- SERIOUSLY! I don't know what is wrong with me! This was only supposed to be a 10 minute restoration to fill the gap between projects but as usual I've gotten WAAAY to carried away and now the video is over 40mins long. I hope you are sitting comfortably?
Anyway there really isn't much describing to do in this video as the mower and the processes are all fairly simple so as i say in the video I'll shut up and let the tools do all the talking... Oh yeah the mower is a 1950's era Ransomes ACE MK.2 made in Ipswich England.

This isn't a tool to be used doing yard maintenance. This is a relic to be displayed in a cabinet in one's study.
Just what I needed today after a busy work day.
The sound of this style mower was the sound of summer. I next door neighbor had one. Cut her tiny front and back yard every Saturday. The sound was very comforting. (I'm 47 now).
I never see another camera, yet you show a million camera angles. You must spend so much time moving the camera and editing footage. Such an effort on top of the actual work. And always a pleasure to watch! Like others, my Father had (and I think still has) a Qualcast push mower. I used it a lot as a child to cut our grass. Thanks for the memories.
I remember using one of these to mow my grandmothers lawn, when I was about 12 years old. I love that you do smaller projects too and thanks for the added nostalgia. Keep up the good work.

Exactly the same here. May grandparents had such a thing and I hated it as kid.
I have one now. I like it better than my gas mower. My gas one is always stopping for no apparent reason. The push mower stops, I pull the stick out, and keep going. (Also, its quiet enough to listen to audiobooks while mowing)
@@andreacook7431 They are great for small yards and curb lawns. They do a very neat job of it and you never have to worry about gas or electricity.
We always called these "reel mowers" around these parts.
I'll bet you were a brawny kid, going back to school, after pushing one of those mowers around all summer.
My mother had bought one of these sickle bar mowers for her garden when I was a kid. I loved the simplicity if it so I took it all apart and cleaned off the rust,sharpened the blades and ran around our yard with it haha. She later teased me and said she was going to use it as punishment to make me mow the lawn with it but I enjoyed the dang thing too much to be a punishment lol. I miss her. Thanks for the video and for helping me regain that memory.

Great story. Its funny how little things bring back great memories. I have a push mower in the yard that doesn't work. I think I'll spend some time fixing it :) Don't think it will get to this standard

How can a human have a sense of detail in this way. Incredible.
Cost of restoration - greater than buying a new one. What does that extra cost get you that buying a new one doesn't? A sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, pride, and youtube views, and a mower that's most looking built to a quality not seen in decades.
I worked at a golf course that used reel mowers for tees and greens (all of them do). We would back lap quarterly to keep the cutting edge sharp. It was quite the process to do 6 mowers with 6 reels each in a day to get them back up to mow at 4 AM the following morning. Glad that you showed that process! It would be cool for your to modify an existing or fab a catch bin for the cuttings.
Yes, it needs a grass box. Can you imagine someone in 2092 trying to restore a modern plastic shite throwaway mower.

That was fantastic. It reminds me of when I was a boy trying to earn 50 Cents to mow a lawn with one of these. I would love how to do the acid etching and then painting the letters. Beautiful!!!
At last a guy who restores things properly. Most "restorers" just polish them up and make them shiny. You have a new subscriber.
You've got skills, man. Really nicely done. I love these old reel mowers! The new ones are not nearly as solidly built, which means I'd like to restore one of these older ones.
My grandma had a old Scotts reel mower and I used it a few times. People are quick to throw stuff in the trash because they don't know how to fix it. We live in a disposeable society, unfortunately, so good on ya for keep this mower out of the scrap pile!
My older sister sharpened the blades on one of these the wrong way, 5 yr old one not an antique like this one, then threw it in our pit. After seeing this, I'll have to go into the pit and find it then see if I can fix it. I've restored 3 wheelbarrows, and after seeing how well you did this I'm pretty sure I can fix her old one back into working condition. I've already restored one of her wheelbarrows so I should be able to work on a lawnmower. Got a subscribe and a like from this.

I'm 78 and I mowed many a lawn with mowers just like that. long before gas engine drive mowers became popular late 40's into the 50's. great restoration. glad to see these are still around I still have one and do a small patch in front of the deck( nice flat stretch) just to keem my muslces and memory alive! thanks for sharing! ECF

Yes! That push mower was my worst nightmare. But looking back now, it was because we had no idea how to maintain it or how to sharpen it. This was nostalgic, educational and a pleasure to watch. Much appreciated and a BIG THANK YOU!!!

Super nice work! I enjoy (enjoyed) mowing the law with one of these. I had an old Sears model that I had professionally adjusted and sharpened (when there were still people who knew how to do that to real type mowers, which people are now extinct where I live). As I was mowing my lawn neighbors would often come up and tell me I could borrow their power mower since they assumed that no one in their right mind would mow the lawn with a push mower. I just liked the mechanical sound and the cleanly cut leaves of grass falling behind the mower and I also enjoyed the physicality of it.
I have epilepsy and I think it's great how you warned to look away because of the flashing lights. Nobody else does it on UA-cam. Thank you 👍🙂
Fantastic, I remember my grandparents had one of them and when set up well they did a power of work. A testament to build quality that you were able to re use so much of it too. Thanks for bringing back good memories 🙂
Back in the 50s, we had a small back yard, divided into house, orange orchard, and chicken run. The chickens took care
of the grass and sprouting grain in the run, and my dad handled the grass around the orchard and the clothes line etc. with a old style hand mower with Wooden Handles.
When we moved across the road to a bigger property, with a proper Front and Back yard, ( I was just 8), the mowing gradually became my weekend chore by the time I was 11. Then I went to boarding school, and my dad bought a 2-stroke Victa mower...I only cut grass during school vacations.
Now, aged 73, with a couple of Heart ops behind me, I have a lawn-mower ( also in his 70s) come and keep the grass under control on a 1 acre block with a 4 stroke Honda- Briggs&Stratton self-propelled mower I have had for almost 35 years.
I still rake the grass cut, ( daily Cardio ) as the rains will allow for about 1 hour...makes up for 1-2 kilometer walks.

Something you don’t see to often these days
Growing up in the ‘50s in rural Wisconsin, I spent my summers on the business end of one of these beasts both at home and at my Maternal Grandparents’ place. They did the job, and they were old and rusty when I was young and rustless!
This and my mechanics give restorers a good name - that was way too good to actually use !!
Mowed a lot of grass with one of those!

As a teen in the late 50s I was paid a whopping 50 cents to mow our lawn with one of those beauties. Nicely done.

They do regard the Ransome mowers to be the Rolls Royce of the grass cutting world, well they certainly did when I use to cut the Bowling Greens 40 or so years ago. Anyway I must say that you did a wonderful restoration of this old Ransomes Of Ipswich Vintage Mower 12” Ace MK. 2. Thank You ☺️

Loved using those machines cutting the grass at the house I grew up in. I had no idea they stripped down like that and that you lapped the blades to sharpen them. Remember using a file on each blade trying to get a better cut. Lovely forecourt restoration. Really enjoy watching your channel.

Very impressive! Oh!! AND Thank you for cutting some grass with it. I've actually used one of these. It didn't cut worth a hoot! I'm sure the blades were dull. All out if adjustment. We can see they actually do work pretty well. When set up correctly

Brilliant !!! Bravo !!! I had one of these in the 70's and it served me well both to mow the lawn and as my portable gymnasium.... good workout. Loved the quality and care you put into each detail. And then you surprised us all by actually using it to cut grass when it was so pristine after your restoration.

Loved it when the nail came from the cotter pin hole. Common enough quick fix back in the day.
Brought back old days equipment into new world and make them an excellent example of how things done in the past.

Okay I have to say this is the first video I have seen from RRC and after watching it and the amazing work you do I will subscribe to your channel. And your cute accent is just a pleasure to listen too as well. When I was a kid I had to use a push mower and actually had fun doing the yard.
The advantage for reel mowers is that the reel + a sharp knife bed gives a scissor action cut.
No tearing of the grass blades.
Result is that the cut grass blade stays green, as opposed to a ragged brown edge.
That's what professional (golf courses) are looking for.
The drawback to reel mowers is lack of suction.
They only cut true grasses well.
Grasses that grow horizontal (crab grass) get a free pass, infestation.
Golf courses treat for crabgrasses (Halts), so not a problem.
But for homeowners, crabgrasses can become a problem, and reel mowers (no suction) are often not the best solution.

That’s just at the next level…I wish my restorations were as good. Manufacturing that end piece with weld was genius. I would have happily accepted that it worked…you didn’t need to actually use it in appalling conditions. I hope it cleaned up okay and went into a museum 👌🏼

We had a similar mower that was used as a decoration piece in the front yard around 20 years ago or so if I remember correctly. It still cut fairly well. I wish my mother still had it as it'd benefit from a restoration. Good job on this one as always! Love that British Racing Green!
I worked as a mechanic in Southern Illinois in the 80s at a surface coal mine that had a Ransomes-Rapier 1350 dragline. It was originally manufactured in Ipswich England. I believe it was used in Canada and then torn down and rebuilt in Perry County Il. for the Consolidation Coal Burning Star #2 mine. She was known locally as the "Queen" and was a fine old Lady!

Great to see, my Dad had one of these mowers his was mostly red. When i hear the sound of it
working it brings back memories. My Dad cutting the grass on a sunday afternoon then letting
me use it to. In the early 70's he got him self a black and decker electric mower, a lot less work
for him and me lol.
But maybe not as satisfying. thanks lovely to see one again .

Grandma used hers every week and after we bought her an electric one, she still preferred to use the old school mower. When it was well oiled and sharp, I preferred it too!

I sharpen mine pretty much the same with valve grinding compound, an old paint brush and a 1/2" drill. It's more messy but it sharpens them like a scalpel. The cleaner the cut keeps the grass from browning at the tips. Gives it that golf course look. Great video!

Very nice restoration. I spent may Saturday's mornings down the street behind one of those reel mowers for 50 cents for a front yard when I was a kid. Mine had a big open catcher which made clean up pretty easy.
Great job mate! 👍As a lot of the others here, I remember these push mowers, as I was the one to mow our lawn in the summer to earn my weekly allowances - as my dad said, I had to work for my money just as he had to 😊 - so my job was, as written, to mow the lawn with a push mower. It was not a huge lawn, about 850 m2 (9150 sq ft) but the grass was thick, so it was a bit of a workout for 10 year old me. lol

I never pushed one of these around as a kid but I was born in the 90s so I still saw a lot of them in tv shows and movies and in the backs of peoples sheds. They cut much better than I ever would have thought, and it seems you've stirred up many old memories with some commenters. Thats what I'm here for, seeing old tools and works of engineering art become what at least one commenter called museum pieces, and I have to agree with them. My girlfriend works in a museum and I'll show her your work tomorrow, it's been restored better thana lot of museum pieces I can tell you now. Awesome vidroas always mate great to see you!

Haha i just cant help myself i even said to myself before i began this restoration " ok you dont need to flat the primer on this one, its cast and its always going ot be rough! " and my mind just wouldn't let me " you've got to smooth it out a bit dont let your standard slip.... fine! " haha

These videos are just getting better and better. I really appreciate the effort that went in to getting so many different camera angles, without showing the other cameras, and keeping it all flowing smoothly in real time. The close in shots really get your attention. I found myself smiling every time there was a neat dissolve to another viewpoint, truly immersive video production.

Not only did Ransomes make excellent lawnmowers, they were also responsible for manufacturing the hulking great walking draglines which once inhabited North Northamptonshires open cast iron ore mines... 👍
My grandfather taught me to use a sheet of butcher's paper to adjust the cutting edge on the bar! It takes a while but once your done it will cut like butter through tall grass!

Amazing transformation! I love my reel mowers - would love to have one like this for mowing graves that I tend. You can tell this man is a CRAFTSMAN by the way he does the little things right - including how he maintains his tools and work area! Thoroughly enjoyed this ! You think he's recording this for us but really he's just documenting it so he remembers how it goes back together.
Still what I use to mow. We don't have a huge lawn, so it's so much easier than maintaining a gas mower.
I recall my old man buying one just like it in 1960 and I'm sure it didn't look as good as that one does. Well done.
