    At time …. minute 7:38 - 8:35
One thing I did to be able to see the mat when citing the 27” length x 44” length was to fold the material in 1/2. Helped for myself to keep more accurate.
Have made so many of these, so fun & satisfying.
Thank you Jen, thank you Shabby Fabrics.

Thank you for this great instructional video (I frequent your channel and the fabric store); I went searching for a directional video like this because other pillowcase sewing videos ignored the directional fabric (90 degrees to the selvage) and the finished pillowcase "ain't right" to my eyes.
The only additional "heads-up" I would add is for a pair of cases, for the right side and left side of the bed. The need for the cuff and trim to be added to the left side, AND the other case on the right side, is needed in the planning.

I've made your Magic Pillowcase several times in the past. They make great gifts but confess that I make them for myself more than for others. Thank you for your very clear and precise instructions. However, today is not my day. And these are my mistakes...nothing at all to do with you. First I layered the fabrics in the wrong order...had to rip it out and start over. Then, I sewed the cuff and the body in two different directions...I'm using one way prints...had to rip it out again! I am confident that third time's the charm! Thanks again :-)

I reviewed this video and comments before cutting my directional fabric. Great instructions!
Another component that would be very helpful, as one commenter mentioned, is how to determine the pattern layout/direction if you want to end up with the cuff on the right or left side. Some of us need the visual rather than written instructions. Thanks so much for the video tutorial!

Thanks Jen for the updated “Magic Pillow Instructions”. Few suggestions: use magic sizing on the fabric before cutting and you will find that not only are your cuts more accurate, but the rest of the assembly will be easier; also after stitching the first 1/4” seam and before you turn give a press to those stitches to set the seam, for this will also aid in getting the balance of the french seam construction completed; and finally take the Clover tool and run it down the side and bottom seam for this too will help in getting that final step in the french seam construction.

Love this project… I was working on a project that had long pieces, so I purchased a couple of long metal rulers from Lowe’s…. an eight and four foot. When I used the eight foot, I used clamps to secure my place on the table and it also gave me a nice, sturdy edge for my rotary cutter to glide up against. They work great!

I have been sewing these pillowcases for quite a few years. Since they have been used and washed numerous times I noticed early on that the accent strip would wrinkle. If you sew it down before you do the French Seam, it doesn't get all caddy-wampus on you when you take it out of the dryer. (I don't iron pillowcases anymore.) Love watching your videos. They are very helpfull.

I love using fancy decorative stitching as accent on the trim piece. I also adjust its width to complement the chosen fabric. Sometimes a little accent is all that is needed, not the full inch or wider trim piece. This style is so easy to customize.

Fantastic video and clear instructions! Made this pillowcase today with my 8yo granddaughter. She could easily understand your instructions and follow your video. This was a first-time ever sewing project for her and first time for a pillowcase for both of us! We had picked out directional fabric (unicorns), but we had the material cut to the instructions of a different video. No worries. It still came out looking great and she was super happy (so was I)! I think I know what the grandkids (x6) will be getting for Christmas! So many cute fabrics to choose from! Will post the picture on your Instagram page!

Thank you so much for this pattern and instructions. I am new to sewing and I am so excited to be able to make something homemade for my adult children that they will actually use. When I was buying my fabrics everyone at the fabric store kept telling me that my fabric was directional so be careful. I didn't fully understand what they meant. One shopper told me about your website and told me to watch his video first before cutting. THANK YOU!! Without these instructions, I would have most likely messed up the cutting and would have been so disappointed as the fabric I am using is no longer available. I hope to make a quilt for next year. Can't wait to start trying some of the other projects on your site. Thanks again!!!!

You mentioned the link to the free pattern download. When I clicked on the link and went to your site the pattern still said it was free and pointed to another link. That takes you to a professionally printed pattern that you need to buy instead of one to download. Absolutely love the video though. You do need to change alternate where you place the cuff if your making matching pillowcases, one on the left and the other on the right side.

Thank you for the video, I was given some kids directional fabric so this helps a lot. One question that you didn't mention in the video and just wanted to confirm - if you want the cuff to lay on the right, you would put the main fabric with the top to the left when pinning, but if you want the cuff on the right, you would lay it with the top on the right, correct?

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  3 роки тому

Yes, that seems to be the correct answer. For a cuff on the opposite side, you would turn your fabric 180 degrees and put the cuff on that side. You can check the accuracy of this by only sewing approximately 4 inches in and peeking inside the rolled tube you've created to see if this is working. Thanks for watching! ✨ -Michelle

I like to line up all the selvages of the fabric pieces on the right and sew them together, then trim off the selvages on both sides before stiching the pillow seams. Then you can be sure that you haven't cut one piece too long or too short.

I purchased your magic pillowcase booklet. My question is how do you cut directional material for cuff?
I make the cuff with print, the border accent another pop of color and the body solid cotton. Reason for this, I embroidery name of person getting pillow case.
So I’m having trouble placing for cuff for standard and toddler pillowcases. Thank you if you can help me with placement. I use your booklet on magic pillow cases.

Hello, and thank you for making this video - it has been a while since I made a pillow case and when I originally purchased my fabric for the pillow cases I am about to make I did not know about directional fabric, I purchased one yard of the fabric for each pillow case. If I now buy separate fabric for the cuff and accent will I be okay with the one yard in turning the fabric so that the design is flowing in the correct order of the pillow? I will not be able to buy this same fabric. I could make a travel pillow, however, I purchased a standard ‘My Pillow” for each of my four grand children so that is a problem in itself. Also, where do I go to download the colored directions to make the Magic Pillow? Do you have a website or facebook page where I might be able to do this?
