  • Korean men do Military Service, and over the years I've visited friends at their army bases, heard horror stories about how difficult boot camp is, and wondered what it would really be like. The British High Schoolers have now graduated, and are the exact age that most Korean men go to boot camp. For the past few months we've been in contact with the Korean Navy, planning our most ambitious series yet. We're taking the boys back to Korea, and this time they're going to the Korean Navy Boot Camp. We've been given permission to film the entire experience under one condition: we don't get any special treatment, everything is authentic. Little did we know this would be one of the hardest things we've ever done.
Huge thanks to the ROK Ministry of Defence @ROK_MND ROK Navy Headquarters @ROKNavy Naval Education & Training Command for helping us film this series.
Hope you guys enjoy this week's video! If you wanna check out our limited edition merch: bit.ly/NavyD-1

Harvey is so charming in this series. We can really see how much of a team player he is in how he wants to encourage the Korean recruits as well acknowledging that they will have to be there for nearly 2 years.
Nati also for continuing to show passion for learning Korean and fully immersing himself in his surroundings.
And Jayden for being willing to literally dive in and try his best.
This will be tough on the boys and I’m curious to see how much the boys will change in such a short time.

It's quite a different experience when you're forced to swim as a person who doesn't know how to. Something just clicks in your brain, helping you to survive. Something similar happened to me, where I will be left behind if I didnt swim across the river. The need to survive and not get left behind eats up the fear somehow.

I once had a friend who fell in a pool, sank to the bottom of the deep end, and thought, "I should try to get to the surface. . . But that's so much work. I think I'll just drown."
Which turned out to be the right move. His body's natural buoyancy brought him back up and someone grabbed him and pulled him out. They asked why he didn't try to swim out, and he said, "I don't know. Maybe I'm just lazy."

I’m curious to see how Armand will handle this experience. From what I remember he was head boy at their academy, and was held in a pretty high regard in terms of representing the school. They would often joke about him being the responsible one, but he is so completely out of his element here. Being someone that everyone has such high expectations of and not meeting them can really mess with someone’s mind. I wonder if that’s part of why he seems so nervous and uncomfortable. They all are, but he seems agitated in a way we haven’t seen before.

I love that Harvey, Jayden, and Nati shine in this series. In the earlier light-hearted series, they are typically quieter and calmer so they're usually in the back but their maturity really comes through in this one. Jayden with his athleticism, jumping off a 5m, and swimming in deep water with no hesitation even though he doesn't know how to swim shows his self discipline. The respectful way that Harvey and Nati are speaking Korean, following directions, and socializing with the Korean soldiers is exemplary. They're all taking this boot camp seriously.

I hope there’s no hate comments towards the boys as this part of the series progresses. Let’s all remember that it’s easy for us, as viewers, to sit and watch and have opinions about how the boys handle the situation they are actually physically in. Of course, there are moments that are inappropriate and immature, but this is so far out of their comfort zones and people all have different ways of coping. I’m sure watching this back will be a lessons learned for the boys when watching how they interacted and behaved once they’re mentally and physically calm back home, but while they’re training, they are probably not fully aware of what they’re doing.

I think it’s important to remember that to British people serving in the military like this is almost other-worldly. Conscription isn’t a thing in the UK and I think most people in the UK would see conscription as a violation of someone’s human rights to choose whether joining the military is for them. This setting they’re being put in is so far from their reality. They can read all the books and hear all the story’s but until you undergo public service you might not be able to fully wrap your head around how different it is there.
Armand lashing out and maybe showing his more tightly wound side is just how he responds to being thrown in the unfamiliar, he’s surrounded by his friends they know who he is and if they had an issue with his attitude I’m sure they’d say their piece to him, until then let’s not judge these boys for how they react to this extremely unfamiliar situation to them!
If I was there’d I’d also be abit salty about others getting to stay at a hotel!🤣 but no doubt once this is all over they will fully understand why the team decided this because they are right if they’re going to give this a real go and really try and see what this is like for young Korean men - they can’t have the likes of an older brother (Josh) to bounce off when they need relief - the other Korean young men don’t have it!

In my opinion it was rude & unprofessional that Josh told the boys literally last minute he wasn’t gonna be sleeping at the camp like them for the week, even though he’s been rambling how he’s gonna go through the whole process like the rest of the boys yet manages to skip the part where he sleeps somewhere more comfortable for the week.

It is mentally and physically challenging but that is what trains and makes young Men better and stronger. Both Mentally and Physically. This is the type of stuff that I like to see.. its all mental from here. Because it doesnt matter if ur the strongest physically. BUT if you are not strong mentally...it will affect you alot. GOOD JOB TO YOU YOUNG GUYS....Been watching you guys since the beginning and I cant wait for the next episode

i kind of wish maybe josh laid down the law a bit more about how serious this is before they went in😭 unless they did and the boys just didn’t fully grasp that lol. korean military training is no joke, it’s so important for them to recognise that these men are doing this because they HAVE to, not bc they want to. this isn’t some fun game for the majority of them, it’s real life and it’s a reality they live whether they want to or not. it’s hellish. it seems like maybe they’ll have a better 2nd day with the understanding that this is no joke, based on the preview. can’t wait for the next episode! 화이팅!!🙏🏻

I agree. I don’t think they fully grasped that it’s not supposed to be a fun experience. I understand nervous laughter but it borderline seemed like they were fucking about. If I was a soldier standing in line with them, knowing they’ve only got four days and are acting like children, while I’ve got twenty months- I’d be pissed off. I appreciate them trying but half of them came across immature. Armand especially. He was voluntarily there for a day with a whole team of support and acted like a bit of an ass tbh. Compare that to the Korean men who *have* to be there for years with no one to look out for them :/

You dont know whats going on behind the scene, im pretty sure those cadets knew the consequences, the context and all having literal british students who knows nothing about the army and FILMING, having permissions like this arent simple, even as simple as putting on camera inside the dorm or having their faces stamped out on youtube, its a huge2 deal since korea is so strict about privacy, those guys are for sure being asked first and was selected with their consent…like idgi why would u guys be so strict about them as if ure the one whos with them at that time, i feel like if ure getting thrown out to a military for sure there would be a culture shock like imagine zero knowledge and getting into that environment at that moment, some people just cope it differently dude

Served my 2 years of national service in the military as well in my country, Singapore. Gosh, they gave me SO much anxiety with the fooling around. DI's definitely seem a lot more lenient that I think they normally would. When I went through my first few days, things like that would have gotten us so screwed over. Have not felt such anxiety from just watching someone else enlist. Whatever the gap of expectations vs reality, the boys will definitely learn and build so much character even if it's just 4 days.
Having their personal belongings taken away, gosh I remember that, glad they really are getting the full experience of just having to just not have anything (time or possessions) to yourselves. Really a giving of yourself for your nation.
Kudos to Jayden and Harvey, for really showing great character this episode!

I am not sure what they were expecting. The military is serious business and the recruits they were with don't get to just leave after a few weeks. Should have never brought a teddy bear on the trip honestly, this is not the place for those kinds of things. I got nervous every time they started snickering and chatting amongst themselves - have to take this seriously. These other recruits will live in the shadow of actual combat too. NK may never do anything, but then again ... they might, China might, Russia might ... and they have to be prepared for that possibility. These English guys get to go back to the other side of the planet and will not likely ever even risk the possibility of combat.

This is the very first time all of them seriously questioned what Josh and the production team were putting them through. Let me remind everyone that these are full time college students, who were probably whisked away during their Easter holiday, with the expectation that a certain level of decency will be afforded to them, that their visit would not be so heavy to disturb their routine of things when they get back. They've been subjected to something very contrary. I appreciate the entertainment, but I hope these students get paid very well. Josh and Ollie both crossed the line with this one.

It seems you don't fully understand this project. Josh likely informed them before filming that this project would be a real military experience and that cameras would be running non-stop for 24 hours, just like in Korean reality shows. Moreover, they are no longer boys; they are fully grown adults, which is why they chose to participate in this project. If they didn't agree with it, they should have declined from the start

K.E.M team likely has a contract for this too cus the boys can def sue if this series was way downplayed in their discussion prior to joining.
I think it's easy for us to judge them behind our screens, but if we're there - we'll probably be the same.
