The problem with his solos was that he didn't play enough solos
and that you couldn't hear him play his solos

I think Lars said it best in the SKOM documentary when he said: "If Cliff showed up today, he might not be the guy either." That's because Cliff was so good at the time and so one-off, you can't replicate it, and after becoming so popular, you might not want to either. Cliff, as tragic as his young passing was, went out on a high note before those criticisms from fans could take place in later years. It was never about "is Cliff a master of his instrument?", it was always about how original he was, which unfortunately in the life of Metallica only lasted 3 1/2 years... luckily, way before keyboard warriors ever had their say.
Funny thing is I’m pretty sure Cliff would’ve loved the direction he f Black Album and it probably would’ve been that much more mainstream sounding. With all the influences he had Metallica would end up even more experimental in their sound
@@romulocasas4906 He would have loved the direction the band was taking with Load and Reload also because he loved blues music and was heavily influenced by it.
Cliff was one of those musicians who knew the most important rule and he never deviated from it; serve the song before yourself. His licks were perfect in their placement every single time.
At one point I had the stamina of cliff but no knowledge. Now I have knowledge and no stamina

Cliff’s style is a perfect balance between great technique and awesome improvisation with something else that I can’t explain but which made him unique not only among all the bass players but among all the musicians. What a terrible loss but what a great musical inheritance for all those who love him. He’s still alive in my heart. Thanks a lot for this video

This is so right. So many people play perfect both in tempo, digitation, know zillion of scales etc etc but they are STERILE as ENTERTAINERS. The key is to be a good PERFORMER as an ARTIST who ENTERTAINS the audience and makes people senses and imagination FLY. Kudos to this vid.

As far as I can tell, Lemmy Kilmister and Peter Steele are the only other bassists that could play like Cliff did. Big RIP to all three of them, man. 🤘
Robert is extremely good and has that same energy for me. I think Cliff would be happy he's the one filling those Orion-sized shoes now.
the best way to sound like your favorite player is to be your favorite player - if you can't do that, learn their influences

The way you explain the way that he didn't want to play the same thing the same way twice and how he "wanted to bring life" to his music reminds me of how I have a tendency to not play the same thing twice
Cliff's greatest strengths always lay in supporting the song. His solos just sounded like haphazard bluesy guitar licks, from an objective POV

Cliff was for sure sloppy, not the most tight and I get a lot of crap for saying that. But I still admire his ability to be confident as well as create very diverse melody. Many of his elements are actually quite simple though. Learn your triads, and the pentatonic scale. Play that shit high up with wah and distortion and it'll immediately sound cool. It's the whole lack of any rehearsal before doing it that make Cliff special.
So when I'm playing something he wrote, I can say fuck it and play a variation of that?
Be careful trying to headbang like Cliff, that also is an art form he perfected and you will get whiplash from it. I found out the hard way.

Jim Root from Slipknot is similar when it comes to his solos. Never plays them exactly the same.

He also plagiarised so much from classical pieces. I know it hurts fans to hear this but it wasn’t obvious back then because no internet and Metal heads weren’t necessarily in to classical music. It’s almost shameless, which is ironic coming from a guy who wanted to be original he basically copied and pasted a hell of a lot classical compositions and added distortion.
Cliff hardly ever played rythm, licks or solos. He played music.

I mean this video is just cringy brown-nosing. It's perfectly possible to tab out all of Cliff's stuff accurately. There are far more complex musicians who have been tabbed out accurately.
