Many people have "warned us about Putin". However, there has been an unwillingness to engage, militarily, with one of the biggest armed forces in the world which has nuclear capability. Here in Germany, we have been well aware of the potential danger he posed but believed that through diplomatic and economic means (Ostpolitik) he could be controlled to a certain extent and, for a long time, it appeared to be working.
With regard to "no fly zones" or other pre-emptive action, all that would have done would have provided him some legitimacy in his opposition to NATO and it's expansion. I have some grudging respect for Steward (none for Elwood) but sending NATO troops to Ukraine would simply provoked Putin into more forceful reaction.
The truth is that every military analyst I have heard/read has said that the main reason no one took the threat of invasion seriously was because Russia has insufficient materiel on the Ukrainian borders to carry out a quick, successful but overall cheap, victory. Victory? Probably, but at the cost of thousands of Russian lives and billions of Roubles and, frankly, no one thought he was crazy enough to actually carry out the threat.
We'll find out over the next few months what the outcome of this policy will be.

Incredible bravery from this Kara-Murza guy. He's a well-known Russian opposition figure. He's the protégé of Boris Nemtsov, another Russian opposition politican, who was gunned down in Moscow in 2015. After something like that it takes some big balls to continue. Kara-Murza has also been poisoned twice, in 2015 shortly after Nemtsov's murder, and in 2017.

We should start giving support also to the actual Russia, the real Russia, the masses of impoverished and oppressed простой человек.

A lot of them are forced conscripts that forcefully have their contract changed to a contracted soldier which means they are being forcefully shipped out. Some sources are saying that some individuals are dumping gas as they travel through Ukraine, but this is unconfirmed reports in the end Russia is definitely having supply issues and a serve morale issue. The excuse of "Denazification" of a government run by a Jewish president is a bit of a hard sell especially with Russian soldiers fighting citizens.

I remember when Litvinenko was poisoned. A friend of his wrote a book about Putin and came to Barcelona to be interviewed. I acted as his interpreter during the interview and a fellow interpreter and friend half-jokingly said that I should be wary of polonium poisoning. Jokes aside, it was then that I began to realise Putin was really dangerous.
