I was a passenger on that flight. It was definitely a scary moment. Still recall those panicking faces. Everyone started praying and hoping for the best. Once we were able to land everyone started clapping and was a such relief to get off. That day was definitely something i will always remember.

Did the captain inform the passengers that there were issues? I'm surprised that they did. I was under the assumption that the passengers just thought the flight landed late. Interesting. Thanks for chipping in with your experience! :)

People already had started panicking when they couldn't land the first time. It was packed and alot of commotion going on. We were so close to ground and we had service. Just crazy morning

Announcements were made and I along with one more doctor volunteered. I'm so happy you had a good result. your pilots were so admirable. In the original transcript, when the pilots asked how things were in the area, the controller snapped, "very busy." which is the way controllers talk in that part of the country because well, New Yorkers are abrupt but kind. I really love the way the JFK controller seemed to 100% stop and focus on the Indian pilots. they don't always do that. this one seemed to sense he needed to focus on this plane. I hope you had a good time in the states after that.

The passenger next to me called 911 to complain about Air India and its pilots not letting him off the plane and holding him captive on American soil. It got hot inside and the air hostesses were literally fanning the guy! I should have a picture somewhere.
When we landed, someone remarked about it being September 11. Newark had ambulances and fire trucks lined up next to the landing strip! What a day -- and what a miracle to be alive; all thanks to Captain Rustom Palia! Hope to run into him someday and thank him personally.

3 minutes into the video and I’m already shaking my head at the pilot and airline decision making. The APU is absolutely a critical instrument and the plane should have never left without it working. In the event of an engine failure or an engine stall the APU turns on and sends electricity to the cabin allowing the rest of the instruments to keep functioning and gives the pilots the ability to attempt to recover the plane. Deciding to take a plane with nearly 400 souls onboard on a 15 hour flight knowing the APU is not working is absolutely insane.

I've said this before and I'll say it now, Air India has some of the best pilots in the world. There is no doubt that they have to upgrade the aircrafts and amenities, but some of the best take-offs and landings I've had are with Air India. They have amazingly talented pilots, but they should invest in training their flight attendants. I hope Air India comes up (now that it has come home to the Tata Group) and soars even higher. Travelling to and from Japan in the B747 in 1996 and regular trips to and from the UAE from 2011-2017 have made me a lifetime fan of the brand.

Desperate times calls for Desperate measures and that's what the pilots effortlessly did. They synchronized with both the ATCs thus landing safely at Newark Intl. Airport. Hands down to the Pilot and the controller who together saved so many souls.🙏♥️✨️

Great Video! One of the best narration and with detailed visuals. I see the name of the plane written (Nagaland) near the nose (Yes planes were given names of the states when they were commissioned) and it’s tail number on the steering. Didn’t expect this much detail. Appreciate creator’s efforts!

Beautiful Narration of the situation. Never knew about this story before. Amazed to see the calmness on both ends of the engineers trying to figure things out. And one of the busiest airport.

Wow those air India pilots and captain are amazing. They were looking at an utter catastrophe but kept their cool and used every resource and effort to best land the plane. They were very lucky too because if they did not land on their first attempt at the 400 ceiling of Newark, then there would be no second chance. They did really well. I hope the Indian Govt honoured them for that. Those pilots professionalism and calmness and focus saved everyone's life on the plane. The ATCs was very professional and helpful too.
I can't help but compare those skilled air India pilots to the Air France pilots of 2009. The Air France flight was not in any kind of real trouble, but because they did not take corrective actions when the stall warning came on, that is what killed them. They were not on autopilot and had stall warnings for at least four minutes and were at an altitude where they could easily have recovered from. But the black box recorder showed that the pilots ignored the stall warnings and didn't even mention them. The pilots were utterly confused as to why the plane was losing altitude and behaving as it did. It took until seconds before the crash for one of the pilots to work out that the planes nose had been pointing up the whole time.
