My List of Best Home Theater Demo scenes. Best Music scenes. Best Dolby Atmos scenes. Best Bass !
This is a long time coming. I am sorry it's 30 minutes but also not sorry. Took 6 hours to make this list and put a lot of thought into it. After doing this for 25 years I have heard some of the best demos. What I hear at CEDIA doesn't always impress me. There are so many hidden gems. I really hope you enjoy this video...if you don't...oh well I made it anyway lol.
It's broken out in Best Atmos Demos, Best Surround Sound demos, Best Music demos, Best Movie Bass Demos. Some really cool stuff in there you may know, or may be new to you.
I also take time setting up the demo. It's so important in doing a demo you set it up for the person you are sellign to or trying to impress with your system. Set up the scene. Tell them the cool things to look for.
Enjoy

    Great suggestions! You even listed a few I haven’t tried since building my home theater. But how in the world did you miss “Edge of Tomorrow” for BASS DEMO during the first 60 secs of the movie opening?😢😢😢 FYI, you must have the 4K blue ray. Some mixes dulled the demo. Very solid list! I only have TFA on DTS master so now I'll be buying the 4k. I like how you separated good Atmos mixes from just good mixes in general. I love that you included Book of Eli and Open Range. When Kevin Costner shoots the shotgun in the bar, HOLY COW. I think the movie you were thinking of at the end was Unbroken. Such a good into scene. One LFE scene that no one ever talks about is the MUTO scene in (2014) Godzilla at 1:16. It has really good surround effects when the MUTO goes under the bridge. I demo that scene about as loud as I can handle. Since you're a SW fan, Star Wars: attack of the clones 1:06:25. The astroid scene is one of my favorite demos ever. One demo I never see on these lists is Toy Story 2, the into. Lots of bass and they include a lot of "Skywalker Sound" sound effects randomly haha. Not the 4k Dolby atmos mix, but the DTS master on the old blu ray, Disney ruined it with the 4k. I subscribed and I hope to see more of your favs as time goes on.

Going through my old DVD demo folder, some classics: Reactor activation scene Total recall, Terminator 3 the crane chase scene, toy Story 2 the buzz lightyear game opening sequence, Bad Boys 2 highway chase scene, Ballistic - Ecks vs sever Train Yard might be the highest explosions per minute clip there is, Chronicles of Riddick Landing sequence, Cradle to the Grave Helicopter and tank scene is pretty bad ass and funny, Disney's Dinosaur Opening scene & Asteroid impact, I Robot Tunnel Car Wreck, Cracking ice from opening of Ice Age, Matrix Revolutions City Breech has to win something just for the sheer number of bullets fired, The Patriot Field Battle scene, and actually not as old, but the reboot of Dredd, the gun scene when they lock the building down and fire alll the mini guns. That should keep anyone busy for awhile

    It's such a well known everyone does it scene, but the intro to edge of tomorrow is still a will it break my subs test, especially the originally DTS mix, I think they netered it for the Atmos, least that's the consensus Um, heres a good one, Moonfall, silly movie, but pretty immersive especially when all hell is breaking loose twords the end of the de-orbit. Oh The Launch scene in Apollo 13! Watched that in an IMAX at the Kennedy space center...their subs couldn't handle it lol.

  • @Antimonkat
    @Antimonkat День тому

    For music, the new Queen live aid release is insane, Freddie's vocal perice the whole room, really gives you that "I am there" magic, great mixing. Super mario Bro's animated movie has some of the craziest bass I've heard, most of the movie, but the rainbow road race especially is killer. I actually had to turn my subs DOWN for once. Twister in Amos is pretty crazy, any of the tornado scenes, there are liek 3 or 4 of them. I always liked the Scene from True Lies when she drops the automatic down the stairs and it starts firing randomly. Probably my favorite scene on the lesser talked about list, the entire Lobby Scene in The Matrix, from the time they enter the government building til they blow up the helicopter, some of the best localization of bullit hits, and pumping bass from the sound track. Honerable mentions, the mini gun scene from T2, the automatic shot gun scene Terry Crews uses in Expendables Spiderverse and Across the spiderverse both rocked the bass department from start to finish, but especially the second one, thats another movie I had to turn my subs down for, just ridicules low end for scenes that probably didn't really need it lol. I mean everone says Dune 1/2 is a must, but I haven't experienced it yet. On a personal leval I love the shockwave scene from Star trek VI when Praxis blows up, that never gets old. and of course, flassic, the Opening of T2, credits, war, initial time bubble, all top notch. I use the pearl Harbor attack often enough too, but Middway does sound better.

    It's a great material for mixed use rooms. If you have a dedicated room, you're much better off painting the walls and ceiling dark and using a neutral gain screen. Black Diamond and StudioTek 130 still have very noticable glitter effect and some hot spotting. It's like watching an image projected onto Edward Cullen's skin. Off-axis viewing is a serious problem too if you're worried about more than just the main seat. Left edge of the screen from the right-hand seat and vice versa will suffer quite a bit. The same physics that make it brighter from center-on necessarily injure the off-axis image. Also, everyone knows projectors don't emit black. Going from that to claiming that it's a lie to talk about black levels is dishonest. Everyone knows black level refers to perceived black level, i.e. when the PJ is trying to dispay black, how much light actually gets through. Put a JVC next to an Epson and tell your audience that black level is a lie, lol. Don't believe your oying eyes, people. Nothing to see here. This is some Dennis Foley level stuff.

    • @TheaterAdvice_FCAV
      @TheaterAdvice_FCAV 3 дні тому

      100% NO hot spottingin the new BD...I show it every day and look at it all day across from my desk. Used to be a problem for sure. Cheap screens have it. I have a 6000lm projector on it and nothing. Uniform lighting the entire way. Sparkle is just something that's there a ltitle on any ALR or high gain screen but I can look past it and even enjoy the extra brightness it adds. Doesn't bother me. And also NOBODY knows projecors don't make black that's why I say it. Every client is shocked when I say it because projectors literally say it on their site. People on YT contatntly talking about how projecrors have better black levels etc. JVC sends less light to the dark area sure...but it's not black. Just less light. ad I own a JVC NZ800....But the screen matters first.

    • @Zachary_Setzer
      @Zachary_Setzer 2 дні тому

      @TheaterAdvice_FCAV How is that any different from any other display technology? OLED doesn't omit black any more than a crappy edge-lit LED, but you'd be laughed out of the room if you said LG is lying to you when they say they have superior black levels. As for BD, that's awesome if the new version doesn't suffer from hot spotting. It's great that these technologies continue to improve. The viewing angles are still a huge problem. According to their own website, gain on BD 1.4 is down to .3 at 45 degrees, which is the angle from the end seats of the front row to the opposite edge of the screen if your front row is 1 screen width from the screen, which is pretty typical distance if you have two rows. The 0.8 and XL are closer to .2 gain at 45 degrees. The image ends up looking exactly as you described in your video--like looking through polarized sunglasses. I'm not knocking it for applications where it's a good fit, e.g. bright rooms, narrow seating areas, or longer viewing distances. All the benefits you listed are exactly why I demoed it for my theater. The actual results just left a lot to be desired. For my painted black room, I narrowed it down to Seymour Glacier White and StudioTek 130 g4 and went with GW because the sparkle on the ST130 drove me crazy. For a dark room, it really is hard to beat cheap white vinyl.

      @@Zachary_Setzer Uh.....tv's are black when the pixel is off...like actually black. Looking at my tv now..Black. I'ts how black the pixels are when off..Pioneer Elite "Pioneered" some of that with painting the grid black etc. But tv's are black...and have black...they are about as different as they come.

    • @Zachary_Setzer
      @Zachary_Setzer 2 дні тому

      @TheaterAdvice_FCAV They look black when turned off. They don't emit black. Therefore, the black level is determined by how much light leaks through the display when the pixel is supposed to be off. With OLED, that is zero. With an LED backlight, it may be very little or a lot. With a white projector screen in a pitch dark room, the screen looks black. The level is raised above black by a) leakage from the PJ directly onto the screen and b) light reflected off the screen, into the room, and back onto the screen. So black level is not determined by identical factors in TVs and projectors, but in both cases, the main factor is how well the display prevents emission of light. With PJs, you have the added elements of a) screen color to reduce luminance and, therefore, darken the appearance of black in the image but also reducing overall brightness, and b) ALR technologies that reduce wash-out from room reflections, but those aren't characteristics of the PJ itself. Take any given screen and you'll always end up with darker blacks with LCoS compared to LCD or DLP because LCoS has better black levels, just like OLED has better black levels than LCD, despite the fact that neither PJs nor TVs emit blackness. At the end of the day, I wouldn't have a problem with your explanation of how black works on a PJ screen other than the fact that you lead with "manufacturers are lying to you" and "no such thing as black level." Those are both very misleading statements that you should stop repeating.

       men don’t take this the wrong way, but I honestly don’t have time to argue with people on UA-cam. When a TV makes picture they turn the pixels completely off for the color black so it does make black. I run multiple multi million dollar companies. I hardly have time to make this content in the first place. I am not a UA-camr. So I might reply to comments, but I can’t argue back-and-forth. If you don’t want to follow me I am putting out experienced content. Thanks

    Thanks for sharing! I had 2 REL Carbon Specials. John and the REL team are great. My journey, however, took me to JL Audio Fathom. Much smaller box and I found them very easy to integrate. The sound is absolutely amazing out of them and I prefer the XLR low level input. I’m sure there is some value though with the high level connection that REL recommends but I’m not sure if it’s a transformative difference between the two over preference and another connectivity option.

      @@fishis14 the rel subs are smoother, just lack a bit low end. I use golden ear speakers with subs, so tuning is a challenge. The SVS have more bass, seem to be a bit boomy at times. SVS has way more output and is louder in the lower ranges. They shake my house if needed. I have the PB300’s and they are big and ported. I have the ports plugged, but the rel seemed to be cleaner. I need to work on the tuning and I have always preferred sealed, even in car audio.

    Amazing outcome! Deep pocket, too, I have to say. Question for you: In another video you said that although you highly recommend grey screens, they are a no-go for AT screens. Can you help me understand how this one works? Is it because high end (very expensive) screens can still make it work with both AT and grey?

    • @TheaterAdvice_FCAV
      @TheaterAdvice_FCAV 8 днів тому

      Correct. It's expensive for an ALR screen to be AT..like this room and my own theater. But not just Grey....Grey without optical coatings just ruins your colors. When I say Grey I mean silver and ALR ...high end screens with optical coatings. Otherwise just go white and control the light and light bounce.

    The only subs I've heard that can compete with JL Audio are the Martin Logan Dynamo series. The Dynamo 1100 (12") is perhaps more musical than the JL E series subs, but has nowhere near the low extension for movies. JL crushes SVS in my experience

    Adding an expensive power amp to a mediocre AVR. It's still going to be the AVR that's making itself known! Hence, one should try to keep things evenly balanced!

    • @TheaterAdvice_FCAV
      @TheaterAdvice_FCAV 11 днів тому

      100000% disagree..you hear the amp. Changing the electronics makes a TINY difference in comparison. The receiver is just a volume control at that point. You should change both...but this is the difference tha tmatters.

    • @totalplonker824
      @totalplonker824 11 днів тому

      A poweramps only job is to boost an output signal! Whereas with an AVR, is responsible for receiving & processing the signal. Even if an AVR is using external amplification, it's still the components within the AVR that will be responsible for quality the signal. Boosting an already established signal is basically giving one more of what ones already got. I think you might be getting confused between AVR and a processor, which btw, narrating on a video I would imagine would be quite easy to do. Always respect people who are willing to put themselves out there. Cheers

    I know you recommended the Epson PU1006 before (other vids), but I was recommended the powerlite L775 instead by an Epson dealer for a cheaper alternative that uses some of the same internal chips as 1006 but cheaper. What do you think about this the 775 for a mostly light controlled room shooting onto just a dark grey wall til I have $ for a screen. I like the LS11000 I have there now but feel it lacks some needed lumens. Thanks for the advice!

    With good design the zoom method will not make the bars visible above and below the screen. You simply need dark walls. Or a better projector like a JVC or Sony. I used this method for years. Ultimately I went your route though. I think 16:9 is just better these days with more near 16:9 content. Like you said.
