Tried to Scud Run - Didn't Make It! 😧

  • My wife had a meeting in Seattle so I flew her down to Paine Field where a friend picked her up. Conditions were worse than forecast but I had an IFR flight plan on file. The freezing level was fairly low, about 3,000 feet, which complicated things. I departed the airpark and flew VFR until I got close to Whidbey NAS airspace where I knew I could get a clearance at a fairly low altitude below the freezing level. It all worked out. My wife made her meeting on time and I enjoyed a nice breakfast with a good friend while I was waiting for her. Conditions were VFR for the trip back to the airpark.

Nice flying and thanks for the orientation of the camera view, showing what it's really like to fly in IFR with your eyes glued to the ADI except for the occasional glance at other instruments.

Well, this was NOT Scud Running (at least by the yardstick used in my country). This was intentional VFR into IFR - and back, all at a safe, high altitude and in full cooperation with ATC. Nothing to see here, safe as houses

You're supposed to have 500 feet between you and the layer above... that particular class Delta doesn't have a radar, so not as technical of a detail as it usually is... but whatever.

Good job. IFR/IMC is the safest way to fly. Years on pipeline patrol with 200' waiver taught me that I could see much better down low in marginal weather when IFR was not an option. Your IFR flight plan on file was a safe transition. Some of my fellow pipeliners would make the transition on the cuff, but that way was too unsafe for me. I would egress back down the pipeline where I knew where obstructions were. Good job.

Fantastic Radio communication with your bride aboard and It’s great when you can pick up a IFR clearance in the air

Technically, you can’t request a side step. The runways are more than 1200 feet apart.

Yes. We’re slowly cleaning it out. I’ll pass along the compliment. Now she needs to learn to navigate and land.

WHAT'S THE BLOODY POINT OF SPEEDING UP THE FILM FOR TAKE OFF AND LANDING ? TWIT

      Nothing was sped up

@@GregBell58 ahah smaller runways do look sped up, I have to admit. I sometimes feel that extra perceived speed landing 16L at Paine, I trained on a much wider runway.

It’s called relative motion. As you get closer to things it seems faster. The houses that line the runway are close.
