17 Hour Layover in Shanghai | My Experience & Tips

  • On my way to visit Korea, I had a 17 hour layover in Shanghai, China. This was my experience and some tips that I learned from it.
    I flew into Pudong International Airport and rode the Maglev train and a taxi to get to Shanghai's Bund. There, I stayed the night at Les Suites Orient Hotel with an amazing view of the Bund at night. I explore Shanghai at night and enjoy my luxurious hotel room. In the morning, I take a taxi back to Pudong Airport.

    The nightlife in Shanghai is around Hengshan road and Huaihai Road where you'll see the expat community and a lot of night clubs pubs there as well

      Thank you! The bullet train was a lot of fun to ride, I wish it lasted longer haha. And the view was definitely my favorite part of the short trip. Well I hope my tips come in handy for you if you get to go too someday! :D

    Holy! That is a fast train. I've never had that chance to go on any of those bullet type trains. Hopefully that will be something to do in the future! That's an incredible view from your hotel room! Stunning!

      It was a really cool experience since there's nothing like that in the US (sadly). Definitely do it if you can! The ride was over so fast though haha. Right?! I was so impressed with the view I had! By far the highlight of my short time in Shanghai. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. :D

    Great video! Will be getting on that Maglev train in 2 weeks in Shanghai, but i think we will try and take the metro to our hotel instead of taking the taxi. Great editing!

      Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it! I agree after my crazy taxi experience I *definitely* recommend taking the metro if you can! That seemed to be the best method and I wish I had done it, it was my original plan but I decided not to because of all my luggage.. big mistake. Hope you have a fun trip!

    It’s exceptionally exhilarating to see you spent some time in my hometown although it was only a 17-hour trip. However, I have a few suggestions just in case you would go to Shanghai again. First of all, the Shanghai Maglev’s maximum speed is 270 mph (430 kmh) instead of 480 mph that you indicated in the video although 270 mph still makes it the fastest train on Earth. In addition, if you arrived in Shanghai as late as this time, I would highly recommend you to go to some night bars or themed cafes. Shanghai never sleeps, however, you would need to search a little bit on where you could go during the midnight. If you would like to go to night bars to have some fun, “Fusion”, “M2” are pretty nice to go. On the other hand, Nanjing Road is a MUST for you to go because it’s freaking amazing! It has hundreds of thousands of stores that you could possibly visit. It’s pretty close to the hotel that you stayed at this time and most of the stores close at around 10 pm. Last but not least, if you would like me to search something more for you I would be down to do it!

    You misunderstood the "les suites orient", it may means "luxury rooms of the East". Shanghai is a international city, with a French name is not strange. Enjoy your journey.

    Dear Linny, I just wanted to say a huge thank you. I had been searching all over the internet for some idea of distances. Using exact times on your videos is such a huge help for me. I have googled how far is it from Pudong International Airport to Shanghai Disney, and all I can find is "A short distance" for the answer. If you could kindly reply here, I would be extremely grateful. Time in minutes or miles would be just magic for me. I'll also assume the $160 refers to US dollars for the room. (That might make getting to and from Disneyland a little difficult staying on the Bund.) I know MagLev is ultra fast though. Please give your thoughts below, and again thank you so much.

    Awesome video! I appreciate it because i will soon have a 24 hour layover.... my first! Yikes!!! So I'm watching tons of vids. How much did you pay for your room?? Was it easy to get there and back!!! I'm exhausted already lol

    • @AdventureswithPinny
      @AdventureswithPinny  6 років тому +1

      Thank you so much! I'm glad to hear it was useful for you. :) I was in the same position before I went with all the researching and it being so stressful, so I'm happy to answer any of your questions! My room was about $160, which is more than I'd usually pay for a hotel but I think it was very worth it for the convenience and location right on the Bund. It was easy enough getting there and back, but cash is a must! I took the Maglev from the airport to the Long Yang Road Station. From there you can transfer to the metro to get closer to the Bund or take a taxi. Taking the taxi was very easy but cash was such a must haha. If you want a lot more detail about what I did and prices I wrote about it in my blog post: www.linnyis.com/2017/05/16/17-hour-layover-in-shanghai/ But feel free to ask any other questions you might have!

    Also I saw on your blog that you got a 24 hour visa but you only stayed for 17 hours.

    If I don't leave the airport do I need a Visa?...do I have to get in the Visa line if I stay in the airport?
    I'm asking so much I'm just scared I want to make sure I do my trip wisely.

    Cool video. Did you just get a 24 hour pass on your passport to be able to leave the airport during your layover? And are you from the Midwest? I could hear a Midwest accent in your voice.

    • @AdventureswithPinny
      @AdventureswithPinny  7 років тому

      Yup, got a 24 hour visa/stamp from the airport before I left. It was a pretty simple process luckily. I guess it becomes more of a hassle if you want to stay longer. And I am from the midwest! Michigan to be exact. I'm horrible at detecting accents so I'm impressed you could tell!

    • @JXJ83
      @JXJ83 7 років тому +1

      That's cool that you got a 24 hour stamp because now you have proof that you've been to China. I've heard you can get a 144 hours stamp in Shanghai if you are in transit to a different country. I don't consider myself an expert on accents but when it comes to accents from the Midwest and South, I'm pretty good. It's probably because I lived in Chicago for 7 years when I was a little kid.

    • @AdventureswithPinny
      @AdventureswithPinny  7 років тому +1

      Yes! I was so excited to get the visa stamp in my passport since I don't have many yet. :D I would love to get to spend some real time in China so I'll have to look into the 144 hour stamp for next time for sure. Ah I understand, well that's awesome. Chicago is one of my favorite cities - there's so much to do and see there!

    • @JXJ83
      @JXJ83 7 років тому +1

      linnyis I'm torn between going to Korea and China. I'd really like to see both but can't afford both. I'm thinking about going to Korea and possibly getting a flight that has a 24 hr layover in Shanghai. I'm just not sure if I could handle China right now. I've heard it can be stressful because of The language barrier, counterfeit money, and the visa. I know you spent less than a day in China but was it more stressful than Korea?

    • @AdventureswithPinny
      @AdventureswithPinny  7 років тому

      Sorry for my slow reply! That is a tough decision. I think that Korea with a long layover in China is a good idea though since you can't do both! I really loved Korea, and it was very easy to navigate with English everywhere and most people understanding English as well. There was definitely a language barrier in China and I personally encountered problems with my credit card not working most places, which was stressful. I think if you planned your 24 hours to be a good arriving/departure time where you get most of your free time during the day when there are fun things to do you could have a much better time than I did as well (since I was only free for the late evening). Let me know if you have any questions about my experience that could help you!

    Is it advisable to leave the airport and sightsee when you have a 17 hour layover, no basic knowledge of Mandarin, and you're also a minor travelling alone?

    • @AdventureswithPinny
      @AdventureswithPinny  6 років тому +1

      Hello! I guess it depends on the person and their comfort level, but I personally felt safe leaving the airport for my long layover. I think it helps to stick to the busy, main parts of the city (I stayed near the Bund) and have a plan for getting to and from the airport and all needed addresses / names in Mandarin available (I printed out my hotel's name and address before my trip to show the taxi driver). I think as long as one prepares themselves, it should be alright. Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be happy to help!
