Thunderstorm Takeoff! United Boeing 737-800 scary departure out of Chicago O'Hare

- Опубліковано 25 сер 2021
- After some storms rolled in, there was a ground stop at O’Hare and our flight was delayed an hour. The storm calmed down a little, but there was another storm on it’s way in so the pilots made sure we got out of there fast, and in the meantime I got some exciting shots of lightning strikes and the chaos of ORD in a ground stop which you’ll see in this video. Enjoy!
Also check out ALB Spotter’s footage as well!

Takeoff at 18:53
Takeoff roll starts about 18:13-14 rotates at 18:54.
Can't believe I sat through a 15-minute taxi for that.
I love the sound of those engines as they spool up for takeoff.
Same here!
I love it the way he sounds
OMG! Me too! It gets me even more excited for the trip and start feeling the adrenaline

I came into Atlanta out of Frankfurt Germany on a Lufthansa DC-10 once in July and it was pure hell. They had to close the airport it was so bad. We circled for about 45 minutes and those were the longest 45 minutes of my life. We were rockin and rollin for sure. We dropped once and it felt like we hit something. I guess the wings lost lift and when they caught lift again was when it felt like we hit something. The nose was pitching up and down, we were going side to side, rolling right then wings level then left, then back, hail started to pound the plane and the noise was deafening. The lights went out briefly but the continuous lightning kept everything lit up. The clouds outside were as black as midnight. The engine's were spooling up then down as the pilots adjusted for what they needed. I had to catch a little carry-on bag I had in my lap that went airborne several times. The luggage in the compartment underneath us was hitting the floor under our feet. People were crying, screaming, praying and some seemed to be in shock and I'm pretty sure the next passengers had to put a plastic bag on some of the seats. Then finally we were on the ground. Holy God in Christ I have never been so glad to be on the dirt. I hope I, nor anyone else, ever has to go through that again.
You must have came in the afternoon.
And they didn't charge extra for that fun? 😂
Ha, ha,ha…🙄
😮😮😮😮😮 no thank you not me 😮😮😮
Gosh ...if was me i would hice under tge seat...last September i went from London to Lisbon and after half hour into the flight we had Turbulence for about 15 minuts..i got so nervous i nearly pissed myself..it was awfull..
Looked like a smooth take off and flight to me, with storms and clouds in the area.
I know right? I remember taking off from Detroit in a snowstorm. That got hairy cause you could see ice crystals hitting the wings, but the aircraft had been thoroughly de-iced. So yeah I'm like ho hum.
@@CheerfulApron-sx9gh flown in snow too, steamboat springs Colorado. Ice is the issue.
We took off from Philly on a cold, dark winter day. We were seated in the middle of a packed plane. We de-iced and sat for a while. We de-iced again and just as we took off it started snowing hard! I could see snowy white streaks whistling by my window as we lifted off. This huge Airbus seemed like it was struggling to gain altitude. We were getting tossed left, right, up and down. I told GOD if he could get me through this flight, I would never fly again. Just as I finished my prayer, we broke through the clouds to a beautiful sunny view with all that snow and darkness below us. We all applauded the pilots. The captain came on the intercom and apologized for the “little” bumpy ride. He was calm and cool like this was routine for him. We just laughed.
Yes … they train , train and then train some more !!! ‼️🇨🇦
19:00 I don’t know what’s more therapeutic. Hearing jet engines spool up or hearing a boat with a V8 engine in the distance while fishing in the evening. I love my engines. Boats, personal watercraft, aircraft, cars, you name it.
Ah, the O'Hare airfield taxi tour. As a Chicagoan, I've endured it many times.
Wandering Around infield for over 10 min .
Yep! Same here!
Detroit was the same way 15 minutes taxiing to the runway.
Yes seems like the taxi part last longer then the damn flight 😭
Thought they were driving to their destination
Glad you got a capture of active storms in the air. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed!
Beautiful take-off... anything but scary
Nice wing. This gives a whole new meaning to the term "holding pattern."
I know some people are scared of flying. But it really is safe in general.. As long as the pilots are experienced and the aircrafts are well maintained. In general you don't get a pilot's license out of nowhere. Sometimes you can, but not where I live. You have to prove you are able.
Ground stops at O'hare are so fun. Once when I was there they had a ground stop while we were taxiing. We sat there in the plane on the tarmac for 4 hours before taking off. Then when the stop was lifted there were 20 planes ahead of us. So it took almost another hour before we could actually take off. That was one of the longest delays I have ever had.
I was a flight attendant - I had delays sometimes 3-4 times a day. . . . I had long duty times and then a short layover in a noisy hotel. I've landed in snowstorms and after a long day of dealing with weather problems, we were all exhausted including the pilots. So, what's your complaint?????
Thank you for keeping your cool, flying through those cumuliform clouds and for sharing!!!!
Thank you!
Two things I noted and I give the man filming this a serious tip of my hat for his patience and steady hand, phenomenal job well done Sir !!!
1st: This has got to BE one of the LONGEST TAXI's I've EVER seen and that includes experiencing them myself. This one has my longest taxi beat and I'm wondering if it should be a new, official record, LOL !!!
Seriously, if it's not, it should be and applause again for the filming patience.
2nd: Another "Tip of a Hat" to the Pilot at the yoke on this one. WOWZA, smooth, text-book perfection take-off, ascent through and above the edge of that madness, and I'm sure was a very specific window of sky-room for the least bumpy path. PHENOMENALLY AWESOME JOB by this Captain.
I was on the ground watching this and getting nervous so it was REALLY VERY NICE to see all of this done so very, very well. I ALWAYS want EVERYONE safe, no matter where you are in the world, everyone safe. ❤
Thank you! O’Hare gets crazy with taxi times haha
We sweet talked the pilot into stopping at Taco Bell for us.! It was just a bit off the flight line. 🎉❤🎉
What a beautiful sky!
So jealous!
That’s my favorite spot to sit!!🇺🇸✈️💯
That was one hell of a long taxi!!
For sure!
Coolest feeling is the push into your seat and need to add just a little bit of force forward to look out the window, all when the engines reach takeoff thrust
Fun fact… pilots call cumulonimbus clouds Charlie Bravos.
Very nice video and I love the thunder and lightning. Exciting. 😊👍
Thanks for the great video, never fun flying through that stuff, t-storms can be unpredictable
For sure! Thanks!
That’s why they don’t fly into a thunderstorm
It’s because pilots are going to lose visibility
Wow such a long taxi to takeoff. Sometimes it’s like they are almost driving to your destination 😂great video. Craig - Australia
Thanks Craig!
Wow. 19 minutes from pushback to takeoff. Not real familiar with O'Hare, but a few years ago, I flew through there to and from where I was going. The takeoff and landing taxi times were god awful long. I live near Denver and the taxi times at DIA are usually a third of O'Hare.
Wow I Love Those General Electric CFM56 Turbofan Engines Starting Up Cool Lightning In The Background
GE was sued by the families who died on AA when they dropped an engine and crashed into a trailer park.
@susanshew2373 And that's Pertinent, HOW?
O'Hare taxis are always fun to watch!
Right!
19 minutes taxiing infield. ORD is special that way lol.
Wonderfull flight, it looks so stabil thats the best for me.
I flew into Florida one evening and the turbulence and lightning shook the plane like a toy! Now that was scary, all and all this was a pleasant take off!
I like the idea of getting on a plane and then leaving a stormy area in quick order.
Very good, smooth takeoff and climb!
Nothing scary about it.
Love the 737’s, flown many times
I miss the Boeing 727
I love the A320N
My 1st jet flight , i never been so terrified in my life As we came in fishtailing on the icey runway.
Reverse thrust was perfectly applied between the zig and the zag.
Good thing I had a short lay over time to go change my shorts
Pretty nice take off.
I took off from Boston bound for Las Vegas with sporadic severe thunderstorms between Boston and Detroit. Nice lightning shows. Once we got over Michigan, we started rocking a bit 😨. The rest of the flight was uneventful.
Great video!
Thanks!
Pretty impressive storm cell near the airport
Thats one hell of a steep climb
This is so cool!
That is the longest taxi I've ever seen. The stewardess sounded cool as a cucumber. I'd be under the seat!
I love having a window seat, even if it costs extra.
Always💯
Why would that cost extra?????
Plane bridge. Cool.
I wonder if any airport has a plane *tunnel*, where the cars go over the planes. That'd be something.
That's not scary, that's fun, especially at night when you can see the light show
Yeah it is really fun at night getting the best view of the ahh inspiring lighting show and then when you get above the clouds and see the white fluffy cotton candy clouds
@@stevestillplaysgames5732 I assume you have FSX, I do
No actually my dad has a single engine beachcraft bonanza from 1950 and have many memories of my dad and me up there among the clouds after a summer time thunderstorm as well as many winter time flights after a storm ahh the beauty of the puffy clouds good times
Can’t disagree with that!
Blood hell! That is one very long taxi.
Damn those storms were crazy! We get nothing here compared to the Midwest and really loved the takeoff footage at the end!
Thanks! Those storms get crazy over there!
@@AlbanyAviation2951751 Indeed!
Except the flight attendant sounds like someone who hasn't had their morning cup of coffee yet.

Beautiful ❤️
smooth sailing !!
The clouds and sunset are so beautiful, and I loved the lightning! What are people crying about?
Thanks! Much appreciated
Diane - with all due respect, it’s good to know you enjoyed the lightning from the video and everything else. People may be crying for various reasons. They may find the storms scary especially when flying through them. As much as the pilots do really well with flying their airplanes especially within questionable weather like this, it doesn’t mean it would be pleasant for everyone. No offense, but it would be much appreciated if you didn’t question why people would be freaking out. Not everyone is capable of managing their fears of flying especially through stormy weather. Have a nice day and I hope you can find peace and healing in knowing everyone copes differently.
I wonder if that's common for O'Hare. I was supposed to land there several years ago but we couldn't land due to thunderstorms right over the airport. We had to go around in circles for 20 minutes to a half hour. Then we were told we could land. Missed my connecting flight but I was ok with that!
Safe travels
Nice!
Experienced this on take off inside storm in Panama..we sat at end of runway for more than 1 hour with pilot also 737-800 assuring everyone it was safe on the runway....NOT in the air.
Thanks for the WING shot. 🤣
How is this scary?
I have to fly a couple of times a year to and from Asia, namely Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, and a couple of other Asian countries.
During the monsoon seasons, there are plenty of windy thunderstorms. Those are the storms that are scary. I've been doing this for over five years now, and they still make me uneasy.
Nice video, by the way.
Thanks!
What was scary about this?
I agree - I commented about it above. . . Bait/Click
This was United Airlines you were flying on? You got some good shots of the lightning, and the thunderstorm.
Thank you!
I'm questioning what made this departure scary...?
Very pretty clouds though, it's always nice (if that's the correct word) taking off when there's storm clouds around, it adds for a great view.
This is what these people do to get us to click on their posts. . . they lie! Bait/Click
7:58 is that taxiway going over a highway??! I've never seen that before!
Yes it is...I don't know about other airports but in Chicago O'Hare and Dallas fort Worth, there is taxiway above highways❤
That would be pretty cool to see from the highway!
Odd for the fact that most storms approach from the west or southwest which means typically you aren’t taking off to the east. Must’ve been a weird day.
Well IDK about that being a "scary takeoff". It looked pretty good to me!👍🏼🛫 What was scary was how long it took to taxi to the runway!!!!😱😱😱 I mean Geeez Louise it felt like the plane taxied all the way from Wrigley Field just to get to the runway!😄😄
is no one going to talk about how the pilot did an intersection takeoff rather than using the whole runway
Funny enough, that is an extremely common thing at ORD when they use 10L/28R for departures! The only planes that use the full length are the heavy ones (Africa/Asia flights)
What's to talk about?
unless you ask specifically for full length due to performance O Hare practices intersection departures on certain runways.
I flew in this conditions many Times when I was a consultant is very scary had lots of bad turbulent Flights specially from Chicago to DFW pilots want to delay flights but passengers get angry so they have no choice but to takeoff it's pretty scary
Was the turbulence bad?
I wish a mic could be attached to the wing to properly capture the true beauty of this mechanical sound…
Cool
So scary! 😱
LOL!
It seems like you could have been well underway on a road trip given the taxi time.
Scary?? More like beautiful
dont think I have ever seen spoilers come up during take off? Why would they?
Probably to test the flight controls
Despite of the Storm The Take off went 👌 Successfully well. 😅😂😊❤ Amen 🙏. Thank Jesus for Our Protection.
Spooky scary 👻
Was the Pilot doing shots like in the movie 'Flight' ?
That was not even a 3 on the turbulence scale. Nothing like the old days. The weather radar used to help the crew pick their way through the storms rather than avoiding them as they do today. Mid to late afternoon arrivals on the East coast, especially the deep-South could be VERY dicey. Ceiling and wall panels popping off. People screaming, vomiting, losing control of their bowels or bladders. I got off of one flight through a storm into Miami one summer and people were dragging themselves off of the aircraft and sitting down in the gate crying. Same flight my head got slammed against the sidewall so hard it broke my glasses.
Nice Video👍👍🙏
Thank you!
Whole lotta pavement at that airport.
That really wasn’t very scary at all! Kinda neat…the lighting & ominous clouds & all….but relatively calm air.
So your going to leave the ground and take off into that lightning and nasty clouds that look like tornadoes with severe turbulance possibly..my thought is "oh hell to the no" ! 😂 i would run the other way at the airport..! 🤣✈ still i have the UT-MOST respect for EVERY pilot out there and i love watching these flights take off and land safley on u-tube ! 👍😂 "Hats off to Pilots around the World" ! 👍✈♥️
Dam dude, A 30 minute drive to get to the runway,
I have flown into O'hare..Its pretty dangerous and wierd..
Long, long ground tour of ORD. Miles of taxi just getting to the runway!
Nice catch! can i use this as part of my series for a video? you will be credited in the description and video ❤
omgoodness, Did he taxi from Des Plaines...???
I was on a plane in China that took off in pouring down rain and didn't think a plane was supposed to leave in bad weather like tha.t but we did.
What was so scary about that take off? Are we missing something? Was this taken with an iPhone on airplane mode?
You got it👍
17:37 quick lightning shot center of screen
18:42 upper left corner
Nothing scary about that, apart from the odd flash of lightning. Seems a perfectly smooth flight.
It was certainly quite eventful taxiing and climbing out from a stormy airport which just got out of a ground stop, not to mention most flights that night were cancelled
Video doesn't capture turbulence very well. You can be bouncing like a ball and the video will look smooth.
The scariest part of the video seemed to be taking off 2000ft down from the holding point.
The only thing scary here is the length of that taxi run
Busted texting on takeoff 😉 safety first, specially on busy departures as ohare the last thing pilots need are distractions as static sounds in their headphones because of people sending messages
Ok
That was a pretty scary takeoff, but do you remember what the flight number was? Also, the aircraft registration of this airplane?
Oh and the date too?
Yeah no problem, UAL1726, N76265, and this was filmed last Wednesday August 25th
And the flight attendant. She sounds like someone that hasn't had their morning cup of coffee yet.
Lol. And has sinusitis.
What was scary about it???
the storm already passed the airport
WHY CANT THEY WENT TO THE STORM IS OVER ❤
I would have been more scared of being on a Boeing than the storms.
That was perhaps the most sedate takeoff and flight I've seen
I have seen much scarier takeoffs. It looks to me like the storms were moving away, or missing off to the south. Layered anvil clouds are not dangerous for aircraft. The updrafts were not close.
What a long Taxi, I thought JFK was bad
what exactly was scary about this take off?
There could be many reasons why takeoff may be scary. Speaking from my own personal experience, I used to find takeoffs very scary too. Not everyone finds it fun but still they manage to get through it. It’s how one copes with the takeoff and everyone deals with differently. With all due respect, please no judging. Be kind. No one deserves to be questioned about how they cope especially with a takeoff. Everyone’s tolerance is different. Have a nice day and I hope the new year brings you much love and healing in hopes you come to terms to accept people as they are and appreciate that they’re still trying their best.
2/3s of the video is taxing lol but nice video
That’s where most of the storm is!
5:58 did I just hear the flaps
I mean if your nervous your nervous but I’ve taken off in much worse where the lightning was next to the plane plus the turbulence was heavy I simply just confined to eat the tacos I bought from the terminal this would be a normal takeoff and climb out
Thank god I can find ways to avoid ohare tho
I heard it’s almost as confusing as jfk so I tend to avoid JFK and ORD as a whole 😂
What's so scary about it? I flew for 25 years - looks like a very smoothe takeoff. Bait/Click
Ong
Tyler Mac should be fantastic I wanna get on board
Scary 🤔
