Your yellow pencil is the go to tool for so many houseplant projects. I have been using a green plastic chopstick in a similar way for a long time. I can't do without it. I lost it somehow and after hunting for a few weeks I don't think I will never find it. Good news is I think I will buy a yellow pencil just like yours. I thought I knew all I needed to know about the RT but did not know about the "variegated look" that could be a sign of edema. I have one of my plants displaying that now so thanks to you I now know what to do.
Your video makes it so clear how the plant will likely branch after cutting it back, I was looking for this answer in particular to plan where to chop mine! Thanks!
@@EverythingPlants When I first bought it, it was in a two inch pot. Just a couple of small leaves. I wasn't even sure that it was an RT. After a few weeks, it finally gave me two new leaves and they were both fenestrated. I was sooo excited. But then it just stopped doing anything, so I chopped it up and attempted to propagate it. It gave me roots and two new really small leaves (not fenestrated). I placed it in soil again, but it still wasn't doing much and a couple of the leaves died. After watching your video, I realized that I should be giving it more light (I had it in a northeast facing window) and I was over watering it (it has those markings that you talked about). I've placed it in a west facing window (I don't have a south facing window in my apartment) and I am going to let the soil dry out before watering again. Crossing my fingers...
Like your video and honesty while doing the process. I’m about to order some moss poles for mine. It was a gift from my mom bc it wasn’t growing for her. Then I got it and I swear it grew 2 feet. 😂
Perfect timing! My Rhaph is one long stem and I want to chop and prop but was unsure how, and here are you (Jeff? Geoff?) and Pickles to point me in the right direction! Good info on light too!
It's JEFF.....hahaha. Thanks for watching my video and hope you propagation goes smooth! If it isn't going well in water throw it in a perlite prop box and it should root fairly quickly.
Like I thought, great video ! Mine gets those spots and I thought it must be from watering but I wasn't sure what to think about it. Now I know, thanks to you 😊 Some of my other philodendrons are getting them as well, I'm trying to be more careful with water. Thank you again ! 😊
Yea, but thankfully no damages from it. I changed most my pots for terracotta and soil has very well drainage but it still happens. Maybe it's natural thing 🤔
I have such a problem growing my RT…I’m not sure why…it could be the soil but anyway I’ve moved it to a new location with more humidity and light…hopefully that will work. Hi pickles!👋🦴
As always, great video. I love watching you repot plants!🤪. And I always appreciate pickle’s cameos! Did you pick up that light meter from Amazon? I imagine it’s handy for knowing sake!
Yes, I got that light meter from Amazon and it 8s pretty cool to see what light you get in different areas of your house. The areas I thought were medium light were actually low light....so I added in some grow lights to help out those areas. I bought an RT in May and have to keep hacking it back because it keeps hitting the ceiling, lol. It has been one of the easiest, most rewarding houseplants I’ve grown
Yes, I will mist the burlap that have aerial roots near it and hope they latch on. I honestly found an unused roll in my shed and decided to give it a try and it is so so easy to make....compared with the messy moss lol
Thanks for all the great tips. My RT recovery mission is going not too badly, just this morning I noticed another new growth point starting. Maybe one day I'll be able to transfer it to soil.
@@EverythingPlants first, I bought a very very sad one from Home Depot with the intention of cutting it and propagating. I have some of those cuttings still. Then, being impatient, I paid $30 for a 4" pot, really cute looking and seemingly healthy, but it declined immediately. Within probably a week, it was gone. THEN from the same nursery I bought another similar one, at least the price at that point was much less. Exact same thing started happening so I cut it up to save what I could before it got too bad. I'm currently working with about 4-5 rooted cuttings, which are hanging in there nicely.
Mine is not doing so well but it is my fault I moved it to a bathroom with no windows but I did have a grow light bulb but kept forgetting to turn the light on lol. I moved it back to my living room a few days ago and it is pushing some growth. So lessened learned lol I can’t wait til grows more so I can take cuttings!
Question: I’ve tried propagating my Raphi but no progress for weeks now. 2 in water 2 in sphagnum and 1 top cutting. roots aren’t growing on the single leaf nodes in either prop method. The top cutting is the only one with progress. I’ve noticed the top cutting areal root was nice and green and this is the only one growing. The other’s have callused roots. Should i scrape the callus off the root to expose the root underneath and then try again?
I also had some issues with rooting one cutting, so I placed it in a perlite propagation box and it got ROOTS! Here are the two videos showing this. Good luck and keep me posted! ua-cam.com/video/mhf3YSLZpNE/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/HIRL54mSxs8/v-deo.html
I've had no success transitioning rhaphidophora from water to soil in the past. But I'm currently propagating again. Now that I've seen your perlite prop box I'm wondering if I should change the cuttings to perlite before attempting to pot them in soil.
You can keep it in water bit don't let the roots dry out for the first couple weeks after placing in soil. I would recommend perlite, but some people don't like it as a rooting method. Give it a try and see 👀
That one from two years ago (original video) rotted and died lol I did buy another one and have propagated all of these from that one stem (version 2 😂) Thanks so much for watching my videos and leaving this comment! Hope to see you around for more!
It’s gonna look great when it takes off. Hope the one you cut off an then put in pot doesn’t rot. For me seems if I don’t let it dry they will rot, especially Tetrasperma. 😀
Got a huge one on a pole from home depot recently and I noticed at the store the leaves have black spots on them even the new growth and some are yellowing. I haven't watered it at but to the touch the soil still seems damp. Should I repot this before it dies ? I'm so afraid this beauty will die .
I would probably just let it dry out. I like to place a fan near it to help dry it out faster. Repotting will probably shock it more. Let it transition to your home and let it dry out. If it continues to decline you can take it out and look at the roots...but honestly if it is declining so fast you can take it back to homedepot.
I have a few questions, how did pickles get her name? Your silver Dragon I think that was, it does ok in that spot. Looks like it gets some direct sun. Thought those needed indirect bright light. Burlap, I assuming you can get that from Lowes or Home Depot?
Hello Keith! We bought Pickles when she was 1 year old from someone who wanted to rehome her. The owners young daughter named her Pickles and we thought it was perfect and promised we would keep it. The silver dragon is absolutely loving this spot. It is hiding underneath the Jade plants and hoya australis, so it would get very small sprinkles of direct sunlight. No leaf burn or anything on it. I bought the burlap a few years ago to cover my young cedar trees to protect them over winter (they died anyways) so I had leftover stock. I thought I'd give it a try as I no other uses for it and I think it turned out great. And yes, I bought mine at homedepot!
Mine unfortunately didn’t live long, not sure what happened but someday I’ll get another! I see them in big box stores now but in my local Home Depot they’re really sad looking.
@@EverythingPlants I’m not sure, I have a monstera adansonii as well which is thriving but the Raph might have been overwatered at the store. Someday I’ll try again!

Another informative video. The pencil is a good idea for placing soil around the cuttings into the soil. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. The pencil is my trademark 🤣

I need to take cuttings from mine. It has over grown the moss pole by like 3 feet at this point. I love little Pickles. She's a cutie!
