    Thank you I love Dura bond. It works well in an old plastered house where you screen the walls etc. for a base and then top with the easy sand to trowel it out a little. Lime and Guaging will burn floors etc.where the DuraBond and EasySand are so much more user friendly. Great Video !!! Keep up the great work !!

You are 100% correct Ray it is an amazing product just like all the USG products ! Their plasters are very great products too.

    you are def a pro and i am a big fan.... i also do this work for a living and would add something for the DIY people. This guy is highly skilled and his method is sound, however, if you do not have the general dexterity with the tools and the eye for mud levels on a wall ... IF you use DURABOND you will never be able to sand down the high spots and there is a lot more work skim coating a wall to fix that if you dont want the sun showing bulges on your wall in the middle of the day. Just use premixed mud from a bucket if you are doing this for the 1st time. GREAT VIDEO!!! YOU ARE A PRO

    If I tape with Durabond 90 can I accomplish the prefil requirement on tight joints? And then an hour later 10 box it with Durabond 90 or Easy Sand and then 12 box it with Plus 3 and be ready to sand the next day? Same for corners and bead. The goal is to use hot mud and get a whole house finished in 2 days and ready to paint using bazooka, boxes. I have an Apla-tech air system to feed the boxes and angles. Can they handle Durabond 90 if I work fast and cleanup every hour?

    Ray, it may help to explain that in the Chicago area smooth wall rock came around in the seventies sometime the edges of the rock were rounded and most definitely had to be prefilled with Duro 90. I don’t know if you recall that the durobond back then was pink in color and heated up in the pan noticeably and was even harder than today’s duro I knew guys that used it as bondo for Auto body work my self included !

    Hey you brought up my question, you use an 8" knife and it looks like the durabond is almost dry before putting the tape. To me I would for sure make a crown. I'm guessing you're applying enough pressure that the knife is bending in a little bit to still have a slight bevel. Thanks for the video. Informative

    • @ArchCityConstruction
      @ArchCityConstruction 5 років тому +2

      I agree. If you kill the bevel with durabond, how do you not crown? The bevel is the difference between flats and butts. You need it to accept the tape and not crown out.

  • @22shroomster

    all due respect, my boss who has been taping for over 30 years always uses easy sand to pre-fill butt joints and seams. Never has had an issue otherwise we would not be using it. While I do agree that the easy sand is indeed not easy to sand, we still use it to second coat a patch if we're in a pinch. is using Dura Bond a personal preference or a superior product to easy sand?

    • @22shroomster
      @22shroomster 5 років тому

      @@THEDRYWALLDOCTOR1 thank you for your input. And yes I would not use Dura Bond as a second coat because it would be impossible to sand. That's why in a pinch I use easy sand. Thanks again! I really enjoy watching your videos. You are a true consummate professional

    Durabond is AWESOME but never mix more than you can trowel out in about 20 minutes or you will be chiseling it out of the bucket. I generally mix 1 part water to 2 parts Durabond. As for sanding it's not made to be a finish coat but yes you CAN sand it with moderate effort.

    Personally, I can’t hammer a nail straight, that being said I have a mud question. If you wanted to apply the mud to wall as a sort of bas relief type sculpture, which mud would you use? Which one is strong enough to build up layers to make wall art? I have one started as an experiment but it sands really easy. Makes me question if it’s durable enough. I’m using Dap all purpose joint compound now.

    You can't hang rock until the lumber can pass the moisture meter test by the inspector at least in Washington and Oregon and sometimes its required to frame with kiln dried studs to speed up the process and eliminate the need for using heaters and dehumidifiers and fans so would you bother using durabond in that situation because in 26 years as a framer I've never seen a mud & tape crew do that or prefill but it's also the same company that hangs the rock so everything is tight and no need for it

      @@THEDRYWALLDOCTOR1 but at the beginning of the video you said you use it because of the moisture in the lumber and when it dries and contracts you'll get cracks settling is a different situation and I just curious as to why someone would use durabond and add more work if the lumber was completely dry and I'm sure that durabond wouldn't hold up if settling was an issue I've seen foundations develop cracks up to an inch wide on houses I've had to jack up, stabilize and repair the foundation on so on houses like that would it be a good idea to use durabond for the patch work I used 20 min as a base coat and it was good but I don't know if it stood the test of time have you had to do any of that type of repair and what did you use if so just curious not trying to be dick

      @@THEDRYWALLDOCTOR1 Touche the humidity is ridiculous at times I was wondering what do you do on butt joints since you have 2 rows of screws in one stud it would double the chance for cracking when the stud shrinks wouldn't it I've had more issues with butt joints cracking then the horizontal joints I've thought about leaving a small gap to fill but haven't tried it to see if it would make a difference just wondering if you've had that happen and what would you do to stop that from happening

    So all drywall butt joints must be pre-filled with durabond first, before taping? You seem like you know what you're doing and I believe you. I'm just a home DIY guy. But it's amazing that none of the other youtube channels that I've seen do this or even talk about the need for it:
    Home RenoVision DIY
    Vancouver Carpenter
    HouseImprovements
    etc.
    If they do, and I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me. From what I've seen, the other youtube channels just fill and tape with quick setting or all purpose joint compound.

      If you're taping with hot mud there's no need to pre-fill but if not you're right nobody else does it and they should

    • @kam5876
      @kam5876 3 роки тому

      The good guys do pre-fill. Vancouver Carpenter teaches this way too. I learned the hard way. My ceiling joints cracked because I didn't prefill and used mesh tape instead of paper. Paper tape is best.

    If Durabond is as strong as cement once you fill the crack with it why do you need to tape it. Surely the crack wont show ever as it is so strong? Couldn't you just mud straight over it no tape?

    have been taping for 40 years and never have had to use durabond to fill the joints to stop cracking. I also worked 4 years fixing cracks after a major earthquake, and their is no taping compound or concrete filler that can stand up to a 7.0 quake . he must be getting paid to say that you have to use durabond to stop cracking. Good try through

      Its a regional issue, where he lives there is very high frost and humidity and the wood they use is shit, so they get a lot of expansion and contraction. Durabond is kind of a regional product as well. I've never had to prefill for Nevada/California/Arizona, but i'd do it depending on the site and what conditions are existing. I've actually seen an absurd amount of joints crack on every joint in a project I was just on recently in a very humid location, so it does happen, and it was a commercial job as well, fairly new.....

      The Doc does a great job, and does the work with attention to detail quality ,honesty, and integrity alot of workers cant say that. Realistically you wont get every crack or keep things from cracking long after your work is done. So many factors go into this starting with what soil the building or home sits on. I heard of situations where the homes or buildings were built on previous landfill areas or places where the soil was sinking. Areas also with alot of ground movement these structures move, and shift during settling sometimes for years. Another factor is the work done in front of you everything from the foundation, framing, sheetrocking if alot of that is shoddy work it makes it that much tougher for your work to be top quality the materials used, and the good job can only guarantee so much.
