Unbelievable concentration amidst emotional turmoil. They all knew Tarja would be given her marching papers after this concert. Poor Jukka suffered from chronic insomnia and was having a migraine here (how the hell could anyone play their music with a migraine??!!), and Marco wasn't feeling well (possibly because he was anticipating the Tarya Letter, and Thuomas was wound like a clock with the stress of having his name on the letter that would soon be delivered to his long time friend and collaborator Tarja. I know you can’t cover a song without there being an original, but as an unbiased observer I’ve long believed that this is one of the very few occasions that the cover blows the original away (Hendrix covering Bob Dylan twice springs to mind). I was fortunate enough to see this performed live in a relatively small venue in 2004 and a diehard Floyd fan I was with gave it fulsome praise… and for him Floyd are untouchable). I absolutely love this performance, it’s a goosebumps moment every time. Great reaction as always.
Here's my honest opinion from someone who has never seen or heard Pink Floyd's original and the Nightwish cover until about a month ago. I am 73 and I can honestly say, I can't remember any of Pink Floyd's music, even though it was probably on the radios or in the bars I frequented back then. Anyway, I watched a reaction to Nightwish' High Hopes cover a month or so ago and really enjoyed it, most likely because it was Nightwish and Marko doing it. I have only discovered Nightwish with Floor Jansen 2.5 years ago. Only metal band I like is Nightwish with Floor, but with Marko gone, I will probably just keep re-watching the concerts with him in the band from now on and I love Floor's solo stuff from last 3 years. Well, after watching Nightwish cover of High Hopes, I searched and watched the Pink Floyd version of this song. Got to say Nightwish gets a 10 and Pink Floyd gets a 5 from me. I would never repeat the Pink Floyd original, only the Nighwish cover. That all aside, from your perspective, what keeps these songs from getting a 10 from you. I am sure all Pink Floyd fans would give Pink's version a 10, and all of Nightwish and Marko fans would give their version a 10.
This is from the end of a era concert, there is, as you know a LOT going on in the minds of the band on stage, in this song, some of that .................drama............ comes out in this performance, it helps explain the dark feeling the little glances between them. It gets me watching Jukka Nevalainen visibly in pain from a migraine, and he still performed to that that high standard, then we get to see just how good Emmpu actually is.
I’ve read that David Gilmour did hear this version and said he loved it, but that was from various comments. I haven’t seen the interview/article it came from.

I don't wanna brag I just want to say I feel incredibly privileged that I've heard both Pink Floyd perform High Hopes live in 1994 in Udine, Italy during legendary Division Bell tour and then 10 years later I witnessed Nightwish playing their tribute to High Hopes live in Munich, Germany during the 2004 Once tour. Both concerts were out of body experiences. Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands, grew up listening to them thanks to dad. When I discovered Nightwish in 2000 they instantly became my favorite band so I returned a favor to my dad by introducing him to Nightwish and he fell in love with them immediately. I was 18 in 1994 so dad took me to Pink Floyd concert, 10 years later I took him to Nightwish concert. @@whirledpeaz5758 Liliac covers are more staight covers, they don't really add much of themselves to the songs, that is the difference and why I did not mention them, Nightwish and Disturbed definately add their own thing to the music
I agree with everyone. This is 100% NOT a cover, it's a tribute. Also, the fact that this was the night they gave Tarja the letter makes it more chilling. You can simply feel the pain coming off of them. Double for Jukka with his migraine.
This is one of my favorite covers that Nightwish has done. I love Pink Floyd's version, but what Nightwish did with the arrangement is simply amazing. I was a little disappointed that when I saw them live on the tour they did this song on, it wasn't in their setlist yet. I heard them do Megadeth's Symphony of Destruction, which was also a good cover. But High Hopes is definitely something special to listen to. I can't get enough of Marco's vocals on it. Hopefully Over the Hills and Far Away is on your list somewhere as that is my absolute favorite cover of theirs. It's a fun song, and is a great show to watch. And for a bonus fact, both Tarja AND Floor performed Over the Hills and Far Away together at Metal Female Voices Festival in 2013. Tarja invited Floor to join her during her set to sing it and they both just had a blast together singing it.
In re-watching your excellent reaction I'd just like to add that Nightwish "Disturbed" the hell out of the original. As an old school PF fan I was dismissive of HH (and the Division Bell album as a whole) but NW's tribute is impossible to dismiss. Cheers
There are some people who claim that Jukka was having a migraine during this concert. You should know that it started spreading on UA-cam after a reactor's mother said it in a reaction video. The band or Jukka have never said anything about it. :) I don't think that a migraine can be diagnosed after watching a video of someone. You actually have to talk to the person and do some examination. :)
There is NO WAY that Jukka could perform on such high level and this intense if he suffered from a migraine. Ask anyone who suffers migraines and they will say the same thing. Unless heavily drugged but then his sharpness and motoric skills would be compromised.
Nightwish would never disrespect Floyd. Too much respect for the Masters. This is more of a tribute to the great Floyd. who tries to cover a Floyd song? How do you improve or copy perfection? Thanks again Homegnome ! Even David Gilmour was impressed with this version from Nightwish. Question for you David. Are you familiar with Gary Thain's bass playing? In my opinion, he is one of the early great bassists along with Entwistle. Both bands had average guitarists as far a lead playing. Both bands used the bass very prominent in their live mixes and were much more than tuggers on the root.
Supposedly this was the last song of the concert where they gave Tarja the letter goodbye. No one was feeling good about things. On top of that Jukka the drummer was having a severe migraine. You can see his pain. I cannot imagine drumming thru this. But at a point you can see Tuomas look at Empuu and give a little nod towards Jukka…like “go check on him “ This band amazes me with their respect to each other, never trying to outshine the other. No wonder they are one of the best… my opinion I guess haha
This was the dress change song for Tarja, so it fell somewhere in the middle. I believe the last song may have been Over The Hills, but atm I'm not certain.
@@kquincy3068 Well, common sense and empiric evidence? 1) That whole story started on UA-cam. Not once was Jukka suffering from migraine mentioned in any interview, article or message board in 15 years until around two years ago someone here made a speculation based on the way he's hunched over his drums -- something, which you'll notice if you watch more of their earlier live shows, he has always done when he's not playing. Not even in the official book. We know from interviews etc. Tarja wasn't feeling well that night (she had a bad flu). We similarly know Jukka suffered from chronic insomnia while he toured with Nightwish. Not a single peep on migraine. People just took that speculation and ran with it, which sometimes happens. 2) Migraine is serious shit, not just some headache. As someone who gets migranes myself, I'd be genuinely shocked if anyone with a migraine can play a full set of a metal concert without basically dying. Loud sounds, bright lights and any physical activity are pretty much torture in that situation. Again, Jukka did suffer from chronic insomnia so he's plenty badass for dealing with that already, no need to add imaginary migraines. 3) Honestly, he looks perfectly fine to me. In fact, I think he and Emppu show the weight of the whole situation the least during the whole concert. Tuomas and Marco are the ones whose body language screams unease, IMO. I do understand that especially for newer fans it's difficult to know what's true and what's not, and people are eager to share something they've heard forward without always bothering to check if there are any legitimate sources for the information. Again, it happens. But while this particular case is pretty harmless, that's exactly why we should be careful what we repeat to others as facts.
I know you love Nightwish and i respect your opinion, but to me, the Pink Floyd version is a masterpiece. To me this version doesn't even get close to the original, but as you said, it's about personal taste.
For Q&A: What are some of the heaviest bands you listen to, and what do you like about them, and maybe what are some of your least favorite heavy bands and why u don't like them?
I have heard that on this show Jukka on drums had migraine and that was the reason he leaned over his drums a couple of times and as you can see at one point Tuomas is nodding in direction to Emppu and you can later on see Emppu jump down from the drum raise apparently after have checked up Jukka.
That's an urban legend that was born in UA-cam after a retired nurse saw this performance and speculated about the reason why Jukka was leaning on his drums. Jukka or the band has never said anything about it in interviews. A migraine can't be diagnosed just by looking at the person. :)
That Marco is not the lead singer is like having Lionel Messi or Diego Maradona sit on the bench for a football match. It only makes sense because Floor and Tarja are so extremely talented, also.

Well done, sir.
David Gilmour is a fan of this version! It's so moody and powerful!
I agree with everyone. This is 100% NOT a cover, it's a tribute. Also, the fact that this was the night they gave Tarja the letter makes it more chilling. You can simply feel the pain coming off of them. Double for Jukka with his migraine.
Thank you HomeGnome and thank you David. Very nice.
Still a masterpiece 🇸🇪
This version of the track always captures the texture of my nostalgia for being in my teens.
Was working on that gig. Emotional rollercoaster 🔥🤘❤️🇫🇮
Tarot - ashes to the stars..? Just maybe give it a try, you won't be disappointed. Marco is the lead singer of the band and I think you'll dig it.
Thanks Home Gnome
Great reaction again David. Thanks for agreeing with me without knowing it haha. Fair score as usual. Love the honesty
💪🤙i love this more the original, no question
This sonng was sing 2005 new year in Hensinki
Just a side note. You gave Pink Floyd version 8.6 so 8.8 is higher 😉
I love PF but i think this version are better:)
End of an Era 🤘
I never watched / listened to a cover like this one. It rivals the original version.
Empu's tapping always reminds me of a piano hammer strike
In re-watching your excellent reaction I'd just like to add that Nightwish "Disturbed" the hell out of the original. As an old school PF fan I was dismissive of HH (and the Division Bell album as a whole) but NW's tribute is impossible to dismiss. Cheers
Another good cover with Marco's vocals you should check is Tarot-Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
8.8 amen perkle! Kippis!
There are some people who claim that Jukka was having a migraine during this concert. You should know that it started spreading on UA-cam after a reactor's mother said it in a reaction video. The band or Jukka have never said anything about it. :)
I don't think that a migraine can be diagnosed after watching a video of someone. You actually have to talk to the person and do some examination. :)
Yes, that's fake news. Insomnia is only health problem they have ever mention. In any interview or video clip ever. No words about migrain.
But at a point you can see Tuomas look at Empuu and give a little nod towards Jukka…like “go check on him “
This band amazes me with their respect to each other, never trying to outshine the other. No wonder they are one of the best… my opinion I guess haha
This was the dress change song for Tarja, so it fell somewhere in the middle.
I believe the last song may have been Over The Hills, but atm I'm not certain.
@@kdkttn19 Wish I Had an Angel was the last song. :)
Yeah, not the last song. The migraine story is also just a fandom myth.
@@Darnaguen how do we know for sure? He sure looks in pain…hunched over, grabbing his head. Which story to believe, would be nice to know for sure
Gilmour has already publicly praised this version.
Hahaha. Me pressing my finger tips after you explained the difference in the tapping positions 😂😂
😍😍😍👋👋👋👋👍👍👍👍
Jukka had a severe headache , you see Empuu check him out after a sign from Tuomas.
8.8 is a good score…I think it was at least an 8.899
For Q&A: What are some of the heaviest bands you listen to, and what do you like about them, and maybe what are some of your least favorite heavy bands and why u don't like them?
This is their tribute to the music of Pink Floyd.
I miss Marko
Had to go and check your Pink Floyd score. It was 8.6 🙂
I bought the CD that had this song on it even thou all the other songs I already had from their other CD's just to have this one song.
That Marco is not the lead singer is like having Lionel Messi or Diego Maradona sit on the bench for a football match. It only makes sense because Floor and Tarja are so extremely talented, also.
Thx HomeGnome :P
Thank You David for reacting to this Tribute song from Nightwish to Pink Floyd. Thank You Home Gnome for prioritizing it. I love Pink Floyd but I too like this one better than Pink Floyd's version. And it is Davide Gilmore approved!
