- Today's video is on the Chrysler Sebring! This car lasted for 16 model years across 3 generations from 1995-2010, including 3 convertibles, 2 coupes, and 2 sedans. This car started out as a great deal for buyers, combining luxury and performance, but the appeal started to fall and after 2010 it was converted into the Chrysler 200. @@brotherdj777 My mother, God rest her soul, made me and my 4 brothers and 4 sisters go to Church almost all of the time. We weren't allowed to go anywhere else except to deliver newspapers and/or mow lawns. I came to sorta resent it, but if not for what I learned back then, I wouldn't know what has been unfolding in front of us now at such a rapid pace. I lost my mother at quite a young age, but she had a love and belief in God that is seldom seen, especially in today's world. I've heard many false prophets claim Christ will return on certain days and I knew them for what they were because of what the Bible says. The signs are all there. God bless.

I have an 06 that had the 2.7l with full synthetic oil only it's entire life and was definitely extremely well cared for and probably never saw an Iowa winter as it was completely rust free and the body and paint are immaculate. It has 170k on the clock and runs like a dream, I hope it continues to be reliable.

One thing was for sure: The Sebring convertible was a really beautiful car in design. Too bad the mechanics of the vehicle sucked so bad.
@Samuel Fita watch out for the charging systems and ECU problems. I visit the junkyard for parts for the 2010 Sebring I own. A lot with this engine had fires, some consuming the entire vehicle. Mine is running at 15.6 while running, supposed to be 14.2. I'm worried about a fire myself. Bad engineering, you just got lucky.
@Samuel Fita thank God. I did read about the different engines in these, and I believe you are correct on it being the American VVT engines they use here with such issues. And the only ones I saw with such fires were with these regular gas used engines here in America. I hope you and your family should be safe if with a VW or a diesel engine, for I can't see them being wired the same. If you've had good luck with this, I hope for you and your family it continues. If you're voltage reads 14.2 while running, that's good. Anything around 14.5 or higher like 15.5 like mine, that's no good, but likely an alternator or the PCM needs reprogramming. Stay safe. I always did like German engineering. My family comes from Germany, cousin lives in Chech Republic. Be blessed.

Totally. I'll never EVER buy another Chrysler vehicle again. Maybe the manual transmissions are a bit better, but those damn things are money pits. Gotta love this current trend of lazy-ass fellow Americans who can't drive a manual transmission, thanks, now so many are going away because of it. Even the Corvette only has some shitty GM automatic transmission. Sure, supposedly it's faster, but good luck with paying the bill to fix it, when that garbage transmission inevitably breaks down, from all of the rich idiots "flooring it".

i don’t think anyone will ever understand the passion i have for the chrysler sebring. to many, it seems like such a weird thing to gain happiness and joy from and to have such a strong passion about. the car i drive is all by choice. it’s not just because of the car itself, but the history the sebring name has in my life. from the day i was born to my current age (18), never have i ever seen any other car at my house besides a sebring. my mom and dad always had them and i can’t remember a place where we didn’t drive to that wasn’t in a sebring. my mom had a 2003 sebring until 2014. she had a 2010 sebring until 2017. my dad had a 2007 sebring until 2010 and he also had a 2010 sebring until 2014. everywhere we went was always in a sebring and it’s the car i’ve grown up with my entire life and now that i have one means a lot to me because of how much history the car has in my childhood and even today. i’ve always told myself that when the time comes to get a new car, no matter what happens in my life, i will never get rid of my sebring. i plan to keep it until the day i die because of the passion and love i have for the sebring.

I know this comment is 3 years old, but when I tell you all I wanted for my 16th, 17th and 18th birthday was first gen 1995-1998 Sebring you would think I was a loon.
I am still looking for one, but every time I have the money life kicks me in the teeth.
I always wondered if it was considered a rare car, but damn it’s beautiful.
I really wish Chrysler ( Stellantis?) would build the first gen again.
I have a 2007 Chrysler Sebring with the 2.7 and it's been a great car, it just turned 116,000 miles. I have to bring it to the garage to have the oil pressure switch replaced as it's leaking oil and they have to remove the exhaust and possibly the passenger side CV axle shaft to replace it. Otherwise it's been a very reliable car, I'm happy with it.

I had a 2004 platinum addition. Great car. Drove it to 245000 miles on the 2.7. Same engine no major problems.
I had an 04 Sebring sedan, it was a great car and the ride on long haul drives was superb.
Recently bought a '97 Sebring JXI. It has 77,000 mi on it and was in a major rear-end collision. The person I bought it from got it at a salvage auction and it sat in his driveway unused for a little over a year. I went down there put a battery in it jammed a tail light to replace the shattered one fired it up and drove it home an hour and a half. About less than a week later I gave it a shakedown found a brake line leaking and replaced it. And then took the car on a 800 mile road trip through the mountains on vacation absolutely no issues whatsoever. Falling in love with the car seems like a really good unit
I drove a Sebring TSi one time! That thing was a monster! Though I would've taken that chance to revive the Hemi Straight 6, it was still awesome for its time and its aged well.
Say what you want about 3rd gen Sebrings, my 2007 sedan is still my baby. Been in the shop only once in a year and it's at 140K.

The first two gens of this car were very sexy cars, and like many of the daimler/chrysler models, were ruined in the late 2000's. Great job as always with these reviews!

97-2000 LXI looked best to me
I've owned a 2nd gen and 3rd gen, and still have the 3rd gen. These were the first Chrysler products I have ever owned. The 2nd gen was a 2005 Convertible Touring with the 2.7. I owned the car for three years and it was in the shop only once, for a leaky trans cooling line. I was able to get about 34-36 MPG on highway trips. I loved it and never had problems. I traded it for a 2008 Convertible Limited 3.5 and 6 speed. It's had a couple minor issues here and there, but nothing I would consider disastrous. The top gave me trouble once, but spraying the safety switches with contact cleaner cured it. I still own it with 105K miles and do not intend to get rid of it until either I die or the car dies. As far as a convertible goes, there may be better cars out there, but this one is really the best bang for the buck. Personally I think a lot of people that have awful experiences with cars of ANY make drive them harder than intended.

6:33 Wrong. The coupe and convertible shared no similar parts. Interiors and front clip are completely different. The Sebring/stratus coupe are a Mitsubishi Eclipse
I think even he was starting to get confused between "sedan, convertible, and coupe." He probably meant to say that the SEDAN and convertible shared interior components. (ex: Later in the video, he says the sedan *and convertible* have 60/40 split fold-down rear seats.)
2004 Sebring Convertible owner here. 192,000 miles on the clock. Water pump and timing chain are often overlooked maintenance on many cars. Previous owner had this one done at 150,000 as a precaution. Follow the owners manual for less problems.

I remember the day I bought my 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible. It was one of the smoothest rides I've ever had while "cruising" on the freeway. Needless to say it had problems along the way eventually. Still, those were some good times.

I have owned a 02 sebring 2.0 i4 141 HP with 5 Speed stickshift .
This combination with the engine from the PT Cruiser was saled in Europe.

Sometimes I miss my 2000 Sebring JXI. Got it with about 80k, distributor cracked, replaced along with new plugs & wires. Still running strong to this day. Original red paint and body work were in amazing condition. I painted the chrome grill black and that did a lot to modernize it tbh. It was a nice car with impending issues. I sold it at 95k and I bet its still going strong assuming buyer did timing belt & water pump.

Made me miss my '04 Sebring conv. Was an awesome car that was loads of fun and decently quick till the transmission blew. Always worried about the oil but it was never a problem for me even at 160k miles. Sold it and bought a Ford taurus after that. Haha. Always debated about buying another sebring though. Seriously loved that car.
Know for engine fires in these via charging systems. Visit junkyards a lot, saw more sebrings, avengers, than I wanted with engine fires. Mine is overcharging now at 15.6 when it's supposed to be 14.2. wire gauging can't handle such current overload.

sherrod gee I have one of the last 2006 2nd gen. sebring sedans with the 2.4L 4 cyl. engine. I’ve never had any problems with it. It’s been a reliable and fun car.

I think the 2001 Sebring Coupe is beautiful 'til this day, especially in silver. Now I just have to find one with no rust and only a couple of dings.
I'm rockin a 98' convertible with no rust and no dents. Sitting at 105k miles, I'm surprised it's lasted this long.
I had one in white. It was a fun car. Really liked it. Had to replace the transmission once and at the end the engine was kinda sketchy. If I'd had the money and space at the time getting it rebuilt would have been fun.

Loved my 2001. No problems with 2.7 when you do regular oil changes. Tie rods not friends to pot holes though. Mechanic told me the car shared many suspension parts with the neon and was too heavy. Should have rust proofed it....engine and trans could have gone another 100k. But suspension rotted.
I've got a '06 Sebring sedan with the 2.7L. I honestly like it, reliable, runs great(you gotta change that oil regularly, the 2.7L gets bad reputation mostly b/c of people not doing that on time), and i think it's the best looking Sebring, the 2nd gen sedan(facelift).
I think most people just don't check their oil. I know two people who's blown up motors because they thought they never had to check it and only take it for oil changes. I probably don't change mine as much as I should but I do keep oil in it.
@@ebogar42 Well yea that is a very good point absolutely IMO, engines need oil refills too even if you change it yearly, especially those with a lotta mileages.
S*#t hits the fan real fast if the engine doesn't have enough oil, bearings wearing out quickly etc...it's an easy procedure, check the stick & add oil if necessary.
I guess most people just drive, and only pop up the hood when adding windshield washing fluid. Neglecting to check the engine oil..
And why not check the tranny fluid too regularly, there's a stick for that too, and for a reason. That can't be done by just looking at the the stick though, check your manual for the correct procedure for checking the tranny fluid. You gotta have the car in neutral while idling and so on(if i remember correctly(?)...the manual probably tells you how to do it. Or google it..
But MoPar trannys are really reliable IMO, still doesn't hurt to check the fluid level once in a while, just do it..
I haven't checked the manual for a while, but what's the fluid change interval for the tranny on this car..? On my car it's done once(the mileage on the car right now is only 132000 km, but the tranny oil has been changed once already). But i live in Finland, so the oil/fluid checking/changing is extra important because of the extreme weather conditions here. In a year, the temperature can go from +30C to -30C so...the cars are really under a lotta stress here...
But hey, my car luckily has a complete well documented maintenance history(only one previous owner & it was purchased new by an elderly couple over here who always maintained it on time & kept it real well, a "wealthier" couple and this was their "secondary" car, so not used every day..), and it runs well even here in the "arctic circle" so...
The (luckily rare nowadays) -20 to -30 degree celcius mornings, that are common over here(even in southern Finland where i live) in the winter, are rough on any manufacturer's engines naturally(engine oil being real stiff at startup after that kind of freezing night especially..and boy that rough mechanical startup sound in the morning stings right in the heart man, it just can't be good.. :D )...
But i (luckily) have an engine block heater installed(I'm actually not sure if mine has the one that "only" heats the engine block or the actual engine coolant fluid, the latter more efficient of course). I really don't care though what type of heating system is installed, the engine has started great during those harsh winter months especially, that's all i need to know i feel ;) But i do know that a lot of these 2.7L MoPar engines have the "only" engine block heating, i guess it's because it's hard to get to the engine block freeze plugs in these engines(?) Or in Sebrings specifically because of the way the engine is mounted or whatever..
Anyway, engine heating is pretty standard over here, but not nearly every car owner has the resources to use it, since it requires a 230 volt power outlet near the car. It costs 10€/month(for me that is, including the parking space cost), and often the parking spaces with heating are limited. I live in a 6-story building, so there's specific limited parking spaces, and luckily i got one, with electric outlet.
I can't at all estimate the cost for electric heating in a car for a person who lives in a own house..there are a lot of them in Finland though..pretty big country but relatively small population..so a lot of people live in their own houses out in the "nowhere" in the woods, so to speak.. ;D
Anyway, you just plug a cable between the car(a plug built in the front fender typically) and the power outlet in the parking lot and heat it for 2 ~ hours before startup(a maximum of 2 hours is recommended i think, i believe it heats too much otherwise, causing the oil to drain down into the oil pan too fast as it heats up, thus causing the engine starting up "too dry", possibly damaging bearings and such since it takes a while for the oil to start circulating, critical seconds there..). There's a built in timer in the power outlet thing(typically a pole next to the car with a 230 volt outlet), so you can set it to the timing you want, depending on when you start. A lot of cars also have additionally a heater blower inside, as mine, so that it heats the car inside at the same time as the engine heats up(that would be for 2 hours as well, it's connected electrically to the engine heater so both the engine heater and inside blower turn on at the same time). Hella convenient at -30C i might add, not freezing your balls off while sitting down & also usually not necessary to scrape the windows outside as the heater inside warms 'em up ;)
We bought my wife a 2004 Sebring Limited and still have it with 140k+ miles on it. I have run 100% synthetic oil since day one and other than leaking valve cover gaskets and a few minor engine parts failing the 2.7 has held up pretty well. I have done some body rust repair because of its age and had to weld repair the aft suspension cross member that was nearly rusted away and no longer available. But it is still on the road and doing just fine, the curse of being a mechanic I guess.
Year 19 of my 2004 Sebring Convertible. I've owned it 18 of those 19 years and it has been the best car I've ever owned. 155,000 miles. Last year I had to make the decision; do I start investing money into it, or get rid of it. I made the decision to put the money in and haven't looked back. It needed a new top, shocks (first set) and some control arm bushings, and the first set of tires in 10 years. I'm super glad I did it. It feels brand new again! Enjoy your Sebrings people!

I have a 2005 Chrysler Sebring 2.7, and axle issues are much worse than engine issues on this car. Everyone talks about sludge and so on but my car already has 300.000 kilometers and no engine issues apart from overheating sometimes. But I had the wheel fall off twice because of axle issues.
UPDATE: My car just died yesterday, from overheating. The gasket was damaged due to overheating. It died at 190.000 miles. The car was a lot of trouble but none of it was related to sludge.
So is it worth it to buy? Jeez

I had a 2000 Cirrus. Front double wishbone and multi link rear suspension with variable speed power steering. Threw a spoiler on from a similar year neon r/t that had matching color (you'd think it was made for the Cirrus) and the r/t rims. Bought some drag radial tires and this thing handled like it was on rails.
My father has gone trough around 40-50 sebrings(and 8 first gen 200s), because, he was a private car dealer (sells cars, but drives them daily) and the 3rd gen didn't have a single flaw. 2nd gen was OK in all versions, except the 2.7 v6(head gasket failure possibility). The first gen was OK, but he wasn't much familiar with it, as he owned only 3 of them.
Loved this video. I’m going to talk with my mom and ask her what she thinks. She’s had the lebaron, first gen Sebring , second gen, second gen with face lift, and the third gen. I want to know how it felt from the second to third gen. I remember what sold her was actually the lines on the hood😂. she LOVED those lines on that hood. Me being a child , (Whatever year it is , is my age , for example , in 2008 I was 8 in 2009 I was 9 so on and so fourth. ) my friend and I IMMEDIATELY noticed the lack of space backseat leg space from the second to third gen. It was HORRIBLE. AND trunk space! But the car felt more updated , solid and smooth riding and with the 6 speed I remember calling it a race car because of how fast it shifted. My cousin always said “auntie I want this car it ride soooooo smooth) and it did. We loved the third gen ,, so much so we looked for months trying to find a used one after she turned it in off lease. We missed it so much even tho we kept having check engine lights. Even tho it did have hard plastics and wasn’t as nice as I remember her 2003 limited convertible being , it was stylish , fast, solid, the top was eye catching in elementary/middle school, and was a 100% new feeling Sebring that I remember , since I was a baby when she had the Lebarons. She now has a 2002 Sebring convertible LXI since we never found a 07-10 with the v6. She never got a Chrysler with the 4 cylinder because she thought they felt slow. Now my first car is strangely enough a 2015 Chrysler 200 v6. Crazy how thing play out and I love love love it just like she does her Sebrings.
I absolutely adore my Chrysler Sebring 2007 Touring! I bought it semi used in 07 with 9k miles on it. I still drive it today and I am gonna try and buy another one today 08 model as my hubby can’t keep its hands off it. It drives like a dream and got me my first and second speeding tickets 🤦♀️. As for cons? That stupid plastic thing a ma jig that can break when going out of gear- it was replaced for free at the dealership but when it happened again years later, a quick research gave me a way to bypass that problem. I would say- the damn battery under the front left tire is a STUPID place to put it, so I just opt to buy a longer lasting one. Other than an alternator, and the before mentioned problems, I do really love my car. Thanks for the video! 144k miles and still running!! 🙏

I've owned a 2005 sedan since 2008 and it has served me well with over 88k miles. Aside from a belt inside the engine breaking after a few years, I really had no major problems with my car. Of course, I can't push the engine so hard when accelerating, so I'll find myself eating everyone's dust and then gradually catching up if some of the drivers prefer the speed limit or less.

I always liked the Sebring. My First car was a 2007 third Gen Sebring with the 2.0 World Engine and 156 hp. It was pretty slow, but I always liked the comfort, the styling and the features. Of course it was not a perfect car, but to me it was always reliable and I never had any issue with it (I drove it six years/180.000 km). And here in Europe it's a special and rare car, people always asking me about it.
Two months ago, I've sold the Sebring and bought my absolutly dream car, a 2010 Chrysler 300C 3.5, and it's just awesome!

I was a dealer representative on the advertising association in the late 90's and the first half of the 2000's. This period was marked by the Daimler Benz hostile take over of Chrysler Corporation in 1998. As all hostile corporate raids, the raiders were only interested in ammassing as much cash as possible. One of the first moves was to cut dealer margins. While there were still upgrades to the cars' equipment, the cost cutting was becoming evident. While this midsize car was not the focus of any major promotion by either corporate entity, it became worse under DaimlerChrysler. It was the dealer advertising associations that put together an option package for the Sebring sedan and promoted it that allowed it to maintain its retail sales level. This success led DaimlerChrysler to shift most all their advertising to the dealer associations, but the groups pretty much devolved to rubber stamps for the corporate brand advertising offices. By the later part of the decade, Daimler Benz was looking to unload the Chrysler division and 'just enough' money was put into the cars to keep them a bit relevant. The economy had turned down, fuel prices were up, and corporate bankruptcy was on the horizon. The White House 'saved' Chrysler by almost giving it to Fiat. FCA has continued scraping the bone by dropping models and only doing restyling on aging platforms and concentrating mostly on the profitable lines, but I still do not see evidence of any new model development. This is a sad time in Chrysler's history. I see the Chrysler marque barely making it to 100 years, based on the current corporate climate.
Keeping it about Sebring though, the original chassis of the mid-ninties 'cloud' cars, was a stiff fairly advanced and competitive design by the old Chrysler Corporation. It had the potential to be refined to be competitive with the imports in the hot midsize market. I think the Indepent Rear Suspension that replaced the K Car style solid rear beam axle is ample evidence. I think DaaimlerChrysler's dropping the Plymouth Breeze and Chrysler Cirrus name plates in favor of Sebring, is an example of old car manufacturer marketing as with the overuse of the LeBaron nameplate in the eighties. The change to the 200 name plate, was, in my opinion a wise marketing move as it distanced itself from the former corporate entities as well as the quality issues that were allowed to fester. In any guise, the car was a good car that had plenty of potential that was sadly not realized nor utilized.

The first generation was the best. I hate what Daimler did to Chrysler. I will be holding on to my 1G as long as I can.

I just bought the 2010 Sebring, fire car, super excited.
I've owned 2 Sebring convertibles. For the most part, they're great cars. My first was a 2002 and I loved it. While on vacation in 2012 we rented a 200 convertible. The "Transformer" top was a complete joke, taking far too long to put up or take down. Plus, it was obvious that the added complexity would eventually cause problems.
By then, my 2002 was getting pretty beat up so I was in the market for a new one. But after seeing what Chrysler had done to the 200, I did an internet search and found a clean, low mileage 2nd. generation Sebring convertible. You know a company has REALLY screwed up when customers seek out previous models over the new one.
The only issue I ever had with the engines (both were the 2.7 V6) was a water pump that cost $800 to replace.
The internally chain driven water pump, while generally reliable, is a nightmare to repair.
My current one is getting pretty beat up, so I need to replace it soon. While I will look at newer models, I have a sneaking suspicion that I just might have to find another clean, low mileage 2nd. generation convertible.
The biggest problem is that they're getting really hard to find by now.
Or maybe I'll just have to buy something other than a Chrysler.

Bought new Chrysler Sebring 2007 ltd. 3.5 liter and love it. Still drive it. Minor repairs like new tires, new battery, new brakes. Rides smooth and great driver. If they didn't cancel this vehicle, I would buy it again! Different strokes for different folks.
Used to drive a 96 Sebring JX convertible. Was a nice comfortable car, but had plenty of issues. Hitting the starter with a rod was fun, having to remove the wheel to get to the battery was not as. I miss it every now and again.

I had a 2006 Chrysler 300 worse engine, water pump and timing belt. Engine blew with only 123,000 miles
Miss my 04 Convertible GTC. Loved that thing. It had 113K on it the day it got scrapped. It never left me stranded, just got into quite a few accidents over my ownership. Wish it had ABS
Its videos like this that I wonder why i never got into modern Chrysler. On paper, all these cars seem so fun, but from my experience, long term reliability and longevity of the drivetrain and interior got me as an import guy. But seeing some of these models today, makes me want to scour FB marketplace for a cool hardtop Sebring
Out of the 10 Chrysler vehicles I've owned, all but two have gone well past 100k miles with zero powertrain issues. To be fair, the two that did have powertrain issues were my fault. The '97 Neon I had I beat to hell- that thing lived at readline every day... and the 2005 Sebring Convertible I had, had a sand particle get into one of the cylinders and score the wall.
I bought a 2002 Sebring lx conv with 8k miles in 2003. Other than the normal maintenance, it’s a great car. My daughter now drives it ... 150k miles!

I love my 2010 convertible. Best loved vehicle I have ever had. Would buyer a newer one if it existed. I have had non of the issues you mention. I will keep it until it totally no longer runs. Only issue I have is heater only blows half heat, very cold in winter. Dealer refused to fix.

I love my '05 sedan (2.4l i4, 4-spd auto) :). Though its semi-gutless, it's a fun little car and can handle a corner pretty well. It's a bit of a gas guzzler, but its comfy and quite spacious. As you mentioned, it didn't stand out amongst the competition and the sludge issue with the 2.7l v6 most likely helped with numbering its days. The 3rd gens styling didn't help with its success either. It sucks that the battery is in the front left fender, but I feel it could have been placed in worser areas. My '05 has 146k miles and still going strong :). I have replaced (or had replaced) a couple of components over the years (including the water pump which cost ~$700 because it's under the timing cover), but its otherwise been very reliable and continues to do so.

I must have been lucky. I have had my 2002 Sebring LXI Convertible since it was new and I have never had any of the issues you mentioned in the video. I did have to replace a couple of fuel injectors and radiator....that's it. I have over 160,000 miles on it...it sat out in OHIO weather in the winter...always started. Just had a new top put on it since the Ohio winter weather made it a bit leaky. Still drive it with just regular maintenance issues. I guess I just got lucky with my Sebring

01 Sebring LX, sitting at 273k miles currently. Got it from my grandmother around 240k miles, put those 33k miles on it over a year of driving.
Let it sit for the last year, just took it to get a few fixings done to it and driving it once again since I wanted to keep it for when I need to pick up anything that doesn't fit in my 07 Civic Hybrid due to it's back seat not being foldable from having the IMA battery in it.
I sure did miss how more "homey" feeling the Sebring is to sit in and how the steering wheel feels just right.
Only major issue I've had with it was the compressor seizing up and shooting metal through the tubing one night at 4am when I stopped to get gas. Filled up the tank, went to turn it on, wouldn't start, sat for 3hrs waiting for a tow only to find out the compressor had done it's thing. Replaced it but then got my Civic two months later.
Going to get the tubing flushed and whatever needs replaced for the A/C to work again here in two weeks. Want to have it last another 30k miles at least, one can only hope.
Anyone know how to fix where I have to manually go under the passenger dash and switch what setting the heat/cold air is on? That's the only thing I'm uncertain of, the dials for it don't do anything and it shoots a code for the issue on the dash, so just don't even touch those and just manually switch it myself currently

95-2000 coupe never had the 2.4L , they had the 420a 2.0L 4 cylinder similar to the Neon DOHC engine but with a head flowing in reverse , exhaust in the front , same engine in the Avenger too, Talon ESI and Eclipse RS and GS

My grandmother has a 2001 Sebring with 27k miles. Unfortunately it is rotting out, but I am hoping that it will be mine one day and I will replace the rocker panels. Unfortunately it has the 2.7 engine but it currently runs great.
My grandmother had a 06 sebring touring. It was garage kept. Had about 18k miles on it until i inherited it in 2017. Now it has 32k and im still taking good care of it. Mine also unfortunately has the 2.7 but as long as you change the oil on time and check for oil sludge and blowby and replace the water pump it should last a while. Im also thinking about getting a sebring coupe, swapping it with a srt6 or LS or something.
The 1st gen. convertible looked so nice. I remember our neighbor bought one and I just loved the design. This was the best looking convertible in that era /apart from the C4 Corvette/

I had the last one with the Mits V6, a 2000. It was a good car that I got with 80k on it. Distributor cracked a year later, replaced along with spark plugs. It’s still rolling. I sold it to start a Sprinter build out

The Cirrus we got in Mexico came equipped with a variant of the Neon's SRT4 Making as much as 225 hp for the model running from 2004 to 2010! Not bad for a car that didn't even come equiped with standard airbags.
Good information here. I loved the body style of these convertibles, but you completely describe why Dodge never crossed the finished line.

I have a 2007 Chrysler Sebring with the 2.7 liter v6. so far not that bad there is some sensors that are going wrong with it and causing a check engine light but other than that it works just fine at 256,000 miles. still found this video helpful and interesting.
I'm one of the few who actually liked the look of the 3rd gen sedan.
I'm typically not a Chrysler guy at all, except for the Viper and oddly the Prowler, but I always loved the first gens. looks. I especially loved the first 2 years. When 2nd gen. came out I completely hated it and just shook my head for the remaining years.

I bought a 2004 Sebring Touring in 2008, I really liked the car. It had all the options only had 54,000kms on it. From what I've heard about the issues as they age I'm almost happy that someone ran a stop sign and totaled it a year later lol. Probably saved me a lot of money and headaches!
I always like the look of the first gen coupe, always wanted to get one and convert it to RWD with either a SB dodge or a gen 3 hemi. Always thought they looked slick
I like the content but the narrator has an odd inflection at the end of most of his sentences that is really distracting.
I owned 2 Sebrings, 1st silver LX, 2nd butane blue Limited convertible. I loved them both! When then 2nd entered the end of life, it was only only since it was challenging to get parts. So, I got a Buick Cascada. Like it very much, but not as much as my Sebrings!
My first car was a Sebring. I once asked my dad how he handled it when his car broke down on a work day and was stunned when he told me it didn't really happen to him. I thought everybody's cars broke down about twice a year. I miss driving with the top down at night though. I loved that car when it was running.
Good to know: the Chrysler 200 convertible was briefly sold in Europe as the Lancia Flavia. In four years only about 400 were sold.
I only thing that I love about the Canada cars is that they required “Rear fog” lights on all there vehicles. He in America some cars have them and people have no idea how to use them. The Oldsmobile Aurora had them but people where not informed about it.
So, I'll toss in my massive post and ownership of these:
I've owned 2 first gen Sebring convertibles (96 and 99). I would say the 2.5 engine isn't... bad, but there's definitely some things that could have been done better. I hate the fact they had a timing BELT and not a chain like the 3.0 engine it was based on. Couple that with the interference engine design, and you had the vast majority of these things die out from owners never replacing the timing belts and ruining the engine when they snapped.
They're also picky about aftermarket parts, and you WILL have misfire issues from either the crazy distributor design, or the damned crank position sensor. They also like to run hot if you don't have the cooling system in full check. Something as simple as the overflow tank tube not venting correctly will cause it to run hot. The water pump is also ran by the timing belt, so it's not an easy task to change either.
Going past the engine, you will most likely have the electrical issues here and there. Usually the blower motor will only run on high speed, and you'll have odd electrical gremlins pop up.
Despite that horrible listing of cons, I did like both cars, and neither ever left me stranded. The backseat room is incredibly generous, and is great to take the whole family. The suspension, steering and cornering felt pretty decent too. Most of the weight is down low with the lack of a roof, so the car does feel planted. Acceleration is nothing to write home about, but it moves when it needs to. Having the Autostick option is good fun (which my 99 had).
If you do your own car work, I think they're decent cars, and definitely one of the cheapest used beater convertibles you can find. Their resale value is... yeah, not so great, but that does make them cheap to get and maintain if you check online first and get the correct parts.
I actually had the 1-speed blower motor issue on my ‘05 sedan. Turned out to be the resistor burning out after 10+ years of use, easy fix and not too expensive (less than $30). Ive also replaced the brake light switch which was uncomfortable cause its right under the driverside dash and resting on your back looking up, not fun, but it didnt hurt the wallet much (~ $10).
I agree with your comment. Resale value on these cars wasnt very great, but if you buy a car for keeps, it doesnt matter much. Acceleration is meh, but i feel like the sebring/stratus handles quite well. Overall its a good little car that does have its fair share of problems like with all vehicles. As long as you keep up on the maintenance, it will keep going for a long time. My ‘05 sedan (2.4l i4, 4-spd auto) has 146k miles, still going strong. :)
