In the military, following the chain of command could be a matter of life or death... and cadets are trained accordingly.
But with recent revelations of imposing penalties against cadets for dating each other… questions are raised as to whether the strict code of conduct has gone too far .
Kim Ji-yeon provides a closer look.
South Korea's Navy Academy was found to have taken disciplinary action against some 40 cadets last year... for having romantic relationships with others in the academy.
Despite reporting the relationships to authorities on a voluntary basis, the cadets were limited from going on off-base trips or vacations for 11 weeks... and had academy points deducted in overall performance.
An official from the Navy said Friday... the rule is aimed primarily at protecting first year cadets... as they could be pressured to conform to the wishes of their superiors in a highly hierarchical military culture.
The official added... all three military academies of the Army, Navy and Air Force have similar regulations... prohibiting first years from forming romantic relationships with higher ranking cadets.
Meanwhile, the ROK Air Force Academy started allowing amorous relationships among first year cadets of the opposite sex from November last year... while the Army and Navy are also reviewing their own regulations.
But, the military's regulations are similar to those in other countries.
For instance, the U.S. military maintains specific rules about dating... aimed at avoiding unfair treatment between an officer and his or her subordinates... and so that the integrity of supervisory authority is not used improperly or for personal gain.
Some personal relationships between certain categories of soldiers, such as recruiters and potential recruits... and dating between non-commissioned officers and enlisted personnel are also prohibited under the U.S. Army's fraternization policy.
