Everyone, I seriously don't know what to say, but I'm gonna give it a shot...
I was not expecting a response like this from the online community. For me personally, this wasn't just another reaction. Truly. I've been building up to this for about 3 months now, after this song was first suggested when I started my channel. But I wanted to take my time, and I'm glad I did. This one didn't feel the same. It felt like a huge undertaking and like I was getting ready to present my dissertation to prove myself to an online audience from all over the world. I honestly can't describe the emotional rollercoaster I went through with this video, not just while filming, but the 8-10 hours I spent editing it afterwards and looking up more info as I went.
I've read every comment that has been posted so far. ALL OF THEM. And I'd love to reply to all of them, but it would probably take just as much time as it did to make this video, if not longer. But what I will say... I'm absolutely moved by them. A lot of you have shared your emotions about the song, and even bared your own hearts and souls with personal things that you relate this song to. It's almost overwhelming, but in the best way possible. THIS IS THE POWER OF MUSIC. It strikes certain emotions, reminds us of good and bad times, helps us through those times, and brings us together. And this band in particular, is just magical. I don't even look at Nightwish in the same way that I was in the previous 14 videos I've done. Tuomas is an absolute creative genius, and these band members are living LEGENDS.
Whether it's through comments, sharing these videos, Patreon, Twitch, or just spending your time with us on Discord, I appreciate all of the support you guys have given me along the way, and I will continue trying my hardest to bring you enjoyment out of my love for music and discovering new things along the way.

She shares the pain of both the band and the audience...
Floor is very bonded with her parents and she's now mother herself, so she feels and understands these ending words with full her existence, i think

Floor has a channel here, and in one of her vlogs she confessed, she was diagnosed as a hypersensitive personality, I think that is why she has so much connection and emotion in her voice.
@@Pepenez I believe she is actually friends with Tarja as well, so she probably can understand the confliction more than anybody.
The first time I heard Floor sing this, she got me at "Sparkle my scenery..."; eyes leaking, runny nose. Then she sang "Tuck me in..." and I completely lost it. Gasping for breath, a blubbering heap, I had to leave the room to compose myself. I don't think I have _ever_ been hit so hard by a performance. I'm 64, dammit; I'm supposed to be a life-hardened, cynical old git, but Floor can do me in every time she sings. I loved Tarja (still do), but she never brought out the emotions that Floor so consistently does.

You haven't done Dead Boy's Poem, yet, have you? That one'll hit you in the feels, too. Do the Buenos Aires 2018 version. I'd also recommend Tarja singing Swanheart (not the solo version, though). I don't think there are any with decent video quality, but it's a lovely song, too often overlooked, IMO.

The band members also see Floor as their sister.
Floor also said that the band and the management welcomed her with open arms from the beginning.
Wich helped her build up her confidence that she could pull off what they were asking of her.
@@emfer3010 I really feel like the majority of the fans did, too. Many of us knew Floor before she was with Nightwish, and when they asked her to fill in, a lot of us were like "Duh! Obvious choice!" But that doesn't mean we were any less happy to see her on stage with them!

While Marko & Emppu give their support during this song, what many people miss when viewing the songs individually is the previous song in the show was Alpenglow and at the end Floor crosses the stage to stand on Tuomas' keyboard riser and sing the line "Conquering the darkest places" to him and he thanks her.
They're not so much showing support as saying sorry, because Marco and Emppu were the ones who really pushed Tuomas to fire Tarja as can be heard in the song "betrayed by your friends".

@@Laura-dq1zw NO, it was Marco who gave Tuomas an ultimatum, he writes about this in his own bibliography, that Tarja was costing Marco and Nightwish money and opportunities by her refusing to tour endlessly, so he said to Tuomas "she goes or I go"
We Finns don't need to read the backstory, because it's in our blood. It was a true national grief at the time. Even our Prime Minister commented it. However i think that "the Gathering of the three Musketeers" at the end is nowadays merely part of the show than actual worry about Tuomas's wellbeing. The song itself is very powerful and emotional in all possible ways. "Be still, my son, You're home. Oh when did you become so cold?.." makes me 😭 every time. Well done, Tank!
A national heartache for Finland, and this divine band is not in mainstream radio play or much known in the US. They deserve huge stadium play here, just like in SA and across Europe. They have captured my heart and am so enjoying falling in love with every Nightwish artist. 💞💞💖

Nightwish are on another level. I'm listening to metal for the past 36 years and I've never come across anyone like them. I try to get friends to listen to metal but they just won't. They'll never know what they're missing. It's a form of art

@SteveNL Hi..... I am not out to change anyones opinion.. Everyone has different tastes. As far as vocal metal is concerned there are many types of metal as you know, but I think that only a certain percentage of metal vocals have a raspy voice. Floor Jansen being one good example from Nighwish, which is a Symphonic metal band as you know. This is my own personal opinion on Lovebites. This band has only been around for 3 years. It was formed in 2017 and has still to prove itself as one of the best metal bands in a generation. In time I think they will acomplish that. 5 incredibly gifted musicians gelling together usually means only one thing. A world class band that usually stamps their mark on music history. As far as the vocalist is concerned I disagree that she has a childish voice. Out of all the personal reviews that I have read I have never come accross anyone calling her voice childish. This is what makes Asami unique. She is not a copycat of every metal band that has a raspy voice, I would not change a thing between these 5 incredibly gifted ladies. They are 5 of a kind , as their latest latest Live album (DVD/Blueray) which was released in July 2020 is titled. Here are another couple of songs from that incredibe album. Maybe you will enjoy these a bit better.( But maybe not )........ Cheers !

This song made me physically nervous at the first listen when the album came out and it still did this time watching. Live, it was almost unbearable. Maybe because I myself was going through a hard time in 2005 - I was at the verge of ending my time on this earth and suddenly stumbled over Nightwish(rather like Nemo was smacked into my face and woke me up, making me reconsidering my priorities and, long-term, figuring life is what you make of it, not what others want to make your life be - that was actually a month before they disbanded with Tarja). I instantly felt some odd connection to Tuomas simply by looking at the band picture in the booklet from the CD I bought, not even knowing yet that he's the one who wrote the musical force that drowned me in enlightenment. (heck that sounds cheesy but I don't think I can describe it any other way lol)
Of course I did my research and emotionally went along the downwards spiral, almost suffocating on my first listen to PatP with the booklet in hands. Probably STANDING next to my CD player wasn't such a good idea, in retrospect. But the feeling remains to this day. Sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the situation and mental state I'm in when listening. This time, once again, my mouth was trembling so bad I could barely breathe - paired with the urge not to breathe so my breathing doesn't make me miss any fraction of a second, it's almost hilarious. The brain can be a wicked place and pull all other body functions along; it's fascinating. I'm nowhere near the black hole I was in in 2005 and still it strikes me, there, as I'm riding the rainbow that my life is currently.
This particular performance of the song doesn't make it easier either. Those musical harmonies just throw me into a rampaging tempest and I left my life vest on land, knowing it wouldn't help me anyway AND that I'd get washed ashore by my own tears eventually anyway, when the last note fades.
I totally get that this piece got you even more emotional while editing - and that is explained easily: the first listen is just too much for the brain to process.
Regarding your note to "metalheads not seeing Nightwish as metal enough", yes, sadly the majority of people who ACTIVELY listen to music, still don't really listen. They hear the music, they can sing or hum along, know the words, the melodies - but they only hear, rather than listen. Whether it be because they don't care, don't want, don't want to care, are afraid to bother - is out of question. They just don't, at a certain point in time. It might change, or not. But you sadly also cannot force someone to actually LISTEN. Empathy cannot be elicited.
And there it is. The reason why I mostly don't comment. If I do, it's prone to become a novel. Yet I'm glad to have found, with you, another person on this planet who indeed LISTENS to music. And that I am thankful for. Continue what you love to do and never stop being yourself.

Ah, you do as you like and that´s okay. Your job isn´t to entertain us, your job is to enjoy the music with us together. And as long as you stay "authentic you" and have fun doing this, with all the emotions coming up, you know you do it right.

Yes some reactors (not this one)are reacting on songs where i believe, why did you ever chose the band nightwish to comment on. Reactors may dislike a song, so are the commenters disliking reactors. At least react on a band where you have a some appreciation or fun listening at.

@@fixxa6455 I believe, there's nothing wrong with reacting to a band with a "bad" reaction, if the reactor doesn't like it. The amount of "hype-reactors" taking on ghost love story, just for the views, whilst having nothing to say at all, is just absurd though. In tank's reactions you see a real connection to music. That's why he and Elizabeth Zharoff are my two favorite reactors.
I would say do "Master Passion Greed" next, for the anger side of this same period. The song is heavy as hell, features Marco on lead vocals, with some backing vocals on the chorus, etc. It's never been performed live, so just the studio version. There is a fan-made video, editing clips of loads of other live performances, but I think the basic audio version is better IMO.

P.S. The great cover artist "Susanne" is literally from Floor's stable, as Floor gave her lessons while she was working as a vocal coach, which was before she joined Nightwish. Tarja on the other side supported Susanne as a patreon when she gained knowledge. If you want more of Susanne try her covers of "Walking in the Air" and "Eva" - just mesmerizing.
I would personally even suggest Meadows of Heaven after all those. Thought that song was a PERFECT way to finish the DPP album.

First time I saw this was Julia Nilon's reaction. For me as a life long musician (32 of which have been bass guitar) I connected to every conceivable aspect of the composition.
I absolutely teared up and had to fight (albeit failed miserably) a major battle not to lose it completely. "Mother and Father" really hit hard for me when I first heard it. My loss was not over a bandmate, but my own mother who died after some 20 years of battling horrible auto-immune diseases. The lyric "Be still my son you're home" even now brings me to tears (STOP CHOPPING ONIONS). This entire song is about the stages of grief without a doubt.
For those that obsess about the backstory I don't think really get the power of music. They have tunnel vision and "it has to be this or you are wrong" is the wrong attitude. Everyone (and should) personalize the lyrics and song beyond what Tuomas wrote about as I did. That's the grand slam of great composition.
To call Tuomas the metal Mozart is an understatement. To call him a genius is an understatement. To call him legendary is an understatement. Composers like him are so rare that words cannot encapsulate. That's why I'll say his band Nightwish is it's own infinite universe.

In Master Passion Greed I'd feel the band expressing some disagreement regarding the acts and talks of the manager and husband of Tarja Turunen, Marcelo Cabuli.

Did anyone else notice that Tuomas himself joined his voice during the first part of Mother and Father? That's the most intense and tear-inducing part of the song for me, because I can literally hear the grief in his voice and see it on his face. This song is a true masterpiece.

I personally feel like the '3 minutes' part is the most impressive musical skill shown by them because, in that section, if their tempo is off be even 5 bpm they completely miss that spot... and to nail that is just impressive.
Nightwish uses a backing Track in almost every song. They can't be off by even a split second.

They may have a click track because they have backing music of course that plays so it might just nake it easier to play with a clicker. But I guarantee you could take that clicker out and they'd still hit their mark.

One interesting interpretation of this song is that the part "V. Mother and Father" is about heaven or afterlife where the previously died parents comfort the newly killed poet. Tuomas is openly secular atheist so he probably wasn't thinking this interpretation but I think the words may be even more sad with that interpretation.
I had heard that that part is actually based on a conversation that Tuomas had with his mother, with the lyrics being what she said to him.
@@gilliganallmighty3 Yes, I agree that this was probably based on actual conversation instead of some supernatural thinking. That doesn't remove the possibility for alternative interpretation. Tuomas has said in an interview that he had specific interpretation in mind while writing the lyrics but he will not declare that publicly to allow every interpretation to be equally valid for each fan.
1.8k comments, so you won't read mine. But you deserve those. I've been falling into the Nightwish rabbithole myself, this is the song that.. well.. I don't find the words. Having been in dark places myself, this is just insane.
Funnily enough, I did see them live a year before I fell into the rabbit whole. I've heard of them in the 90s, just not my kind of music, so I never really got into them. But, I worked at Wacken to serve a cold brewed one to the lovely people there, LOVED the audience, and my boss and his wife took me to see Nightwishs show in our free time, although I didn't really want to. I know I was standing there nodding my head in appreciation, really enjoying it, I wish I fell into the rabbit hole earlier. It's different when you've had the time to listen to music alone, being overrun at a concert is tough.
Anyhow, great reaction, I've watched a few other reactions of you and I really really like them. Nice, respectful way of treating music.

I know exactly what you mean, I was a radio DJ in my 20s and was dating someone who's father worked at Billboard, he gave us tickets to Dio and I did NOT appreciate what I was experiencing, Dio in a huge sold out stadium venue. I got to see him again playing probably 15 years later in a tiny little club and by that point thankfully I realized this guy was a living legend. I had to stick around after the show to wait for some friends and we were sitting there finishing our drinks and Ronnie walks over with a HUGE grin (that never left his face the whole time) and he asked if we enjoyed the show and asked if he could sit with us. Like... you don't need to ask! He was the sweetest, most down to earth person I ever met. I'm always glad when I give something a real chance, Nightwish is in that category, symphonic wasn't my scene. With maturity you begin to appreciate talent, whatever it sounds like.
I’ve seen this performance reacted by many UA-cam reactors and I gotta say......until I just finished watching your reaction to this performance I now get it. I now understand the passion the Nightwish fans have towards this band. The totality of your video and the way you informed and presented this performance.....I now get it. For me personally that's what makes NW stand out from other bands.

Watching reaction videos for this performance today 9+ times has reminded me I really need to listen to Nightwish more often.
I'd say Alpenglow live at Wembley would be worth checking out! I've never seen anyone do that one and it's a great companion piece to The Greatest Show on Earth. It's a super underrated song it seems, but i think Tuomas himself said it's the "perfect" Nightwish song with all the elements a Nightwish song should have. Ps. When you do get around to The Greatest Show on Earth, go with Tampere version even though it's not official off the band's own channel. Tampere has a lot more stuff for you specifically to break down, and they play the original arrangement of the song. Wembley version is good too but i think you can appriciate the Wembley version more if you already know the song.

Tampere version is also better visually (compared to the Wembley one) because it’s filmed outdoors during a Finnish summer evening and you can see so much better what is going on because there is so much more light.

The light show - When the gauntlet was in full swing there was nowhere Tuomas could hide, everyone was looking for him and wanted to see his head on a plate. Even the President of Finland was asked about his oppinion on the dismissal of Tarja. The light show illustrate that perfectly, seeking high and low and everywhere.
As I understand it, "The Poet..." is still in the Nightwish reportuare but it is not played at every concert. Should you happen to be at a concert were it is played you should be honoured.
Worth pointing out is that the crowd isn't jumping around and screaming and shouting after the song as they do with other Nightwish songs. The crowd is fairly quiet and mostly just applauding respectfully instead. Cheers / B.

On the last Aussie tour way back in 2016 they did the trinity - GLS, PatP and GSoE
it’s impossible not to go back to the end of an era concert after listening to this song (*cough* especially to songs like ever dream where it looks like tuomas is legitimately crying *cough*) and see it with different eyes. 😭
Ever Dream from End Of An Era is still my go-to version of the song, because I love the combo with Tarja+Marco and because of all the feels Tuomas (and I) has in that time and place, I can't even imagine what he went through on that day. I really hope Tank would react to that as well one day. For me, it will always be a "Tarja song" (mainly because my fandom started around 1998, and because of the End Of An Era event) even if Floor crushes it as well and I loved hearing her sing the old stuff at the Decades tour.
I don't watch this concert much as they are clearly not themselves throughout...Nightwish are always and were always a joyous band even with the serious topics of some of the songs they still showed great joy in their performing of the music and it is lacking from this concert. Emppu barely smiles, Marco is extra aggressive in his vocals. It all works but just feels wrong to me. Individual song are fine but I find the whole concert brings me down.

As her classically trained soprano voice was the element that made Nightwish unique and famous, IMHO she became way too convinced about that she is NW, and that there's no band without her... So, most probably, it never even crossed her mind that she might be fired (and that she might be fired like this), altough, on the other hand, she was openly planning to leave the band, she decided to record one more, last album with them.

"Try to save them all, bleed no more" is hard on its own, without the pain in his voice, but it's like a punch to the gut hearing him sing that line.

1. 13:10 Nope, you are not overthinking it. This is exactly what Emppu was doing, also later Marco and Emppu, going up to Tuomas to give emotional support.
2. I do not watch your reactions for detailed breakdowns, even though I do like the info on the tech side of things. I watch your videos, because of the emotions you have and show. When i first saw nightwish live, it was in a small venue on their first US tour for this album. They performed this and it blew me away. Nightwish will forever be my favorite band. Toumas is a master of orchestral transitions and this entire album is a masterclass in music. I highly recommend watching The Islander live....very haunting very beautiful
The thing not enough people seem to mention about Nightwish to me is that they're storytellers. Behind everything you see and hear is just that, a story, and they bring everything at their disposal to tell those stories, night after night for hours on end. I have still yet to see a band that can create the emotional effect they do.

Why put a label on Nightwish. They’re just in a class of their own. I label it Nightwish. Period!
I actually think classifying Nightwish as "metal" is often going to cause false expectations. Apart from the fact that you don't have to classify music at all costs, I'm glad that Tuomas doesn't feel bound to any canon of "metal" and ventures beyond the genre. Good music is good music, whatever genre, and nobody has to feel forced by anyone to produce music according to some listeners' expectations. For what it's worth, I'm happy to call Nightwish "rock". If I had to be more specific, I would say "modernized, progressive rock in a metal tradition with folk and musical theater influences and some more metallic tracks, with a lot of production." Also, Nightwish has a fanbase that spans beyond the core metal fanbase.

Nightwish truly was a perfect storm of talent to create the ultimate symphonic metal band. You have a weird, genius composer who attracted the talent of multiple classically opera trained lead singers and bass player good enough to frontman his own band, along with a very talented and technical guitar player and drummer.
Chase was right, you absolutely smashed this one. You know, I'm addicted to Nightwish, I can't get enough of their music. This particular song keeps making me emotional no matter how often I've heard/seen it.
Emppu is also a trickster, and I know you've done a reaction to "I want my tears back" but if you see their version from Wacken, there is a part where he turns off Floor's in-ears as he crosses the stage, and when he's on his way back you can see Floor keep an eye on him. Great band chemistry already then, before she was an official member.
Little correction: The album was not written when Anette was in the band, she was selected later. The first demo of the album was thus sung by Marko, you can find it on the internet. So "Imaginaerum" is the first "real" Anette album, just like "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" with Floor.
*But Nightwish had to re-work some songs after they had chosen Anette. Like the demo-song "Reach". After the end of the re-work sessions, the song-title was also changed from "Reach" into "Amaranth"...*

I've said it before, I'll say it again:
the lyric "...1,000 pages of erased text", in and of itself, describes an absolute and utter tragedy. Like, unpublished text or whatever is one thing, but the concept of a poet/author/songwriter/wordsmith/whatever going back and actively _undoing_ *that much* work is damn near unfathomable to me. Line hits harder each time I hear it - it *wails* of desperation and remorse.

YES! You put it so well into words. It's all that could have been, in regards to everything that flew away with Tarja, undone, erased. When something happens in life that changes the course of things forever, destroying any other path that could have been taken, eliminating those possibilities, forever. That one line of 1000 erased pages conveys all that. It's just genius poetry/songwriting/lyricism, and I feel like that's an understatement still.

I had this song as an alarm clock on my old Nokia waking me every morning... I enjoyed how the music builds up at the start of the song, starts quiet and builds up...
Anyway it is my TOP 1 (or TOP3) song from Nightwish, because it is so complex and a whole epic emotional journey, something you do not hear in radio with less than 3 minutes pop songs. And so much more powerful with the backstory.

With Nightwish, you either get then goosebumps of you get the tears. If you're lucky, you get both. Nighhtwish, is just incredible. Hopefully it evokes something your mind that is spectacular in some way in your life. It dose not matter how many times I've heard a song, it still has an impact on me.

I set out 6mos ago, as therapy for depression, to watch every Rammstein (they make me happy!) reaction on UA-cam and stumbled onto this band. I get pure JOY seeing ppl react to greatness! I'm no real singer, but I've taught myself to sing this song (thanks for my 85yr old rocker mom who is a gorgeous soprano!) and I'm able now to do the entire chorus phrasing with one small breath after 'shoulder'... pretty proud about it!

This song just hits me everytime! And watching Emppu and Marko checking on Tuomas talks about their bond as bandmates. I had recommended Shudder Before The Beautifull from the same concert. It's very good production-wise and showcases Tuomas ability with the keyboard
I don't know of another singer that understands the emotional content of a song thoroughly and then conveys that emotion so completely.
That part at the end with the line “you have such oceans within” gets me every single time. We can relate to the pain in this song. I already spilled my guts on Patreon but wanted to add here that your and Chases videos aren’t just “reactions.” They are break downs of the elements of music and live performances along with showing a true passion and love for music. As someone who is a music lover and a Metal music history nerd, this video was great. Like I always say about Nightwish, you just gotta let yourself be immersed in the story and let them take you on that emotional right.

You probably have had many people already say this, but when you do The Greatest Show On Earth, make sure you pick the video from their Tampere concert. I was one of the lucky ones to be there and witness the show and that was something to remember!
Also, select a version that has all the speech parts at the end. Some versions clip the ending and stop where Floor ends the singing part. The part where band greets the audience with soundtrack still plays in the background is part of the piece, they just don't play it live. Having lyrics or not is your choice.
So glad the last line of the song is "The Beginning". The song brings me to a dark time in my own life, yet finishing with those words and having Floor sing me a lullaby makes me feel warm. Tuomas is a genius. BTW I loved your reaction.

Huge respect for the professionalism of each of the band members. To be specific - it takes a really professionally confident guitarist to be standing on stage with several bars of just plain rest. In other words not having to be playing all the time, every second of every song. Same for keyboard, vocalist, etc. Rest measures are just as important as played measures and help build that incredible feeling of dynamics on stage. This band is sooooo good and structuring their arrangements to create mood, dynamics, give their vocalists much needed rest from time to time, etc. And this song is pure art. Thanks for the reaction.
Emppu often uses these rest periods to go around other musicians and acknowledge them. In this song supporting Tuomas was especially critical, but he does it in other songs, too, just in more cheerful way. Emppu is like the oil of positive camaraderie that keeps the Nightwish engine running through lows.
Really appreciate all the bits you drop about the behind the scenes stuff of live performances. As someone who's always just an audience, I really appreciate knowing all of the stuff you keep sharing with us.

Agreed totally about the Tank Facts -- Julia Nilon (another reactor) does the same thing, but her focus is on vocal technique. It really does help to convey your collected thoughts without putting you on the spot for a misspeak or dragging the video pacing down.
I have watched a lot of reactions to all kinds of songs but this video right here is the peak of what this genre can be. You Tank have done many good and even few great videos but this is something else. This is maybe the forth time I watch this and still get amazed by the level of respect and professionalism that can be in a reaction video. Thanks for teaching about shows and helping me to see behind the curtain.

This is a song that has you head banging at the start and crying at the end and totally captivated all the way through.
You're not overthinking it. I read someplace that Emppu and Marko usually go over to Tuomas at the end of the song like they do here. I also remember seeing another live clip of this one where they both went in for a group hug at the end. Powerful.
Tank, You can never truly be ready for this song. especially after you have explored and come to know the band on the level that you have. in some ways that makes the emotional impact of this song even stronger. haven't even watched it yet but I am sure glad that you're finally here and reacting to this particular song. it's a true masterpiece of composition and story telling.

Marco and Emppu have gathered around Tuomas at the end every single time since the song was first performed live in September 2007. It's a lovely tradition even if he might not need the support as much anymore.
Fun fact, which you might know by now but still: Anette never sang 'The Pacific', that part was sung by the same boy soprano that sings the intro on the album. The haunting 'siren in mourning' bit at the end was also mostly Floor's addition but I can't imagine the song without it anymore.
