Southwest Airlines 737 MAX 8 Stormy Takeoff from New Orleans (MSY)

  • Stormy morning in New Orleans and the weather actually worsened while on the ground in MSY. Enough time for a snack and it’s back on the same acft I flew in on. Different flight number as I take this MAX 8 over to Houston Hobby Airport. This was an east departure and right turn out over the lake and city but any and all views were foiled by cloud cover and storms.
    --------------------
    Date: April 17, 2021
    Airport: Louis Armstrong New Orleans Int’l Airport
    Airline: Southwest Airlines
    Flight: WN859
    Route: MSY-HOU
    Acft: Boeing 737 MAX 8
    Reg: N8728Q
    Seat: 6A

    I have flown 200 times or more in my life, from cessna 150 to a C5A Galaxy and everything in between. Also 166 skydives. This kind of view never gets old, what a great start to this flight. it gave me chills just watching it. It also looked very smooth, meaning not a lot of turbulence.

      I had this same flight crew for two flights. Dallas to New Orleans (prior for this video) and then this flight to Houston. When we landed in Houston he made a joke about changing the brakes on the plane. Coincidentally enough he was working a flight I was on a couple weeks later also, from Dallas to Ft. Lauderdale.

    Just recently flew on one of Southwests new max 8s definitely a quieter takeoff and a much improved cabin experience with the awesome new interior cabin lighting also better aerodynamics because of the upper and lower winglets.

      @@AListFlierKris This is the same on the Neos. Doesn`t mather if it is the GTF or the Leap, both need approx. double time to start than the old V2500 or the CFM56.
      I did not fly on the Max until now, but the Neos with the GTF are extremely silent. The Neos with the Leap are much more loud during take off with and awful noise like at the dentist. From your video I think the Max has the same screaming noise, even the Leaps have a bit different power rating and engine design.

    • @AListFlierKris
      @AListFlierKris  Рік тому

      @@timoswindowseat7045 yup and yup. cold starting isn't as bad, but if you're in a turnaround after a flight, the motoring phase takes even longer. At some stations now, provided there's enough taxi time SWA will start #2 and begin the taxi then start #1 while moving. The LEAP (1b at least, I've no familiarity with the 1a) has an overall lower maximum operating RPM. The 1b, as similar to the cfm56-7b has a similar scream/buzzsaw noise from the IDG at high power settings. it just not quite as harsh as the cfm56, in my opinion.

    • @timoswindowseat7045
      @timoswindowseat7045 Рік тому

      @@AListFlierKris BTW, you ever fly something else than the 737 and SWA?🤣🤣
      Yeah, but even the cold start takes much longer than the start from the old CFM 56. I thought that this thermal problem exist only on the GTF but seems the Leap has some sort of same issues.

    About 25 seconds from thrust until rotation. 🐎 power. NO to Houston is only about 400 miles by ground. I'd imagine it was just an arc flight. As soon as you reach max altitude you start right back down. I remember DFW to Jackson Mississippi was only 54 minutes. About the same distance as this flight.

    • @AListFlierKris
      @AListFlierKris  Рік тому +1

      You can do it both ways. sometime I hold the camera freehand but often I use a small suction clamp on the inner window as I'm also taking stills with another device. I know a couple of channels who do it all freehand and it takes a lot of practice and eventually muscle memory to keep it steady. Image stabilization in the camera helps a slight bit. If you've ever watched any of Skyline Productions @sla31 videos, he does them all completely freehand and they are very impressive!

I will be honest, I rarely do. However, I know them like the back of my hand, I know the aircraft like the back of my hand. I count rows from when I enter the L1 door to where I sit and then how many rows forward or aft to the nearest exit, left or right. The ones who'll be litigious after an incident are the ones disobeying or ignoring the briefing in the first place.

      @@AListFlierKris I agree that most people, even infrequent fliers, Don;t pay attention. FAs are the “first responders” in an aircraft emergency. I’d prefer the FAs be taken more seriously. I don’t think I;d follow the Amy Schumer of flight attendants in an emergency. I’ve had people talked about funny FA safety briefings and they’ll tell me the punchline and without context I have no idea what it refers to. I’ll ask them what safety element the punchline related to and they have no clue. Yes it gets people to pay attention but it makes them super attentive for the joke that they miss the overall message.
