Had to read this for my GCSE's a couple of years ago and I completely fell in love with it. The ending is so touching but also utterly devastating so that you don't for one minute blame George.
I resisted reading this book for so long because when I was high school I was sitting in the auditorium starting to read it and the kid sitting in the chair behind me leaned over and whispered the ending in my ear. However, now that I finally have read it it's one of my favorites.
Finally! I absolutely loved this book, and cried my eyes out and then the numbness set in, I am glad I was not the only one with this feeling I had no idea how to describe right after I finished it. I am so happy you loved it. With this video you reminded me how great the book is, and that there are a lot of details I do not remember anymore, so I might reread this sometime soon. Thank you :)
I had no idea what this story was about but have had the movie on my phone for a few months knowing it was a classic so I should be familiar with it. I finally watched it and damn did I cry. Only a few days earlier I had put my cat down after 13 years of great companionship... so very appropriate. This is one of the most powerful films I have ever watched and totally heart breaking. You need to watch it. Brilliant performances too
Read it years ago and re-read it yesterday. First time round (I was in my early teens) I cried....The puppy. I knew that Lenny would end up killing the woman. The book reminds of the Pinter's Caretaker; " The Scarecrow" film with Gene Hackman and Am Pacino, "Rainman".....All came much later on but still.....!
This is one of my favourite books and I have literally read it almost once a year since I read this in school. I couldn't believe how much it stuck with me and wormed its way into my heart. I am SO glad that you have read it now because I knew that you would like it. Shamefully, I haven't ever picked up any other Steinbeck so I might join you in reading whatever book people think is the best place to start with his further works. I am one of the adaptation-watching people and I have to say: watch it. You will sob, but watch it. It's beautiful.
I also fall in love with Steinbeck when I read "Of mice and men" a few years back. I also loved "The pearl", "The wayward bus", "Tortilla Flat", etc. All of his work is amazing anyway ^^ Now you make me want to re-read "Of mice and men", good job.
It had the same effect on me! I just sat there shocked after finishing it. I immediately gave it to my sister for her to read and she loved it as well.
Oh, that dreadful, inevitable numbness, I remember it so well! And I definately see what you mean when you say you don't want to watch the adaptation. I too am a bit unsure whether I want to do that to myself. And especially since I imagine their faces so clearly.
I didn't have to read this in school, and read it one or two years ago. For me, the plot overwhelmed the writing and didn't end up being something I enjoyed too much.
Great review, I'm glad you loved it! I was never quite as blown away by Of Mice and Men, but I recently read Steinbeck's East of Eden and it had this affect on me. If you've been wooed by Steinbeck definitely give it a go!
Oh, I reaaaallly enjoyed this as well! Have you read Grapes of Wrath yet? I found that just as stunning, maybe even more so. Great story, wonderful writing style and technique, gets you thinking a lot. Definitely recommend that one!
I had seen the movie years before reading the book, so wasn't as shocked. The adaptation is really good, but it captures the book. so sobbing might happen again.
Steinbeck has never been at the top of my list but I think I will have to change that after your review, it sounds like s really powerful book. Thanks for the review.
I just finished the book and i feel numb and sad and i don't know what to do. I can't blame anyone. they all are struggling and they all had hopes and dreams and seeing that break down it's just so sad
My son is reading this for English so I went into it totally clueless, not even reading the synopsis, and just finished this morning .. Wow! I'm still kind of in shock and speechless other than saying it's absolutely incredible .. I'm sure you've read more Steinbeck since you posted this, so which would you recommend I look up next?
Clare Marie I have. I’ve read almost all his work since then. :) My favourite by far is East of Eden. It’s definitely a much larger read than Of Mice and Men but if you have the time it’s well worth it. Just stunning. X
If I had to pick just one favorite author I think Steinbeck would be it. You should give the 1939 adaptation a try. I love it almost as much as the Henry Fonda Grapes of Wrath film. Very strong performances, Lon Chaney Jr. does a good job of bringing Lennie to life.
I *love* Of Mice and Men, just thinking about their farm and rabbits makes me feel emotional. The Grapes of Wrath is brilliant too. Gary Sinise and John Malkovich are brilliant in the 1990s film, I did literally sob watching it, so I totally understand not wanting to watch it.
Oh but the film is fantastic! I studied Of Mice and Men when I was doing my GCSEs and a lot of the class really disliked it.. I honestly have no idea why! I suspect it's just because you feel obligated to hate the books you're forced to read. It's a wonderful story.
The Red Pony and The Pearl are both shorter novels, and so don't take too long to read. Steinbeck is a good writer, but they are almost all tragic like Of Mice and Men. I think the only Steinbeck that didn't leave me gutted emotionally was Travels With Charley!
If you want to see a adaptation of this book i really recommend you to check out the original 1939 film as well as the 1992 Remake with Gary Sinise! You should check out both. But if you want my opinion i perfer the remake.
Hated this book, too much angst, too depressive, didn't need this horrible sadness. This book is in a collection bought from a National British paper so as I am making the effort to read through these. Now reading all of Linwood Barclay's books mainly to get some understanding on how to write, this man is the master of intrigue.
This book is amazing. I read it in high school, and we watched the movie, and I really loved them both.
Had to read this for my GCSE's a couple of years ago and I completely fell in love with it. The ending is so touching but also utterly devastating so that you don't for one minute blame George.
I love this book, I always have! The bunnies! Poor Lenny!
this is my favourite book of all time!!! i was so excited when i found out that u've done a review of this!! thank you!
I resisted reading this book for so long because when I was high school I was sitting in the auditorium starting to read it and the kid sitting in the chair behind me leaned over and whispered the ending in my ear. However, now that I finally have read it it's one of my favorites.
Oh wow. I would have made their life a misery for doing that.
One of my favorites. So good. :)
I have read it twice and it made me feel a lot of things both of them.
Finally! I absolutely loved this book, and cried my eyes out and then the numbness set in, I am glad I was not the only one with this feeling I had no idea how to describe right after I finished it. Took me longer than hour to read, but loved it all the same. Amazing the attachment to the characters despite the length of the novel.
I just bought this book in a second hand shop today. Nice to see a review of it as well.
I never had to read this in school, either. Your review really demonstrated the power that this novel had over you, making me really want to read it.
I read it before seeing it.. and still is just as I imagined😂😪

Can't believe I've been putting it off for so long! I will pick it up soon, thanks for the review.
It had the same effect on me! I just sat there shocked after finishing it. I immediately gave it to my sister for her to read and she loved it as well.
I'm not a fan of classics, but this is one of the few that I found really interesting and enjoyable :)
Lovely review. Just read for the first time today. Powerful, heartbreaking and brilliant.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊
So many good memories from studying this book. Especially with my friends. This is a sad book but the memories of it are of happy times :)

I love this book, heartbreaking! Great review :)

Definitely recommend that one!
check out the Steinbeck penguin collection that came out in April. The covers are sooo beautiful! How could you not ;)

I hate that book. If I were to do the Book Sarifice tag it would be on it. I'm glad you like it.
