- Today's tutorial is for a super easy, and fun giftable project, the French Seam Pillowcase.
You need a little more than a yard of fabric per pillowcase, and it is super easy to customize the fabric to match a special occasion or special interest. I made two from start to finish while filming this tutorial in a little less than 90 minutes, so they're pretty quick too.
The French seam sounds super fancy, but it is a pretty straight-forward way to enclose raw edges and create a seam that is super strong and a better quality than serged ones you'll find in a store.
We created a FREE printable PDF you can download on our website that you can follow along with as you watch the video. Just click on this link to grab it and get started sewing some pillowcases: shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.co...
If you want a coordinated set, like I made, you need:
- 1 yard each of two fabrics for the body and sleeves
- 1/4 yard for the flange
If you want a matched set, you need:
- 1/2 yard for the sleeve
- 1 1/2 yards for the body
- 1/4 yard for the flange

The French seams creates such a lovely finish to this pillowcase! Thank you for sharing!
Great video! I had a friend describe this same exact process to me (twice!) and it never made sense until I watched your video. Thank you for bringing me some sanity.
Thank you thank you thank you...I'm a new sewer and this was an amazing tutorial. I made 3 pillowcases tonight
Thank you for your tutorial. I have made probably literally hundreds or at least a hundred of these pillow cases I just love making them and giving them for gifts and donating them to shelters. I Love The Way you coordinated those and I never have thought of that. Even if they're going on the same bed they are just going to be so so cute. And if you're giving them to two different kids they know which one is theirs and which one is not so absolutely no fighting over their pillow cases. And they are such great quality I have never heard of any of them wearing out or splitting their seams.
For a 14x20" toddler/traveler pillow = 18x30" body, 9x30" cuff, 2 1/2 x30" accent. I've made about 50 of these smaller pillow cases for family and friends. They all love them! Pillows, 14x20", are available at Walmart for $4ish.
I’ve been wanting to know how to make these, and this is a wonderful video with great instructions. Thanks so much!
Great timing, decided just today that I wanted to re-use some fabric to make pillowcases but had never sewn one before, so thank you so much for the free pattern and instructions on video!
Thats wonderful! Glad you found our video! Happy sewing!
Great tutorial! A whole bunch a people I know are going to get pillow case sets for Christmas! I’m getting hooked on your channel!
This was the first project I did with my 9 year old great grandson last year when he wanted to learn to sew. He was so proud of himself when it was done. Didn't take us long but we did it in two sessions so it wasn;t overwhelming for him. Kids attention spans are what they are.
My granddaughter wants me to teach her sewing. She's 8, thank you for this great idea!
Love it I love your site. Pillowcases are beautiful. Thanks for all the instructions.
Thanks. I never heard of french seam before. Learned something new. Very nice seams
Its was great and i loved it. Ill get some of this fabric with kitties and the HoHoHo - ill atch again so can get thru my heavy skull. Thank you💕🥰

When I was in 9 and in Girl Scouts my project for the fair was to do a French seam and being someone that had just started sewing I was excited to know I could do something fancy 😂. I thought for sure I would get a blue ribbon but I was beat out by someone ironing a shirt.I am 70 now and still make items with French seams thank you for this video my granddaughter enjoyed it with me and she’s going to make some pillow cases.

Awesome :)
I love this and plan to make it. Is it possible to use this pattern for a king size pillow and how would the fabric be cut?
How would you make these so the prints were facing the correct way. The print will be sideways when laying on the bed the way you made them.
This is a great video. I have watched a few different ones and some place their body fabric right side up like the other pieces are when layer and also putting the flange (accent piece) on the very top of the layers before sewing together. Does any of this make any difference as they seem to come out the same.
Love these and great instructions. Do they need ironing after washing?
Thank you! Ironing would be up to you, and how crisp you want them to look when you put them on!
What is the cup you have your pins in? That looks very handy.
Have you made your own sheets from 108" fabric? Do you think it would be easy? I'm really thinking about giving it a try.
I wish you had cut the kitty fabric so the faces were not sideways
That would take more fabric. I only buy tossed fabric for my pillowcases. With a tossed print there is no right direction.
Are all the quilts behind you batted and finished? They're so thin, are they just the tops or finished and not batted?
They are all finished quilts. Most are lap or twin size, but I use Quilter’s Dream batting. It’s available in different widths, but I use the second thinnest. It makes it a lot easier to quilt because you’re not dealing with a lot of extra bulk from a thick batting.
How much fabric do you need to make a king size pillowcase?
I made a king sized pillowcase and I used 10in for the cuff, instead of 9, and 32in for the body instead of 27”. I made them for my sister and she said it fit perfectly.
@@stephaniebrennan5435 Thank you kindly!
Horrible tutorial for a first time pillowcase maker. She points randomly to things that aren’t clear which area she means. I’m a 10-yr quilter who makes extremely intricate art quilts. Watched this multiple times to the point of her rolling it up, did not make any sense!!
