Since I recorded this review a few months ago, Dangerfield now make these lock picks in 0.6mm (~0.023”) which are a little more slim than these and will better navigate tighter keyways. Link in the description.
Dunno if this helps but we got both of these kits, very much when they each came out. They both have a rough looking case but it does the job well enough. On the fatter set I have, the Bogota type picks are very smooth and tidy; the opposite to what you have here. The sinusoidal ones on that kit are a little rougher but, if it fits in the keyway, they all work nicely. I've had the 23 thou version which we got when it came out and I had terrible luck with it. It hangs up on pins and the finish is rough on all but one or two of them. After smoothing them out, I'm sure they'll be as good as the thicker ones (I'll get round to it; my workshop is in storage) but there's certainly very variable quality control when it comes to the finish and I think the earlier ones were a bit better. That being said, the pricing isn't bad, they're easily smoothed out and they come with me (alongside a custom kit with tensioners and SPPs) when I need maximum options and low profile. I'd class these as niche and I expect low volume. Which means skipping the finer polishing steps probably makes a massive difference to the cost.
Yeah, we buy a fair bit of kit from Chris. Got some great advice from him when we were setting up the business and recently, we had issues with a Kronos. I'd no experience with this particular EPG but it was one of the few companies I felt confident going "this is a video of what's happening, it doesn't seem right to me but you're the experts, please advise." That kind of thing is an excellent test of a company's attitude towards customers and I would have trusted the response. The sent a battery for troubleshooting, then took the unit back, sent a new one, refunded postage and let us keep the spare battery they'd sent for testing. There are two companies for lock kit that I really like; Law Lock Tools and UK Bump Keys. Both are first port of call for kit and it's because the owners are accessible, responsive and trustworthy. I don't mind if I spend a bit more if the backup is there for £200+ of EPG, but UK Bump Keys have really aggressive pricing as well. (damn they should pay me for this)
A nice, honest, review. As some other folks have noted in the comments a EDC kit with seven similar rakes isn't really a thing most people need. I think I'll wait 'til the British Pound finishes its free-fall before spending some of my American Dollars on this kit. Chis is a good designer but I have to question the reason for this kit. Nice vid as always. Ash.
Yep. Dump the quad boga, and add a city rake. Don’t sleep on the city rake, people! There’s a reason that thing has been around since the Paleolithic era.
I guess there is always room for improvement with specific kits. We can add our own preferences. I think you covered just about everything there, even down to magnetised picks. Agreed a little more in the range of tension tools would be a great thing to include. Awesome review LN ; )
The two quads are not the same, they are very similar, but get a decent micrometer on them. If they are after that, tell them, it could be a mistake and they will replace them. They're good people.
@@LockNoob With the danger of friday night drinking I ordered the Polaris kit and got it for 60 quid ,so a quite productive drunk buy of a dangerfield product lol
Unless I am misremembering, the four non-bogota picks are the same profiles as the TOOOL/Christina Palmer rakes, so it's not too surprising to see those together.
Have you seen the new set from Grim Workshop they look like they were designed by someone that know what they are doing. They've also got a kickstarter for a whole set of "escape and evasion" cards.
I find a pocket set very appealing, but I never travel with picks so it wouldn't really help me. I just waaaaaant it. :-) Maybe I'll put that on my xmas suggestion list.
I'm not a fan of the "nano" picks, I'm not a spy and don't need to be discrete. However, I do like the compact nature of the set and case. That being said, I do have a couple nano picks hidden in my phone case just because I can, lol. I don't expect to ever need them. Especially since I've got the Sparrows Hold Out Keys on my keychain!
A pocket-sized kit with 7 extremely similar rakes is an odd product. An EDC pick kit should aim for a reasonable degree of variety to cover multiple use scenarios.
I mean it's a bit odd but it does fill a niche I think, there are people out there that really only practice raking so I think this is aimed at those people
As a relative newbie to this art I am always seeking the advice of experts regarding the choice of tools to purchase. In your opinion if you were looking to purchase a set for yourself which company and where would you purchase it? My Grandfather always told me that if you wish to learn something use the best tools possible as it makes learning so much easier. It's difficult to find someone to tell you straight out but I'm hoping you'll give me some well needed advice :) Thanks!
@@tomhurst4482 I’d concur with that. Absolutely. I think this advice would also hinge on a couple (at least) things. Are you buying sets or individual picks? And are you in the US or Europe or somewhere else? You should be able to find any set you need at Sparrows. It won’t be insanely expensive, and their quality is first rate. Another option: Dangerfield Praxis is an excellent starter kit and you get dual thickness of all the common profiles. You’ll need to beef up the handles though. Of course Sparrows and most of the others offer single picks, but there are also a lot of good brand options for individual picks. I would recommend Southord as an option if you are in the US and looking for some basic hooks or common profiles (their website isn’t great, but nobody’s is). Watch Petersen for sales. I’ve never found their picks to be all that great, especially at the prices they charge. Not bad, just never went out of my way to choose there stuff over others. Multipick is really proud of their product, so you end up paying a premium, at least in the US. They are truly top of the line though, so you get what you pay for. I only own two Mulitpicks. They are designed by some guy who goes by Lock Noob. I think he’s from one of those countries where they like soccer.
Only want to share my experience all this years with rakes the most successful Rakes are: sparrows:worn rake, Bogotá triple pick, snake rake. multipick:aggressive triple pick, lock noob Abona and teylu for rocking. tool: waves rakes. madbods: queen and king locklaw: typene rakes stuff like nessie or medusa for noob i forget the bigger octorake sometimes you only insert this amazing rake and the lock fall into falseset very quickly very useful for this nasty trioving locks.
hello friends in my experience dangerfiel rakes are too sharp. the case is nice because is imantic or magnetise. but very bad quality material my conclusion dont buy dangerfield polarys Rake set.
Ummm No easier to get a jackknife all in a 1/2 inch by 4 inch long hang from your keychain total cost 35 bucks had mine for years btw folks if you don't have a dba aka assume name when the cops stop you and say they Fi d any lock pics ? You got jail so if you own any set have a dba.

all lock pick sets have male and female picks and are attracted to each other buy the magnetic personalities. great revue
The guy who’s behind these has a fantastic UA-cam channel, he’s a great guy, Chris Dangerfield.

City rake would be a good complement to the kit.

That's a nice little pocket kit. I carry around the micro sized Sparrows picks in my wallet and made my own sparrows set. I love it.

could definitely use a hook or two and another tension tool. top of keyway tool would be nice.
I have this kit, won it in a giveaway. I enjoy them! BUT. Why are there duplicate of the quad and quint?
I got my set 2 days ago, rakes stick to cover due to magnet, 2 quads are the same, the bogey worked on my #3

Good review I think these are of more use to locksmiths who tend to use more rakes on euros rather than padlocks.
