tank was so old and whitened that I wet sanded the whole thing for probably around 30 hours. It got a whole new plastic kit and graphics. New tires. New seat cover. Got a whole new rear shock. We painted the whole engine semi gloss black. We rebuilt the front master cylinder. Theres probably a whole another list of things we have done. Nice video guys.

I love those KX 80s. I had a two-stroke 80cc dirt bike engine on a small go-kart and it would burn the tires 100% of the time it was very fast. I hope to see you guys put one of those motors on one of the smaller go karts like a dingo and throw down a Time on the Grand Prix track.
Don't weld the Kicker ,you'll melt the seal. Unfortunately it looks like the Clutch side crank seal is no good ,Sucking transmission oil into crank causeing a heap smoke.

It's the difference between a two stroke and a four stroke. Two strokes just have that power band that you can't get away from and they're just so much fun. The hole experience, the sound, the smell, the power, just more fun then a four stroke, but that's just me. I have an 81 ATC 250r two stroke that's a blast to ride. I really hope you do another video on this bike. I would really love to see some more of it.
Been watching you guys from the very begining..... for so long I feel like I know each of ya like a friend. You never disappoint...as always this episode rocks!
I have a brand new gasket kit i believe will fit those. They were ordered by mistake. I ended up swapping a honda gx200 engine onto it with a billet rod and flat top piston. Aluminum flywheel and slide carb. That thing rips.
I found a 1980 DS 80. I believe it's the first year for the DS. Complete bike too. Another project I will hopefully get to if nobody buys it. Ready to see this content. 2 strokes are the best
Nice find! If your at all interested in an even smaller 2 stroke dirt bike then try looking into the Kawasaki kx65. Those things are a blast, as small as a z50 with double the power.
Cool beans, I found an early 80's KX80 air cooled I think 1981 on Craigslist about 15yrs ago & fixed it up with parts I found on eBay. I also got a mint condition complete spare engine on eBay sold in many small pieces by a seller on EBay. Back then some ppl would start out an auction for only a penny with no reserve. IIRC I got almost every single engine part for only a penny each because nobody else bidded on them! Of course he overcharged me a bit on shipping but what's funny is he sells a lot of motorcycle stuff on eBay & that was the last time you'll ever see him list parts for only a penny & no reserve LOL 🤪. Cool powerful little dirt bike perfect for a youngster learning how to ride. Lots of fun. Thanks for sharing... 👊
Bad rings DO NOT cause smoking in 2 strokes. Sometimes crank seals can go bad and let gear oil into the engine which will cause smoking. Only 4 stroke engines smoke from having bad rings, since 4 strokes have oil in the crankcase and 2 strokes do not.
Considering I grew up on 2 stroke racing bikes I can say for sure excess blowby and excess exhaust smoke can certainly be caused by warn rings. If it really were the crank seal making it smoke that bad I don't think it would be idling as well and have plenty of lean running symptoms.

Would love to see this complete fixed up and looking nice. Engine overhauled and frame as well. A good cleaning and some scotch brite on the plastics. New grips and fix that clutch and the pipe. You'll be ready to go
Hey John, that kick stand deal works by putting the short peg into the center of the rear wheel, supposed to fall out when you stand the bike up and fall away.
when you were revving it sounded like it idled down quite quickly, from experience this is an issue where the main rod bearing is about to fail. great content, I'm looking forward to the builds you guys come up with these engines!
Great Video!!! (I could be wrong) My friend Kevin owned a 1976 Kawasaki KX 250 2 Stroke or maybe a 400 I didn't know what cc size it was. I pretty sure it was a KX Rippa I was 11 years old when i saw my friends Vintage Moto Cross bike. 13 years later i was 23 years old i weighed 120 pounds & crazy as ever LOL I rode my friend Travis's 2000 Kawasaki KX 125 with a Fresh Top End Rebuild It was Damn FAST!!!!!!!!! the back tire fished tale i bit under me i let the gas of for 2 sec's Cracked it I was Flyin' FAST! & it was my first time on that KX 125 Shit! Brings back some good memories of when I got a KX 80 in the summer of 1980 a long with my friends getting dirt bikes we had some crazy times on them dirt bikes one of the best memories of mine was getting riding gear from sr Kenny Roberts I got a set of Scott boots that were red and blue red leathers with black diamond padding on the thigh area and some riding tips like how to breath when riding and racing always look ahead of yourself and balance I raced my KX 80 for 4 years in highschool in Riverside California at John W North high along with working at Malcolm Smith racing in highgrove California as a clean up kid at the age of 14 my dad had reworked my KX 80 doing head work and carb along with over size piston talk about kicking A.s on the track
I used to ride dirt bikes as a kid, and a few years ago I got one of these in my shop to try to fine tune the carb for high altitude, and it was absolutely nuts how much power these little monsters make. I'm sure the liquid cooling helped a bunch, since all my old dirt rides were air-cooled back in the 70's and early 80's.😁👍
1.) fender thing is a subframe 2.) 32:1 fuel to gas ratio would perform better 3.) check the reeds they may be original 4.) the clutches might be ok the basket may be "grooved" nice find
this bike was my first bike ever im pretty sure even the same model, when we got it was in disrepair bought it off some lad for 500 bucks, never replaced the piston in the 6 years and many hundreds of hours of riding, they go forever
yea i think there is a bunch of us that has been waiting a long, LONG time for them to do some 2 stroke dirt bike engine content. Lets just hope this is the beginning of a lot more 2 stroke content.
I've had bikes and wheelers from big reds to MX bikes currently have a modded raptor 660 and the most crazy little machine I've ever ridden was a 2010ish bills piped and jetted cr85... I've owned a ridden older 80cc MX bikes and they went good but that 85 was bonkers! When it got up on that bills pipe it went berserka... I looked up the specs after and it was rated a 28hp!! That's with the oem pipe too. That amount of power in a tiny bike like that just says hang on! I had no problem with my 200lbs. That bills pipe is tuned for a very violent powerband nothing... nothing... EVERYTHING! Take that amount of power in a tinsey little bike felt crazy. My first YZ80 had tops 12-14hp new so this cr85 had double the HP of that old YZ. To bad all MX 2 strokes aren't built with the same cc to HP ratio as the 85s, a 250 would be 60ish HP vs 48.
I had a friend with a KX80 Big Wheel growing up. I only rode it once and not far, but man it was a big deal back in the early 90s. It would be pretty cool to see one of these on a shifter cart. All about the 2 strokes.
Cool video and great find on those kx 80's.have you guy's thought about individual microphones? I have a hard time hearing some of your conversations when your to far away from the camera.

Hey John, that kick stand deal works by putting the short peg into the center of the rear wheel, supposed to fall out when you stand the bike up and fall away.
Really enjoy the videos of bringing bikes back to life, especially 2 strokes
when you were revving it sounded like it idled down quite quickly, from experience this is an issue where the main rod bearing is about to fail. great content, I'm looking forward to the builds you guys come up with these engines!
that little guy sounds GREAT! zippy little rocket
Gotta love the 2 strokes such simple engines to work on but yet so efficient
wow I love the sound of those engines.
i had an 87 kx80 dirtsquirt!!!!! loved that bike man great video
i had a 87 kx80 as a kid. loved it. bike was lethal
Im to scared to ever ride a a 250cc I would like the 1976 KX 250 or even 400.
You guys have like the pinnacle of power two-stroke 80s from the 1980s those things are rockets on wheels I used to have one as a kid and my stepdad was afraid to let us ride it because it was too fast for us but boy did I love it I think was so fast and I could fly so high off jumps on it
Those little 80s are a blast. I had a YZ125 that I use to ride. There is nothing like riding a 2 stroke.
The two with the upside down forks are 85s...good score.
Love late 80s 90s 2 stroke dirt bikes.
Kick stand goes in the rear axle 🤙
Had 2 of these growing up man these bikes were fast fun and reliable if treated properly always loved Kawasaki's
I use to have one a 80 and 125 they were so much fun can't wait to see them done great show
Awesome video loving the content
I used to ride dirt bikes as a kid, and a few years ago I got one of these in my shop to try to fine tune the carb for high altitude, and it was absolutely nuts how much power these little monsters make. I'm sure the liquid cooling helped a bunch, since all my old dirt rides were air-cooled back in the 70's and early 80's.😁👍
1.) fender thing is a subframe
2.) 32:1 fuel to gas ratio would perform better
3.) check the reeds they may be original
4.) the clutches might be ok the basket may be "grooved"
nice find
I've stuck to 40:1 and had great luck
Steel bore 20 or 25:1..Electro fusion bore 30 to 32 :1 later (after1990) Nikasil bore 40 to 50 :1 synthetic 2 stroke oil is best always.
great to see something other than another Tillitson motor special.
I had one when I was a teen and now my two kids have one each. They rip for sure and yall need to get them all running and do a race
Kx 80s are mint no better felling than hitting that band and listening to it screaming I love em
this bike was my first bike ever im pretty sure even the same model, when we got it was in disrepair bought it off some lad for 500 bucks, never replaced the piston in the 6 years and many hundreds of hours of riding, they go forever
Finally thank you John issac and Charles 💯💯💯💯 been waiting on y’all to pull some pit bikes and old 2 strikes out yesssssss💪💪💪💯
yea i think there is a bunch of us that has been waiting a long, LONG time for them to do some 2 stroke dirt bike engine content. Lets just hope this is the beginning of a lot more 2 stroke content.
@@supertedogpriken yeah next we need a 2 stroke drag bike
Was so excited to watch this video🤙 loved it. Your wide range of content is why I love this channel.
I dig the 2 stroke builds. Wish y'all did more of them.the more you do the better y'all will get a tuning them.
I freaking love the kx85 dirt bikes they run so well ND have plenty of power!!!
There's just something about ripping around on an 80 it always brings a smile to my face
Yall have me wanting to buy up a lot of the junk I see near me. Build em to run and flip.
My first bike was a 1982 Kx80. What a ripper!
Got my first ticket on a 82 kx80
About time we had some 2 stroke dirt bike content
dirtbikes about time John... most of us learned how to ride on a dirtbike when we were kids..
Glad you guys finally got a dirtbike
I've had two kx 60s and a kx 100 and kx250 love them for life
Reminds me of riding and jumping XR 60s as a kid. So much fun!
I did schoolboy MX in the early 80s, the KX 80 was the first mono shock that I ever rode. Awesome bikes,Learn to make it sing by using the clutch!
I would love to see you guys do like more dirtbike stuff
Nice video! Totally brings me back to my teen years. and a JET BOAT update soon!! Heck yeah dudes.
Kick stand = back wheel, and please just don't get rid of the frames and extra parts sell em donate em, pple love these year bikes
That kickstand fits all of those dirt bikes fits on the back wheel where the nut bolts on to the axle slides into the round hole.
I had a friend with a KX80 Big Wheel growing up. I only rode it once and not far, but man it was a big deal back in the early 90s. It would be pretty cool to see one of these on a shifter cart. All about the 2 strokes.
Nice find 🔥 Can't wait to see one of these 80cc motors on a gocart 😁👍🏻
Cool video and great find on those kx 80's.have you guy's thought about individual microphones? I have a hard time hearing some of your conversations when your to far away from the camera.
Hey guys.. sick purchase
I have a 96 kx 80 I just finished building
I had an 87 25 years ago. FYI those little bikes have put many adults on their backs. Power to weight ratio is pretty good.
Watching this makes me remember back when I had an old kx60. Such a fun bike, way too small for me but I still loved that thing
you got $4000 worth of sellable parts! And I would love to see an electric bike/cart build!
I have one of those right now its a 1996 kx80 the power band on those bikes is ridiculous I love that lil bike ride wheels all thru 5
The tri stand goes in the rear axle not the frame, on some bikes there is a attachment for it on the swing arm.
Those things surprise you with the power band. They are crazy little bikes.
Man i miss that bike.
My dad bought me a kx85 when i was 12 i was so happy.
That bike was so fast and so much fun for it’s size
Ive been waiting for this. The best mini bike the 80cc 2 smoker
