BJJ Conceptual Basics - Dealing with Your Opponent's Extended Arms in Side Control

  • In order to be successful at BJJ we need to understand that we need to be in proper alignment (Posture, Structure, and Base) to generate force into our opponent. If we are not in proper alignment we need to correct this before we look to advance our attack in anyway. Once in proper alignment we can then look at how we can negatively affect our opponent's alignment to create vulnerability.
The first battle we have when trying to complete a guard pass and establish side control is our opponent framing with extended arms. We look to deal with these frames by either detaching and redirecting, or we can just detach and not engage in the battle at that range.
