It actually reminded me more of Cliff's sound than Jason's. It also helps if you hit the strings really hard, if you watch footage of him playing that's how he plays.

How to sound like Jason: try your best in a band you’re excited to join and then watch in horror as your fader on the mixing desk gets gradually pulled further and further down in the mix.
The 'dirt' on the isolated bass track from 'And Justice' is a combination of fret buzz and down-picking, not an overdrive or distortion effect. The ampeg's overdriven sound compliments his bass set up, but it is not the source of the grit in his sound.
Commenting again because mine from 1 year ago was a little harsh. Jason's AJFA rig was a Wal 5 string into a cranked SVT. The Klos Apollo actually works pretty well for it. However, for the Black album and Load. He was actually using an 81' Black spector NS-2 with EMG pickups and Hazlab preamp. (Every song on the black album was the NS-2 Except for unforgiven which was a P bass. See Queensryche's Operation mindcrime if you want some additional reference for that kind of tone.) There's actually no chorus to my ears on the original "My Friend of Misery" bass track. But obviously live and stuff. (There's chorus on the intro of Sad but true.) Jason inherited Cliff's power wah boost pedal from Burton's parents when he joined the band. He used that to play bell tolls. (Along with a few various distortions, he's used the Tech21 XXL, Classic, as well as a standard red Big muff in the mid 90s. He also used flangers and phasers a lot. (King Nothing into for sure.) He never used Spector live because his sweat would go into the body and fry the electronics. (His Alembics solved this problem, but were becoming a little too heavy and a little too flashy for his evolving taste, hence why he changed to Sadowsky. Who would coat the electronics in something to keep them away from his sweat.) IMO Jason's bass writing itself wasn't too special (With exception of his beautiful melodic bits on some songs). But his rhythmic tightness, and tone were perfect for the more polished sound Metallica were gravitating towards. Also you have to be plucking at the bridge, it's a requirement. It is probably the easiest way to get closer to that sound.

@@Justice_Hammer I made some research and found out that Bob Rock said that having tried every single bass and amplifier available Jason "ended up with" with a P-Bass and an Ampeg SVT. its fun to read peoples saying "you forgot to turn off the amp🤣" cause the bass in justice for all doesnt get out of the mix, and you even ear it...and it so sad to know that jason used wal and alembic, two basses to have "the most unique" tone for my ears
Buddy I've been trying for months to get his live tone from 91-93. TL;DL: Boost your mids, play with a pick and play aggressively, play with new steel strings, run a compressor, and pick just in front of the bridge pickup. He used Ampeg SVT-2 heads. He had the graphic eq on them set with the 2 lowest bands slightly cut with the mids boosted and the treble flat from what I can tell. He also used LaBella steel roundwound strings and Dunlop Tortex 1mm triangle picks- the blue ones. But here's the kicker. He used Alembic basses live, which he ordered with their Series II pickups and electronics. Basically their top of the line package. Which had a built in low pass filter and q for each pickup. The 2 pickups are active single coils, with a dummy pickup in between as a hum canceller. And as if trying to get a hold of an svt-2 non-pro wasn't hard enough, used series 2 Alembics are pricey to say the least. So my advice, find a good eq pedal, get a pack of the triangle picks, order some LaBella strings, boost your mids, downpick fast, hard, and alot. Also pick just in front of the bridge pickup. It looks like he favored that area when playing live. You can find the SansAmp BDDI for pretty cheap for his dirtier sounds. And for his bass solos with the "My Friend of Misery" segment, to me it sounds like he just used his Boss flanger. Last thing is that I'm pretty sure he used alot of compression too. I've gotten relatively close with these methods (aside from having an alembic and an ampeg head). Hope this helped!

He was quoted saying he used it on Load. I think can hear it most prevalently on The House That Jack Built and Hero of the Day in conjunction with a fretless bass.
Even the wah not being that good on the zoom pedal, I think you should have played it. Anyway, excelent video! May I suggest you to do one on Billy Gould, from Faith no More, specially on the real thing album. Excelent bass tones there. Cheers, mate!

Loved the video! it would be great if you did Troy Sanders next.
Yup Jason and Rex Brown are the best Southern Rock/Metal bassist of all time.
Finally some Jason tone to use my new Spectors with. So, can i be the millionth customer to request a Justin Chancellor tone through the ZOOM B1 Four? (not the X) and possibly MCA's tone on Sabotage?
Was the edgiest member of the band 😎🤘
its fun to read peoples saying "you forgot to turn off the amp🤣" cause the bass in justice for all doesnt get out of the mix, and you even ear it...and it so sad to know that jason used wal and alembic, two basses to have "the most unique" tone for my ears
any tips on getting his 1993 live tone?
I’ve Been lookin’ 4 a video of how to sound Like Rob Trujillo! When will u guys bring to us? 🔥🙏🏻🔥
I think about the only thing that you didn't mention is how he plays. He picks really, really, _really_ hard.
Great videos brother!
I’m really a HUGE fan of Geddy Lee’s Wal tone on Power Windows and Roll the Bones & Hold Your Fire… any thoughts on how to get this tone without buying a $6,000. Wal.
How to sound like Jason Newsted on the album "...And Justice for All":
Bass:6
Mid:7
High:4
Volume:0
Bro is fighting for his life on "Blackened."
Thanks for the video. I kinda wonder however, about the purpose of this Video waving the Zoom B1X FOUR into the audience faces every few minutes. I also have my favorite FXs, Pedals and gear, but from you i'd expect more variety of settings, creative thinking like: "wait, how did they do this without a Zoom"
I address this in my Krist Novaselic video. ua-cam.com/video/uXRhSm2zNn4/v-deo.html
Why can't I find the Cliff Burton video?

What are the amp settings?
Hi in what songs did Newsted used the MXR phase 100 pedal? Thanks
The King Nothing bass intro has flange on it
@@kevingivens5083 flange =/= phase ?
He was quoted saying he used it on Load. I think can hear it most prevalently on The House That Jack Built and Hero of the Day in conjunction with a fretless bass.
LOL, the sound of silence
Would be nice to have a video like this for Dave Ellefson type tone
You might be in luck very soon.
Check out how filthy Ola Englunds bass tones are that he does on his solo tracks.
That quick intro actually sounded good with bass....😅
Even the wah not being that good on the zoom pedal, I think you should have played it. Anyway, excelent video! May I suggest you to do one on Billy Gould, from Faith no More, specially on the real thing album. Excelent bass tones there. Cheers, mate!
My precision bass has Passive EMG's not the GZR set but the normal HZ set I can get the Newsted tone if I wanted to but I play mostly in C# standard.
Jason is talented person and smarter
does the effects you use on the zoom b1x four work on the zoom G1x four?
Nice vid! But you missed a huge part of the Metallica/Newsted technique.
Alternate picking is a big nono, you must use downstrokes to get the right sound/feel (unless it's really fast like Whiplash)
in what order should we create the patches please ?
Could you do a video of how to sound like John Deacon of Queen in the first years (1971-74)?
I love Jason’s attack. Terrible that his bass lines are buried on AFJA.
David ellefson next
Find the feel my guyyyy
It's a bot funny of how close can I get to the AJFA tone with my Yamaha TRBX305 and an EHX Hotwax :D
Awesome video!! Please make a video : how sound like Henkka Seppalla from Children Of Bodom, the bass line in the song If You Want Peace Prepare For War is just so good!!
Or how to sound like Machine Head in The Blackening Album Adam Duce is a God
Great suggestion
@@LesconseilsdeDamien-officiel also great suggestion 👍
