Many of the previous tutorials I looked up when I wanted to learn about Blender's vfx and composite features didn't quite explain enough on how to practically use the view layer so I was blurry. But holy damn, you did a very good job of explaining it without getting too deep, kudos to that, now I actually understand how to utilize it. I'm def looking forward to learn from u more.
i just started with 3d a bit ago and your work is really great. really thankful to have someone like you actively putting out great lessons to learn. you deserve more support for your work !
This was fantastic Jacob! Thanks so much. I know modeling in Blender but just now learning VFX and you paced it perfectly. Now I just have to rewatch it over again with different footage and models to lock it in. Thanks!
Really well done clear instructions and nice to make it simpler version for starters, and of course without use of shortcuts which not a lot of starters know and prefer to use mouse for navigating and setting. Thank you very much mate.
Thank you, youre so helpful and clear, quick question : The shadow of the object when rendering preview cycle mode doesn't appear, I've checked the shadow catcher and it's checked, is there anything else that needs to be set?
Such a nice tutorial, I started VFX session with your tutorial with the same subject you posted 3 month ago and I am repeating the basic things with this tutorial to make sure I do remember what I learned ! I want to make really shorts footage (under 10 sec) with Minecraft characters in that. Could you recommend any tutorial that I can learn about that ? I saw couple of add-on tutorial on UA-cam but still am not sure which add on I have to use. Thank you for your high quality tutorial. I really learned so many basic things through your vids. Thanks.

Hi, thank you very much for the perfect and clear content. I have followed the steps you provided, and the final result is similar. However, my object (a horse) is wobbling a bit. Could this be due to tracking issues? My tracking result is 0.27px. Should I consider using other software, like SynthEyes, to avoid the wobble that I don't want? The challenges I've encountered have left me feeling a bit frustrated, prompting me to reach out to you. Thank you once again. Additionally, I wonder why people don't use vertical videos instead of horizontal ones. Does the process remain the same for vertical videos, or are there differences? Can you shed some light on this?
Hey, Do you have any idea how would go about water? Water is a very common shot. Say we wanted to composite a creature beneath the surface of live action water, the camera would still being above water. Seeing something underneath. OR how about a creature emerging from water? would be interested to see how Jacob would tackle that.
If there’s something under the water, most of the times you can get away with using the color information of the footage to distort the CG under the water and using grading and depth passes we can make it realistic. If it’s on top of or interacting with the water, then there are many ways to go about it. From simulations to fancy distortion techniques, we can composite the CG with the water but it’s really a case by case. Water is one of the most challenging things to get right so that’s why you don’t see a lot of it unless it’s a higher budget production.
Because for normal multipass exr files the shadow pass won’t include the shadow behind the object only the stuff visible from the camera. This way we have the entire shadow so we can use it for compositing. For the CG you could get away with it but for a simple scene like this, I didn’t think we’d need all of those different passes to keep it simple.
Hello Jacob, your tutorial is very nice, but unfortunately I had a problem, 2 more people asked in the comments, but even though I did what you said, the problem was not solved. When I deleted the tracks as at 18:05, the slove error value went up to 180. Do you have any information on how I can solve this?
I think its a bug or something ,try changing the tracking model or just tweak some settings or delete/add new takers. just change something /then you can return to your original settings/. That is of course your fcurves of the trackers seems to be fine without any peaks
Camera tracking is more widely used and accurate for most case scenarios. The fspy geotracker method was specific to that use case because I didn’t need ground interaction and it was a smooth movement. Hopefully that makes sense and always default to camera tracking.
bro how can i track camera when the footage has sky scene. my sky tracking always fails because sky doesnt have enough features to track. so please make a tutorial for it
Unless there are a lot of details or things on the ground to use as reference, it’s really tough to track just a blank sky. When filming it’s always important to know that you’re going to camera track so you can film the shot with a lot of tracking features in mind. Hopefully this helps
Hello i finished the tutorial but when i render i get a transparent background without the video in it, i checked the transparent in film so i don't know why can't i see it
One question: What is the purpose of converting a video into frames when the compression you obtain from those individual frames have the issues of intra compression conversion (macroblockins, ...)? Not ironic. Serious question. Thank You
PNG is lossless and we do it because not every program treats video codecs the same so there are more issues when using the same footage between different programs. Nuke for example is written for sequences in mind and is much more friendly when it comes to VFX. Also it’s nice to not be tied down to a specific frame rate which you would have to make sure is correctly set in each program if you were using a video sequence.
agx unfortunately applies to the background images and alphas in the compositor, i tried convert colorspace node but i get wired colors, is there a method to exclude agx effect on other clips without exporting or using extremal apps ?
Unfortunately with the way blender is set up, you have to render AGX passes first and then composite in standard. The same can be said about any compositing software though. Most of the times you are rendering from a 3d program into a compositing program so there are always conversions and colorspace issues you have to solve. It’s just part of the process and just think that you basically just want to have 2 projects if you want to stay in blender. One for the CGI and rendering and then the other for the final compositing. Hopefully that helps
Does camera tracking not work for some videos? I recorded a video woth my phone, and its portrait 9:16 ratio, and the video has a day time, road with moving cars and a building, But I am unable to achieve a good motion track, I have watched a ton of your videos too and doing everything and have tried multiple times, I am able tk get a good solve error(0.2-0.3-0.5) but the actual tracking doesnt work, like if I add an object,
Portrait videos are a little weird in blender. I believe someone had said before that you have to go into the side menu by pressing N and then make the camera sensor vertical for it to work. Unfortunately I haven’t messed around with it so I can’t tell you exactly what to do but hopefully that helps
Hii Jacob , Im having a small issue with the solve error - the first time I do it it turns out great under 0.3 but then once I clean tracks and resolve the camera motion it goes crazy to 80px ... do you know why would that be happening, cause I dont think Im doing anything different from the tutorial :/ thank you!
That happens sometimes in blender and it’s because blender isn’t that fantastic at camera tracking. Try cleaning it up a few more times and it usually shoots back down. If that doesn’t work, it might be due to you deleting too many markers that the average goes back up because there’s not enough information. Hopefully this helps and keep on trying!
At 18:15, did your solve error increase for once after deleting some points and solving again?? I dont know how that is possible but its happening with me like a few time, and if I just cleanup some more points and re solve, the error goes down, is it a bug or something??
Yeah Blender camera tracking isn’t the best when it comes to solve errors. That’s why I do my own camera tracking for non-tutorials in SynthEyes. The reason it jumped for me was because I had deleted too many markers and so it shot up. You can either try to resolve it a couple more times and I find it’ll eventually go back down after cleaning it again or just undo you deletion and try selecting less. Very finicky and the main reason I don’t use it any more.
Unless your blue line at the bottom of the tracking window shows any red, you should be fine. Sometimes that could just mean that some of the refinements couldn’t be calculated or anything like that. The most important thing is that you get a solve error that’s low enough and consistent through the duration of the footage. Hope that helps!

Hello Dear, Thanks for your effort. During solving the camera motion i am getting some data failed to reconstruct. any solution ?
Is there a way to select multiple tracks manually and delete them? Hold shift doesn't work
If you hit C you can select multiple like that and then B allows you to box select
@@Jacob_Zirkle thank you. I'll try that
Hi, what should I do if the blur node works for the entire frame?
Why do all that in compositing when you can just render out exr files and tell it to render separate passes.
@@Jacob_Zirkle Thanks for writing back. That makes sence. I guess I just use all the passes when I bring in into Ae.

Camera tracking is more widely used and accurate for most case scenarios. The fspy geotracker method was specific to that use case because I didn’t need ground interaction and it was a smooth movement. Hopefully that makes sense and always default to camera tracking.
