A lot of them codes from that ECU would've been from the car that it was pulled out off (still currently watching). So, it was worth clearing the DTC's.

It's a scandal that manufacturers make cars that can barely last 10 years. Tho if they did last better many would not buy new ones. Car makers do it on purpose. That's why I like old bangers. Post year 2003/4 ish cars started getting too complicated.

Any swapped module on BMW's needs to be coded to the VIN using either INPA or ISTA. I had the exact same issue after my ECU swap and after I coded everything, all faults vanished. The ECU and CAS need to know the exact configuration of the vehicle to work correctly. This info is encoded in the VIN. These cars are a dream to work on once you understand how the electronics work.

I didn't read all the comments, but with the "replacement" ecu you put in, the Tamper DOT was on in the dash near the mileage (9:38). That means that the ecu has wrong vin and mileage in it. Now when the "original" ecu was put back in, the tamper dot diasppeared (18:17), so it has been correctly coded to the car.

We had one a while back, (120d), suddenly developed every gremlin you could think of- headlights coming on and staying on during the nite, locks playing up, all manner of lights randomly lightin up the dash. Never did resolve it and ended out wasting it away spares/repairs for peanuts. Best thing I ever did.

Shame about this motor, in good nick except for the brains department! Wife had a 120d MSport from new on 2010, ran it for a couple of years to 20k and traded it. Checked it in MOT checker, still on the road with 195k miles. Run a few BMW’s to very high miles as company motors, never really had any issues with them, all diesels. I have known a few BMW fleet motors that did play up with electronics and they were a nightmare, even had to get BMW UK involved to sort. Parts will fetch good money, especially the red interior. Great content guys, some spurious comments from some of he followers though! Upwards and onwards 👍😎

With this complexity you can see the difficulty of fault finding, changing components and knowing at what point to stop. At normal dealer labour rates this could make it unviable for the average owner. Rust doesn’t kill cars (as much) but electronics and modules do e.g. the need to code them etc

Batteries can be picked up for sensible cash. I was quoted £160 delivered for an OE battery from a dealer after moaning about their first quote, that was for a fairly chunky stop start battery. That was less than Halfords wanted.
If you’ve fitted a bigger battery, you’ll need to tell the car.

This is where knowledge and experience on BMW`s specificly comes into play. I see people bashing on these cars because of ignorance, i say if you want something simple and easy to work on stay away from BMW. They are very good cars but without all i mentioned above to help you are in the dark.

Hi Rob I had similar problems on a late seat, sent the ecu away and they couldn't sort it, got a full ecu kit, swopped everything, obviously miles increased and same as yours abs, traction problems, if you think about it the abs unit is coded to the donor car, so without the donor cars abs unit you can't sort it, so now I've got a good running car but all the brake problems lit up and up by 20k (!) so I fully understand how you can't sort it, only other thing I've had on bms is slack chain that causes them just to cut out, ecu keeps them running for so long then gives up, bet if you take the cam cover off the chain will be slack mate, maybe too late now tho, absolutely great videos from you and Chris.

The large problem with modern cars - luxury ones especially - are finicky electronics. The Germans especially seem to work closely with Bosch to funnel people back to dealers with specialised electronic gear and in turn buy OEM Bosch spares. Sure, that’s their business model, but it borders on extortion… love BMWs but will never buy another. Sadly.

I'm talking to the customer and he says Oh my neighbors looked at it last weekend, when I'm trying to figure out why the correct settings aren't working.
I said so is your neighbor a mechanic he says no he's an accountant and has a hobby farm he comes out to at weekends. Now that explains a lot of why it took a day to figure the mess out he created, and to get back to correcting the original fault. If his neighbor left it alone 2 hours would of fixed it if I was the first guy not the last ! Take care guys

These newer cars can be so complex. A friend asked if my 1984 Alfasud has a diagnostic port. I said 'no, it's got 6. 2 ears. 2 eyes. 2 nostrils' 😂

Lovely of them to lend you some bits, totally can relate to that i gambled recently on a MAP sensor (was only £5 used part but £60 new) to try resolve an issue that might have been a whole number of things. Got lucky first time with the MAP but i could have easily chucked 100s changing bits and hours cleaning others. Everyone I asked said it was all host of things no one said the MAP, but my gut told me the other stuff was reading out because the initial MAP reading was wrong. If i had went with what others had said id have been 100s down and many hours in with no fix. So nice to have a car you can take bits off and just try.
Allot of the faults on those Series 1 just wont clear without dealer level software and a 5min run. They are proper funny cars when it comes to clearing faults really picky. Even need to code injectors and battery with INPA software.

Too late now, but something very common on these is for the positive battery cables to corrode at the posts at the bottom of the tray that connects to the live wire(s) under the car. I'm not on about the battery posts + terminals, it's the posts in small black tubes under the battery.
The larger cable controls the main electrics, smaller cable for auxiliary electrics. Could have explained cutting out.
But the difficulty is that you've got to chase your tail looking for the solution to the possibly wrong ECU that someone has put in it. Good shout on sacking it off for a small profit

Yeah it's one of those things that may have been easy to begin with but once people have interfered with various bits you don't know where you're at and whether the "new" parts are any good, exactly what happened here. Still a good enough result and well done for trying 😀

  • @iansuefray1572

Exactly the right decision on that Rob. Speaking as an old fart, is it really progress when cars are so complicated. Pre ecu you could go down to your local breakers yard and keep your banger going indefinitely. Rust was the only thing to stop the fun.
Keep em coming, loving what you do.

@@sruk 100% agree with an older car a good s/h part is fine if diagnosed for replacement. Unfortunately someone had had a right go at it before you, and as you said it is now in a vicious circle. Shame the BMW haters are now on their soap boxes about this unfortunate example .
