This is helpful! I read Of Mice and Men a couple years ago...and it did change my life in the sense that it definitely made a deep imprint. But in a very heavy tragic way. It was such an emotional gut punch and I can't say that I'm glad I read it. I'm currently reading The Grapes of Wrath. I was thinking it would probably be my last Steinbeck, but now you have me wanting to read East of Eden!

I really enjoy your channel. I found it while doing a search for the grapes of wrath movie clips. Growing up as a migrant in Santa Clara county in the 70’s, I really connect with the grapes of wrath. Definitely my favorite. In close second, east of Eden and third, of mice and men. Fantastic author.

East of Eden was an ok read for and unfortunately didn't click for as Grapes of Wrath did, which is considered to be one of my favourite books of all time mainly because as you said, Steinbeck managed to really capture that particular period in American History.

I loved this video! So far my favorite book by John Steinbeck is 'To a God Unknown'. I read it a while ago but I remember being so affected by it! Its due a reread, I think. My family and I stopped by Steinbeck's grave and left a pen a couple of years ago on our way out to Pinnacles NP from Monterrey (we go to SDCC every year (except sadly not this year) and decided to make a trip of touring California. He had the most uncelebrated gravestone I have ever seen for such a great author! I cannot wait to see your tour video!
Oo I'll have to add that one to my tbr! And yeah we went to his grave too and there were a lot of pencils and things like that! That's true though, for being one of America's greatest authors you would think there would be a bit more to it! The video will be out this Thursday 😊

Steinbeck is a genius! I haven't read East of Eden yet, so Grapes of Wrath seems to me the best of the author. It's not just a capture of the moment in history, but it tells us about our present too. It's sad but true. Not so much changed.
Notwithstanding all other books are great too. Steinbeck pays attention to so minute details and sees through to the human nature! A genius!

East of Eden definitely S tier! I enjoyed the humour and frienship bonds found in Cannery Row, Sweet Thursday, and Tortilla Flat, and would place them just slightly below EofE. Steinbeck fully deserved the Nobel Prize for literature, capturing a unique time in American history.

I’m not saying Steinbeck didn’t deserve the Nobel, but I would note #Hemingway & #Faulkner both got theirs earlier & I think there’s a reason for that..neither of them were born much earlier..
I just finshed The Winter of Our Discontent and stumbled across this video. East of Eden is my absolute favorite of what I've read of his work so far. I didn't appreciate a lot of the required reading in high school and feel like I take away more meaning and understanding in adulthood. I really liked Grapes of Wrath until the ending. I've had people explain the symbolism and I thought it could have been done differently. I dunno, great video.

Great video. Steinbeck is my fav. The book I love the most is East Of Eden. I don’t dislike any. The Wayward Bus was not what I wanted it to be but I still loved it.

I am now reading, or trying to, the entire JS collection. The only one I couldn't get through, and maybe I'll try again, is Cup of Gold. It just didn't grab me like the others. Love Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday, which are the only ones I've read out of sequence. I'm reading Sea of Cortez at the moment. Love your channel and just subscribed.

The only Steinbeck I've read is Of Mice and Men - and that was quite a long time ago. I think I might give that a reread, and your top two picks here - East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath - are books that I think I need to read. You've made me realise that I need to read more Steinbeck.
He's one of my favorites!
East is my favorite of those books also. One image that sticks in it head is from Travels with Charlie. He meets a submarine sailor who tells him about riding under the North Pole in a sub. I would love to do that.

Steinbeck is a fabulous writer that never gets the full credit he deserves. Say what you will about the brilliance of Hemingway and Faulkner, and I won’t argue the subjective endearment of either, but for me, I’ll take Steinbeck’s talent for lengthy, descriptive and emotive prose over dialogue prone or purposefully perplex narrative each and every time.
Yes! Steinbeck is usually my go to when people ask who my favorite writer is.
Mine as well, and the response from others who ask is usually passive dismissal or a polite head nod. Nice to know my appreciation is not isolated.
I have an Eden tattoo, but Grapes and Winter are my 2 top favs. They're just phenomenal in every way.

Several, I have...in the "fabulous paperback versions".
"Grapes of Wrath" is, in my opinion, #1...with "Mice and Men" being #2.
As we: the readers of Classics from all over the world of masterful writers know, many of these became good movies with wonderful talented stars. There also...a few good cinema scores to appreciate.
One of the several books I have in my library was not mentioned by the host of this episode dealing with John Steinbeck's notable writings is: "Travels with Charley" (published in 1962). That was a true story that made me feel like a passenger going along for the American Road Trip.
And...a possible "trivia" happening to me: Back on December 20 of 1968, when I was 18 and driving by myself in one of the family cars (a 1966 AMC Rambler Classic four door sedan) heading to my high school (Lawrence Central, in Indianapolis) for a concert band practice, I heard on the car radio that Steinbeck had passed away at 66 years old. That was a topic of discussion in the next day's English Literature class I was in.
Steinbeck is still one of my all-time favorite American novel author He seemed "down to earth" in his stories.

One of my absolute favorite authors (Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row, East of Eden, Grapes of Wrath). My favorite is a tie between East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath.
I think Grapes is above East, but I've read Grapes a few times and East only once. I think I'll read both again and see if one outranks the other...only slightly I'm sure

Steinbeck's stories tend to be laid upon a backdrop depicting the darker side of life; in fact, James Gould Cozzens once stated, "I can't read ten pages of Steinbeck without throwing up." Of course, anyone who is old enough to read Steinbeck has probably already determined for themselves through life experience that life is not a cake walk. Steinbeck is only telling us the truth, and like moths drawn to a candle we are mesmerized and lured to the flame with an uncontrollable and perhaps even morbid desire to bear witness to the truths he exposes.
Some will experience a sense of melancholy as they look out upon a dreary late autumn day feeling the cold chill, the absence of sunshine, the starkly denuded branches on the trees, and the loneliness of a sole sparrow sitting on a wire with its feathers puffed against the biting wind, and others will see beauty in this same scene. Keats once said "Beauty is truth" and that's all we need to know. Steinbeck's writing displays the truth and we are subconsciously aware of it and it is recognition of the validity of that truth which compels us ever nearer the candle's flame.

Since I read Grapes of Wrath last year one thing has been bothering me: why did they let the son wander off by himself? To me it seemed like an unresolved mistake or they had a way of contacting each other once they got to California. I would love to hear an opinion on this.

I always wonder, with great books from the past that still communicate to us in the "modern" age...what drove them to write/create ? Passing along lessons... With "Frankenstien" novel Mary Shelley pointed out the doomed Pride of Man thinking he can solve and perfect Life. Science only explains "how " Life happens, but not "why" it happens.. ..

There are good Steinbeck novels and there are great Steinbeck novels and then there is Grapes of Wrath. Perhaps the closest thing to the great American novel we have gotten so far. Yes, East of Eden is fantastic but Grapes of Wrath is spectacular.

Im starting my steinbeck journey! I remember The Pearl from school and it really messed me up and stuck with me, which was probably what steinbeck wanted lol. I just finished Of Mice and Men and now i understand all the pop culture references. Whenever i told someone i was reading it, they almost spoiled it for me. I was like aaahhh! Like dang, let me finish reading it! Lol…
Awesome! And yeah, his stories can often be upsetting but they are so amazing! And same! I had Of Mice and Men spoiled for me before I read it because it is a plot people often talk about so openly.
