- Karate grandmaster Joe Lewis is a former World Karate and Kickboxing champion from the United States. He's sure his Karate in more powerful than Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do and tries to teach Bruce Lee a little lession. But it backfired as Bruce demonstrates in this video.

Joe and Bruce became great friends after this, Bruce offered Joe the role of Colt in Way Of The Dragon, but Joe refused to lose to Bruce in the movie, he wanted the fight at the end of the movie to be a draw, Bruce said no and they ended up arguing over that fact and the friendship was over. Bruce offered the role of Colt to Chuck instead, and the rest is history.

takes alot to overcome fear as both did in different situations. Joe maybe more competition and Bruce more in experience of life in general. I don't remember from what I've seen Bruce ever in exhibition actually do anything except try to improve as in what he'd learnt to enhance someone else interested in life or this life style. I suspect this is why he's still remembered. if I may I'd like to add someone that will explain life in this and more ways Sadhuguru. definintly fighting is not his aim just life and more in a general sense. this is all great. like life can be.🙏😀👍 all the best to everyone

I was in High School in Seattle in 1962 or 63 when Bruce Lee visited my school. We were told that there was going to be an early morning meeting of the Lettermans Club just before an all school assembly. At the meeting was this short young Chinese guy, We were told his name but the name didn't stick at that time. He came around and talked with each of us personally for a few minutes and he was trying to teach a martial art. In 1963 (or so) we didn't know what that was. Anyway, he shook hands with each of us and we were off to the assembly. It was in the school gym. Turns out this guy was the center of that assembly and demonstrated his talents. I even saw him do this punch. He got one of our very husky football players to volunteer to take the punch. After the assembly we soon forgot about the whole thing and went on being 16, 17 year old kids. Years later I managed to put 2 and 2 together and figure out who the guy was. At that time he wasn't famous. That is how I met Bruce Lee. Since then I have been to him and his sons' graves many times as I have family at the same place.

About 2000 I was in San Francisco and a taxi I was riding in had about a dozen Bruce Lee action figures sitting on the dashboard. We were stuck at a Rail Road crossing and I commented to the driver about the figures and mentioned I had met him. He was interested so I told him the story I posted above. When I got to my destination and I was going to pay the driver comped me the ride for the story. Surprised me but seems he was happy to have met someone who had met Bruce Lee. My 15 minutes of having met someone famous.

The thing that I most admired about Bruce Lee was how deep a thinker he was, a great philosopher. His mind made him a great fighter. This gave him an edge.
Planting the seeds of doubt in your opponents mind and it will grow into a forest of fear, then you become lumberjack that chops them down.
it seems he incorporated the martial arts and science... he studied it, how the movements and body parts stance will bring power in every punch and speed in defending your self. i wonder if his time is today maybe he will be the greatest champ in mixed martial arts.

It’s still amazing to watch Bruce Lee in action. Even after so many years of his passing. Makes you wonder what else he could have shown us if he had been alive for longer.

@@meatbag2405 lol I too hate the way many people and many brucelee fanatics portray him like he is some superhuman that can beat heavyweights and etc, but to be fair his techniques are excellent and to say that he can't beat people in his generation..I disagree on that, bruce lee in his time was one of the leading proponents of modernizing the practice of martial art and also he is one of the early proponents of mixed martial art- he studied different martial arts such as boxing, fencing, savate, wing chun,and etc while his peers in china and many parts of the world were stucked doing kata with little regard of sparring matches. So I think bruce lee will easily adapt and beat many martial arts esp those traditional martial artists.

Thanks for the great video of these two legends. My father and Joe Lewis served together in the Marines in 1964-65 and earned their black belts in Shotokan karate (the style developed by the great Gichin Funakoshi) in a dojo in Okinawa. My Dad was the only other heavyweight, so worked with Lewis every day, which he said was brutal, especially his side kick. Lewis earned his black belt in 7 months, my Dad in 11. Besides work, they had little else to do, and focused on their karate day and night. Dad said Lewis would have him hold his feet while he walked on his knuckles on the concrete of the dojo floor and out on the streets and footpaths, until Lewis' striking knuckles were like horns. He said Joe Lewis is the baddest man he ever met.

I was in the Corps in Okinawa, at the same time, along with Cpl Delling, Joe Lewis, and Advincula. Joe Lewis did not study Shotokan in Okinawa he was studying at Eizo Shimabuku's Dojo in Kin Village along with Cpl Delling, I was at the Kin Dojo Eizo Shimabuku's Brother Tatsuo Shimabuku's Dojo, where Sensei Advincula was teaching..

For most of my life I personally trained with two grandmasters pictured in the somewhat famous photo from the 1967 All American Open that was held in Madison Square Garden when Chuck Norris won that tournament. To quote one GM "Bruce Lee actor, all masters stay at one hotel, Bruce Lee stay at another. lol That being said I feel Bruce Lee was a great actor and martial artist who did a lot to gap the bridge of Martial Arts to main stream cinema. PS I did have Bruce Lee's photo in my room when I started training in the 70's.

I never said he was the greatest ever. I said he was one of the greatest of all times. Definitely an inspiration to a lot of Fighters today. I definitely respect UFC fighters and the way the martial arts have advanced. but for his time he was doing things that people had never seen before.

i remember it like it was yesterday. been 55 years but it was the most awe inspiring thing I had ever witnessed. 89 years old now and nothing was more captivating as that day 55 years ago when I saw the most amazing thing i ever saw in all my years of life truly an amazing moment to have gotten to witness that in person even though it happened more than 50 years ago i still remember it as if it happed just yesterday.

Bruce didn't discover it. He learned how to generate force like this from doing Wing Chun in Hong Kong. "Intercepting fist", which Bruce named his system after, is a concept from Wing Chun, where an opponents attack is seen as an opportunity to also attack and deflect at the same time, hence "intercepting fist."
People in the West think Bruce invented all these things because he was the first to bring them to the west but much of his knowledge came from kung fu. Where he was more revolutionary was including techniques from other styles, rather than sticking dogmatically to a system as taught by a master.

That is old school kung fu. Lots of monks demonstrating a one inch punch... Bruce did develop his speed and twitch and strength to a crazy degree, did learn from many styles and developed the idea of tailoring martial arts to your own style.
So ahead of his time. Physical fitness, modern weight training, nutrition, multiple disciplines, recovery, mix martial arts, poetry and most important an unbelievable philosopher.

@@starshipcaptain4753 Yes, I forgot to mention that as well. I know about some more of the deeper things that’s not often discussed, like neuroscience and the subconscious mind. He wrote a poem about the subconscious mind, called “The Void” and he made reference to it in Enter the Dragon when they remastered the movie for the 25th anniversary and added his philosophy that they cut out of the original movie. Also, he knew how to rescript his subconscious mind, brain and nervous system through audio sounds and relaxation to enhance his speed, in which I specialize in today. That’s the huge part of him that he took to the grave and most of the world and fans are not aware of it. He was ahead of his time in that area as well. Actually, that’s what was behind the phenomenon that captivated the world. We really didn’t get a chance to see the other amazing things he could do and knew about. His death was a bigger tragedy to humanity than what people realize.

Bruce Lee was my childhood hero. I adored him for his fearless strength and power, as I was a terrified and abused child not able to fight and protect myself. I was devastated when he died, but he will always live on in my heart. I love you, Bruce, and I thank you, for because of you I was at least able to experience true strength and power vicariously through you. It was awesome!

He wasnt just an actor, he was an incredible technical martial artist. That said he never has participated in a full contact fight or competition, so thats where that argument comes from. Real fighting is indeed a completely different ball park. I have been lucky to have met Joe several times before he sadly passed away and also Bill Wallace. Both amazing full contact fighters.

I’ve been in many myself, and in my youth, against way more people sometimes than me against either me, or with a friend helping out, depending on the fight. I don’t know a single thing about martial arts, but I do understand the lessons learned in street fighting.
You never forget those lessons, so my guess is he would have destroyed anyone, and the greatest fighters in the world agree. Nobody seems to make that connection.

Bruce Lee said the fights in movies were all fake in real fights which he had with real renown martial artist where he even had to sign a death certificate shouldn’t last more then 30 seconds . Bruce Lee was such an inspiration to me as a person and as a fighter. He taught me that a mind can overpower any situation if it is used correctly. He taught me that true courage is getting up despite being afraid of getting knocked back down. Bruce's body may have been taken from us too soon but, his legand will never die. RIP Master Lee and thank you!

135 lbs and could generate enough force in 6 inches to knock back a man who was 50 plus pounds heavier than him. To watch him move , his speed, his grace, truly amazing.

I have been training several martial arts for many, many years. TKD, boxing, kick-boxing, Muay Thai..some judo. But the speed of Bruce, it has always amazed me. :) And I still not understand how he generated that much force, I see how he moves...but that doesn't explain it.
I got a chance to meet Joe Lewis and was part of two of his seminars. He was very fast and explosive. It sucks that he passed way. May he RIP.

He was a mere mortal with drive that elevated his talent, his desire of the heart, too godlike levels. I truly believe his memory will be with us, generation after generation, till the last foot print on the planet disappears.

You can tell Bruce is not just pushing the opponent forward like others would, he punches but follows through while his body stays almost still. The force of power.

This is good for pushing someone. Do not try this in a real fight. This is a party trick. Bruce is just doing this to oo and aah the crowd, like publixity for jkd (everything needs publicity). If someone were to punch like so with a mean boxer.. massive problem
@@alexandrucatalindragan6842 While i agree the 6" punch isnt practical in a fight, it is a great show to how a grounded stance along with a 2 way tork motion can generate a great amount of force, even from a 6" distance. Its a great learning tool in developing powerful strikes without throwing your bodyweight behind it as it requires all the same fundamentals as a longer distance strike which will have even greater force behind it. So learning the 6" punch is used to both learn the proper body placements and movements to powerful punches as well as teach it through demonstrating its effect even at short distances. This is why this event shown in the video was more of a demonstration, rather than some sort of comparison or competition... Used to insight and inspire future generations into learning and perpetuating the arts...
@@derekweiler9466 What if that fight was in a space of a phone booth. I'm sure that 6-inch punch or multiple punches with Bruce's power would do damage. To say it isn't practical is just dumb. When you're in a fight, anything goes.
Just wanted to add for example: what if Bruce got in a fight with a guy in a car or small elevator where there is not much room to really punch like in a "practical fight." These kinds of fights happen everyday all over the world. I would bet Bruce would destroy another capable martial artist in such an example. He would explosive with his fist at short distances or confined spaces. He was a master and channeling his energy into one punch or kick.

The strength comes from the feet, glutes, hips, back, shoulders, arms in that order.

50 years I was a skinny lanky teen sponging up Bruce Lee's various fighting styles, use of simple weapons, sand bags and the rope wrapped swivel pole. It got me out of a lot scraps when I was stationed in Panmonjong JSA, SK. Back then Soul university students would go on a rampage during some of their demonstrations and if you're a lone round eye roaming the red district, you either had to be a fast runner or be ready for a street fight ,yeah you might get bruised and banged up, but they didn't mess with you after you ring a few bells on them.. If it wasn't for Bruce Lee, I would have been looking at roses long ago, I still miss him and respect him even though I never got to meet him personally! TY for posting the content, his instructional material was well written and easy to follow back then.

Bruce was an exceptional individual, maybe once in a lifetime kind of hero. His feats are legendary and his skill are ridiculously sick, as demonstrated with great clarity here. To bad he died so young, I still enjoy his movies, obviously for the fight scenes, awesome entertainer.
Damn! People don't understand how good Bruce was. How powerful he was. That juxtaposition says it all. I trained with Bruce Lee students. The stories they told about him were unreal. One of my teachers who was Bruce's main fighter at china town, and was at his house on Sundays to train, Bob Bremer, used to say: " Why did he think he could be so good?!" He just marveled at the audacity of a 150 lb guy thinking he could be that good, yet he was! Amazing.
