What does a professional home theater owner have in his or her home? Now you know. And yes..it's not an acoustically treated room.
Hey everyone I finally get to show everyone my personal Home Theater. The equipment in this room tops out around $80K. I went through many renditions of this system as I typically change my gear every year however I think I am done now finally as this is an in wall pinnacle. Gear list is Focal Utopia 1000 series In Walls, Matching 1000 subs for each one. Acoustically transparent 153" Screen Innovations slate screen 16x9 aspect ratio, JL Audio Fathom 113 Dual Subs, All Klipsch THX for rears (I know they don't match..I don't believe they need to and also they are loud and I don't feel like changing them out). Parasound Halo A31 amp, Anthem AVM70 Pre amp and Rotel Amps powering the Rears. All powered and Controlled by Josh AI and Control4 for voice control and lighting control. I hope you enjoy it.

What's your thoughts on a REL T9i /REL Ht1508 that's what l have atm l was thinking of replacing the T9i with another HT 1510 but l am finding it difficult to let the T9i go as its a Ferrari red Edition and l quite like what the high level output provides to my listening, ps l only have a Denon X8500ha receiver

This is the fist audio advice Chanel where the host isn’t smiling and telling you that the product is so awesome. This guy is like “i mean its good, I wouldn’t buy it, but if you have the money to burn by all means do what you want”…like how can you not respect someone who does reviews like that? Thats what UA-cam needs ,more stone faced people that just give it to you like it is and dont cater to your feelings or if you’re gonna get offended. There’s not sacrifice on other UA-cam channels, they just tell you to buy it all and its all awesome. This dude is like “hey, if you buy it you may need to cut off the water or electric in your house to afford it…if you want water, you need a smaller screen, if you want electricity and heat in your home during the winter you may need to get a cheaper projector..it is what it is, we cant all be superstars”. That is the biggest misconception that someone has to spend a lot of money to get good sound. That’s not true! You don’t have to pay $60,000. Home theater business is kind of like detailing products for automobiles. You don’t need to spend a fortune to get your car clean. Be smart and you can have a great sounding theater without the inflated price tag.

    • @TheaterAdvice_FCAV

I never said you had to pay a lot to get good sound. Good lord people. this isn't what I sell to everyone it's what I own. I am an extreme enthusiast. I at least hope people would watch the video before making claims or comments. I pay the extra amount for the small parts past point of diminishing returns. It's just a video of what I own. I sell theaters I love for just north of $15k all day...great sound and video. If you want great you can do it for lots less..if you want extreme like I do..it costs this much. Just sharing what I own. These comments are ridiculous and by no means what I mean or even say in the video if you watch it. What I did say...was that if you want your in walls to sound like badass floorstanders...you need to go way up. Which is fact. That's the point.

I don't love that TBH but that's how the room is with the riser. I also turned those down a bit from the others. My ears are at least 12" off the wall when im watching...sounds good still. Like I talk about often...every room has some compromise typically. That's mine. I had a row of chairs in the "sweet spot" in front but I work in there a lot and needed the table and also wanted the chairs gone for a better line of sight to a large screen. Give and take.

How visible do you find the black bars to be when watching either 4:3 or 21:9 content (and compared to BlackDiamond)? Especially since a lot of films these days have switching aspect ratios, so you cant just use velvet curtains or whatever all the time.

100% helpful if you have the money for a proper acoustic design. We do it for clients. My walls are double sheetrock and green glue. Sealed door and completely encapsulated in foam. It’s dense. If you notice all the woodwork in the room I could only add acoustics to the small areas of sheetrock so it wouldn’t be worth it. I just can’t do it and enjoy the room fine but I’m 100% proper acoustics if someone wants to do it right.

Great video and perspectives. I'm considering the Slate AT screen as well.
Q1: How much space do you have between your LCR speakers and the back of the screen? There's some mixed reviews out there about how much wall space is needed with micro perf screens. Yours looks nicely flushed against the wall. Do you feel the sound quality is still pretty solid?
Q2: Your screen is huge! Looks great but SI recommends a minimum throw distance of 1.5 x image width. This may be an issue for rooms without the extra depth. Have you experienced any problems if your throw distance is not up to SI spec?
    TIA for your feedback.

What's your take on bias lighting for "better contrast and less eye strain"? I've heard it makes blacks look darker and prevents your eyes from being overly-sensitive to light in a pitch black room. But your screen seemed to look incredible in total darkness. Should we have any kind of ambient light, or is it not good because it washes out the blacks... Can you share your thoughts?

If you want a 16x9 screen that’s fine but to say 2.35 is dead is ridiculous. Actually it kinda is, about 80% of movies today are 2.40:1. There are plenty of solutions for VAR movies, like projecting at 2.40:1 just like they do in non-IMAX theaters. Use the masking feature in the projector to turn off the pixels above and below the screen. And a real screen has masking on the right and left for blacking out 16:9 pillar bars.

Hey there, thanks for the video. I went 2.4:1, but if your projector supports blanking, it solves the problem you describe with changing aspect ratios. When I setup my 2.4 lens memory profile, I can configure the projector to literally black out the areas above and below. 0 light in those areas.
End result is if I watch something with multiple ratios like say The Dark Knight, I watch it in 2.4 and when the 16:9 scenes come on I don’t even notice.
Granted, that means those scenes are cropped, but most any movie doing that, the director makes sure it can be watched in scope too without losing much artistic intent because there are 2.4 versions of the film they show in non imax theaters.
Sure it’s a SMALL compromise for a small subset of movies, but that too can be solved with a processor like madvr later if it bothers you.
My setup is in a basement space with 7’ ceilings though, so I was also more limited on height than width. I can definitely see the 16:9 argument if you have the room and if the 2.4 area inside that 16:9 frame is adequate. It really just depends on what you prioritize and the space you have.
If I was selling this stuff I would probably push more 16:9 too because the average person just wants to watch a movie and not think about all this

Totally get where your coming from, however zooming out on a wide screen playing a 2.40 movie I have no black overlap top or bottom as I crop it to the edge of the picture, that bugged me until I figured it out projectors could do that when I first got one, now I'm thinking about a panamorph lens to deal with the few annoying Imax picture jump movies I have.
99% of my films are 2.35 and 2.40 with a few 1.78 and 1.85 on blu-ray, I think thats reversed on dvd but they hardly ever get played now and as most of them are stereo or old surround sound I just use the tv to watch them and I don't game, watch tv or stream with the projector as it's part of my living room set up, plus I like using the projector for that big screen feel and don't want to lose that feeling playing everything on it.
When it comes down to it, it's always a personal thing, just like buying a car or a phone, it has to do what you want it to.
Also avatar the way of water was shot in
1.85 : 1(3-D version in constant width venues, including IMAX & Digital release)
2.39 : 1(2-D theatrical version and 3-D version in constant height venues) so that means it was zoomed in and cropped for streaming in 2D. Which is why it has the stupid thin black lines.
If an HDTV program or film is 1.78:1, then it will fill the entire screen correctly.
If the aspect ratio of a film is 1.85:1, then you will notice small black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.
Or you have a 16.10 screen not 16.9 which would also make this happen,
    Just a thought.

I’m busy building/setting up my theater and I’ve been indecisive about a few things. Just when I think I’ve made up my mind on a something, I come across a video that makes me doubt my decision again.
I have a full set of Klipsch THX Ultra 2 speakers … same surrounds and ceiling speakers as yours. The room also houses a stereo system, so I need to decide whether I’m going to place the THX 650 LCR speakers behind an AT screen or maybe use the Sonus faber towers for the HT front stage as well. I’m really not a fan of AT screens .. I can see the micro perforation, and I feel it is a compromise on sound as well.
Over the last few weeks you have managed to FINALLY convince me of (ALL of) the following:
    1. White screen vs Black Diamond. I have a 120” Black Diamond already and I’m definitely going to keep that.
    2. Aspect ratio. If I order another (larger) Black Diamond it will also be 16:9 … I was previously considering 2.33:1
    3. I’m going to run a Sonus faber front stage … already bought the new Homage VOX center speaker. (previously wanted to keep the option of switching to Klipsch, just to have all speakers “THX Ultra2” … now the installation is going to be much simpler.)
Wishing you all the best with the channel. Very proud to be among your first subscribers.

Folks, you can do way more with way less money if you get your room right. Absorption, reflection, and diffusion. Rather than spend 50K on speakers, spend 30K, hell even 20K, then another 10K on acoustics.
This is why MOST folks can’t hear their center channel.

Heck I'm planning 7.4.6 and I can do that for under $10k

Rock out. Number of speakers has NOTHING to do with price at all. It's quality. And 11 in this room might be too much. I'd bet that many is too many in your room as well. That's just stats. You get no separation. Proper design over trying to impress. But what do I know..just the 45 national magazines and awards. I can buy a car for $8K too...don't want to. Not sure why you even said that. Anything can be obtained for cheap. I'd like to see how you are doing that though. Used stuff? Just the processor is half your budget.

@@TheaterAdvice_FCAV well, at $80k I would expect the processor to be on the level of Storm Audio or Trinnov Altitude, which can do 30+ speakers.
My room is 20 feet in length. Easily supports 6 height channels, especially when you set it up as Front Height (30°), Top-Middle (90°), and Rear Height (150°) which would put 8 or 9 feet between each speaker pair. Plenty of separation in the height plane.
As far as vertical separation, I would prefer 30° between the ear level speakers and the front and rear heights for stereo coherence when using Auro3D. 30° is better for creating a taller soundstage where that coherence breaks when you go above 45° (where Atmos likes to start)
Also in addition to that, DTS:X has a preference for height channel labelling. When you have your upper channels labelled as Tops, it tries to image sounds between the ear level channels and the Top channels which degrades some of the immersive nature of the playback (precedence effect might kick in). So since I am inclined to use front and rear heights, which would leave a 120° gap between the front and rear heights, adding a Top-Middle pair bridges that gap and helps anchor ceiling channel sounds directly above the audience.

@@TheaterAdvice_FCAV a Denon X6700H is $3000 and can do 13 channls. Also a Sony 7000ES is 13 channels as well. Planning to get the Denon. Already have most of the speakers. My height channels will be bought used because the speakers I have are long out of production (Infinity Primus, Harman brand). Planning to use 4 subwoofers at the $500 price point, so $2000 worth of subs total. Dont really play at reference so I dont need JTR subs or even big SVS subs. I want 4 subs for even bass response to all seats (two rows)
So $3000 for processing. $2000 for subs. Maybe $2500 in amplification (eventually will externally amp all channels) maybe another $500 in speakers and $2000 for a new 85" display (I'm a flat panel guy in love with HDR. plus lack of light control in the room a projector isnt a good idea in my case)
Should be around $10k give or take.

@@FURognar Sounds like you're killin it all on your own. You keep designing your somehow magical Harry Potter 13 speaker theater with what I spent on my Center Channel...and I'll keep designing and spending my money where it matters most. You are going on "research" I can tell ...where my advice comes from 25 years of industry leading experience. And I mean that with all the respect. I know what matters in real life not what graphs and "youtubers" talk about who don't have all together as much experience as me and my staff. Also if I added a $20K processor i'd be at $100K. My room at retail believe it or not is well over $80K...I was rounding up. I spent it on amps, subs, Fronts, screen...the things that if you watch all my videos I show to matter most. the processor in actual sound quality (all the while having HDMI handshake issues, update issues etc) would be a 10% bump almost nobody would notice. It's perfect and balanced. I hope yours is too....somehow for $10K. Keep watching if you'd like. I might be able to help. But your comments and your perfect placement of speaker knowledge you can google means nothing to me.

I thought this was going to be an interesting video... but even on 1.5x speed, it was still dragging on & really didn't teach me anything of value. I realise I haven't watded it all & I haven't seen any of your other videos to know whether this 'long format' is normal. Cheers.

To be honest with you the long format is because UA-cam wants to see videos watched over 10 minutes, so I just have to talk for 10 minutes lol. I’m going to be doing some shorts but I don’t know how educational they will be. My other videos are more for that. This was just a show off my own personal room. You definitely should watch the other Contant. I will not be jumping around or acting like a cartoon character like the rest of the UA-camrs. So if you’re into that you will not be into me. I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. But I hope you stick around and let me know if you ever have any questions. I can be a technical as you can imagine. I’ve just gone away from that part of Sales because I don’t think people care.

Pleeez get a better videographer! Your content is great, but his or her constant twitchy panning at every second with the cam is super irritating! Learn to use a video cam and not use it as a POV.

@@TheaterAdvice_FCAV that’s kind of crazy. I would’ve never expected you to use that projector. The JVC ones out and almost every single category. I am assuming you made that choice because of the brightness.

@@filmstylehd that's it yes. And I actually like the epson quite a bit. Tons of detail and bang for the buck. I did just like I say in my videos too...screen first. I needed the 3000lm. I game. I watch with lights on a little and it's big. Also full disclosure... the hole is the back of the room would need to be rebuilt and I am not interested. I have owned 5 JVC in a row...just never bright enough. All the things that "win" over Epson are little nit picky things I don't really care about. Hope that helps make sense.
